This week I began reading 'One of These Days' by Michele Sudler. This is the story of two hometown friends Shelia and Charles. Shelia's older brother Jeff and Charles were best friends since childhood. Shelia had the biggest crush on Charles from a little girl and couldn't wait for the day her and Charles could be together. The reunion starts at his best friends Jeff and brothers Chauncey's wedding. Charles was finally home and in the presence of Shelia. (Shelia was a pre-med student in college and Charles a rich singer who moved away from home to start his career.) Shelia didn't think Charles was coming to the wedding because he missed the rehearsal dinner but she didn't care she was just happy to see him. Jeff who hated the fact of his younger sister dating, always knew Charles liked her and was excited for them to reunite at his wedding. After a long evening they finally get the chance to talk. After the wedding reception Charles brings Shelia home and then they decide to get a bite to eat at the local dinner. They then meet often for the two weeks Charles is back home. During their second meeting the take a trip to an alcove near their houses. Where they have a picnic and go swimming in a lake.
*UPDATE 2/1/13* Everything seemed to be going perfect for Shelia and Charles. They had gone out the passed couple of nights, spent their days and evenings together, and even spent time with family. After having the picnic near the alcove and swimming in the lake they begin to feel each other out for the first time. Charles and Shelia are both beyond ecstatic to go to that level with each other. Almost letting the moment get the best of them. Just when Shelia thinks she is going to get what she wants, Charles stops himself from going any further. He remembers he wants to take things slow with Shelia and treat her like a lady since they've only got a short time to make things work for the long run. They both get dressed and head back to sunday dinner with their families at Charles' family house. On the car ride home Shelia is angered that Charles wouldn't finish the moves he began to make on her, she lost her self-confidence and started to think something was wrong with her. However she didn't make that known to Charles. After the long ride, they finally arrive at his families house for dinner. Upon entering they hear gossip and the room becomes silent at the sight of Charles. His dad tells him he needs to watch the news and hear what has been said about him. Charles thinks it will be positive and that the the families (both of them) should watch it together. The father insists he watch it alone, and Charles says he wants to watch it with his 'family'. They turn on the recorded tape of the news and first thing it says is "Top Model gives birth to Charles baby". While Charles and the top model did date he is sure it isn't his baby. When Shelia hears she becomes hysterical and begins to cry waterfalls. Charles tries to help but Shelia wants it to be over.
*UPDATE 5/3/13* This week I continued to read 'One of these days' from where i left off. Charles continuously tries to console Shelia but her family won't let him ruin her. They also get him to leave her alone for awhile. Shelia wonders to herself if the only man she could ever love was ever truly in love with her like she was with him. Charles continues to go out and live his life as usual but realizes something is missing. That something is Shelia. He goes to the bar, takes a seat, and even as fans are buzzing all around him he only has one thing on his mind. His brother Chauncey tries to ease his pain by telling him 'Shelia will come around right now she feels betrayed but she will." Charles doesn't believe him. The next morning when Shelia wakes up she sees her brother Jeff at the table. Jeff tells her that Charles got into a fight the previous night at Chauncey's bar. Shelia becomes frantic with worry and immediately leaves to try and find Charles. She goes to the hotel Jeff gave her the address to and finds Charles asleep in the bed, she wakes him up and he is so surprised to see her he grabs a hold of her and falls asleep she falls asleep with him and both of them stay in bed all day. When they wake up Charles thinks he's done something he would regret but he realizes that she truly does love him and came to check on him. Charles realizes how miserable he is without Shelia and asks her to marry him. She is astonished and does not know what to reply but realizes she too, wants to marry him. They both agree to keep it a secret so that no one finds out especially since Shelia's father disagrees with it. Sunday dinner is a huge deal in both the Avery and Daniels families especially since both moms have been friends forever. Charles calls his mother t tell her he is okay but that he won't make it to sunday dinner. Twenty minutes later Shelia calls the families from the same number to give her mother the same excuse. Both moms approve, but only Shelia's father disapproves of their relationship. Both moms giggle to each other when they find out their children are together and keep the secret to themselves while Charles and Daniel keep their secret to themselves.
Michele Sudler is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. I thought Intentional Mistakes was good, but I think this one is my favorite. Charles Avery has got to be the most romantic and caring man I have ever read about. He fell in love with Shelia when she was only 14 yrs old, but due her age at the time and out of respect for her big brother and his best friend he didn't act on his feelings. We are introduced briefly to them in Intentional Mistakes, when Charles comes back as a surprise for his parents 36th anniversary. This time they see each again at his sister's wedding to her brother, its instant combustion. Charles can't keep his eyes off Shelia as she walks down the aisle on his brother's arm as a bridesmaid. Nothing will stand in his way this time. Shelia has been in love with Charles for as long as she can remember, but never thought her fantasy would come true. In a short time she discovers that real life is better than any fantasy she ever had about Charles. As always, there are those fighting to keep them apart. Her father thinks Charles will only get in the way of his dream for his baby girl becoming a doctor. Being the overbearing and overprotective father that he is, he asks Charles to put his feelings on hold until Shelia graduates from Medical school. A woman from Charles pass has her own agenda and accuses Charles of fathering her newborn daughter. With all the obstacles they have standing in their way, Charles and Shelia find an unconditional love and decide to take a drastic step to ensure nothing stands in the way of their happiness together. Tragedy strikes them with a couple of really hard blows and has everybody wondering, if they will be able to survive, but theirs is an love everlasting. This is such a sweet and romantic story that I know I will find myself reading it again and again, thus making Michele Sudler one of my most favorite writer. You really have to read this book, you won't be disappointed!
Just finished One of These Days...the 2nd book in the Avery Family series...and I LOVED it...the love between Charles and Shelia is SIMPLY beautiful...the younger girl with the secret crush on the older boy...who secretly feels the same...but keeps it to himself because she was too young...but he patiently waits his time...and once they FINALLY get together...the passion and ROMANCE between this couple is DEFINITELY the stuff that dreams are made of...Charles sweeps Shelia off her feet and then some...I TOTALLY want to be Shelia...LOL...girl has an AMAZING man...I laugh, sigh, cheer and cry throughout this wonderful tale...and once again enjoy the close-knit ties of this continuously growing circle of family/friends...looking forward to reading the third book.
