Forty and fabulous is my motto. It’s been twenty years since I escaped Whispering Willows and my humble beginnings.
Now I live in LA, working my dream job as head witch at a growing corporation, getting paid the big bucks to cast spells some might find morally questionable.
Life is perfect.
Until the night my boyfriend surprises me with a “romantic” getaway in the middle of nowhere, and I find a shovel and rope in his trunk. Romance is truly dead.
Worse, I somehow cast a curse upon myself. Now some stalker ghosts want to force me into my past, present, and future.
I have to return home, the only place I can get the answers I need.
All while dealing with a mother who hasn’t forgiven me for leaving and a childhood best friend who’s aged into a sexy werewolf.
Forget head witch, I’m going to be a dead witch unless I find a way to stop these ghosts from taking my soul, and any chance of redemption I may have along with it.
Well, that was an interesting read. Not sure if it was me or the storyline but I was quite confused on who Emerson was until about 1/2 way through the book when other characters started to show up from previous books in the series. Now that I have said that I did enjoy the story.
Emerson was a character that you could hate and love. She has a chip on her shoulder that has alienated herself from where she grew up. She took off just out of high school and never looked back on Whispering Willows. She got as far away as she could and made something of herself but at what cost. Well, she is going to find out when the ghosts of past, present and future come knocking.
The story like I said was confusing at first but I did enjoy it. This is not a standalone book you really should read the whole series starting with Be Careful What you Witch For, Your Witch is My Command, and Witch Fulfillment to make sense of things.
This book is about Emerson who is not happy that Haley is taking a lot of interest in her boyfriend. So Emerson sabotaged a spell that should have won the game for the team who had paid a lot of money for that spell. The 3 of them work for Witch Inc whose business is extremely iffy. Then Emerson gets a visit from her dead aunt who warns her she must change her ways or she will end up in hell along with her aunt. There are 3 ghosts that will accost her at various times, Emerson’s past, present & future. Emerson has to return to Whispering Willows for her aunt’s funeral & one of the ghosts causes her to crash the car! She has to get it taken to be repaired by someone she used to fancy at school. The appearances of the ghosts are haphazard & give Emerson a really rough ride, but in the end her life’s path is up to her.
I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I absolutely adored this book. It was such a departure tonally from the other 3, but I think switching it up like that was what made it so much fun.
This is Emerson’s story. She left home after a dysfunctional childhood, and headed to LA and a life marked by questionable ethics, selfishness and blind ambition. She is led back to Whispering Willows by ghosts of past, present and future and in the process gains an understanding of herself and her family, learns that all is not what it seems, and reforges old bonds.
I liked the way familiar characters were woven into the story from Emerson’s perspective and enjoyed learning about her backstory.
Highly recommend!

We return to Whispering Willows but this story belongs to a character we met in the telling of Clara's story. This is Emerson's story. We met her in previous books as Clara's best friend growing up who also left town abruptly. Well, she's back and not a very happy camper at all. This is a "Christmas Carol" type story ... but for a witch. It was a wonderful read. A few of our old favorites pop up to make us feel at home but they are bit players in the story. I enjoyed the book and am looking forward to more tales from Whispering Willows. I received a free ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving my honest opinion of the tale.
I’ve been following the Wishing for a Happy Midlife series from the start, so Death Witch left me torn. It felt less like a finale and more like the series got spun off into something totally different. Emerson was such a minor character before, and making her the focus—after her storyline was dropped in book four—just didn’t land for me. I wanted to see Remi’s young adult arc and how that affected everyone else. Tee Harlowe’s writing is still sharp and beautiful, but this one felt more like a detached spin-off than the ending I was hoping for.
As a top spell caster for a big expensive company, Emerson ruins a spell cast by a workmate she is jealous of. Her beloved Aunt passes away and appears to her just after she hexes herself. Emerson finds herself back home in Whispering Willows with a crazy spin on the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future. A great read which I enjoyed. I received an advance readers copy of this book and I am leaving a voluntary review.
This is about Emerson's story a character we met in a previous book, she's the top spell caster for a big firm, big firm big bucks big problem. When she ruins a coworkers spell because she's jealous it backfires and she finds herself back in Whispering Willows living a crazy version of a Christmas Carol and for this grumpy bad tempered Witch things are going to change. A great story with lots of action magic and snark with a plot to keep you guessing till the end, Barrie.

Emerson is successful in her job at Witch, Inc, doing things that aren’t good moral choices. When she is cursed and makes her way back to her hometown, she is forced to face just how nasty she has become. Can she ever change enough to survive the curse? I enjoyed seeing the familiar characters of Whispering Willows through Emerson’s eyes.
Emerson, the childhood best friend of Clara, has returned to Whispering Willows and she's not happy about it. Like Clara, she never really planned on going home, but life has other plans. I really loved the holiday like theme in this one. It was a quick, enjoyable read, and I'm hoping for more stories set in the quaint, magical town.
A wake up call for Emerson but if you read between the lines it could relate to any of us I loved the twists of fate not knowing if she is going to make it really enjoyed it
What an entertaining look from a different perspective. I loved reading Emerson’s story and how things changed for her. This was fun and exciting. I hope there are more stories coming!
Death Witch! - A curse, three Dickensian ghosts, a possible romance, and a lot of a grouchy witch made this story a little hard for me to read. Too much anger - hatefulness for one sitting, but the story was interesting and ended happily. Source: ARC. 4*
Be Careful What You Witch For, #1 - I am surprised how interesting and meaty this story is considering the genre. I finished it in one sitting. The characters weren't the usual whiny widow, spoilt idiot teenager and okay support cast. Yes, there was a bit about the past affecting the widow but she was more substantial. The daughter actually had a bit common sense and maturity that made her interesting. The friends from the widow's past were a good assortment of characters and were active in the story. I figured out the bad guy but not the reason, good twist. Good introduction to a new series. Clean for the most part with infrequent cursing. 4*
Your Witch Is My Command, #2 - A lot of drama but an intriguing story. Lots of lessons learned, good romances and plenty of eye-opening moments made this an entertaining read. Good story lines with likeable and loveable characters. There is a lot more to their stories than previously thought. 4*
Witch Fulfillment, #3 - Reading this is like watching a hen in a mess of grasshoppers, changing directions continuously. Full of various story lines that shoot off here and there, Clara is steady moving. A lot of secrets come to light and Isabella has a voice in the sharing. The best book of the series, so far. Witch You Were Here, #4 - This is my favorite so far. I had a lot of fun reading the past become the present. Lots of humor, good characters and all sorts of emotions. Laughed out loud at some of the modern language used by Eloise. Source: ARC. 5*
