Annie Edwards has always considered herself the black sheep of the family – a grungy and sarcastic graphic designer born into a family of long legged, blonde beauticians.

Funny, light hearted and steamy all blended into this fantastic road trip story. So many Aussie themes and nostalgic moments of what it’s like to go on a road trip in Australia. Each chapter brings a comedic roadblock that ensues with ridiculous hiccups between our main character Annie and her grandmother. Even some awkward and steamy moments with a love interest. If you’re into Rom Com movies then you will love this book! Give it a read ASAP!

Pearl by Hannah McTavish is a romantic comedy with a distinctive Australian flair. Part road trip novel, part family drama and part romance, it follows the adventures of Annie as she trips across Australia with her grandmother, Pearl. What follows is a series of mishaps and misadventures which had me laughing and crying.
As expected, everything that could go wrong went wrong for Annie and Pearl. At points I even wondered if the duo would make it to their destination at all. I absolutely loved the relationship between Annie and Pearl. It was incredibly well written and added to the drama of the novel.
However, this is also a romance novel and as such there is a significant romantic relationship that blossoms throughout the book. I loved the little meet cute and how these two characters meet. It was a standout chapter in the novel for me. But I must mention that the romance borders more on Insta-love where Carlton character is besotted with Annie almost immediately. I’m not a huge fan of this and their relationship felt a little too easy for me. However, McTavish delivers a delightfully awkward spicy scene between the two characters which somewhat makes up for how easy the relationship between the two characters was.
Overall, I really enjoyed this quirky Australian romance. There were some truly hilarious moments and as an Australian I found many of the scenes easily relatable. McTavish has a wonderful writing style and I cannot wait to see what this up and coming author comes up with next.

This was an absolute laugh to read from start to finish. I definitely thought, surely no more disasters can happen to Annie… but it was truly a cathartic and witty ride to take with Annie and her grandmother Pearl. The disapproving grandmother and rebellious granddaughter dynamic I know many women resonate with, including the countless toxic relationships from mother-in-laws and general “Karen’s that we encounter in life. Carlton (God bless) was her saving grace - and not just because of his lifeguard bod (*swoons*) and cheeky demeanor. It was a pleasure to see Annie come into her own and looking forward to (likely) more disasters in the next book.

"Pearl" had me laughing, smiling and smirking right to the end. I decided to read this as a break from a high fantasy and I must admit this was a joy from start to finish.

Loved it!! Very funny book. The relationships in this book are so relateable. Everyone would relate to a character in some way. I couldn't put it down. Definately a good read!!
