Personally, I’ve never had much of an issue with the fae. Sure, I was as surprised as any lass when they burst into our world over a decade ago, but every race has its pricks, us humans included.
When the fae leave their calling card in my bed, I’ve got no choice but to go on the run, fleeing into the vast Scottish Highlands. I’d been Selected, and nobody was going to bat an eyelash when the fae came for me.
Where are they taking us and for what? It’s anybody’s guess, but if I’d won a luxury cruise with topless hotties serving me aged scotch, then why would they go to such lengths to hide any information?
Hard pass on the kidnapping, thanks.
Unfortunately for me, the fae have sent one of their most vicious hunters to chase me down—a sinfully scarred lamia with fangs dripping venom.
Unfortunately for him, I did years of military training in these Highlands and I won’t be going down without a fight. It might be cold out, but the thrill of the hunt is sure to heat my blood.
Judging by the hungry looks he gives me whenever we clash, I’m not the only one enjoying the chase…
Rattled is a fast-burn, why choose paranormal romance novella, with enemies-to-lovers vibes. It's the first book in the Monster Mate Hunt series, so please mind the slight cliff. More love interests are introduced throughout the series. See author website for CWs. This series is set in the same universe as the completed Fae Mate Hunt series, with some crossover, but can be read independently.
Sakura Black is a British author who spends her days pretending to be a sensible adult. Most of the time, she gets to write steamy fantasy and paranormal romance, often dreaming up wild stories about frightfully sweet monsters and the women they’re lucky enough to fall horns over tail for.
Well, the usual happened. Tough battle ready chick goes from hard core to useless and distracted when the d- comes out. She finally remembers to ask important questions, but only after her teeth were rattled. Pun intended. And of course, that's the signal for the end of the book. Sigh. I had hopes for this one as she did a decent job of staying ahead of her pursuer almost the entire novella. But seeing how this one ended, and the blurb mentioning how the next leans, I'm guessing that any seriousness and plot quickly get lost in a mound of steam scenes that provide nothing of substance. If nothing more than d- than plot lines are your thing then this series should spark joy. Just, come on, author, quit labeling these as romances. Just go ahead and stick them in the erotica section. Nothing wrong with erotica, but at least readers aren't expecting actual romance and being served cheap bangs instead. No bonding. No character development. No plot outside stay away until it's time to crawl your man, or rather, men. Romance involves bonding moments, whispered hopes and dreams, shared values or lively debates over contrasting ones, trading memories, and gifts of who you are- and I'm not talking about steam scenes. They should be bonuses not the basis. Romance can have erotic elements but erotica is not romance. There are authors who have the genre down and provide actual romances, I'll continue to seek them out.
Also, this looks to follow the Fae Mate series. A series that I've actively avoided because it looked like an unwieldy amount of mates with nothing to provide but fluff and running for useless reasons. Especially as she keeps apparently giving in and collecting mates like a trading deck for competition. So, the world building, such as it may have been, could have been in there. But readers new to the author wouldn't have a clue about that.
Props for a handful of cute one liners and a brief holdout hope for a strong female lead. Before actively dashing said hopes.
Oh, and trigger warnings for those who don't feel like jumping through 30 hoops to find the ones hidden on a website that is linked through the book, hidden in a forward...not in the blurb where readers can make an informed decision. Warnings for previous attempted sexual assault, because apparently no one can write a romance without abusing their heroines beforehand. Ugh. Oh, but it's ok, it's all explained away by his using fairy drugs, so he's all good and she got the boot from the military. Nevermind that his drug use should have had him booted and pension cut. And I know women who report assaults often suffer more than their abusers, but even she was bleating about the drug use being the issue not the assault. If she, the victim, is drinking the koolaid why would anyone else not chug away? Oh, and she gets stabby with her pursuer/potential mate. That's the other warning.
4.5 stars! Exactly what I thought it would be. A fun snake monster romance with steam. The scene at the end didn’t really make any sense and it ended on a cliffy.
Omg I loved this! The banter between the fmc and the MMC was so good! I absolutely loved this book! Thank you Sakura Black for letting me be an ARC reader for this book! I was constantly on my toes as the book just kept moving forward! I loved every moment of this book and the smut ahhh so good! If you love fantasy romance with monster smut you will love this! It’s such a unique story and left me wanting to know more! I can’t wait to read more and find out what happens! This book has fated mates, spice, fast burn, enemies to lovers vibes, badass fmc and touch her and die vibes blooming at the end! Absolutely amazing loved loved loved. Gimme more please!!! P.s just check your triggers before reading 🥰
3.5 stars bc it was good, but also too short with not enough relationship building for the end.
The story follows Kelsea, an ex-military badass who receives a notice that she's been "Selected" by the fae for an unknown purpose. She runs off into the Highlands to escape the Royal Hunter, Rattle, that's been sent after her. The lamia then spends the next few days running in circles as Kelsea lays clever traps to keep him off her tail.
"Could you get pre-kidnap Stockholm Syndrome?" - my favorite line lol
All in all it was short, sweet, with a hint of spice and more at the end of the book.
I really wanted more from Rattle and Kelsea. It felt like all of their fighting and banter ended the moment he realized she was his heartmate, and eventually ended up with her kidnapping. I felt she let her guard down too quickly and that Rattle should have felt the presence of his kindred before the ambush. The relationship building and conflict ended too quickly for my tastes, and while I don't mind cliff hangers, that's only if there is significant build up to lead to it.
It fell flat in the building aspect and the conflict for me. I would have liked to see more from the couple as they really only spent one day together as mates before she's kidnapped. Maybe we will see more from Rattle in the next book, but considering it has a different monster on the cover, I'm not sure how much of a role our poor snake boy will play in the future. :(
Tropes: ⚔️ Enemies-to-lover 🔥 Badass FMC who can fight 🐍 Lamia with a big heart 💔 MCs with emotional scars 💫 Fated mates 👀 Reverse Harem (series not in this book)
----------------------—
~ STORY 📝 ~
The story is globally nothing new, but still is a fun ride. FMC has an amazing personality and humor, and it's what mainly paced the book for me.
Honestly, I'll read book 2 because this one was easy to read and a good way to pass the time while appreciating monster romance/smut. 🙌
~ SPICE 🌶️ ~
Spice is slow to get into but I think it'll be more & more thorough the series.
If you read Rattled, you'll be in for: 🐍 little voyeurism 🐍 double peen 🐍 useful tail
Got this book as a birthday gift and I will say this book actually had a decent main character and actual plot unlike other books similar to this type of story/genre of romance, but overall was okay.
Thank you Sakura Black for sending me this review copy for free. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Holy moly, that was a wild ride for a short novella! The snarky Scottish banter was top notch, and the action was non stop. Both main characters were tough as nails, and ready to pound each other into the dirt. I will admit to having a soft spot for Lamias too. The spice was hard and heavy, and the snake aspects made things extra interesting. The fated mate stuff was really good, and didn't feel forced like a lot of books do. There was a ton of natural attraction to go around.
This was a fantastic quick read, and I can't wait to start the next one. This is not a standalone series, so you will need to read the books in order.
This was a fun, quick read. The characters were good and I did love the banter between these two. The idea of the fae sending cards to those they are going to kidnap was actually an interesting idea here despite the fact that it didn't really make sense. Because all it seems to do is send these people running away and then they have to be hunted down anyway. Which is what happens here.
Kelsea recently got kicked out of the military when she defended herself from a squad mate's assault and nobody believed her what actually happened. She's having a very hard time adjusting to her new life and things only get worse when she comes home to find out she's been selected by the fae. So of course she packs her bags and heads into the forest. I was happy that for the most part Kelsea's character was believable. She knew wilderness survival and had extensive training on how to fight the fae, but it didn't seem to ever tip into the realm of her being some ridiculous badass that could take on an enemy 5 times her size no problem. Because she can't.
Rattle is the royal hunter sent after her when she runs and he's a lamia. Needless to say, his snake like qualities are not a good fit for the Scottish woods. But Rattle has already been ruthlessly punished for his last failure and he can't let that happen again.
Their game of cat and mouse isn't a long one, but I did enjoy it. These two just really went well together and that's why I don't think I minded the fated mate thing and Kelsea accepting it so quickly. Being so short, we only get one sexy fun time...which is unfortunate because Rattle has lots of fun parts.
The ending is one huge cliffhanger and that me confused until I read the author's note. I didn't realize the next book is a continuation of their story. I though it was a new FMC. And that's also where I got a little peeved. I am not a huge fan of the "why choose" trope, and especially not when it involves fated mates. I'm not good with the sharing. Worse is that Kelsea literally said that having more than one mate isn't a human thing, but now we know she's going to have multiple. I already have the next one, so I will jump right into it. But I'm already conflicted about how things are going to keep happening.
Kelsea - MFC, badass, ex-military, headstrong, she will cut you. Rattles mate
Rattle - MMC, snake fae, hunter for the council. Kelsea's mate
Good read. Quick read. Would recommend.
Only smutty at the end of book 1. That being said, this Author writes phenomenal sexy scenes, so I am guessing book 2 will be HOT. Speculation, of course. A review for the secondary book is posted also if you are curious if the sexy scenes increase.
Kelsea received a letter on her bed after returning home from a not-so-great night at the pub. The letter was her notification that she had been summoned to join the Hunt, a fae-made hunt where humans were selected to be hunted by fae royalty. Upon getting the letter, Kelsea decided to run away.
She is soon chased by hunters, one of which is a snake fae by the name of Rattle. A good 3/4 of the book is her narrowly escaping from him. He finally catches her when she finds a cabin to warm up and get dry in. They fight, she cuts him, he claws her, and soon they both realize that they are blood mates.
The book ends when the other hunters find them and drag Kelsea away to join the others in the hunt.

The first instalment in the Monster Mate Hunt series, Rattled is the story of Kelsea and well, Rattle.
Having read Take Me To Hell not long ago, I dived into this looking forward to the same frantic pace, an unforgettable observational humour, and a buttload of sarcasm. And I wasn't disappointed!
Kelsea is a heroine as feisty as they come, with good survival skills, great military training, a heap of sass, and her head firmly screwed on her shoulders - making her a formidable challenge for anyone, and especially one grumpy lamia hunter.
Rattle is quite an unusual hero in his form (or at least I haven't come across a lamia like that before) but very sweet, and even quite cute.. for a hissy snake that is!
A super short, quick paced read full of action and humour, and of course a bit of decent smut. This is absolutely perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon and I very much devoured it in a couple hours.
The story is simple but in just over a hundred pages delivers on all the tropes you're looking for in a light hearted monster romance.
"And she was mine. I didn't deserve her, but I was fucking keeping her."
Kelsea's adventure continues in the second part and I am looking forward to find out what else fate has on offer for her!:-)
“If I’m going down, I’m taking his smug, venom-dripping grin with me.”
Rattled by kicks off Sakura Black's Monster Mate Hunt series with teeth, tension, and a whole lot of heat. It’s a novella that wastes no time pulling you into the Scottish Highlands—mist-soaked, perilous, and pulsing with magic—and keeps you running right alongside its fiery heroine.
Our protagonist is no damsel; Kelsea’s sharp, resourceful, and deliciously defiant, and her Scots accent is the icing on the cake. The moment she’s 'Selected' by the fae, a survival chase laced with attraction ensues—equal parts adrenaline and temptation. Her pursuer Rattle, a scarred lamia with lethal charm, adds the perfect dose of danger to the fast-burning enemies-to-lovers dynamic.
The novella format works both for and against it. The pacing is tight, but at times I wanted a bit more depth; more world-building, more emotional layering beneath the claws and fangs. That said, Black delivers a heady mix of banter, bite, and blistering chemistry, making this a wildly fun opening act.
Verdict: A fierce and filthy chase that will leave you breathless and maybe a little bit bitten. I’m absolutely following this hunt into book two.
Why did you leave me on a cliff !!! I literally shouted at my other half because I was left hanging. Sakura black is my new automatic buy author for some smutty monster goodness, but you cruel cruel author leaving a girl hanging like that.
So we are in the same universe as the other hunt books. Troubled FMC gets sent 'the letter' she basically says f that and off she goes into the Scottish Highlands to hide. The MMC 'fae hunter is sent after her ' let's say half snake man ' hunts her through the wild. Does he catch her ??? Does he deliver her to the hunt ?? You will have to read it for yourself. But there's some fun banter in there to keep us all going.
But as always, check your TW and remember we are reading fiction about non-humans. So if the TW's are not your cup of tea move on, dont complain about it, theres hundreds of books out there and so few for us monster fudgers.. Enjoy 😉
"Fate has a funny way of tying souls together… but sometimes it’s more of a rattle than a gentle pull. 😈🖤
What To Expect:
Tails, Claws, Scales & A Forked Tongue 2 🍆🍆 Fated Mates 💕 Enemies To Lovers Human X Lamia 🐍 Monster Romance Insta-Love 💘 Cliffhanger
What a wild read! Perfect for those who want a short, fast-burn steamy monster romance with enemies to lovers vibes.
A story made up of different magical realms featuring different types of monsters, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, which makes for some really fun dynamics.
Faerie select humans to kidnap and take to their world, so when Kelsie receives her invitation that she has been selected, she chooses to go on the run and flee to the Scottish Highlands.
Rattle, who works for the Faerie council, has been tasked to hunt and retrieve Kelsie, but things dont go as planned.
I am intrigued to see how this series will progress.
And the dreadful fae council has done it again... This time, Kelsea receives her all-changing "invitation". But Kelsea is far from succumbing to that fate so easily. Oh no. She flees to the inhospitable region of the Highlands, determined not to surrender without a fight. But the fae don't take a joke here. They send Rattle, an elite soldier, to capture the unruly brat.
The cover fits here perfectly! The cat-and-mouse-game between these two is quite funny at times. - And who needs Loch Ness, when you can watch a bathing lamia? And Rattle is v-e-r-y naughty here. lol
But fate sometimes means it otherwise. And what could have ended so beautifully is ended abruptly. Selected is selected. And it remains to be seen whether Rattle will be able to find Kelsea again.
I absolutely LOVED this! This novella / short story sets up the Monster Hunt series so it does end with a cliffhanger, be warned, but what a wonderful way to get there! Kelsea, our FMC, is scrappy and searching for a job, having being unfairly discharged from her unit in the Navy when she is 'Selected' - all she knows is that this means she will be taken to Faerie. Rattle is both a lamia and a Royal Hunter, and he is sent to track Kelsea down when she runs rather than accept the 'invitation'. Cue a game of cat and mouse - but Kelsea is no scared mouse but a trained badass who is very able to survive for days in the highlands of Scotland that she is hiding in! However she is also fighting a growing attraction to the lamia who is hunting her.... I honestly can't wait to find out what happens next!! I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
A clever and original story. I enjoyed this quick read very much!
In this reality, the humans and the fae had been at odds. Although the fae were much stronger than the humans, their world is not thriving. So the fae started the practice of "inviting" humans to their world. If the human declines, a fae hunter is sent to retrieve them.
Kelsea is a totally strong woman and former military. She has no problems standing up for herself. When she discovers an invitation, she quickly takes to the Highlands of Scotland, her home, to evade the hunters as long as possible.
The hunter sent for her is a lamia - a serpent like fae named Rattle. He is on his last chance with the fae himself after failing to retrieve his last runner. Kelsea is enjoying playing cat and mouse with Rattle, but what happens if he catches her? And will she mind if he does?
I LOVE this book!! It was a short and fast read, but oh, so good! This is some quality monster smut! Even tho this is a very short book, the story felt balanced and properly fleshed out. It has interesting characters, a good amount of world building, as well as a plot that pulls you in and leaves you begging for more. Enemies to lovers is one of my favourite tropes, and Sakura has nailed it with this one. The banter between the FMC and the MMC was so good, I could feel the tension building between them. And that ending!!! *screaming internally* I can't wait to see where this seires is going. Absolutely recommend!
I know the leitmotif of the book from the Fae Mate Hunt series. But in my opinion, Monster Mate Hunt promises to be more interesting. All this thanks to Kelsea - a fierce warrior. She is a cunning and sasasy woman who will not let others dictate what she should do. Thanks to the skills acquired in the army, she is able to cope with any situation. Rattle is convinced that bringing in the fugitive will be an easy task. However, he soon finds out how easily the hunter can become the prey. I really enjoyed this story. It is full of action, spicy and humor. The book ends on a cliffhanger. I am looking forward to another moment of pleasure in the world created by Sakura Black. I received an Advance Reader’s Copy and I am voluntarily leaving my honest opinion.
In rattled you follow kelsea a independent strong fmc and Rattled a fierce fae soldier sent to collect kelsea. They find themself coming head to head with each other only to find out they dont actually want to kill each other but are actually falling for each other and now have to work together to stay alive. This cliffhanger endding has me on the end of my seat to know how their story continues.
Book one is a slow burn but a fast read with a good start to the series the story is easy to read but the Scottish slang was abit hard to get into for me. I am 100% hooked on this series and I can not wait for the next book Rattled has me wanting more!
Enemies to lovers Strong FMC Slow burn but very spicy 🌶🌶🌶🌶 Writing style 🖋🖋🖋 Plot ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Cliffhanger ending
Ever since the fae came into this world over a decade ago, they pick people to go with them and they are never seen again. Kelsea gets chosen but she's not going quietly so she runs. She has no idea why the fae want her or why but she's not leaving her life up to them, no way.
Rattle, a royal hunter is dispatched to hunt her down and bring her back. But Rattle ends up falling for her and he's not the only one. Rattle is a snake shifter and he ends up being a big softie when it comes to her.
Kelsea has been in the Military so she's no wilting flower and can give as good as she gets, let me tell you. I love a fierce female character and she is that.
I liked this story but it ends on a cliffhanger and didn't like that. That cover is terrible too.
Thoroughly enjoyed this tale. My interest piqued by the story setting in the Scottish Highlands. Having spent 4 weeks touring there and this story brought back memories. 😁 It tells of Kelsea story and her travels to avoid being taken. The hunter sent to retrieve her, is a lamia named Rattle. 😁 It was fun reading their adventure and banter. Kelsea does all she can to evade him, though in many ways, is enjoying the chase. And have to admit, I am not a fan of any type of cliff hanger, 😁 but have to hope it won't be long before we get to read more. I was lucky to get an ARC, that I was only too happy to read annd review. I look forward to more from this author.
You GUYS this just became my newest obsession 😂😍 The nitty gritty: Characters are lovable, FMC is a verified Bada$$, the plot is GREAT (how she does that in 130ish pages??), there's character development, and the spice is HOT 🔥
THIS IS AN ONGOING SERIES not a standalone
The fun stuff: enemies to lovers, Stretching 😉, double 🍆, die for you, fated mates, why choose
I've read the second book, this series follows one girl who ends up with multiple fated mates of different monster races. She meets the Lamia in this one, a Kitsune in the second, the third book is in progress so I'm not sure which mate that will have.
Fae encountered humans 10 years ago. After 9 years of war the Accords were signed by both warring factions. The fae began to settle in the human lands.
Kelsea is a human just trying to get by after getting dishonorably discharged from the Navy. That is, until she received the summons. Humans who get summoned are never seen again. So, Kelsea goes on the run.
She is being hunted by a lamia, Rattle. It's a snake and mouse game that goes on for days.
Can Kelsea evade Rattle until she finds a safe haven? Will Rattle find his prey and take her back to Faerie? Will the two clash with more than weapons?
Gotta read to find out. Oh, this ends on a cliffhanger, so on to book two.
I wasn't a fan of either of the main characters, honestly. I almost dnf this book, but I've told myself that if I can make it halfway I can finish it. Since it was such a short book I went ahead and did so.
There were several typos in here that really put me off. I had to stop and reread just to make sure it wasn't just me reading to fast or skimming and messing it up myself.
I'm not sure if I'll move to the next. It's short as well and I'm looking for quick reads... Plus... He's a fox... Lol... I'll give it time and see.
BAH; the majority of this book is a 5-star read. I *loved* the writing! & I loved the fiesty sassiness radiating from everyone! ...I just *hate* how after they knock boots they're in love & willing to protect eachother with their lives, blah blah blah. She literally just stabbed him 5 minutes ago. I mean, I totally get it from the MMC viewpoint - that doesnt bother me - but it does NOT fit the FMC; she should've fought it more. If this book had been 100 pages longer & explored the potential post-nut clarity a bit differently, I would've maybe given it 5 stars.
I love all of their books, and this one did not disappoint yet again!!! I loved that even though this is another series in the same world, the books story was not the same as the last one. The back and forth between this book FMC and MMC was so witty I was laughing out loud at their interactions and looking forward to the next one. This is a short fast read, took me about 3 hours, but the spice is there and as usual with their books is steamy.
Wow, the FMC was a total surprise in this book I grabbed on stuff your kindle day. With no idea what to expect it was refreshing to read a strong FMC character. There is some pretty cool world building brewing in the background and interesting relationship dynamics forming. Struggling to rate this because I’m hooked enough to want to continue the series and this book started off so strong. The dialog is a sticking point for me, maybe a little too cheesy or the overuse of nicknames is a bit much and took me out of the story. Going with 4 for overall execution but 3 for my gut reaction to the dialog hang ups.
I actually really liked this book! Until the ending…I was so sad when I saw it was another “why choose” series, I know it’s definitely a “me” problem, but I just am not a fan. Otherwise, the book was so cute - I loveeeee the banter! I wish this book was longer and we learned more about him and what happens with them, but apparently I have to read about the other mates and I really don’t want to - so, I shall never know what happened to Rattle. 😩
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Ahhh!! This was such a cute read!!! I absolutely loved this it was so freaking adorable! We love a good enemies to lovers plot, and absolutely love a Determined (borderline unhinged) FMC and an absolutely unhinged, cocky MMC who loves a challenge! And the nicknames! I think this set up for the series really well and can’t wait to read the rest of the series!! Absolutely recommend!
