The Renegade

Cole McCord, the most dangerous man in Colorado, is a hired gun with a hardened heart. No man will ever claim his loyalty again . . . and no woman will ever win his love. So when he accepts headstrong Aurora Benton's offer to be her bodyguard on a treacherous cattle drive he tells her it's strictly business, but finds himself drawn against his will to this all-to-desirable temptress.

The Woman

Eastern born and bred, Aurora has never met anyone like the half-Chickasaw she's just hired. He's nothing like the lackluster Milquetoasts who've offered for her hand, and he awakens in her unbidden desires. Determined to make it to Texas to start a new life, Aurora knew from the start that she'd have to face drought, outlaws and a long, hard trail . . . but she never expected to face her passion for the one man she can never have.

Montana is a magical place to Genell. Late in the 1800s, Westerners called it "The Last Best Place" and to her it seems to be so still today. The enormity of the sky and the mountains, the few people with so much space and so much strength, and the land that seems to go on forever hold a powerful attraction that she loves to use for the background of her books.

Genell is also a lifelong rodeo fan. Growing up, attending the Frontier Days Celebration and Rodeo in Fort Smith was a yearly tradition of her family. She and her sisters loved the danger and the drama and the flamboyant personalities who were part of the show. They played at being trick riders and barrel racers for weeks afterward.

So, when she realized that Chase Lomax, rodeo cowboy, who was a character in her first single title romance, Montana Blue, would be the hero of her next book, Montana Gold, she felt she had been given the best of all possible worlds. What a perfect excuse for attending more rodeos and performances of the PBR, the Professional Bull Riders! What a great reason to make another trip to Montana! What a marvelous opportunity to write about two of her deepest passions!

Genell Dellin has published more than 25 novels. Her historical romances have won multiple awards from Romantic Times BOOKclub and the University of Oklahoma School of Professional Writing. She also receives hundreds of letters from readers in response to her contemporary inspirational romances written as Gena Dalton for the Steeple Hill Books imprint.

She lives with her husband in rural Oklahoma on a limestone hillside not far from a marker proclaiming the highest spot in the Cherokee Nation. Since their son has grown up and gone away to be a QuarterHorse trainer, they share their place with only four-footed family members. The bossy cat named Smokey keeps Genell company while she writes and sometimes offers her advice.

*Cherokee Warriors is Genell's second Cherokee series for Avon Books inspired by family stories about her great-grandmother, who was born on the way to Indian Territory from Georgia.
*Montana Gold is a sequel to Montana Blue.
*Montana Gold is the second in Genell's series of single title contemporary romances set in Montana. "Chase Lomax is a perfect example of what grit and daring can accomplish," she says. "I loved writing him. He inspired me."

Average writing and story.

Heroine annoyed me for trying to resist the hero for absolutely no reason, though. Sure, she was "the boss" and all that, but when it comes to making decisions that make sense, I didn't like her "I can handle it" attitude about everything, even though situation after situation proved to her that she DID in fact need help. This set up a completely unnecessary enemies-to-lovers romance a la bickering = romantic tension; and yeah, I'm not really into those kinds of romances.

I just finished this book and I did like the storyline. I was frustrated with the male character at times, especially after Aurora came to him. I Wanted to knock sense into him. This story really needed an epilogue. If it had that or at least some more storyline at the end I would’ve given this book 5 stars. Didn’t get to have a glimpse of the HEA which after investing so much time reading and getting involved with the characters is a little disappointing.

Native American?

T his was really a good story. I only gave it three stars because there was nothing to differentiate Cole from any other nationality. No Native American culture. The way the book read the other characters never noticed he was a half-breed. That omission and failure to develop other characters makes me think maybe I should have rated it two stars.

All that buildups are for what?! I was really loving the pace and the chemistry between Cole and Aurora. Their camaraderie, Aurora’s fearless nature paired with Cole’s strength and hostility make them a power couple. But damn! The ending was quite abrupt and cut short, wish we would have an epilogue of their wedding or their married life!

Aurora Benton is all alone and determined to drive her cattle to Texas where she is going to start her own ranch and her new life. But a local rancher has also determined to take what is hers and threatens her life, so she seeks out a bodyguard in ex-Ranger Cole McCord. He's not easily led and their stubbornness clashes constantly, but Cole is surprised by Aurora's determination and sheer grit. He admires her and is definitely attracted. But Cole is a wanderer and Aurora needs someone who will stay. So even if they do fall in love, what future could they share?

This is pretty typical of this author's stories. She sets up a very feisty heroine, whose particular brand of stubborness has a tendency to irritate me. She's strong and independent, but Aurora is also so determined to do things her way and to be in charge that she's almost an idiot about refusing good advice. I will give credit here that at least Aurora is able to realize when she's been an idiot, it's just not always so easy for her to admit it. Cole is pretty smug and arrogant sometimes, but he always remains likeable. Except for when he's breaking our heroine's heart...but that's romance. What I really liked about this story was the friendship building - to where these two, even though they realize they can't be together, are able to trust and depend on one another. It's a real solid friendship. I also liked the angst as . That was some good stuff. Downside though was that the ending and wrap up were entirely too short. This book (and a few others of this author's stories IMHO) would be so much better with an epilogue or a slightly more drawn out conclusion.
