I am not a woman.

But I am also not a man.

I won't pretend to be something I’m not, but those around me—both friends and enemies alike—are determined to make me. My village is adamant I marry the pastor's son, dress like a proper lady, and go only by the name given to me at birth. When I refuse, they cast me into The Deadwood: an enchanted forest of vines and brambles crawling with deadly demons and wicked magic.

What I find waiting for me there are no demons like our legends describe, but four cursed warriors from another world, victims of a spell cast by an evil sorceress. It’s said they can be freed from their torment by a human, but not just any human, one that is neither a man nor a woman. We soon discover I’m the key to breaking this spell, but just how I’m supposed to do that remains a mystery. I must get close enough to each of the warriors to somehow lift this curse, or we’ll all be doomed to spend eternity in The Deadwood.

This book will build you up, rip your heart out, and put it back better than it was before, and still leave you wanting more. I really can’t describe how amazing the plot was, and the book overall. I think Drixus and Fenmire are my favorites. But Seeraf may take the top spot if there’s more to learn there.

I was lucky enough to receive this book as an ARC from the Author, I LOVED IT!

I was a bit nervous about how thiccc this book is, but I was hooked only a few chapters in and read it in a few days.

A dark fantasy retelling of Beauty and the Beast meets the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and totally unlike anything I've ever read before. Spice, why choose, diverse, inclusive and beautifully written.

Will definitely be a re read for me! If paranormal romance with a good solid plot is what you like then I'm confident this will be a fav for you.

I was lucky enough to ARC read this book, and this is my honest review.
Before I even started this book, I knew I was going to love it. I was hooked as soon as I read the dedication. It was perfect.
Eve's best friend was immediately supportive of their pronouns and never judged them or talked badly about them. Their father was almost just as supportive, and defended them against their mother, even when the rest of the town was against them and decided to sacrifice them for refusing to live as a woman. Which, in the time period this is based in, is insanely brave and immediately shows what a remarkable person Eve is.
It is honestly so sweet that the Gryxen just take the humans in and let them live in the castle even though they don't have to do that. The irony of the village giving all this food and everything to the demons for sacrifice, for it to all just go back to the humans they sacrifice occasionally is hilarious. I love that the village is unknowingly supplying these humans they hated and sacrificed with food, clothes, and everything they need to survive that the Gryxen can't offer them.
I have two complaints with the entire book, and they are so minor. One, I was really really hoping that Eve would be able to get Caliborne to be able to talk by the end. I think that would have been so incredibly uplifting. I also feel like Drixus' and Eve's whole relationship/mating bond was a little rushed. It just felt like for weeks they were barely talking and then suddenly they were hugging and holding hands and they were like in love with each other. Too much of the relationship happened off-page it felt like. Other than those two minor things, I really fell in love with this book and everything about it.
The storyline/plot was absolutely fantastic. I didn't even feel like I was reading close to 800 pages. I was just so in love with the story I could have read it in a day and a half if I hadn't decided to buddy-read it with a friend of mine who was also ARC-reading it.
When Eve was being told the history of the Gryxen and The Deadwood, I could have read an entire book about that. It was so interesting to me. The history between them and Reilanna and their time in The Deadwood could easily be made into a novella or even a book on its own.
I'm so happy that everyone got to live and get their happily ever after. I was absolutely sobbing at the end of the book when Eve had to sacrifice themselves and go through the gate and die to officially break the curse on The Deadwood. Finding out that every single acolyte that Fenmire had told Eve about were all them in their past lives absolutely broke me. Eve has always been an amazing person, no matter who she was, her soul has always been selfless and full of love for other people, always willing to sacrifice themselves for the greater good, and always non-binary. This is absolutely a five-star read. And the spice level in the book is perfect. There was most definitely still a wonderful plot, but the spicy scenes were all top-tier.
Read this book. You'll fall in love with the characters and you'll cry and rejoice right along with them. This is an absolutely amazing book.

This was so good! I received an ARC of this book and it pulled me in entirely! Inclusive and expansive, the author creates a lush world that pops off the page, and characters so lovingly crafted, they feel real. It’s a beast of a book packed with action, romance, spice and representation, and is definitely worth the read. I enjoyed it as a stand-alone title and hope to read more from this author!

Well this was a journey.

The mc was non-binary and genderfluid, this is the main subject of the book and you get reminded of it alot. I learned from the book what it actually means, even if its not intented that way, i dont know. It showed the struggles of the mc dealing with everything and not beeing accepted in the community. The supportive father was so nice to read.

The storyline was amazing, and even with the 782 pages i wasnt bored at all. I do think that maybe the mc was very fast with getting comfy with the gryxen. The book does touch alot of sensitive topics but not in a bad way, more in a way to make you think.
There were alot of twists happening, action and very spicy scenes 🤭

This book was not what i expected it to be, and i really enjoyed it alot. It does have some triggers for people and this is mentioned in the authors note, it might have been better to have a page with trigger warnings, i dont read author note’s but i do read trigger warnings. I also coudnt find any trigger warnings somewhere else, so i think for the author it might be a good idea to have the trigger warnings listed somewhere.

I received a digital ARC of this book for my honest opinion.

When I first heard about this book I knew I wanted to sign up for a chance to get an advanced copy and I was so excited when I received it. Beauty's Beasts was definitely a solid 4/5 star read for me and there are so many reasons why. This story follows the gender-fluid character Evangeline/Evan/Eve and is set in a fantasy world that reminded me of turn-of-the-century America a la Little House on the Prairie. Our main character grew up in a world that did not accept them and were about to be forced into an unhappy, and most likely abusive, marriage when they are sacrificed to the demons of the Deepwoods after turning down their suitor. A whole new life opens up after their life is saved by the demons they were always warned about.

The tropes of interest in this story include monster romance, reverse harem, grumpyxsunshine, and found family. I had a great time reading this story and while there were parts I did see coming I enjoyed how many twists caught me off guard. I really enjoyed how developed all of the characters were, no one that was interacted with felt very static. While I wouldn't call it an issue, my biggest criticism of the book would be the length/pacing. I feel like it could have been split up into multiple stories or shaved down a little. That being said, I do not wish any part of the story was not there, so I don't know what I would have taken out. I enjoyed how all of the different relationships were developed and how it didn't feel overly instalove like it often can in stories similar to this. Even with characters that connected faster than others, I could see the relationship build.

This being a book with nonbinary representation I am going to want to talk about it. While I am not genderfluid I am nonbinary and I really enjoyed how this was used. While there are times when having someone's status as not cis/straight feels weird as a plot point how this was done felt good to read. It wasn't over shoehorned in and felt very natural. Along with this, how those who did not respect the main character's identity were dealt with in a pretty great way. I do warn those who may be upset by this kind of content that it can be stressful to read.

To make my long story short, I loved the romance, I loved the friendship, I loved the adventure, and I really loved the spice. I would recommend it to my friends who also enjoy a good monster romance and reverse harem. I am excited to see if there will be another story in this world.

I received this as an ARC directly from the author, and I am giving this honest review of my own free will.

I love fairy tale retellings/reimaginings, but I am a sucker for a Beauty and the Beast retelling/reimaginings specifically. When I stumbled on A tiktok, bringing up the specific beef I have with the fairy tale, I found myself instantly hooked. The beast doesn't transform back into a prince, and Beauty gets 4 of them? Yes, please. The sign up sheet included a VERY detailed list of trigger and content warnings, but I see book red flags, and I'm ready to join the circus.

After a 2+ month wait, this lengthy piece arrived in my inbox with a final digital page count. I am no stranger to lengthy tomes, but 902 pages definitely seemed daunting. Subtracting title, copyright, table of contents tw/cw authors note, and song list leaves me with 886 pages... much more manageable.

Unfortunately, while I was exceptionally excited about this ARC's arrival, it caught me in a state of reading paralysis. If I were reading something from KU, I would simply just have ALEXA read the text to me, but coming from BookFunnel, that was not an option. Thankfully, I was able to save this as a PDF to use within a program called Natural-Reader to read to me. My kindle was kept near if there were anything I wanted to highlight and make notes on. I do hope that perhaps one day Alex Hanson is able to bring this beautiful piece to life in audiobook format.

One of my biggest complaints about the why choose genre as a whole is that the relationships with someone in the group gets neglected. There have been a few titles where a character in the group pops up that I had forgot they existed, but they're there and very involved in a spicy scene. Mx. Hanson does not skimp on character or relationship development. Each relationship has its own natural progression with two developing fairly easily, one with additional difficulty, and one that grew through a door.

Our NBMC, Evan/Evangeline/Eve, has such a big heart and I love their journey, but my biggest annoyance was when they would refer to any of the Gryxen as a demon. There is a whole explanation on the race of these protectors and how the humans in the village warped their existence. Calling them demons really rubbed me the wrong way.

4.75 ⭐️ (rounded up) the demon thing after the education really bugged me

4.5 🌶 The spice to plot is very well balanced. The spicy scenes were very enjoyable and each love interest brings their own special delight to the bed. The telepathic dirty talk was one of my favorite details.

This is a book I would definitely re-read. Despite the book’s length, it took less than a day and a half for me to complete. I was excited when presented with this ARC.

The world building is quite lovely. You get a feeling of everyone simply surviving day by day as best they know how with an underlying hope that change and better things are possible. The protagonist comes from a place of certain conditions and expectations and is suddenly thrown into a world where they are accepted unconditionally. The author portrays this feeling of acceptance in a way that feels harmonious and magical.

One of the more interesting concepts in this book that was touched upon for me was religion. This wasn’t a Christian, atheist, or Satanist book. However, the characters’ choices and opinions based on their perceived religious beliefs were different among each of the characters. While I wouldn’t consider it a major part of the book, it provided some intriguing stories within the story.

This read exactly like a modern fantasy novel. The protagonist is not a damsel in distress or a knight in shining armor, yet they go on a mission to better themselves and others along the way. Some of the main characters have a past they’d do anything to run away from and somewhere between the lines find comfort, love, and compassion again.

There’s also some spice 🌶️, which I thought was just the right amount in the book. Gryxens *might* have different anatomies than humans 🤷‍♀️. The “we don’t mind sharing” part was iconic; I definitely recommended reading this one. It was a mix of everything and left me invested in the characters and the world building, even after I’d finished the book.

*Received an ARC copy. This is my honest opinion, freely given* (side note I'm not the best at writing reviews)

I will admit that I signed up to read this ARC last minute. Not because I wasn't interested, but because I was absolutely ecstatic to read it but have never ARC read anything, and I was nervous. When I say I am 100% thrilled that I read this book, I truly mean it. This book was everything I didn't even know I wanted and has quickly shot up the list to one of my favorites, period.

Starting off, I am a complete sucker for a Beauty and the Beast retelling/reimagining, and when I saw the author posting videos of this concept featuring a non-binary MC, I was immediately intrigued and excited.

Evangeline/Eve/Evan, having been exiled to The Deadwood, finds themselves immersed into a curse no one knew about. Learning they are the key to breaking the curse sets along to help the demons who quickly accepted them as they are without hesitation. While along the way, falling in love with them each individually.

The MC is precisely the kind of hero you want to see while being beyond relatable at every turn. The gargoyles, I can't say enough about them. They are funny, sweet, loving, devoted, protective, and obviously sinfully delicious! (And no, I can't pick a favorite, lol)

All in all, this book is 5 stars for me! Everything from the world building, the story, the characters, and their development is some of the best I've read in a while.

🌶️ 🏰 🦇 🖤 ‼️

“It takes more than some fangs and a foul temper to make a monster.”

✨I was given an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review on my social media platforms.✨

I LOVED this book. I loved the characters, the plot, the writing style, the SPICE! 🌶️🌶️

This book is thicccc but it needed to be with the amount of detail it had! I enjoyed the world building as much as the main plot, which I found to be fantastic. From the very first page I was gripped by Evangeline’s story & found myself smiling, swooning & crying as their story progressed.
Also, I must say, The LGBTQIA inclusion in this book was *chef’s kiss*.
If you’re into monster romance, fantasy & re-tellings, I highly recommend. This is a book that I see myself re-reading in the future due partially to the fact that it’s so enjoyable & partially due to the fact that I may or may not have fallen in love with a fictional character by the name of Caliborne. 😄

So thankful to the Author to have send me an ARC, I was beyond stoked to read it. And while it was a thick book, I didn’t think it was dragged on. It took a while to read as I was buddy reading it with a friend

This book was a rollercoaster of emotions, I really have never read anything like this before, and I say that in a good way!

The beginning of the book was a bit hard to get into only because I immediately disliked a lot of the towns people for how prejudice they were, but I did come to understand, that was just part of the plot.

I was so happy to see the MC take a stand and, not marry that asshole Elias. I was also super disappointed that the MC’s mom was so unaccepting. But loved the father!

Was pleasantly surprised that the Beasts of the Deadwood were so accepting, its one of my favorite things. Now lets talk about the main plot, the mating bonds and the curse.

For a while there i thought the curse would never be broken. I kept thinking one of the beasts that came through the gate were going to either kill the main characters or one of the Gryxen. Glad that wasnt the case!

I loved how each of the Gryxen gave the MC a mating gift that was so personal and special, my favorite were the bracelets Caliborne made, just bescause it was such a perfect present for the MC that way everyone would respect their Identity on any given day!

While i loved each Gryxen and how they treated the MC, i feel like with each Gryxen we got to experience so much of how their love formed, and then with Drixus everything felt so rushed. As it happened closer to the end of the book i just wish we would have been able to get more chapters with them together.

I predicted that the MC’s father would die. What i did not predict was so many other things that i was pleasantly surprised. While i understand that the MC was put back in the Village for a time, to see how their life would differ from people accepting them vs people not accepting them, I wish instead of those chapters back in the village, we could have seen more of the MC as a Gryxen, see more of their life in Machistaforo.

When Seeraff told the MC that there was a 5th mating bond, I automatically knew it was with him.

I was glad to see Will get his happy Ending with Jacob and that the MC’s father ended up being alive at the end.

All in all, I was extremely happy with the ending and i would recommend this book 100 times over!

When I saw that Alex was releasing a beauty & the Beast /the four horsemen inspired monster romance RH (reverse harem) I could not hold my excitement. I've been litterally counting down the days to read this and I was not disappointed.

Beautys beasts is a beautifully written story that follows non-binary gender fluid Evangaline/ Eve/ Evan, whom is honestly to good for the world they are born into.

The book is thicc and will take you on an great adventure filled with love, hate, friendship, trauma, heartache, acceptance, and healing. ( and spice)
With a book this big you get a little bit of everything and it's just so *chefs kiss* The world building is fantastic and so detailed you can picture everything so vividly. The love interests are all so unique and wonderfully written filled with their own quirks and flaws you can't help but also fall in love with all of them.

I laughed, I blushed and when I tell you a bawled my eyes out multiple times. *shouts to the heavens* This book is so good.

Right off the bat for me this book was a solid ⭐️4 from the beginning UNTIL I GOT TO CHAPTER 77. If I could give more than 5 stars I would.

🖤⭐️5 ( if I could honestly give more I would)
🖤 4🌶
🖤The +2LGBTQA and disability representation inclusivity of this book is one of the best I have seen. Hands down.

I received this as an ARC for an honest review

I loved these characters so much. The nonbinary/lgbtq+ rep is amazing.

The author has such a unique world design and I was super intrigued from the beginning! The relationships with each of the Gryxen were great. Every Gryxen was super unique and I loved watching their relationship with Eve/Evangaline/Evan grow.

The only part that bugged me was there was a ton of exposition and info dumping. There were parts that I skipped over because it just felt bogged down, but the character’s relationships kept me going.

I do kind of wish there was more lead up to the end where they find out they are also mated to the god, it felt a little out of left field for me.

This book is a CHONKER but it was fun and endearing 🧡

This is a huge book with a lot going on in it. I recommend checking out the trigger warning before reading it. This author has created a unique world with interesting characters that are diverse and inclusive. The plot is well thought out. This book is simply amazing. I have tried to write this review a few times, and the words just do not do it justice. Alex Hanson has created something beautiful, and I am so honored to have been an ARC reader for this book. This book was really well written and the author does an incredible job at writing and creating a fantasy world that immerses the reader in the setting, plot, and characters. In that regard I really enjoyed the book for those aspects. Alex does a fantastic job in creating such an incredible world and cast of characters.

This book just wasn't really my cup of tea unfortunately. But I will be cheering on Alex and this book because this retelling is an amazing concept!

This book was FANTASTIC!!!

The world building was beautiful. I wanted to explore the Deadwood and Michastiforo.

The relationships between Evan/Eve/Evangeline and each one of Gryxen felt realistic and special in their own ways.

I loved Alex's writing style and this book just flew by. I didn't want it to end!!

Thank you, Mx. Hanson. Hopefully you will write more!!!

*I received an eARC of this book*

I absolutely LOVED this book!!! This was a long one, no doubt, and it did take me a while to get through as a slower reader but it was so worth it! Hanson really gives you the time to get to know and fall in love with each of the characters while also telling a really compelling story plot-wise.

Caliborne, Wexton, Fenmire, and Drixus are the four Gryxen guardians of the Gate between Earth and their world. They were trapped on Earth by an evil witch thousands of years ago and cursed to live in a permanently frozen forest. Our hero Evangeline/Eve/Evan is thrown into the forest, called the Deadwood, by angry townspeople who hated them for being genderqueer, and is found by Caliborne who takes them in and nurses them back to health. They fall in love with Caliborne and find out that there is a prophecy/curse that they could break by mating with all 4 of the Gryxens. They embark on the journey of getting to know the gryxen and learning about their world and Seeraf, their god.

Coming from a background with religious trauma, Seeraf and the Five’s stories and teachings were so refreshing and honestly healed a part of me.

All in all, I would highly recommend this book!!!!

Loved the story and the characters not the ending felt rushed. (Disclaimer, I received an arc copy.)

I won't spoil anything but I ended up having a bunch of questions regarding the post-climax ending that weren't really answered which was frustrating because all the details on the rest of the book were so well thought out and intricate. Even when something was intentionally withheld from the reader I was really clear on what was going on and when it was finally revealed it was thoroughly explained and made perfect sense. I just felt a little disappointed in the way the ending wasn't described in the same way.

Now for the good. I loved that there was a lot of queer and disability representation but that it wasn't used as a crutch to further the story. Each character had some kind of hardship in their life but it was portrayed as just a part of who they are, not as something that defines them.

The spice was spicy. I'm usually indifferent about monster romance because I feel like a lot of books lean into the monster anatomy too much and not enough into developing the monster character. Also it's just not my "thing". I loved these monsters though. They were each so different from each other and we got to learn about their personalities and backgrounds which was a lot of fun. Plus monster anatomy and sexy times were frequent but not too much to overwhelm the story.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I received this book as an ARC and I loved this book! It was romance, action, why choose, fantasy, LGBTQIA+, and more. This story starts off with a gender fluid person who goes by three different names (Evan, Evangeline, and Eve) they go through the trials of being unaccepted in their religious community. As a way to retaliate against “their rebellious way” the church tried to have them married off to the pastors son, when they refused they sent them as a offering to what they believed to be demons. These “demons” end of taking them in and caring for them. Evangeline and the beasts fight monsters together, unconditionally love one another, and heal each other. This book has everything you hope for and more. Tons of spice, acceptance, and intense action. I honestly hope this will be a series!!

"I would burn my world to the ground, and maybe yours as well, for allowing such a tragedy."

I came into Beauty's Beasts expecting a why choose fantasy running along the same lines as the old fairy tale of love, acceptance, and orgasms. Where I found myself instead was a fully developed and well planned universe of beasts, gods, witches, complicated humans, and hot double-d lovin'. ...and radical love, acceptance, and spicy fun x 4. I'm already looking forward to a reread.

Fans of spicy romance in all genres will find a home here.

*I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest review*

Wow, I think this is honestly one of my favorite books I’ve read this year. The lore and world building in this story is outstanding! The pacing was also very well executed. I enjoyed how the book was split up into miniature arcs, allowing optimal space for story telling while preventing the plot from stagnating, a major accomplishment for such a long book. This layout also allows for individual relationships to naturally develop without feeling rushed.

This book features a range of gender and sexual identities. I really enjoyed seeing these different identities highlighted and celebrated, especially in a book where characters are so introspective and open about their lived experience and the way they view themselves.

My one minor critique of this story is that some people may not enjoy the almost-too-perfect vibes of the main character. There are points where they make mistakes, but the mistakes often felt fleeting and forgettable, easily resolved by the character’s immense emotional maturity and self awareness. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but in some instances it did feel like complex problems were a little too easily resolved. However, it in no way detracted from the overall story line and did align with the established characterization of the protagonist.

Although this is a very long book, it was definitely worth the time it took to finish. I laughed. I cried. I constantly gasped in surprise. It was heartwarming and gut wrenching, and sometimes both at the same time. In the end, it was honestly one of the most satisfying books I have read in a while and I cannot recommend it enough. If you’re on the fence about giving this book a try, go for it. You’ll definitely thank yourself later.

Note: I was provided an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I'll start by saying that I absolutely loved most of this book, but not all of it. Also I will mention some things I disliked in my review, so please don't read if you don't want to engage in criticism!

Beauty's Beasts tells the story of sometimes-Evangeline, sometimes-Evan, sometimes-Eve. They are a gender non-conforming person, living in a century that wasn't too kind to people who stepped outside of the norm, and every day they are forced to face the hostility of the village, of the church, of everyone that doesn't want to understand.

Although they do their best to stand strong against all the hatred, everything takes a turn for the worse when they refuse to marry Elias, the son's pastor. He's mean, only wants to marry them as a show of holiness, to prove he is the one that can "tame" the walking-sin that Evangeline/Evan/Eve has become.

Unwilling to face the hatred and the abuse coming from a man that wishes to be their husband (forcefully), they end up being thrown into the Deadwood, a mysterious, creepy forest that is only accessible on the full-moon, where beasts are known to roam, and where sinners are sent to die.

Except they don't! I'll stop here to avoid any spoilers, but let me tell you that if you reach this point you will read until the end. This is a promise.

There were so many things I loved about this book, I don't even know how to start.

1. The handling of gender fluidity is extraordinary. This might be a bit biased, but I felt so seen, it was so, so relatable to me. As a non-binary transmasc person, I first came out (many years ago) using the label "gender fluid". To make my life easier - and lessen my dysphoria - I'd wear different colored wristbands depending on how I felt, and only my friends knew to change the pronouns they used accordingly. The similarity of this experience made me smile every time it was mentioned.

2. The relationships are healthy, all-consuming, and extremely well build. All four love interests are distinct from one another, even after going through the same exact events. Every main character is fleshed out, flawed and lovable in their own way. Although it heavily relies on stereotypes at times - the "gentle but caring" one, the "absolute heathen" one, the "broody, intelligent" one, and the "monster with a gentle heart" one - it never let them become unidimensional. All of them struggle and love and fear. All of them have their quirks and annoying traits and I would also fall in love with every single one of them.

3. It's just the right amount of spicy. Which, in a book of this size, means there's lots of sex. And there's something for everyone! Soft, vanilla sex? Check. Unhinged and passionate love-making? Check. Rough, kinky, extremely hot sex? Check. There's even a character that is not interested in sex, and is happy to watch his partner writhe in pleasure. 10/10, the sex scenes are so well written.

4. The world building is actually amazing. Even though I am of the opinion that this book could be much, much shorter without losing quality (it has a lot of domestic fluff that I, personally, could have done without), the history of the world, the lore, the fantasy of it all is excellent. The descriptions were so detailed, so vivid, that I could see myself in every single space. I have such a detailed image of the entry-way to the Deadwood, it's actually scary.

5. The exploration of religion is impeccable. There's a deep-dive to the horrors of christianity and what it has done to many people who were deemed "different", and an actual built-from-the-ground religion of these other people - Gryxen - who is so amazingly complete. Plus, the parallels and connections between the two are chef's kiss, so good, made me laugh.

I honestly loved most of this book, it was perfect (albeit a little too long) until around 80%. I loved the characters, their relationships, the atmosphere, the world-building, the plot, the twists, everything.

The only thing I really disliked was the ending. It wrapped around too fast at first, and then it dragged on and it made no sense to me. I'm very interested about the last revelation, and I hope it's explored in the next book, but I honestly couldn't stand that whole part.

All in all, a really solid book: lush, deep, queer, sexy, and all around a great read. It read like (good) fanfiction, in the best way possible. Even though there were parts that I didn't like I just needed. to. get. to the end.

I’m gonna get this out of the way for the tl;dr folx: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ - Get yourself the book. It’s THICC, spicy, glorious, incredibly well written with a profound message, and by far one of the best books I have read in the last few years. Moving along…

Alex, you have raised the bar for authors who attempt Monster fudger and retelling stories of any kind going forward, forevermore. I’m not even exaggerating. Please note I’m not writing this because I received an ARC, it’s because this book moved my damn soul with the words on the pages. Between the disability, gender nonconformity/non-binary, and Queer LGBTQ representation being such a main focal point I couldn’t help but feel like so many of us who fit into those categories were actually SEEN. Then adding enduring hostile religious environments and overcoming religious trauma, it just brought this story to a whole other level that I know a lot of people, myself included, resonate with on a personal front.

The journey this tale takes us on is beyond what I could have imagined when I first received my ARC. We begin in a ‘provincial town’ full of judge mental villagers who were deeply indoctrinated into the, “for the lord sayeth so” mindset. Our MC who is an exceptionally wonderful and bad a$$ human is holding their own regardless of all the stares and village gossip about their person and how “different” they are. There’s even a Gaston-like creep (Elias - 🤮) who uses the church, Bible, and religious fear instilled from an early age in all those living there to get away with heinous behavior towards our MC and the village as a whole with time. Will is our ride or die Bestie that stands up against the meat head Elias for Evangeline (MC) even if it is detrimental to him, but he doesn’t care. Their Papa is also an ally. Now, the village is not magical but there is a section adjacent to it that has a portal and it connects to another realm. Simply stated, the curse of the witch is rooted there. The zealots do untold things to those they deem not “holy enough” and toss them through it during the full moons to meet their doomed fate. This is how we meet our amazing Demons/Monsters (Gryxen). Caliborne, Wexton, Fenmire, and Drixus. They’re kind, attentive, strong, brilliant, protective, fierce, SEXY, become devoted to the well-being of Evangeline, AND completely accepting of them being a non-binary individual. Evangeline sometimes feels more masculine, other times more feminine, and some days it’s a balance. They have a few names that apply which are perfect for them.

Listen, I can go on and on about the specifics of the story but I rather not spoil anything. Know that you’re in for a bumpy ride which will include tears (thanks for that Alex - sarcasm lol)… true joy, the peace found family brings, belly laughs, heartache, angst, rage, marvel, and a desire to find a way to bring these Gryxen to life in our world. Yes, they’re THAT wonderful. OH and the spice!! Again, the spice is 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️. I was heavy breathing a few times. Demon Daddy Fenmire is NOT to be trifled with. 🥵 Wexton has a wicked, wicked tongue. 😈

Chapters 76-78 though had me shook, in the best and worst of ways. I was shouting, pacing, putting down my kindle and taking deep breaths then diving back in. It’s a beautiful HEA but the struggle is real to get there. Once you get to those final chapters and Epilogue you will tear up and maybe hug your kindle and book a little bit. (I can neither confirm nor deny this happened to me)

I hands down wish I could read this again for the first time ever. If I could give this 5 million stars I swear to Seeraf I would! Just… get yourself this book and read it. You won’t regret it. (Be mindful of TW’s)

Thank you Alex, for creating something so painstakingly beautiful and sharing it with the world. 🖤🌈

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is a dark, fantasy retelling of Beauty and Beast/Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, Why Choose Edition. The main character is nonbinary. Some days are Evan days, where they feel masculine; some days are Eve days, where they feel feminine; and some days are neither and they go by their name given at birth, Evangeline, in which these days are just meh days. The townspeople are not receptive to their trying to live their life as a man some days, and they have difficulty just getting through the days. Eventually, they get offered up in the monthly Offering given to The Deadwood to be eaten by the demons in the forest. These demons, as you may guess, are the "Four Horsemen" in this story.

I was immediately sucked into this book. It is very well written. It is so many things all in one: it includes monsters, magic/paranormal aspects, action, loose fairytale retelling of Beauty and the Beast, reverse harem/why choose, MM action between side characters (but spicy scenes are only of the main character and their harem) and more. One thing I always complain about is how some books are split into multi book series, when one or two books would suffice. Well, Beauty's Beasts is all one book, so no cliffhangers. It is a happily ever after, but doesn't mean I didn't sob through the last couple chapters because I FORGOT it was HEA.

I like how inclusive the story is. I have never read a book that the main character is nonbinary/gender fluid, but it was easy to follow along mostly. There were times where I was confused because "Evangeline" was used a lot and only a few times after the bracelets were given to them did they actually correct anyone. So I felt like they had a lot of days that were Evangeline days.

I like that the story had a steady flow. The MC built a relationship with each of the "demons" (Gryxen, not sure if I spelled that right). Each mating happened before the next pairing really started. Each Gryxen had their own personalities and abilities. They were pretty well thought out characters. The reader easily falls in love with each one of them. I do feel the last mating, with Drixus, could have used a little more. I was starting to stress out around 77% into the book when it hadn't happened yet. The main fight scene happened very quickly. Finally, I liked Will's perspective for the Epilogue, but really would have liked one from the main character as well. I liked Will's character, and I liked they were best friend's with the main character, but I feel like him and Jacob were not as present or had a significant role other than being Evan/Eve/Evangeline's best friend. Once Will and Jacob were in The Deadwood, you see them some, but its mostly focused on Evan/Eve/Evangline's relationships and matings with the Gryxen.

This book is indicated as not being a part of a series, but I really hope there is more following these characters. I could not get enough. There is a good amount of spice as well. Much like each Gryxen has a unique character sketch, their spice follows along with that. I was extremely happy for the primal play, and am always very excited when I see it in there.

Before reading the book, make sure you check the trigger warnings!
