The Sandman #49: Brief Lives Part 9

Rate this book
The conclusion to nine-part epic "Brief Lives!" With their quest at an end, Dream, Delirium and the rest of the family go their separate ways. Actions in this issue hold great consequences for the rest of the SANDMAN series and mold the shape of things to come!

"Nine: Farewells-Answered Prayers-The Flowers of Romance-Journey's End-The Gates of Horn-Things Unlooked For-Brief Lives"

Dream pays his debt to the family oracle. He and Delirium converse with Despair, who goes to see Desire. They are scared, but do not specify what of.

Dream returns home and appears to have gotten over his last girlfriend.

An epilogue wraps-up the stories of many characters appearing in the story arc.

O desfecho do arco é bem interessante e comovente. O foda é lembrar de tudo o que já aconteceu e o que pode vir a acontecer. Mas tamo aqui pra isso: pra reler umas 20 vezes.

"When that is done your task will be over; your duties will be at an end. If you wish, you may stay at the temple. Ordo ... do whatever you may wish."

Morpheus goes to pay the price for information, and it is a very, very high price indeed. A price so high that when Dream finished looking at his bowl of red water and sat down on his chair I could feel his emotions in my gut. This whole issue is just sad piece of meat marinating in sad sauce sprinkled with more sad. Damn it, made me cry. Again. Why are you such a good writer? You've wrung every emotion out of this poor reader.

Very happy to come back to the mainstream plots surrounding Dream and his family members. Listened to the audio-experience Audible Act 3 which encompasses Volumes 7-8 (Brief Lives and Worlds' End)[1], the Sandman Special #1, and other short stories from Vertigo: Winter's Edge #1 & #3 and Vertigo Preview #1.

Looking forward to more backstories and "day in the lives" for other family members such as Desire, and Despair as we've seen with Dream and Death.

Is that how's gonna go? Every damn "finale" of this comic arcs are going to destroy me? Every single time? Okay, fine, so be it!

This issue really shows us just how much Morpheus has changed, and explains the complexities of The Endless & what is to come.

A piece of fiction has to be extraordinarily well-executed to put you into deep contemplation. It is about more than entertainment. You enjoy the characters and then you take a step further in your own head and consider their dilemmas in a more objective way.

This thread of Sandman will do just that. Prepare yourself for deep (dark) thoughts. You have been warned. Well played Gaiman, well played.

And thus ends one of the best Sandman arcs ever written. A masterpiece from Neil Gaiman.

It's overwhelmingly desolate, yet intriguing at the same time. Perhaps Gaiman wished to see life from a certain perspective that is older than creations, older than gods.
