Pate and Stutz have crafted a practical guide for managers who want to build teams where everyone feels valued. They make a convincing case that inclusion is good business and the right thing to do. The lessons are clearly communicated in a well-organized format. It's easy to zero in on the topics you need to know about, making the book an accessible resource for busy people. I like the fact that they address the current challenges to championing inclusion, diversity and equity.

I'm always searching for self-help books that will provide me with actionable steps. I'm not sure if I've found one yet. This time, I was hoping to gather insights not for myself, but for my colleagues, as the "ID&E" hire. (Ahem.) Again, I'm not sure if I've found any solid takeaways here.

The authors ask leaders to "lead with your ears." I think this is the easiest point to remember. Not saying it's easy to implement. And you do need to follow-up. But leaders may fall into the trap of talking too much or thinking they know what's best for others. Ask. Listen. Then implement.

I appreciated this definition of equity: "Equity is everyone getting what they need in order to be successful." My colleagues really struggle to understand the difference between basic equal (everything the same) and equity. I'll try them again with this framing.

I was surprised to see a plethora of "micro" this and that. I'm not sure how I feel about this. Microadvantages ... microinequities ... microinsults ... microggressions (snuck into the middle) ... microassaults ... microinvalidations ... on the one hand, I appreciate a more refined taxonomy for microaggressions ... but on the other, this is all rather random and untested.

Overall, this was about what I expected: a text that reminds us about what we already know to do, but probably won't help us when we need to act in the moment.

Thank you to Edelweiss+ and Berrett-Koehler Publishers for the advance copy.

Practical and to-the-point, I found this slim book compelling, insightful, and very useful. I highly recommend to anyone interested in growing their daily practices for inclusion, diversity, and equity.
