This was surprisingly good. The author fully admits that they were inspired by SAO and wrote this because the "trapped in a VRMMO" genre was less popular than once it was, and they lean into their influences in a way that's enjoyable rather than pandering. The dual storylines of the desperate people trying to beat the game and Shuutarou, who lucked into a bunch of super strong NPC allies, work well, and the short story about one of those allies implies that there may be more going on there than we assume. The writing isn't perfect, but on the whole I was pleasantly surprised and am looking forward to the next volume.

I really enjoyed this book, so much so that I have purchased the next four in the series. It is VERY dark, with PvP Bad Guys (dude, SUPER evil, but realistic unfortunately) and monsters that love to eat humans.

I AM curious if it was a translation error or if it was deliberate, but the final part of the Mother AI speaking to everyone, the last part, which was NOT the third thing it told everyone, was "Third Death is Final". No punctuation, and the things listed before it were not listed as First and Second, sooooo I am wondering if those who died come back twice more and if so, how? Undead? NPC? I could be reading too much into it, but it is fun to speculate.

The ending bit where we get Vampy's backstory is incredibly sad, but it's so nice to see how she is growing from the depressed, auto-kill husk that she started out as to how she is growing now. I look forward to reading the other Overlords' backstories in the next volumes!
