What an amazing book! Don't let the suggested age range of 8-12 years fool you - these covers contain a wealth of information, thoroughly researched and beautifully presented.
Spanning a timeline of human habitation in Chile, the author (who is also the illustrator) covers more than 1,000 years to the publication date of 2022. Most everything is presented in 2-page spreads, with a variety of topics, for example: Guerreras, Intelectuales y Artistas, Esclavas y Marginales, and sections for Pioneers, Scientists, Athletes, Musicians, Writers, Migrantes, to name just a few.
Some general information is included - dates, locations, history, like this one, referring to (roughly) mid-15th century indigenous women: "En la cultura aymara, las mujeres tienen un rol clave, principalmente con relación al arte del tejido, la música y la danza." [women's key roles were weaving, music and dance]
But the author keeps her promise of the book's title, and gives mini-biographies about specific women, like this one: "Carmen Hertz (1945) es una abogada y parlamentaria chilena que ha trabajado desde muy joven en la defensa de los derechos humanos, principalmente en la búsqueda de justicia para las víctimas de la represión política." [an attorney who defends human rights, especially searching for justice for victims of political repression]
The oversized book is thin (fewer than 60 pages) printed on heavy paper so the full-color illustrations don't bleed through. I not only learned a ton of history and strong-women personalities, but as a bonus, I appreciated the context, so my less-than-fluent Spanish self didn't have to look up too many words.
