Happily Ever Haunted

Rate this book
I fell in love with a ghost. Yes, from my past, and I just can’t seem to forget about him.

They say it’s bad luck for a black cat to cross your path—one has been tailing me for days—but it didn’t start there. Years ago, I was trapped in a railcar for twenty-four hours. Also, I accidentally shattered two mirrors and got struck by lightning once.

But I’ve finally caught a break (not of the mirror variety). I’m traveling to Concordia to get the big scoop on supposed paranormal activity out there—think bigfoot, werewolves, and their very own version of Nessie.
I’m skeptical, but the only thing that could derail this trip is if I get stuck on a train again. Looking back, it wasn’t all bad. I met the most handsome and charming guy that day. We talked for hours and I fell in love. For real.

Then he ghosted.

I’ve been chugging through life ever since. Not to sound dramatic, but I can’t shake the feeling that Burton was the one.
In a fit of courage (or stupidity), I emailed him about my upcoming trip. The reply was dry. Seems he’s become quite the grump. But that’s nothing my sunny personality can’t fix—I’m convinced the lightning blast boosted its wattage.

There’s just one problem.

It turns out Burton actually is a ghost—a prince cursed to haunt the train until he finds his first true sweetheart. They say lightning can’t strike twice but can love? If so, I wouldn’t say no to a hauntedly ever after.

Flirty and funny paranormal romantic comedy that blurs the lines between reality and fantasy. This is a standalone clean romance that gets silly and provides a bridge between Ellie Hall’s contemporary and romantic comedy novels and her pen name, E. Hall’s three paranormal romantasy series.

This book moved slowly and a little all over the place for the first 100 pages, the couple doesn’t even meet until page 90 something. And then it takes off into some crazy gibberish that is too much too fast. Maybe as a series this would have worked, but it was so slow and then so much crammed in. I got to 64% and just found myself rolling my eyes too much. And Sunny was a bit over the top. She needed to calm down.

Scarlet and Burton’s story is a fun, swoony, silly kind of paranormal that is perfect for those who don’t want real spooks during spooky season.

Things I Liked:
- “A ghost has to do what a ghost has to do.”
-“This gives new meaning to the term of endearment Boo.”
-Boofriend
-Strudel vs Chocolate Cake
-Po
-Mr & Mrs Swizzle
-Pine
-“You once told me that our meeting was not possible. We learned that nothing is impossible. At least not when it comes to you and me.”

This story reminded me of the old school Disney channel original Halloween movies. I think it is so fun that there are some Easter eggs to the Clean Paranormal Romance series that are under the pen name E. Hall included as well.

Reader’s Notes:

– this is told from Scarlet & Burton’s points of view

– Burton’s parents died in an accident

– Burton is cursed to be a ghost

Review:

This was the perfect book to read in between everything else I’ve been reading recently! It was a beautifully whimsical and light read with a quick happily ever after to satisfy me. I enjoyed that Scarlet didn’t believe that Burton was a ghost and thought he was just messing with her. I liked reading Burton’s secrets posts, giving us a look into who he was and his thoughts toward having met Scarlet. I also really enjoyed the black cat showing up at the most opportune & inopportune times throughout the story!

Summary:

Scarlet is an author who’s hit a rut in her writing. With it being her only income at the moment, she wants to get a temporary job to supplement this break until she’s able to move on. Just when she’s about to get down on her luck about no one wanting to hire her, the perfect job offer comes in to go to Concordia to investigate and report on the possible paranormal activity. The location makes Scarlet think about Burton, the guy she met by chance on the train the last time she took a trip there. The guy who also ghosted her every day since. But that doesn’t stop sunny Scarlet from taking the chance that maybe he’ll want to meet up while she’s in the area…

Burton knows with his current ghostly condition that he’s in no shape to give the happy life that Scarlet deserves. So though he wants to keep up the one thing that has given him life since his unfortunate change, Burton tries his best to let go of her. With each day, he loses a little bit of himself and preserves his memories on a secret message board. Until he sees Scarlet again, and she can still see him. Life as a ghost has been fairly dull, but Scarlet brings the sunshine and hope that Burton’s so badly needed. But will he ever be able to be the man Scarlet should have in her life?

Oh I loved this one! It’s the sweetest, most swoony, spooky love story. Scarlet met the love of her life on a train, not realizing the reason he then ghosted her was because Burton was a ghost 👻 when she comes back to Concordia, they fall in love all over again🩶 I loved her determination to free him!

What a fun paranormal/rom com! This was a quick story and perfect to get me out of a slump. A great romance read for spooky season.

This was unique and not something I’ve read before, had fairytale vibes! My only critique would be that the ending felt rushed.

What a fun book and slightly different with a paranormal twist to this Romcom. I loved that parts of the story takes place in Concordia. This story is a stand alone book even though it is about Concordia where The Love List Series takes place.

Scarlet Swizzle who is an author that writes a detective series and she is in a writing funk. When she needs a quick job because she is broke, she is suddenly offered to write a story about paranormal things in Concordia. As she prepares to travel there, she remembers the last time she was in that area about ten years ago when she met Burton. They got stranded on a train for 24 hours and shared a special kiss. Then he ghosted her and she has no idea that he literally ghosted her because he is a ghost.

It was fun learning Burton's past through his memories that he posted on Keep a Secret. He had no idea that this was a site made by Scarlet to share some of her own secrets. Burton is a prince who has a twin brother that was the heir to the throne. When they had a special birthday celebration- someone offered his brother a love potion as a gift but Burton believed it was something that would hurt his brother and he drank it instead. As a result he became a ghost who no one remembers and he cannot get off of the train he was riding the day of his birthday. When Burton received an email from Scarlet that she was coming back to Concordia and would love to meet him, his only reply was that is not possible. She had no idea he was a ghost and slowly losing more and more of himself.

When Scarlet unexpectedly sees Burton on the train she is surprised. Scarlet may be the answer to Burton's dilemma as she is the only one who can see him and when he is around her, he feels more and more like his old self. As they work together will they be able to break the curse on his life? Will Scarlet and Burton get a second chance together?

I received a copy of this book from the author and this is my honest unbiased review.

This is a sweet and cute paranormal romance. A perfect Halloween read for readers who don’t want the scary, just the fun. I’m not much for paranormal stories myself, but framed in a rom-com/sweet romance box, b6 an author I enjoy, I can definitely get behind it. I knew I was in the right place with the opening line: “Sometimes I want to knit myself into a cozy blanket and just read for the rest of my life.” Totally. Mystery writer Scarlet has pined for years for the guy that got away…a man she met on a stuck train on the way to Concordia. When she has the opportunity to travel back, she discovers that Burton didn’t just ghost her all those years ago. He is a ghost. Literally. Trapped on the train and slowly fading away. As they try to find a way to save him, can love conquer all? “There were times when she held my hand and could’ve let go. When she could’ve given up on me. But she didn’t.” I enjoyed this sweet story. There is fun banter and lots of cute moments. The paranormal elements are kept surface-level, so it’s still pretty accessible for non-supernatural readers. Some readers might want a deeper dive of explanations, but this was perfect for me. I’m here for the romance, after all. “Love is literally the greatest, strongest, and most powerful thing in this world. It’ll outclass and outlast monsters, even the ones we create ourselves.” This story is a standalone, but regular readers of this author may recognize some small nods to other books she has written in both the romance and fantasy realms. This book is sweet and clean with no harsh language.

This was a quick little paranormal romance that takes us back to the fictional European country of Concordia, featured in Ellie's Love List series. Scarlett "Sunny" Swizzle is a cozy mystery writer who also runs a secret confessions website living in Seattle, who never got over the man she met on a train while backpacking through Europe, Burton. With promises to keep in touch, he ghosted her instead, and Scarlett measured every man she dated afterwards against him. When an article writing opportunity comes up that will bring her back to Concordia, Scarlett decides to reach out to Burton again to see if he remembers her and wants to meet up, but he tells her in no uncertain terms would it be possible. Upset, she still goes to Concordia, and he appears on the train just as he did in the past, though in his faded, ghostly form. Scarlett discovers the true reason for his ghosting was that he was, in fact, a ghost! Caught in the "in between" as a result of drinking a love potion intended for his twin brother, the heir to the Concordian throne, Prince Burton, as he is truly known, is not dead, but also not living. With Scarlett's help, he slowly regains his physical form. I enjoyed visiting the world of Concordia again, with a paranormal spin on it. This was a perfect read if you're looking for something with spooky and sweet elements and it's quick pace won't leave you lagging.

🛑Read on with caution; review may contain spoilers🛑

Happily Ever Haunted started out as confusing for me up until about 15% of the book when I got a clearer context of what was happening. It starts with Scarlett, who’s a mystery writer and runs a secrets confessions website, She has writer’s block and needs to pay her bills. She receives an offer for a job to write about the paranormal happenings in Concordia, to which she went many years ago and met Burton. She met him on a train and they got to know each other quite well, but he afterward ghosted her. Coming back to Concordia, she meets him again and discovers that he is actually a ghost, fading and with Scarlett’s help is able to physically form.

This book I really found fun and peculiar. I enjoyed the main characters, especially Scarlett. Her chemistry with Burton seemed meh to me at first, but I eventually enjoyed their funny banter. A perfect book if you want a light, paranormal read!

I liked the first half of the book better than the second half, which is usually the other way around. Everyone loves endings where the questions to the answers are all laid out and we get the happily ever afters.

I think the paranormal rom-com and romantsy theme/vibe is fun. I do read other books similar and enjoy some good magic and mystery. There was a good pacing to this story, getting to know our characters and building up the mystery- and then about half way through, it felt like things changed. Answers just kept coming up with not much work in the form of random character pop ups and tell all explanations. It honestly felt the end was rushed and just tried to wrap it up quickly. The ending was tied up neatly in the form of a cute epilogue, but even there had answers to questions that leave you wondering- what?! So.. that happened with no explanation whatsoever? There are still things and characters that leave you wondering and hanging with no clear follow up. Without spoilers, one of the biggest problems was solved without much fanfare or even a follow up explanation- like ok that happened, let’s move on. I also don’t love the miscommunication/leaving trope as a way to cause undue drama. I would say that it wasn’t really heavy on the romance very much. So- it was cute and a fun story, just left me wanting a little bit in the end.

Scarlet is finally taking the trip to Concordia she has been planning for years. Last time she attempted to go she missed her train only to meet the man of her dreams. In spite of her instant connection with Burton, he ghosts her. On this return trip she reaches out to see if he remembers her and runs into a whole other kind of “ghosting”.

Happily Ever Haunted is a stand-alone paranormal romance. There are some small references made to some of the author’s other books but they are explained without needing to have read the other works. This closed door romcom is full of silly (in the best way) and swoony scenes.

Apparently there is more in Concordia than just their famous chocolate cake. I love that this book brings readers back into the quiet country of Concordia from the author’s The Love List (contemporary romance) series only to find that it’s not so quiet after all. A cat will always be my favorite animal sidekick, especially one with a mysterious past. Po was an unexpected but delightful addition to the story. So much happens in this one book, the author could easily build an entire series from it.

I hadn’t previously read any of Ellie Hall’s paranormal romance books but plan to in the future. If you’re looking for a fun Fall romance with just a touch of spooky, Happily Ever Haunted is just right.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A fun blend of rom-com and paranormal
This book provides a very enjoyable blending of rom-com and paranormal storytelling. The emphasis feels more rom-com but the paranormal piece is there from the start as the main male is a ghost of sorts. Scarlet or Sunny is a mystery author that has hit a road block in her writing. Unfortunately, she needs money now, so she accepts a freelance job to travel to and write an article about the paranormal occurrences in Concordia, a small country near Great Britain. What few people know is that she has been too Concordia on a trip with friends after graduating high school. While heading to Concordia she became separated from her friends and ended up stranded in a train car for twenty-four hours. What she doesn’t talk about is Burton the handsome, young man she was stranded with or about the world shattering kiss they shared. Now she has a chance to see Burton again, except he keeps refusing. Is more at play here than what she knows or understands? A very fun read that will keep you entertained and a great way to sample paranormal stories. I received an early copy and this is my honest review.

Do you like eerie stories that seem to border on reality? I love Halloween, and as that time of year rapidly approaches, I love reading books with a slightly spooky trend. It's fun to read and decide what's real and what seemingly non-real possibilities might actually be real. Happily Ever Haunted is a prime example of a book like that. A love story started a decade ago has a second chance when the "fates" arrange another meeting between a ghost and his true love. This book is a beautiful story of love, family, and friendship that expands and interconnects past and present between multiple characters. It's sweet and funny, calm and tense, and has love, angst, and loathing---sometime all within a chapter! A wonderfully eerie love story that kept me reading long after bedtime, and I was happily under it's spell. Perfect for the season and anytime you want a delightfully fresh rom-com!

This book was cute but I didn’t find it swoon worthy. By the end of the book I didn’t fall in love with either Burton or Scarlet, they were cute for each other but I wasn’t overly attached to either as characters. I felt the story drew on at times (the references to the curse, her writing slumps, strudel and chocolate cake), but then other times it felt rushed and underdeveloped (how the curse was exactly lifted, from meeting and spending time together twice to being engaged and both thinking that they left the other first). I also didn’t care for the verbiage at times, it almost felt childish and not romantic (boofriend, The Lady Longslipper Chatterly of Stumpington, fundue, the multitude of cat and ghost puns). I was hoping for a lot more from this, I really wanted a cute PG13 ghost love story, but I didn’t work for me.

Burton and Sunny

“Our story is how the grumpy ghost and the strudel loving girl fell in love.” Happily Ever Haunted is such a rollicking and surprising story with a happily ever after. And it’s not scary. There is plenty going on in this story, action, adventure, magic, surprises, strange creatures, strange places, and love. You won’t want to miss any of it. It’s perfect for Halloween or any other time of year, especially if you like a fun and exciting story with magical creatures but is not gory or creepy. I loved all the ghoulish frightening figures that aren’t scary at all. I love all the creative names of creatures and places. Who knew a ghost story would be so romantic. And funny. And lighthearted. Go read it.

Happily Ever Haunted is a sweet, paranormal romance novella. It can be read as a stand alone.

I had so much fun reading this book! I was not expecting the mystery that came along with it but it made the book completely unputdownable!!

This was my first romance with a ghost and I really enjoyed it! It was fun to navigate the intricacies of a ghost and a human falling in love.

I don’t want to say too much and spoil all the fun in the book but let’s just say that Burton is one dreamy ghost. And Sunny brings him back to life (literally.)

If you love spooky, mysterious vibes (that aren’t scary) definitely add this book to your TBR!

📖 Thank you to the author for the advanced copy of this book, all opinions are my own.

Awesome! I couldn’t get enough of this brilliantly structured imagery. When is a ghost not a ghost? When he’s an heir apparent Prince that’s been cursed by a potion meant for his brother. Scarlett’s writing has hit a slump, she is just about keeping her head above water. Black cats , are they lucky or unlucky? Depends on your point of view . Speaking of which , this story is narrated in Scarlett and Burton’s points of view . She met a man , they arranged to meet again but was ghosted . She hasn’t got over it or him, and when she gets a big scoop paranormal story to write , she tells him all about it , for some reason… when she’s on the train heading to Concordia however, who does she see but him, well a very fade almost transparent him. It seems the reason for the ghosting was because for all intents and purposes he is now a ghost. The only thing to break the curse is his first real sweetheart …This story has everything, it’s swoon , groan , laugh out loud , edge of your seat immersive and a fun light smile a minute reading experience.

Loved it

I love Paranormal romance and i really enjoyed this. The story was interesting and kept you wanting to find out more about how the curse came to be and why it worked the way it did. Starlet and Burton are both interesting characters and i loved reading their story from their first meeting to their confessions on keep a secret , it was all so good. I wonder if Dynasty has her own book cause her comment about being a wolves mate is what made her want to escape Concordia in the first place made me intrigued and want to read about it.

I actually loved this ghostly romance story. I have never read a halloween/paranormal book before. I don't necessarily love to be creeped out-scared. But this book was spooktacularily done with a romcom twist! It reminded me of a fairytale, needing the spell to be broken and the HEA, but involving a ghost, black cat, and a witch. I loved the friendly flirty banter, the nicknames, and forced proximity. I love the handholding and the first kiss. The secret message board. The chocolate and Concordia easter egg.

Happily Ever Haunted

Such a funny “haunting” story just in time for Halloween. Started not to get this book because I normally do not care for paranormal stories. I do love to read anything Ellie Hall writes so I decided to try it out. It should come with a warning label to not start reading late in the day because you will definitely want to finish the book before turning in for the night for two reasons. One being it is that good; two because it is so funny you will probably waken anyone who has gone to sleep before you finished.

crazy fun

This book had all the items that I find interesting when I want to read something before I go to sleep - Royals, magic, cats, and fantastically interesting people. It’s really hard to describe this other than how Hall put it in the subtitle. It’s romantic. It’s a comedy. It’s paranormal it’s got monsters and it is a definite mashup. But I highly recommend you read this if you like any of those topics or just want a really fun entertaining book that gives you happy dreams.

I gave it 8 chapters and it just wasn't going anywhere. I didn't really like the author's writing style or the back and forth between the heroine's meandering thoughts and the hero's "secret" confessionals and his back story. It was a lot of "tell" instead of "show" for his side. After reading other reviews that the couple doesn't even meet until the book is nearly half over and that it didn't seem to get better, I gave up.

It was an interesting idea but the execution just didn't work for me.

This is such a fun, witty and swoony rom-com paranormal story that I loved reading. Scarlet is known as Sunny because she has such a positive outlook, and she goes to Concordia to write a story. Burton is Prince of Concordia who had an unfortunate event that happened years ago. Then there is the mysterious cat with orange eyes, so much fun in this book. I loved this fun book, and it will make you smile as much as it did me 😊

What Fun!

I already enjoyed this author's other books, so I was excited to read one dealing with a ghost. Sunny and Burton's relationship was other worldly for sure. He was a ghost. She was not. They had met years prior and had crushes on each other. Now she's back in his area and wants to break the curse he's under. Delightful story, persevering optimism, and a happy ending. Fun read.

I read the synopsis on this book and was a bit hesitant at first. But I am so glad I read this! It was a sweet and cute read. It was clean and wholesome and had fairy tale vibes. Perfect! Scarlet and Burton both make so many discoveries about life and grow so much through the story. Who to trust and not trust. In the end, it all comes together in the cutest way. I will be reading this again.

Freaky Doesn’t Come Close!

I don’t read a lot of fantasy, and I don’t like to be scared. So I read this book with a little trepidation. But it wasn’t long before I was pleasantly surprised and knew I would not only enjoy this book but absolutely love it. Ellie weaves tales so vivid you think you’re right there. And I love that their characters were able to save each other. Don’t wanna give anything away, but two thumbs up for this one!
