History of the World Map by Map effectively provides a broad overview of human history through its' portrayal of societies, cultures, and events. As well as covering a wide variety of time periods, the author also puts notable effort to cover a wide variety of cultures. This including many South-East Asian and African societies that are not frequently covered by similar books which often stick to more famous places and events. One example of this is the books depiction of the regional political and economic influence of the empire of Mali and other African kingdoms such as Zimbabwe. The maps in the book are also interesting and informative without being too cluttered most of the time. Due to its' preference for portraying a broad scope of events rather than focussing heavily on a specific topic, the book appeals to a broader audience of more casual readers, though it is not as useful to people who would prefer more in-depth information.
