Poland’s looming defeat forces an American teacher to escape with children wanted by the Nazis.

It’s late August, 1939, and the world is on the brink of war.

The Nazis are threatening Poland, but American teacher Irena Simmons refuses to flee to safety. She’s dedicated her life to serving in her church and school, and she’s watching over the little German boys she whisked to safety the year before. When her old friend Jonathan from secondary school surprises her in Lvov and insists she leave with him before the war starts, Irena balks. Nothing will interfere with her work—especially a man making demands.
American shipping magnate Jonathan Huntwell had a crush on Irena in school. When their former classmates select him to travel to Poland and escort her out before it’s too late, he doesn’t expect the inner turmoil she ignites in him. Although honor-bound to aid any friend in trouble, Jonathan acknowledges that Irena is more than an obligation to him. However, he must keep his feelings hidden, or he’ll jeopardize their friendship.

Irena soon discovers that the Gestapo agent she successfully evaded in Germany has found her in Poland, and he’s after her young charges. When the Germans invade, Jonathan is in Denmark on business, too far away to help. As the rising danger threatens everything Irena holds dear, she must find a way to protect those she loves.

Based on true events and backed by extensive research, Abounding Hope is sure to delight fans of WWII adventure cloaked in sweet romance. Come to the place where the war began and discover hope in the darkest places.

Cindy Kay Stewart, a retired high school teacher and current church pianist, writes stories of hope, steeped in love, and anchored in faith. She is passionate about revealing God’s handiwork in history. Cindy's debut novel, Abounding Hope, finaled in the 2024 Holt Medallion Award, the 2024 FHL Reader's Choice Award, and the 2024 Christian Market Book Award.

A native of Southern California, Cindy has lived on both coasts, including a sojourn in between. She’s currently happy to make her home in North Georgia where she enjoys the peaches. Cindy graduated from Bob Jones University, where she went for her "Mrs." degree. She was successful, and after forty-three years, her husband still puts up with her. While at BJU, she also earned a bachelors in elementary education. She later earned a masters degree in secondary education/history from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and School Leadership Certification through Kennesaw State University.

Cindy has always enjoyed telling stories—first to her dolls and teddy bears and then to her neighborhood playmates. She wrote her first book of stories and poems in second grade.

Cindy’s desire to write Christian novels was kindled after college, but it wasn’t until her daughter married that she had time to invest in the art of writing and publishing fiction. She had to promptly forget everything she’d learned about writing in school and develop a new skill set. That skill has grown through the years.

Cindy loves to research and “dig up” fascinating nuggets from history to share with her readers. She enjoys surprising people by weaving true historical events into her fiction—especially those happenings that seem too unbelievable to be true. But they are and she can prove it!

Cindy loves playing the piano and singing in the choir at her church. She’s an extrovert, which sometimes gets her in trouble. She tends to talk too much and has been known to drive her friends crazy at times. After thirty-two years in education, she retired to pursue her dream of publishing Christian historical fiction.

It’s a good thing that Cindy’s husband is a gourmet cook or the family would starve. She can follow a recipe, but who has time to read one?

Most of all, Cindy loves to point people to Jesus Christ, her Redeemer, and she wants others to experience the same joy He’s poured out on her so abundantly.

This book grabbed me from the beginning. The pace of the story, the faith elements, and the imagery are spot on.

Some of my favorite quotes:

I love this! “She pulled the curtains open and begged the rising sun to shed light on her darkened world.”

And this... "Why? She closed the door against the selfishness lurking in the shadows of her soul."

"He enclosed her in his arms, and she fit just right. If only she could stay there forever." Sigh. How sweet is that?!

The thoughts and actions of the characters are consistent, even when they are dreaming. I'm still thinking about Jonathan, Irena, and the children, as well as their struggles. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

There is nothing like picking up a historical fiction book that focuses on a specific time period and event and it drops you right in the midst of it like you are part of the story. That is what it felt like reading this story. I was captured immediately and needed to know more. This story is set in the beginning stages of WWII Poland in the midst of the German takeover. Immediately we meet Irene who is an American teacher who is in charge of two little boys whom she rescued a year prior from Germany. She is determined and feels very strongly that God has called her to stay in Poland along with her family.

We also meet Jonathan who is a childhood friend who comes to visit and warns the family and especially Irene that rumors of another war and the Germans taking over Poland is imminent. He cares for her and doesn't want any harm coming to her or her family. But circumstances being what they are, they are separated and try to find courage and strength to endure the journey that is to come.

I was completely mesmerized by this book and could not put it down. I rejoiced in the happy moments and cried in the hard because this author paints such a picture that you truly feel like you are right besides these characters and feeling all their emotions. There aren't gruesome parts of this story but it is a depiction of war so there are some hard moments that really hit your heart and make you stop and think about that moment in time.

The characters are very real and you see that especially with Irene as she struggles with her faith and truly stopping to listen to what God wanted for her instead of her taking control of her own life. Yes, there were moments when I wanted to shake her and tell her stop doing it your way... but alas we must all go through these moments to truly learn.

This was my first book by this author and it will certainly not be my last. Her research in the history was very well done and she gives you a mini history lesson on her Author's Note towards the end of the book. She also infuses faith throughout the entire book. You know that God is the center of everything in this story despite the atrocities of war God is still in control. I for one need to have Book 2 stat! While I would not consider it a cliffhanger there is definitely more that needs to be told from some of the characters in the story. I won't divulge too much so you can read if for yourself.

Overall I really loved this story. If you enjoy historical fiction and a little romance thrown in then you will definitely enjoy this book so go ahead and pick it up!

In the shadow of impending war, Cindy Kay Stewart's Abounding Hope unfurls a riveting, breathless tale of courage, faith, and resilience amidst the turmoil of World War II. Set against the backdrop of Poland's looming defeat, the novel follows American teacher Irena Simmons as she bravely confronts the dangers posed by the encroaching Nazi regime.

Stewart masterfully weaves a narrative that immerses readers in the uncertainty and upheaval of war. From the outset, the tension is palpable as Irena wrestles with the decision to flee or stay true to her calling. As she strives to protect the children under her care, she finds herself embroiled in a perilous game of cat and mouse with the Gestapo.

What distinguishes Abounding Hope is Stewart's adept handling of the Christian faith element. Throughout the story, Irena's unwavering reliance on God serves as a beacon of hope amidst the darkness, danger, and despair of war. Stewart seamlessly integrates living out the Christian faith into the narrative, infusing each page with genuine spiritual depth and authenticity.

The characters are intricately drawn and multifaceted, their struggles and triumphs resonating with readers long after the final page. Irena's journey from stubborn independence to humble dependence on God is both relatable and inspiring, while Jonathan's steadfast devotion underscores the power and beauty of sacrificial love.

Stewart expertly navigates the complexities of war with precision, delivering a story that is simultaneously heart-wrenching and uplifting. The dangerous journey undertaken by Irena and her companions is fraught with uncertainty, yet their unwavering faith in God sustains them through every step of the way -- even through the darkest of days and nights.

Abounding Hope blazes forth as a triumphant proclamation of God’s sovereignty and the limitless power of God, and the unshakeable dedication of His faithful followers amidst the terrible tumults of war and evilness. With every page, Stewart’s meticulous narrative showcases the God’s providence, enveloping readers in the awe-inspiring journey of the faith, courage, determination, and hope.

Readers will find themselves swept up in a tale of bravery, love, and the abiding presence of God. For fans of historical fiction, lose yourself in the pages of Abounding Hope and find raw emotion and historical accuracy.

I’ve always been pulled toward WWII settings, whether fictional, non-fictional, or a mix of the two. There’s just something about the strength, courage, and compassion that shines through the stories of those who survived such horrible and taxing times. “Abounding Hope” pulled me in quickly. The cold, uncertainty, and fear are palpable in the prologue as Irena and the boys escape impending harm. And the tension doesn’t let up in chapter one…

I love how this story starts with action. No backstory. No long descriptions of the scenery (though I picture it all so well) family history, or chatter about the weather etc. No, this one puts you right into the grips of the story and tumbles you in as you turn the first page. Sometimes young characters in a story will cause a disconnect with me, pulling me out of the story a bit, but that isn’t the case here.

I was fully immersed in this story—(one of those books that you take with you as you empty the dishwasher or stir the spaghetti sauce because you literally can’t put it down.) I’m so glad there will be more books in this series!

This story put me through so many emotions and yes, I shed a few tears. No matter the darkness of war, there is always a ray of light, hope, faith, and love that rises from the ruins. The elements of romance, courage, faith, commitment, and the many facets of love throughout this story shine bright. I promise your heart will be touched.

First Line (Prologue): Not a sliver of moonlight lit their path to the riverbank.

I have loved reading so many stories from WW2 over the past few years. There were so many people affected by this war in places I'd never read about. Abounding Hope is the first book in the Circle of Hope Series. It's a story of people of faith and trusting in God to help them. Irena and Jonathon were high school friends. They both end up in Poland at the start of World War Two. As they both try to help children escape from the invading Germans, the two friends are torn apart as they travel through the war-torn country.

The title of the book is such a strong theme in the book. Abounding Hope is based on true stories from this time period and place. So many people had to cling to hope, because at times that's all they had was hope and prayer. Those who love Christian fiction will like the use of scripture verses. The characters use the scriptures to help guide them on their journey to safety.

The growing love story is sweet as Irena and Jonathan come to realize their true feelings for one another. As well as a romance, there is a lot of action and angst as they are attacked by the enemy and struggle to escape the Nazis. The ugly reality of war is shown too. This novel keeps readers immersed as they read chapter after chapter. The main characters are easy to like, even one of their friends who ended up in the German army. With great characters and an intense storyline, Abounding Hope will be enjoyed by readers of Christian Historical Romance.

My appreciation for WWII fiction has grown over the years, and so I always jump at the chance to read a story from that time period. I was very impressed by this debut work from Cindy Kay Stewart, especially since it focused on a region less-mentioned in Christian historical fiction. Once I reached the halfway point, the book became impossible to put down. The trials that this little band of travelers experienced was harrowing, to say the least, and I don't know if I would have had the fortitude to persevere the way Irena did. The slow-burn romance that developed between Irena and Jonathan was incredible to read, as well.

I eagerly await whatever this author releases next!

I find great joy in reading books that infuse scripture and prayer throughout the storyline. Ms. Stewart has done this and in doing so, brought me abouding joy with her book Abounding Hope. Irena, an American in Poland at the outbreak of WWII, has a heart for children. Her heart is so big that she brings her hope and faith in God to action in saving children from the Nazi war machine. She risks her life to bring children to safety. This story is her flight with children who rely on her as she relies on a God much bigger and stronger than the war threatening them every step of the way. Amidst many, many setbacks, Irena remembers that God can handle it all, infusing prayer and scripture throughout her days and helping bring peace and hope to the children in her care and those around her.

God has plans for Irena, too, and they involve Jonathan. He seems to show up at all the times of her greatest needs. He knows, though, that it is all God’s provision. Prayer for God to direct his path and provide all is his constant thought. It gives him hope and peace as he weaves in and out of many dangers to serve others, including Irena and the children in her care.

This WWII setting brings a level of hope that is often missed in books of this type. It shows how many of those caught up in the dangers of the war faced their lives with God front and center. It was a wonderful story that is full of joy and hope.

I really appreciated that the story was so full of scripture, prayer, and hope. It was quite refreshing in a war book. It was a very enjoyable read and I couldn't put it down. I finished it in a day. I was invested and wanted to know the end of the story. I definitely recommend this hope-filled WWII read.

I do wish the story had wrapped up completely but it is, unfortunately, not a stand alone book. I am getting really tired of series books and miss knowing the story is completed. It has a decently satisfying ending but it is clearly not the end of the story. If you want to know the rest of the story, including how things work out for some of the secondary (but still important) characters, you will have to keep reading in the next book that will come out later.

Abounding Hope was my first read by Cindy Kay Stewart and I’m looking forward to reading more from her. The early WWII setting in Poland and the historical events captured in this novel were different from the other historical fiction I read and it was fascinating. You can tell the author did a lot of research. I did have a bit of trouble keeping up with some of the tertiary characters in the beginning but it didn’t detract too much from the story.

I also really appreciated the faith element of this book, it was very encouraging and kept the reader focused on God’s overarching plan. Overall, the storyline started a little slowly but picked up pace and pretty quickly had me turning pages to find out what would happen next.

I’m looking forward to reading the next book in this series!

A beautiful WWII story of love, family and endurance.

Wars are usually unpleasant and little good comes out from them. This story shows how prayers and reliance on God sustained people through the horrors of war.
The strength and grit of Irena was so inspiring. The honor and devotion to the people he loved by Jonathan was just so heartwarming.

I received a copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.

1939 Poland

It's easy to understand that it would be difficult to believe your country would be invaded and invaded so quickly. When you are warned to flee, you ignore it and carry on with everyday life. Until everyday life is no longer possible and fleeing is now the only thing that makes sense. Such a tragic time.

If you enjoy reading historical fiction then Abounding Hope is a good read. The historical places and events are fictional but the people have been added to this historical fiction story. The author Cindy Kay Stewart has done a good job researching the historical events to make this story come alive.

The book is set in the early part of WWII in Poland. In the story, you will meet Irene who is an American teacher who is caring for two young boys who she rescued in the last year from falling into the hands of the Germans. She has felt God has told her to stay in Poland with her family.
Jonathan has been a longtime friend since childhood. He warns them that war is looming and that the Germans are planning on taking over Poland. He checks on Irene and her family to ensure they have what they need and are okay.

Irena and Jonathan eventually get separated. Jonathan is trying everything he can to get back to her. Both characters are complex and you can’t help not to be captivated by them. Irene is very stubborn and has to learn to let go of control over her life and let God’s will lead her where she needs to be and do.

The drama is realistic and has a lot of twists and turns. I had a hard time putting this book down.

What an amazing story of courage under fire as Poland is being invaded and lives are turned upside down. Irena is a strong American teacher who is serving her church alongside her sister and brother-in-law while protecting three German boys she has taken to Poland for protection. Her naivety is apparent like many who refused to see the gravity of the coming invasion until it is almost too late. Jonathan is a perfect hero who shows strength in the storm and risks it all to protect the people he cares about. The characters are so well written that you feel like you know them personally and the pacing of the story is spot on. I could feel the adrenaline pulsing as they are behind enemy lines and several times I was on the edge of my seat. I shed tears and shared joyous moments also as God directed their steps and put the right people in the right places to fulfill His perfect plan. It may not always have the outcome we want or pray for but He knows our needs and supplies them. I absolutely loved this book and cannot wait for book two in this Circle of Hope series. I highly recommend this new author to me as I didn’t want to put it. I was drawn in from the start.

Abounding Hope

I was a little hesitant to read this story set in WWII because of the atrocities that we know about from history. The author did a beautiful job of staying true to the facts but not being terribly graphic when it came to the cruelty of the period.

I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and enjoyed watching Irena move from being headstrong and stubborn to listening and relying on God. The faith element that showed up all the way through the story, was a blessing!

I didn’t realize that I was at the end of the story when I turned the last page and I was so disappointed because I wanted the story went on! I can’t wait for the next book!

Courageous or Foolhardy?

I was intrigued by this story set in Poland before it entered World War II. Irena, a young woman caring for several German children wanted by the Nazis as pawns, refuses to leave Poland when she has the chance. Optimistic by nature, she places strong trust in Poland’s political allies and in God. But is her trust misinformed?

From our ability to look back on history, we would advise Irena, “Flee from the danger to come!” But author Cindy Stewart shows the young woman’s driving motivations to stay, so we’re on edge for the young woman, her young charges, and Jonathan, who longs to escort her to safety.

What I enjoyed most were the flawed characters with their deeply personal reasons for their actions. I underlined several passages that made me smile, tear up, or both. Here are a few:

As the conflict worsens, Irena muses, “Well, of course, she was all for God working in hearts, but it would be a blessing if He stopped the fighting too. How many would die before this war ended?”

When she finally realizes her mistake and asks God to forgive her stubbornness, He reminds her of a verse. “When thou passeth through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee.”

Irena’s sister gently chides her. “Unless the Lord tells you to stay put, it’s not a sin to run. Paul and Barnabas fled Iconium when their lives were threatened. And Solomon said, ‘The prudent hide from evil’”

If you enjoy World War II Christian historical fiction, especially set in less written-about settings such as Poland, you’ll want to add “Abounding Hope” to your reading list. Highly recommended.

I have ready many novels set in World War II and each is unique and compelling. This one captures the essence of life in Poland as the German army invades in 1939. It features an American woman, Irena Simmons, who has been teaching there and follows her journey as she works to help Jewish boys escape the coming terror. In a twist of fate, Irena teams up with a rich American businessman to accomplish her mission. Thrown apart and together during these uncertain times, readers wait with bated breath to see if things will turn out okay for all involved. The wartime drama adds to the tension of the realistic experiences portrayed in this intriguing story. Since my maternal grandmother’s family came from Poland, it makes me wonder what any relatives there faced during these horrendous days when the nation suffered so much. For the most part I did like this book. Great story with scripture and prayer. So if you’re looking for a “Christian” book this fits the bill. I didn’t like the ending, it was a disappointment. To give a blurb about Teresa in the epilogue just wasn’t enough for me. Maybe in the sequel there will be a reunion? Fingers crossed. But I don’t know if I’ll read it. It was just lacking a bit and I can’t really describe why!

I couldn't put it down!

This is the best WWII historical fiction I've read! As a Christian, I love the quoted Scripture and prayers, and I loved reading about the 2 main characters and their growth in trusting God! The descriptions of warfare, of the battles, of the evil of the Nazis and the Soviets (before they became part of the Allies), of the resistance of the Polish, of the goodness and kindness of others, were all so vivid. Thank you, Cindy Kay Stewart, for writing this book! I can't wait to read more!

"Abounding Hope" by Cindy Kay Stewart is a superbly written historical fiction. The book is fiction, but according to the author, none of the historical events and places are fictional; they are real. Cindy Stewart has done extensive research to stay true to the historical events during WWII in the setting of this book.

This book is a little personal to me since I was in the military and my dad before me was in WWII. I know a lot about my own experiences during my time serving my country, and I am glad I had the honor to do so. My dad did not talk about it at all, so I had very few details as to what happened to him other than he was there and he made it back alive and fairly unscathed. I know from snooping around the house that he was pretty decorated for a man who never talked about it. I am honored also to have been born his son.

This book is set in Poland, and the Germans are on the move. They are threatening and eventually will invade Poland and the rest of Europe as history records it.

Irena is an American, but she has lived in Europe most of her life. She seems to consider it home. She has helped some boys escape from the Germans before, and now with the pending invasion, she is faced with leaving or staying, and she chooses to stay.

Jonathan who is also an American who has spent much of his life in Europe knew Irena in school, and their friends were worried about her, so they sent him to Europe to bring her home or at least to safety. He prays that she will listen. When he initially sees her, he is struck by emotions he did not think he would have for her after so long. He must try to push those feelings aside and dutifully see her and the children to safety. Irena and Jonathan meet, but he goes off on a business trip. During his trip, the Germans invaded Poland, and Irena must figure out what to do without him. He desperately wants to make it back to her and get her to safety as he sets out to do. He prays that he will get back in time.

This book takes a bunch of twists and turns, and of course, the reader is left on the edge of their seat at times when Irena must run with the children and later on in other scenes of the book. Will Irena make it long enough for Jonathan to find her and the children?

It is apparent that Stewart has taken so much effort to try to depict every scene in the book as historical, yet as fiction where she could take some liberties. This book is just an excellent historical romance set during WWII. We get a glimpse of how things might have been during a war, yet what do you do when you find undeniable love? Excellently done, pick this book up, you will not be disappointed.

I received a complimentary copy from the author through Celebrate Lit, for my honest opinion.

Abounding Hope by Cindy Kay Stewart is a pleasant amalgamation of faith, hope, and courage integrated into an inspiring story. Set during the tragic onslaught of WWII, this story will stir up an array of emotions in the reader, but will also highlight the promises of the Lord, of His love, protection, and sovereignty.

Romans 8:35;37 (ESV) Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

Irena Simmons is an American citizen living in Lvov, Poland as a teacher to children. Kindhearted, with a nurturing disposition and willingness to serve and help others, she is also a caretaker to three small German boys whom she previously helped rescue from the cruelty of German soldiers and is wanted by the Nazis. Jonathan Huntwell is an American entrepreneur visiting Lvov on business, when he unexpectedly sees childhood friend, Irena, whom he warns of the impending arrival of German forces to Poland. As a concerned friend, Jonathan encourages Irena to escape with her family before the coming danger of the German invasion of Poland. Irena continuously disregards Jonathan’s warnings, until she is forced to flee under dire circumstances. Her journey out of the evil grip of German soldiers will prove challenging, as she is escaping with the responsibility of seeking safety for not only herself, but also for numerous children. The journey will surface tenacious faith in the Lord, promote courageous heroism and revive a buried desire for true love.

In Abounding Hope, the author was able to skillfully weave a romantic narrative within a tragic period of history. Written with captivating imagery and impressive character development, the reader effortlessly becomes invested in the plot and main characters. The story also includes significant Christian faith content. The characters are often depicted displaying their faith by frequently praying and referencing scripture. Although I enjoyed the storyline, I found myself often frustrated with Irena. I’ve never been more annoyed with a main character. Her unyielding stubbornness was proven foolish at times and resulted in some unnecessary danger. However, due to God’s gracious and merciful nature, her mistakes were often turned into blessings. If you enjoy faith filled stories with a touch of romance and heroism, this is for you!

This has been a very eye opening look at a war that turned many lives upside down. The author captures the emotions of this tragedy with a sense of sadness. Many lost family members while others lost their freedom. I can’t imagine what it must have been like to see your city destroyed by bombs and troops that storm through town killing innocent people.

Irena is a very determined and fierce character. I admire her strength to keep the children she is charged with safe. The journey was dangerous and at times I wasn’t sure she would survive. The story is filled with scripture and faith elements that bring hope to many.

Jonathan is a man of integrity. He has a mission to do but also wants to make sure Irena and the children get to safety. It hurt for him to leave them behind but he had to fulfill his duty. I did like that there were sparks between the two. Past history shows that at one time they were very happy together. Will they rekindle their relationship?

I love that the story is based on true events as we witness history of a war that will forever be remembered. Power was so overwhelming to the Germans that they had little regard for anyone. How upsetting it was for our main characters to fight each day to survive. I enjoyed the historical buildings and how they will forever be a reminder of a time when power was tested.

As Irena, Jonathan and the children make it safely to their destination, she worries about Teresa and Piotr back in Poland. They stayed behind until their baby is born, but will they survive the war that threatens to take over their country? It was so hard to leave them behind and all Irena can do now is pray and trust God. When Irena receives a disturbing telegram she must decide to go back into enemy territory to save her sister and newborn baby. Will Jonathan travel with her?

With danger, surprises and learning to trust God this story captivates readers and sends them back in time. We have a front seat to the war exploding right before our eyes. People running for safety while trying to keep their wits about them. Will Irena, Jonathan the children and Teresa find a place to feel free? Can Jonathan convince Irena that he is in love with her? “Our lives are in God’s hands, and He alone knows the number of our days.”

Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres, especially those that are set during World War II, so I was excited to pick up a Christian fiction that fit this criteria and dove in with both feet. I was not disappointed with this powerful story that shows a rather unique perspective.

Irene is an American that is teaching and living in Poland when the whispers of the Second World War start becoming more than rumors, and Irene has to flee with several of her students in hopes to get away from the looming German threat. Her childhood friend Jonathan is there to help her and the children along the way, but due to certain choices and circumstances that go along with trying to leave this volatile area during this tumultuous time they are separated, leaving Irene to go on this very scary journey alone.

The main characters are truly living on a prayer as they traverse the darkness that is Europe trying to escape the heavy hand that is the Nazi regime, not only with their own lives but the lives of innocent children. Their faith is tested but remains strong despite all of the issues that arise at an alarming rate, a fact that was uplifting and inspiring to me.

These are characters that you want to root for, and even though there isn’t gruesome details about what the characters endure that does not take away from how powerful this story is at its core. Hearing the voices of the children was quite unique, though I felt like there was quite a bit of unnecessary dialogue that could’ve cleaned up the narrative a bit, but that was my only complaint. I thought Abounding Hope was masterfully written with characters that you can’t help but fall in love with that are sadly found fighting to survive one of the most nightmarish times in history.

Abounding Hope is book one in the Circle of Hope series that is written by Cindy Kay Stewart. I love historical fiction books that are set during WWII time. This one drew me in within the first few pages. The book is well written and has well developed characters. I loved the descriptions of scenes - I felt like I was watching everything unfold in front of me.

Irena is an American Teacher living in Germany. When Hitler comes to power - she escapes to Poland with three German boys. She is chased right to the border with stiff warning and threats that the boys belong to the Reich. She is settled in Poland with the boys and her sister and brother in law - when Poland is threatened by invasion.

Johnathan is an American Business man and a shipping Magnate. He and Irena are childhood classmates that have stayed in touch. He warns her that she needs to flee before the invasion. When she refuses to flee he tells her that he will return to help her when he closes down his Warsaw office. However, Germany invades before he has a chance to get back.

This is a story of a woman's bravery to take several children to safety. We follow Irena and her journey to try and escape to safety. We see bravery and courage as they are met with several roadblocks. We also see a story where trusting God is going to come first and foremost - and know that with God all things are possible.

I really enjoyed this story. I cannot wait until the next one in the series. Thank you to the author, publisher and JustRead Publicity tours for allowing me to read a copy of this book - all thoughts are my own.

Taking a chance on a new author does not always work out well, but in this case Abounding Hope is sure to be one of my favorite reads for 2024. It is the rare type of novel that has wrecked me (in a good way) for being able to start reading another book. It will take some time to process these characters and recover enough to move on.
Themes of suspense, love, sacrifice, and family kept me turning pages. I felt very invested in the outcome as the story completely captured my imagination. There are quite a few characters to keep track of, but they were unique enough from each other and the plot moved at just the right pace so that I had no trouble keeping everyone straight and followed along easily. The story was overall very believable. Sometimes circumstances seemed a bit of a stretch, but God can and does work in miraculous ways. Irena and Jonathan displayed determination and faith that is an example of the true love for others and devotion to God that I hope I would have under the same circumstances.
Although I had no idea how the story would end, the epilogue left my mouth literally hanging open. I never saw the ending coming, and I now cannot wait to get my hands on the sequel. I hope it will not be long.
If you like WWII historical fiction by authors such as Sarah Sundin, Amy Lynn Green, and Amanda Barratt then add this book to the top of your TBR list and be prepared to stay up all night reading.

Christian Historical Romance, especially those based during War Time, are a favorite genre of mine. Abounding Hope by Cindy Kay Stewart is Book 1 in the Circle of Hope series.

World War II Historical Romance Books are really engaging for me and this book caught my attention in the very first Chapter. Irena Simmons is an American Teacher living in Poland. I really LOVE that she wants to protect the students she fled from Germany with, even as War is threatened. She was very determined to stay even when her childhood friend, Jonathan encouraged her to leave. Jonathan is an amazing man who wanted to protect Irena and her students. I LOVE that Irena realizes that Jonathan was really wanting to protect her, expect it might be too late. She has to find out how to get to safety. I admire Jonathan for not wanting to jeopardize the friendship, even as his feelings for Irena are surfacing. The author has done an AMAZING job in her research for this book. The book is fictional, but based on True Events. I finished this book within 4 hours, it was that intriguing and GREAT!! I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Romance, especially during WWII times. FANTASTIC BOOK!

Abounding Hope is a wonderful historical fiction novel. It was fast-paced and wonderfully written. I felt like I was in the book! This book takes place during WWII. Our heroine rescues boys from Germany and brings them to Poland. But what happens when the Nazis invade Poland? And what happens when the officer she managed to evade before finds her now?

Irena is from America. But she’s been teaching overseas for years now. When war looms she’s told to escape home. But she can’t abandon the children she’s grown to love. And so begins a harrowing story of love and war.

I’m a huge fan of WWII novels. They bring history to life. I love that this book is based on a true story or true stories. It read quickly. I didn’t want to put it down! I’ve spent several nights up way too late lately finishing books just like this one. For some reason, it’s all I’ve been reading lately and I’m anxiously awaiting the next book in this series!
