Broken Hearts #3

Saving His Heart

Rate this book
From Amazon best-selling author Avery Maxwell comes a small-town billionaire romance with a fake relationship that turns achingly real, found-family warmth that holds them close, and an emotional journey that lingers long after the last page.

Never have I ever...

The number one rule in medicine is don’t fall in love with your patients, but Preston Westbrook makes his own rules. Hand him a life-altering diagnosis, and all bets are off.

I’m a doctor without a license. He’s a billionaire without a chance.

He hired me to care for his failing heart, but when meddling family forces his hand, he introduces me as his girlfriend. His live-in girlfriend! What can go wrong, right? Agreeing to Preston’s scheme will ensure I never practice again, but he’s willing to pay handsomely for my services. Do I even have a choice? My family needs me to make ends meet, and I’ll never let my sisters down again. Giving up my dreams to help a fake boyfriend seems like my only answer.

The lines between make-believe and reality blur the first time Preston touches me. One kiss and I’m a goner. Sweet words whispered in heated moments, and I know I’ll never be the same. From girls’ nights and drinking games to over the top romantic gestures, it’s easy to forget why I’m here.

Preston has a broken heart, but mine was never supposed to be on the line. He wants me to believe in happily ever after, but I’m finding it impossible when I know Prince Charming could leave me in the end.

There’s a crazy old lady telling everyone I’ll fix him, but when I fail, who’s going to fix me?

My first suggestion before you sit down to read this book is to grab a drink, a snack, and a box of Kleenex because once you start you’ll want to finish…and trust me you’ll need to stock up on Kleenex. Preston is something special….he’s the take care of everyone else guy and would give you the shirt off his back. Emery has a heart of gold and took on the role of mother at a young age. She has a hard time accepting help but Preston, his mom and his siblings help her understand the meaning of family and it will warm you heart. I loved this book…the whole series is fantastic!

Saving His Heart is the third book in the Broken Hearts series by Avery Maxwell and it can be read as stand-alone. It's the first book I had the chance to read from this author, but believe me, it won't be the last. As I mentioned, it's a stand-alone, but we got two subplots that are leading to two other books, which haven't been published yet. The author was kind enough to provide some teasers for them and I will gladly read both.

The blurb covers up well what is going on in this book. Even though Em has lost her license, Preston hired her to be his private doctor and help him make his living easier and hide his condition from his family. When his family found out about her, he lied and told them that she is his girlfriend because he didn't want to reveal his secret and ruin his friends' weddings.

I will be completely honest here. The first 1/3 of the book didn't capture my interest much. I started another book, finished it, and then continued reading this one. I don't know if it was the story, or me looking at the book from a new perspective, but I read the rest of it in one sitting. Things picked up and I warmed up to the main and secondary characters. I also ended up crying a lot because Preston's heart kept wearing out and I knew that his time was coming.

Preston and Emory's love is the kind that develops over time and it was not instant. I didn't doubt their love for each other and I could feel Emory's heart, breaking as Preston's was dying out. They well well developed as characters and I found myself relating to both of them. They are not perfect, they have flaws and that makes them even better in my eyes.

I don't know how realistic the book was in terms of Preston's condition and how it was handled and I am not going to bother finding out. I did wonder though why Preston was low on the transplant list when he wasn't even going to make it until the new year.

Overall, the book was a roller coaster of emotions and I would recommend it 100%.

GotDANG!

I'll let you in on something if you are reading reviews before you read the book. Grab. THE. Tissues & start this in the AM! I was dumb. So dumb. Started this at night. Could Not Put It Down. I finally forced myself at 2:30am, only to wake 45mins later NEEDING to get more. Then the snot happened and I was without tissues. So I used the blankets. Not a great idea, but I had to keep reading. Finally went back to bed after 4am. DRAGGED@$$ all day the next day.

Ok onto the story. It did take a bit to get reacquainted with the group. But once I did, it was smooth.

You know you love Preston from the first 2 books, but boy oh boy will this guy break your heart. (note this is where the tissues come in)

Emory is awesome, I wish she had a bit more self esteem, but I get it girl. I. Get. It.

Then you have Dex aka Prince Charming stepping in and holy wow I need a group of billionaires to be friends with. This family is amazing.

I'm excited about the foreshadowing of other pairings. eep.

This book will break your heart and put it back together

Another beautiful story from Avery Maxwell. I wasn’t prepared for how devastating the story of Preston’s heart defect would be, or how madly it would have me scrambling to turn the pages. Everything was perfection, from the way these two learnt to love and be loved to the gorgeously warm found family that is the Westbrooks.

"If only I were a different man."

But, he is the man. The best kind of man. My current book boyfriend.

Preston and Emory are the couple, the story, the emotional epic romance that tops my list this year. Every book in this series is so good but this one gave me the tears streaming down my face, emotional love story that I just can't get enough of.

"I want you to remember how life should be. I want you to remember the life I fave you and never settle for anything less. When you get your life back, I want it to be the best version it can be. And selfishly, I want the chance to show you how perfect you are. I want to show you how it feels to be loved."

Once the tears started, they didn't stop. The whole second half of the book I was reading so fast but I didn't want the book to ever end. The heart, the journals, the friends, the twist, the wedding, the dance, the song, the promises, the planning, Emory, her dad-gawd, Sylvie, 10 damn years, the necklace, the picture, every never have I ever, every horrible pick up line. There was not a word or moment I would change.

I am going on to book 4 and then I may just start over with book 1 and do it all again.

People...it's that good.

Wow. I cried like a baby throughout this story. I have read this series and never thought this storyline for Preston. Preston's fate is coming soon, he comes up with a scheme to have Emory be his fake girlfriend. Only one touch zips through and its love. They face the worse situation, only to have a miracle. Love through family and friends they find their happy ever after.

Saving His Heart will have you shedding a lot of tears but every tear that escapes your eyes are well worth it. Preston and Emory's story is beautifully written, emotionally gripping and one that is easy to fall in love with. I have been intrigued with Preston since the first book and was happy I didn't have to wait long for his story.

Preston is handsome, wealthy and from a family that loves strong and will do anything for each other, even if you are not blood. He found out ten years ago that he has cardiomyopathy and needs medical care daily. He has not told his family or friends as he wants to live his life to the fullest. He has hired a doctor, who is currently suspended from practicing due to a breach in hospital records that lead back to her computer. Since nobody knows about his health, Emory is also a secret. A year later he is still needing medical help and Emory is still with him, in a professional manner. In the last book, we learned that Lexi, the bain of Preston's existence, is going to be staying with him for protection. Well, now Preston is in a predicament with Emory being there daily and Lexi living in his penthouse. How will he deal with this situation, well he tells everyone that she is his girlfriend and they have been together for a year. As soon as the girls find out, they want to make her feel welcomed and have a girl's night in. This is the beginning of lines becoming blurred and dreams coming true. The attraction is mutual but there is so much happening in the background with both of them that this pull maybe too much. Preston is a man that loves strong and if he wants to do something, nobody will ever stop him. Can he get Emory to be the one that makes him feel alive? Can she be the Fixen that G.G. calls her? When G.G. tells them about their lives and what will happen, will they believe her?

Emory has had a hard life, between having an alcoholic father, three stepmoms and three sisters that she has raised on her own, she just wants to practice being a doctor. After an incident at the hospital, her licence was suspended until the hearing. She is offered to be a personal doctor for a very wealthy man, Preston. She needs the money to care for her sisters and pay bills so she decides to take the job. A year later she is thrown into a situation that has her pretending to be Preston's girlfriend and not his Dr. Over time she is adopted by his family and friends but is having a hard time getting close to Preston because of his condition. Emory has one thing that she enjoys and it is visiting Mr. T in the hospital weekly. She feels that she is helping him through his treatments. What happens when Preston oversteps and takes control of a situation that Emory does not want him involved in? Can he get her to let him into her heart? Will she be the one that has him living again but for how long?

Avery does have us laughing with the group texts and the things that happen when they all get together, but at the same time, you will have your stomach in knots. She always delivers a storyline that is easy to love and a joy to read. Yes, you can read this book as a standalone but I suggest you read the series in order as you get a little insight into the characters and their struggles. I highly recommend adding this series and Avery to your TBR list.

This is the 3rd book in the series and once again we get the fun witty banter between the characters that will draw you into their hearts. This book could easily be read as a standalone but I think the experience is much better after reading the others and understanding the family these characters have. How the author manages to bring you to giggles with the silly banter while your heart is breaking at the same time is so surprising.

Preston is seen as bachelor extraordinaire who works hard and plays hard. But when you run a huge conglomerate like Westbrook empire you have more money then you will ever need. He does everything he can for his family both blood and chosen, and is know as Mr. fix it. What his family doesn't know is that since his father passed from a rare heart condition he has been living on borrowed time with the same condition. His main goal is to live his best life.

Emily has worked her ass off from the age of seven to give her sisters a better life. Practically raising them on her own with her drunken father. Working hard to become a surgeon and still doing everything she can for her sisters. When life throws her a curve ball she finds herself without a job and wondering how to keep doing the things she does. When her mentor gives her a chance with a strange but well paid request. She's a doctor this should be easy enough.

Will Preston and Emily be able to keep it to a working relationship? Or will the time spent together and the secret they share draw them together? Will Emily finally learn to let someone help and care for her? Can she fix him?

Wow, this was an eventful read!

Third book of The Westbrooks series, this is Preston’s story.

Preston persona is of the groups playboy, always with the quick tongue and innuendos.

We soon find out this is all a major front.

When GG labels him Broken-Heart in book 2, we find out in book 3 she meant literally!

Emory is the discredited surgeon trying to fight to clear her name, but it’s looking like a lost cause.

When she is given the opportunity to assist Preston with his medication she has no choice but to take it, she has family who are reliant on her.

However taking on this job becomes more than she could ever imagine.

This one had me in tears several times, total ugly cry, I had no idea if it would be a HEA, I couldn’t see any way out of the situation. Avery did a fantastic job in bringing this one back from the brink of absolute heartbreak.

Bring on Loki, we’ve had the breadcrumbs for the last 3 book, he’s needs his HEA.

Completely Heart Stopping!!! Avery Maxwell once again knocks it out of the park with the third book in the Broken Hearts Series. This one you will need Kleenex and a full bottle of wine to get through. Preston has kept his heart ailment from his family as he does not want them to stop living and enjoying their time together just because his time is limited. So when he needs to introduce Emory as his fake girlfriend instead of part of his medical team, the family surrounds them both with love and brings Emory into the group with open arms. Can Preston and Emory admit that their relationship is not really fake before his heart stops? Or will Preston be destined to die without true love? Again, make sure you have Kleenex handy and you will be on the edge of your seat with the ending - I did not see that coming!!

“Never have I ever been happier than I am today. Never have I ever wanted anything more than to be your husband.”

GRAB THOSE TISSUES PEOPLE! I have read a lot of books that have made me cry, but NEVER as hard as this book. I swear I went through half a box of tissues last night. And once I started crying, I couldn’t stop. Preston & Emory’s story is going to live in my brain forever.

Saving His Heart is Book 3 of The Westbrooks and while it can be read as a standalone, I think it’s better to read in order. The found family that flows through all of the books is better enjoyed when reading it in order.

This whole series have been amazing reads and I can’t wait to read Loki’s book. I have a feeling I’m going to need tissues for that one too. 1000/10 would recommend this series!

I was confused, initially, when I started this book because I had assumed the story was going to be about Preston and Lexi. Imagine my surprise when it wasn't. This worked out better because I enjoyed Preston and Emory together.

There still is unfinished business and I'm ready for Loki. I'm enjoying how these characters lives intersect into the bigger story. I am curious if Lexi is going to get a story.

Heartbreaking!

This is my favorite book of the series so far. So much emotions packed in this story. Preston portrayed someone who is happy go lucky and you don't know if he's capable of being serious. But oh boy, be prepared for the rollercoaster ride of emotions! And the mystery keeps getting exciting. I love this series!

There are some contemporary romance series where the characters from one book barely make an appearance in the next books and fall by the wayside. But this series isn’t one of them. This series is built around four now thirty-year-old men, Dex, Trevor, Preston and Loki who have been BFFs since grade school finding love. Each is an important character in each other’s books and as they find love their significant others and families are as well. So, while this book can absolutely be read as a standalone, if you’re like me you’ll enjoy this book and this series more if you read them in order. And I’ll be honest, while the first book in this series Cross My Heart, Dexter’s and Lanie’s story completely blew me away, the next two, Beat of His Heart (Trevor and Julia) and this one, while good, for me didn’t come close to the first. Sorry Avery, but I’ve got to be honest in my opinions.
Emory Camden our female protagonist in this story is a great character most of the time. Emory is the oldest of four half-sisters by several years. All of their mother’s disappeared early in their lives leaving them in the care of Liam Camden their alcoholic father who is prone to violent outbursts when he’s drunk. Which is most of the time. So, from the time she was seven years old Emory finds herself in the role of older sister and mother to her younger siblings Eli, Tilly and Sloane. They even call her Mis, a combination of mom and sis. Now almost thirty years old Emory is still the glue that holds the family together and the rock they heavily lean on. As this story opens Emory is in panic mode. She was a budding superstar cardiac surgical resident when she has her medical license is pulled for something Donny, her former live-in boyfriend of many years did while he had her computer. We’re never told exactly what Donny did, why the medical board was so quick to take away her license to practice medicine or even why she lived with Donny whom from what little we learn about him was among other things a very lousy lover. Unable to practice medicine Emory has lost her income which she used to not only support herself but also Eli and Tilly who are attending community college. Sloane the youngest at twenty-one is a successful romance author who is self-supporting and leads a nomadic life looking for new material to inspire her next book. When the doctor who has been Emory’s mentor and biggest supporter suggests a job that tiptoes the line between legal and illegal caring for a wealthy patient of his who has a congenital and eventually fatal heart disease, she has not choice but to accept.
That patient is Preston Westbrook one of the four brothers of the heart in this series and the oldest of five Westcott brothers one of America’s wealthiest families. In this book we are introduced to both Emory’s sisters but also Preston’s four younger biological brothers whose love stories will make up much of the next series. Preston has become a familiar character from the first two books in this series. He acts like a player who doesn’t take much seriously. We’re told he’s a good guy but something happened to him in college that changed his personality. Now we discover what that something was. Preston’s father died from cardiomyopathy while he was in college. Because it is a congenital disease he and all of his brothers were tested for it. Only Preston’s test came back positive. But he never told anyone. Not his best friends or his mother and brothers. He doesn’t want to be treated differently by anyone and he doesn’t want them to worry about him. He plays the carefree playboy so that those close to him don’t ask why he never has a serious relationship. As this story opens Preston’s disease is advancing aggressively. The sands in his hour glass are quickly running out. But Preston wants to take care of everyone in his life before he dies so he’s open to the idea of having a personal doctor to monitor his heart condition and administer his IV medications. Enter beautiful and brilliant Emory Camden former M.D.
The basic story here is pretty good. Preston and Emory slowly fall in love. Emory like the earlier female protagonists in this series resists her attraction to Preston. She worries if she gets into a relationship with her patient, it will ruin her chances of ever getting her medical license back. Her mentor tells her since she’s currently not a doctor Preston really isn’t her patient so there’s no ethical conflict there. But Emory’s much bigger issue is she’s used to depending only upon herself and doing everything for herself and her siblings by herself. Add that to Donny’s betrayal and she’s not keen on a relationship. And even when they finally do become a couple doubt continues to cloud Emory’s mind. She believes the only reason Preston has feelings for her is because he’s dying. She feels that she doesn’t fit into Preston and his wealthy family and friends world. Everytime Preston tries to do something for Emory or her sisters she gets angry and refuses to accept she doesn’t have to pay him back for it. Even though we know in the back of our minds that Preston will survive and he and Emory will live happily ever after, the author does an excellent job of making us worry he and they won’t. So if you’re a crier have a box of Kleenex handy as Preston lays in a hospital bed slowly dying.
As I said the basic story here is very goo and Preston and Emory are great characters. Sylvie Westbrookk the family matriarch is wonderful as a secondary character. Lanie, Jules and Lexi are good in limited roles as Emory’s first real girlfriends. Gigi, Lanie’s and Lexi’s grandmother continues her role as a backwoods granny with a lot of homespun wisdom, a mystical power to see the future and absolutely no filter on an oftenprofane mouth. Not that she begins to rival Jules in that department. Ashton Westbrook the youngest Westbrook brother was a great secondary character too. The rest of the Westbrook brothers I could have done without. My problem with this book is the author too often strays too far off course to leave teasers for future books allowing the story to too often get lost in the weeds. Especially in the final chapters. IMHO the Loki character who is featured in the next story, Romancing His Heart is too much a part of this book feeling forced because other than his friends worrying about him he really has no role in this story. Even Emory’s youngest sister Sloane’s presence in this story feels forced because she’s the female protagonist in Romancing His Heart. Then there’s the continued back and forth between Lanie’s doppelganger cousin Lexi who first appeared in the last book and Preston’s brother Easton. Most of their appearances also feel forced as an obvious tease to their future book One Little Mistake, which is a reference to whatever happened between Easton and Lexi while they were in Vegas for Trevor and Julia and Dexter and Lanie’s co-Jack and Jill Bachelor-Bachelorette party. Then after teasing us with the next book with a cliffhanger for Loki and Sloane, the author skips ahead into the future with an epilogue that ignores their story and makes the other men in this series sound like clueless idiots. I’ve often found a great romantic finish can do a lot to lift my opinion of an otherwise less than great book. Unfortunately it just didn’t happen for me here.

I couldn't put this one down. It made me laugh, it made me cry. The writing was fabulous.

But...there has to be suspension of disbelief when it comes to the medical stuff. The descriptions of the condition are not medically accurate, let alone would the scenario happen in real life. (I work in the cardio realm so I overanalyze cardio stuff.)

And it drives me nuts that the thing with Donny wasn't well explained.

But other than that, I really enjoyed the book! The storytelling is just. that. good.

This is a series that really should be read in order.

Oh my heart! I’m a blubbering mess! This story was beautiful and heart wrenching!

I love this group of friends and how they are all family! Preston and Emory’s story is beyond words and I fell so hard for this man. He’s everyone’s rock and seeing him open up to Emory and allowing her to be ‘his’ rock was stunning!

I can not wait to see what comes next!

Have the Tissues ready

This book should come with a complimentary box of tissues. It will pull at all of your emotions. Once you start reading, you won't want to put it down. You will absolutely fall in love with Preston and Emily. Another great book in the series where the characters seem so real that they seem like your personal friends.

(Read the first two books in this series to fully appreciate this tale)

His heart is broken and has been given a shallow promise of a few more months to live. She is a talented surgeon that is going to try to save him.

Preston Westbrook was diagnosed 10 years ago with same rare heart condition his father died from. He made the tough decision to not tell any of his family but began making plans to say goodbye on his terms.

Emory is one the best surgerons in her field. When a personal matter temporarily takes away her medical license, her mentor assigns her to take care of one of his high profile patients at home.

Preston and Emory begin a friendship of sorts as she begins monitoring his failing heart. But it isn't until Preston decides to fake a relationship with Emory to explain her presence in his apartment that things quickly change between them. In a whirlwind, the huge Westbrook family and friends take over their lives with drama, stress, and strong kinship. Preston knows his time is running short and his place in a donor list is depressingly unrealistic. Looking death in the face gives Preston a perspective many people lack. He falls for Emory fast and deep. He just needs to bring her to his same level, all while lying to his family.

Dual POV, HEA, big emotional dramatic moments, fake relationship, terminal illness, see trigger warnings**, open door love scenes.

I have lots of feelings about this story. First know: Preston gets a heart transplant and does not die. This is a spoiler but knowing this will keep you from having anxiety for a large portion of this book. Preston had a reputation as a man-wh*re in the first two books but the author dismisses that image to the reader. (Side note: based on the first two books I thought FOR SURE Preston was going to fall for Lexi. I was surprised when Emory appears) In general, I struggle to connect with the FMC's by this author. They are interesting but lack layers of emotional maturity. At an extremely crucial moment in this story Emory just runs away. Resulting in a grand gesture from Preston that was so confusing and unnecessary. The plot line of this story confused me at times, especially with time jumps. While this man is a millionaire I felt like he never did his job... ever?
TLDR: I got lost a few times in this story but Preston is like an adorable puppy and Emory is someone that has struggled for most of her life. Nice HEA.

** Trigger Warnings from the author:

"This romance novel is a work of fiction with a happily ever after. However, the theme of death and grieving is an issue all these characters face. If this is something you are struggling with, I am genuinely sorry. I hope I was able to tell Preston’s story respectfully and if you are ever in need of help, please reach out here:"

This is book three of the “Broken Hearts” series. This can be read as a stand alone but the same characters are seen in all books with a sprinkle of new ones in each book. This book is dedicated to the playboy, Preston.

I absolutely adore this story. I love this complete series because I love the characters so hard. Preston’s book really threw me for a loop. I definitely was not prepared.

This book is hilarious!! This couple is corny and funny as hell. The characters relationships with each other are amazing and laugh out loud funny. What I found beautiful and brought me to tears, was the love they all have for each other.

I held my own pretty good with this book. I didn’t cry. I held it in. But the last 30% of the book I broke many times. Not all sad tears, some happy, some just so impossibly beautiful tears. This couple makes you rethink everything.

Live your life everyday like today may be the last. That is what I take from this book and boy did I need that reminder.

Thank you Avery for producing a book that touched me to my soul. Made me feel comfortable like this could be my own friends and family. Her writing is gracious and flows so easily. This book was finished the same day I picked it up.

Reader warning: don’t read this book in a cafe, on public transport or sitting at your desk during your lunch break. In other words, no public places. Learn from my mistake and don’t read it anywhere that you don’t want to be seen ugly crying!

I read Saving His Heart in one sitting. I literally couldn’t stand to put it down. I tried, but then I kept picking it up again. Just a few minutes more… until I finished the book. It was that good. And I have created a new category – this is my first ever 6 Thumbs Up review!!

Avery Maxwell managed to suck me in really early with Saving His Heart and then held my attention tightly. It is very rare for me to actually shed a tear over a book, but with this one, I barely stopped crying! And it even managed to make me a little mad, right at the end. I thought I was through the worst of it and was busily enjoying an upward turn, when bam! Right near the end, Avery Maxwell sucked me in and there I was, crying again. I totally didn’t see that last crying bout coming, the sneaky little sucker. (But I forgave Avery quickly, because I loved the story too much to stay mad!)

We first met Preston in the earlier instalments of the The Westbrook’s: Broken Hearts series. And while you could read this book on its own, I have no doubt you’ll enjoy it more if you go back to the beginning and follow their story from the start.

Preston’s heart is failing. Emory is the doctor that he hires to take care of him.

Their story is deeply emotive, as it deals with the issue of facing death, both from the perspective of the person who is dying, as well as that of the person in love with someone who won’t be around to grow old with them.

There is a lovely romance story happening between Preston and Emory, but equally enjoyable is the story surrounding them. Every character is given the chance to develop their own personality, and in doing so, it really creates a strong and clear picture of the whole family and their friends. I particularly enjoyed the personality quirks of some of them. It not only make them amusing and a little odd, but really brings them to life. And some of the sibling interaction is so real!

If I haven’t made it clear enough yet, Saving His Heart is a real tear jerker. Expect to feel a LOT while you’re reading this one. But Avery Maxwell has done it so well done that it isn’t a trial to read, nor is it a ‘heavy’ story. Rather, I was immersed enough in the story that I wanted more (even if I did go through half a box of tissues).

But, please be aware – a lot of focus is given to death in this book. (Some of you may consider the next little bit to be a spoiler, so you may want to skip a sentence or two.) I’m not giving the game away when I say that there is a happy ending, as Avery says it herself at the beginning of the book. But there is plenty of emotional turmoil to be faced before you get there, so for some of you this book might be hard to read.

And the good news is, we haven’t reached the end of the series yet! We still have #4 to look forward to.

Thank you to Avery Maxwell for my copy of this book and in return I am giving my honest and unbiased review

This book was so emotional for me.
There were a few chapters that had me in tears— my heart was breaking, my heart was joyful and my heart was full.
Preston’s story was intriguing. In all the prior books he was the grumpy brother and friend. His banter with Lanie’s cousin, Lexi, always left me intrigued— not quite sure what the dynamic was.
Until GG called him “broken-heart”…
Preston is amazing as you get to know him through his journey. He has a heart of gold and under his grumpiness is really a romantic.
Emory is an amazing woman— raising her sisters from the time she was young. As responsible as she is, she is also naive. I love the girls nights and the “Never have I ever” game that becomes a constant theme throughout the book.
A brilliant surgeon, who lost her license — a victim of a fraudulent scheme. Her mentor introduced Emory to Preston to help him care for his genetic heart condition. She cared for him for about a year… his family of course meddled and they started “fake dating” so he could keep his diagnosis from his family. It only took one touch to her forearm for him to realize he was actually attracted to her. Although, he describes it as life at first sight, she doesn’t have the same reaction, she wasn’t coming to terms with her attraction. As their story unfolds, you can see how their friendship develops into stronger feelings over their 18 month arrangement.
As he was on his deathbed, her fears were realized and the story takes a turn.
I particularly enjoyed the character development and the plot of this story. The story unfolds and takes you in directions you least expect. Again, Avery is brilliant in intertwining the lives and times of the Westbrook clan.
Sylvie Westbrook is an icon!

Absolutely loved this!

This book! I wish I could give it 6 stars. It consumed me and even though there were moments when I thought my poor heart couldn’t take any more of Preston and Emory’s heartbreaking, heart-saving, until-there-was-you, romance. I cried and swooned and laughed along with this crazy family and this couple who completely stole my heart. I cannot say enough good thing about this story. I adored it. Carefully constructed, the story is delicately assembled and beautifully told. Avery Maxwell stole my heart with this book and solidified herself as a one of my new favorite authors.

Preston is a billionaire playboy. What everyone doesn’t know is that it’s a ruse to hide the fact that he has the same genetic heart condition that took his dad’s life and will steal his without a transplant. Emory is a surgeon and his caregiver who is unable to practice bc of a bogus claim against her. She raised her three sisters and taken care of them every step of the way since her mom died, but Em has never had anyone take care of her. In order to hide his condition from his family as his condition begins to deteriorate, Emory agrees to be Preston’s fake girlfriend. And then, oh, holy swooning! It’s angst filled and beyond romantic. This is easily in my top ten reads of the year. I will say, the book left me with a lot of questions, but I have a feeling they will all be revealed as the series continues.

Saving his Heart is third in the series and best appreciated read in order. This is my favorite in the series. 5 stars, 2 peppers

Okay, my usuals to get out of the way...

1. I do not do spoilers unless warned.
2. Read the summary above; it will tell you what the book is about. I will not reiterate.
3. This could be a standalone but is part of a series and other characters, come and go throughout the story. It would be best enjoyed reading all books in order, which I recommend
4. Characters are well developed and so much fun.
5. No errors that I caught as far as editing.
7. This author was not new to me.

Preston and Emory are two people desperate to care for those they hold nearest and dearest.

Preston was a job to Emory - a way to provide for her sisters...until he wasn't. He was more.
Emory was a necessity - a beautiful necessity - Preston dearly wished he didn't need. And then she was more.

Together out of necessity, these two find a love neither planned to have for they both knew the fairy tale was just that. There was no happily ever after for them...until their story changed and left open the possibility.

Avery has delivered what I expect from her books - intelligent, real characters; humor, quips I'll likely steal for usage in my life, a portrait of family found in unexpected places - and with Preston's story - hope...with a tiny bit of mystery to keep you begging for more. With this series, she has introduced us to a family that takes you by the hand, grabs hold of your heart and includes you on the ride we call life in all of its ups and downs.
