Leila Monrose has a life many would envy. In her prestigious career as an injury specialist in Elite English Football, she meets interesting people and travels the world. Beautiful and clever, she has a nice car, a stylish home and has made plenty of friends since she moved up north for her job. Sooner or later, someone will come along to share it all with her.

Could it be the younger footballer Jack Cardal, who Leila helped regain form after a nasty injury? Handsome, rich and confident, Jack always wants what he can’t have. When Leila declines his invitation to dinner, he sees it as a challenge.

Or maybe it will be his older brother, billionaire property and technology tycoon turned football club investor, Nate Cardal, who is a perfect gentleman with a massive skeleton in his closet.

When one brother hurts her, the other helps her seek revenge, but with conditions attached.

In a world of high-stakes contracts, will Leila activate the Substitution Clause?

Substitution Clause by Emma Lee-Johnson is the first book in Emma's Elite English Football series. It is a sweet romance with a fake engagement, spicy scenes, personal growth and real-life issues.

Leila is the lead injury specialist for Redvale City, an Elite English Football Club. She has a passion for helping injured players and treats not only the injury, but the mind and soul too. The reason she chose to become an injury specialist is personal, and the limelight that comes with working for such an elite team has never appealed to her.

Jack Cardal is known to his fans as ‘Jack The Lad’ on account of his blatant womanising and penchant for extracurriculars. He is Redvale's star striker and was last season's superstar signing, but unfortunately, after making his debut, he dislocated his ankle and has been sidelined ever since. He has been working closely with Leila to recover from his injury, and now that it is the start of the new season and he has been cleared to play, he will stop at nothing to make a success of himself.

Nathan Cardal is Jack's older brother. He is a billionaire property and technology tycoon and 40% owner of Redvale City Football Club. He is tired of Jack's attitude and lack of regard for anyone but himself and thinks it's time to finally teach Jack a lesson.

When Jack creates a tabloid's wet dream and what he thinks will get him the date he wants with Leila, Leila is not happy about it--she is fuming about Jack, her job is on the line and the reporters and photographers camped outside her house have caused her to be relocated. Of course, Nathan Cardal has a solution: give the press another story, a better one. “I think we need to make a simple substitution. One brother for another."

In a world of high-stakes contracts, will Leila activate the Substitution Clause?

❤️ the substitution

❤️ the instant connection between Leila and Nate
❤️ the constant question of is this real
❤️ the real-life issues
❤️ found family
❤️ the emotions
❤️ the memorial foundation
❤️ half-time at the Redvale versus Everglade football club match (Ch 23)

Congratulations to Emma on creating this book out of her lack of finding a book based on the sport she loves. It is one of the first of its kind: a sport romance set within the high profile, affluent and prestigious English Football League.

I appreciate the care and dedication Emma put in when writing about the real-life issues in this book. She had me in tears and wanting to know what I could do to help.

Emma did a wonderful job of developing all the characters in this story. I am looking forward to the Christmas novella, Claire's PDF of Lover Types and Season Challenges, Jack's book. I also have my fingers crossed for a Claire and Tyson book.

I was excited to read this book when I saw it released, and I can't wait to dive into it. We begin with Liela, a Professional Sports Physiotherapist for the English football team. She is a successful woman and independent in her career and life. I don't blame her for not wanting to mix pleasure and business.

Jack is a young hotshot with everything: his dream, career, and money to spare. Who wouldn't want this stud? He hasn't heard no in a while and is more determined to date Liela.

Nathan is related to Jack and might be the more level-headed brother. Oh, so Nathan is the one who proposes the substitution. I love how the fake engagement is brought into this story. Oh, I secretly love that this all backfires on Jack. It is just too good of a setup.

Wow, what a whirlwind for Nate and Liela, from newly engaged to traveling billionaire-style to Paris. I can't believe where this story has gone, and I love every minute of the fake romance, but do they remember it isn't real?

Oh, this just got more complicated. I didn't expect that plot twist at all. This book is a whirlwind from start to finish with a dreamy, steamy, and oh-so fantasy-worthy love but, of course, includes real-life issues. Nate and Liela's stories are soo good I got sucked into the story so much I forgot to take notes. There is a prognosis in the book that may be triggering for some.

This was a fantastic read. I loved the sports, the romance, the billionaire lifestyle, and the real-life issues. I was happy, teary-eyed, frustrated, and in awe, along with the main characters. This story would be a fantastic movie, and I love the incorporation of the positive outcomes and dreams coming true. Of course, I'm hoping there is more to come in this series as I would like to read more about Jack and Lucy and, of course, Tyson. This read was inspirational, romantic, swoony, and filled with enough steamy scenes to include a little adventure.

Who will it be? The star football player or his billionaire brother?

I was reading along when it was written and lucky to be an ARC reader.

I really like this story about Leila, Nate and Jack. The ups and downs, the banter, communication and lack of it, and the plot. If you like football (what some may refer to as soccer), romance and great characters, then this one is definitely for you.

Lighthearted but addresses heavy stuff

It's a cute, lighthearted story with spice and sass. It also addresses several very heavy issues. The issues show their evolving relationship.

Predictable and simple. No real spice or character development through the book. Everything feel rushed! Although the story is around sport I wouldn’t classified this story as sport romance.
