History of Peru: A Captivating Guide to Peruvian History, Starting from the Chavín Civilization and Other Ancient Andean Civilizations through the Inca ... to the Present
Peru is a land of majesty and wonder where myth, legend, and history all come together. And this book gives you a front-row seat!
The land of Peru is one that, for many, seems far away and distant. Even for those living relatively nearby geographically, Peru can seem just out of reach. After all, Peru is situated high in the Andes on the western coast of South America. Those who dare to live at this high of an elevation have learned to live on their own terms.
The Inca leader Manco II, for example, displayed his tenacity by heading a rebel kingdom in the depths of the Amazon even after much of the Inca Empire of his ancestors had been overrun by the Spanish conquistadors.
Manco’s struggle was later picked up by Túpac Amaru II, who waged war against the Spanish occupation. Túpac Amaru II would be captured and executed for daring to revolt against the Spanish Crown, but his legend would live on in the hearts and minds of Peruvians everywhere.
Fast forward to Peru’s independence from Spain, and one finds the heroic Simón Bolívar. He was pivotal in the independence of Peru, as well as a whole slew of Latin American countries, which he was put in charge of at various times during his dynamic career.
Great heroes like Simón Bolívar certainly stand out, but so do other intriguing and captivating characters from Peru’s past. From the great Inca ruler Atahualpa to Francisco Pizarro to modern-day Peruvian presidents like Alberto Fujimori and Dina Boluarte, Peru has quite a story to tell!

Suitable for travelers, or people who wants to get a quick overview of the history of peru. Doesnt bore with too much detail and still gives a good overview
This was a detailed explanation of the history of Peru. I recognized many of the places names and people mentioned. This book helped to put them into place. I found that this book enhanced my previous knowledge of that area of the world - how Peru interacted with their neighbors and flourished. My one issue with the audiobook was some of the pronunciations by the narrator. It wasn't the Peruvian words either. It was regular words in the narrative that were pronounced oddly. It was enough to throw me off a bit while listening.
This is an intriguing book that provides a lot of information on the history of Peru. It is a thorough overview that has a lot of facts that will keep you glued to the pages and makes for an excellent reference to have in your history library.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Peru has a history intertwined with its neighbors, particularly Boom is (once called Lower or South Peru). The 2 fought a disastrous war with Chile in the late 19th century. Peru lost some southern provinces then. The 20th century, as in much of Latin America) was a battle of entrenthdd wealthy aristocrats and modernization through democracy.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. It is a history of conquests and greed that unfortunately destroyed an interesting civilization. There doesn't seem much change in modern Peru.
This is not a reliable history book. It is full of errors. For examples, it states that Peruvian presidents lost their bid for reelections, but the fact is that they are not allowed to run for reelection .
Loved the first 8 chapters of this book because it was engaging and presented like a story. The last 2 chapters tried to cram in too many facts and dates that were not presented as well.
This is a good relatively quick read of Peru's history. I was able to read it all sitting at the airport and on the plane. It's worth the time to read.
Introductory and at times inaccurate (dates don’t line up with the narrative). Still, it gave a general sense of the history. I wish it had more details of the pre-Incan times, particularly with religious and cultural details.
This thing reads like ChatGPT was the author. A shallow summary of events and zeitgeist, good enough for a person who just wants the bare bones of the history.
