Emerson Foley knows first hand how unforgiving life can be, but that doesn’t stop her from living hers to the fullest. Well, as “full” as life can get in a small town. When she meets Jett, he’s everything she could’ve hoped for. But the man she fell in love with changes, letting bad habits take over. As their relationship heads south, another man shows up in town, all too willing to let her into his home when she has nowhere else to go.

Wesley Barton is running from the reality he doesn’t want to face. Thinking relocation is the only way to keep himself together, he ends up in a stormy seaside town. But even small towns have chaos ensuing behind closed doors, and he finds that out all too quickly when he stops for a drink at the local bar and his eyes land on a jaw-dropping, attention-seeking, small town smokeshow.

Emerson doesn't need another man in her life, but despite her efforts to avoid him, Wesley’s at every corner, coming to her rescue more times than she can count. Sometimes, life throws a monkey wrench at you when you least expect it, and what happens next is nothing Emerson could have seen coming.

Set in a small town in Washington, Emerson Foley, also known as the towns “smoke show” seems to have it all — popular boyfriend, fun friend group, white picket fence house. Until her beloved boyfriend shows his true colors at the same time Wesley Barton shows up to town. All possessive, rugged and sweet, Wes is determined to help Emerson.

This is Karley’s debut novel and it was beautifully done. Reading this story I felt like I was in chilly, rainy Washington myself and I love when a book really captures the setting! Emerson was an fmc who I just felt the need to hug. You couldn’t help but fall in love with her determination and strength. And Wesley Barton? That man was always ready to go to bat for her. He was swooooooooony! This plot is definitely suspense heavy and it gave me all the Catherine Cowles vibes so I thoroughly enjoyed that aspect of the book. The side characters were so easily lovable as well, especially Emerson’s best friend, Stella and none other than Brendt 👀

If you’re looking for a quick, easy read filled with small town vibes, protective hero’s and romantic suspense I would definitely recommend this!

Congratulations to Karley on this wonderful debut and thank you so much for the arc! 😘

✨ ARC Review ✨

This was an interesting read for me! It took a little bit for the plot to really kick in, but it was overall a good book! The author's writing style is great and easy to read. While I did love it, I felt it was missing a little something for me, personally.

I enjoyed Wesley and Emerson's characters, but felt it was lacking some intimacy - like actual couple-type moments. There were some, but not enough for me to feel super attached. I felt more attached to some of the side characters than the couple at times. That spice was spicin, though 🥵

I also loved the suspense aspect of it and was constantly trying to figure it out - Karley really had me guessing the whole time. I flew through the book fairly quickly and truly enjoyed it. 4⭐

I blew through this book in one sitting! It was the perfect amount of romance and suspense. While I had an inkling of what was going to happen next, I definitely didn’t know how it was all going to tie in together! The book kept me on the edge of my seat dying to know what was going to happen next. Wonderful job!!

I also love the second the last page, Zach Bryan is absolutely my most favorite artist and I thought the same thing every time I read “smokeshow” in the book. Love the shoutout!

Thank you Karley Brenna for an eARC of your debut novel, Wasted Memories!

I absolutely loved this story! Emerson has been THROUGH it but that doesn't stop her from always trying to do what she thinks is right & being SO resilient. Wesley had my heart from the moment we met him & his sense of understanding & protectiveness was so admirable.

While their relationship forms quickly, it just made sense for them & the story. I read this in one day - the writing, characters, & plot (including some elements of suspense) all had me hooked! I'm hoping to see more from Karley as the side characters were also so lovable & I could totally see them having their own stories.

if you're a fan of..

- small town romance
- strangers to lovers
- forced proximity
- one bed
- “who did this?" vibes
- no third act breakup
- romantic suspense
- spice

..I highly recommend this book!

I was lucky enough to be given an Arc for Wasted Memories in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

This is the first arc that I have read, and given five stars!

Wasted memories is the author Karley Brennan’s debut but you would never guess that. Her writing is impeccable, and I cannot wait to read more of her novels.

A small town romance is one of my favourite, but this one had a little twist. I definitely advise reading trigger warnings before going into this book as there are some really intense moments but those moments are what made this five stars for me personally.

There was love there was betrayal, there was spice, there was mystery and discovery, and everything that I needed it had 😍

I highly recommend reading Wasted Memories, you won’t want to put it down

Karley, thank you so much for an ARC of Wasted Memories! 💖

I was so excited to read this book and was so happy to receive early access to meet Emerson and Wesley!

I was hooked from the first page and for me it was a very pleasant and fun read! I was very curious to see how Emerson and Wesley's relationship would develop and a few surprises in the book left me wanting more and wondering how things were going to develop from there.

Wesley was one of my favorite things about this story. He was always so sweet and caring, even when he and Emerson weren't that close. In some parts I wish I could hug him and thank him because he was being the most sensible and respectful man in that city. He always treated Emerson the way she deserved to be treated since she was little.

I wish I could see a little more of Emerson's independence being built and more of her dreams coming true, I feel like she could have been explored a little bit more, mainly because she has a strong personality and incredible potential to do so.

Congratulations on your debut Karley, I hope you keep writing and bring us many more stories!

First off thank you Karley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. I absolutely devoured this book, had I not been busy with my work week this absolutely would’ve been one of those books I could’ve read in a day.

Secondly, you know that feeling you get when you are a fan before they become big and then they become big and you’re the absolute proudest because you were there from the start, I can’t wait for that for Karley because for a debut this book 100% took me by surprise, I never once felt bored or that something was lacking from the story. Karley has an absolute beautiful way of telling a story and I can say with the utmost confidence that she is an author that you’ll see on the shelves someday.

Now to the story, it sucked me in from the start, I felt as if I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. The level of mystery and suspense was enough to keep me wanting to read more. I fell in love with all of the characters, but let me tell ya Wesley Barton that man is an absolute angel on earth and I love a protective MMC with the “who did this to you?” vibes and Karley absolutely nailed that with his character. I not only fell in love with main characters but the side characters too, I felt like they added so much to the story and I am so hopeful to get more of Stella in the future. And how could I forget the FMC, Emerson, she deserves the biggest hug and I’ll be honest, I at first wasn’t a fan of her character but once I figured out what was going on, she grew on me and I genuinely found myself wanting to give her a pep talk and tell her it’ll all be okay.

All in all this was a great debut by Karley and I’ll absolutely read more of what she writes.

Tropes:

“My past was wasted memories, but I’d make sure my future with Wesley Barton was one for the books.”

After running from his past, Wesley moves into a small town, hoping to keep a low profile. Quickly, he meets Emerson, someone who has always known how unforgiving life can be. Wesley is immediately drawn to Emerson, even if he doesn’t want to be for a variety of reasons…including the fact she has a boyfriend. After witnessing some violent interactions between Emerson and her boyfriend, Wesley is determined to keep her safe and show her how a real relationship should be. Just when the dust seems to have settled for Wesley and Emerson, things take a dramatic turn.

I went into this book knowing nothing about, didn’t even read the synopsis but I was SO impressed. It had almost all of my favorite tropes and the story itself had me reading it in literally one sitting. The writing itself was easy to get through but the plot had me just KNOWING and WAITING for something dramatic to happen. I breezed through it so quickly because I was dying to know how it all ended. I realllllly that there are more books planned for this series; there is some foreshadowing of future couples that I would be so excited to read about. Karley, thank you SO much for the advanced copy–you definitely have a new fan! ◡̈

Wasted Memories is the story of Emerson, a small-town "smokeshow" stuck in a bit of a rut, working a crappy job as a waitress, in an unhealthy relationship with Jett, a local thug. One night, while out at the bar, Emerson comes across Wesley, a new-in-town mystery man. There is tension, drama, emotion and suspense, and honestly, what more could you ask for?

This story is filled with unexpected twists and turns, and palpable drama that jumps off the page; and it's a huge feat for any author to pull this off successfully, so the fact that Karley managed this is aw-inspiring. A truly gifted writer.

Oldport, Washington, a coastal, small town full of characters you both love and hate is the setting of Wasted Memories, and Brenna does such a fabulous job setting the scene, so much so that I could envisage the beach and the mountains, even the main street of town with every page that I read.

Emerson is a multi-dimensional character with depth; she's so much more than just a pretty face.

Wesley is... well, let me just say he's yet another made-up character that we can only wish existed in real life... another book-boyfriend to add the fictitious hall pass list.

Finally, I want to end this review with mention of the inspiration behind the story; Zach freakin' Bryan.
I first heard Zach Bryan way back when the third season of Yellowstone aired, and Condemned played in the background when that shady cop called Jamie from prison.. anyway I digress - I immediately Shazam'd the heck out of whatever song was playing because EX-CUSE ME! I've loved his music ever since, and I've been changed every since. So when I first saw Karley promote her debut as loosely based on a ZB song, you better bet yourself I added Wasted Memories to my TBR so fast I almost sprained a finger.

I can't wait for Karley Brenna's next book, and I hope for many more after that.

Emerson is the daughter of a narcissist and an absent father, and she got herself in an abusive relationship with Jett. He was a knight in shinny armor, at least at first. But now he drinks himself to death, and does abusive things that are kind of normal behavior to Emerson, because she never had a healthy relationship in her life.
One night she meets Wesley, the only man that actually stands up for her, protects her, and treats her right. And the rest you have to read to find out 😉

This books is based on abused relationships, and it was seemly average about portraying it.
I say this because, this describes abusive relationships, alcoholism, physical abuse. But in an incomplete way.
For a first book written by the author it’s actually good, but it needed more depth. More answers…
The fact that she was in an abusive relationship, and then come up to that conclusion by herself, was written in a very non-real, unbelievable way.
I think the memories of the abuse she had buried, could have been more useful, and made the book better. Just a sprinkle of them was a waste in my opinion. I think if the author would actually put the memories and then go from there, it would have made the book way better, and more in tune with the title.
There’s also a lot of things that don’t make much sense, and a lot of things that we don’t get and answer for, or the answer is incomplete, or unbelievable. I don’t know…
I loved Wesley, but is depth was superficial and hypocritical. Like you run away, and criticize your mom, and then did the same?
This had great plot potential, but fell short for me.

Happy readings 🤍

Such a good debut novel! The writing was amazing and I felt like I was in Washington myself while reading! 💗

This was a great small town, suspenseful romance! It was an emotional and raw story that had me wanting to keep reading and never put down! Definitely check out the trigger warnings, a few subjects may be intense for some readers.

Emerson is such a strong woman. Her childhood wasn’t the best and now as an adult, she is stuck dealing with more than she deserves. You just want to hug and squeeze on her to let her know everything will be okay 🥲
Wesley Barton’s first impression had me KNOWING he was going to be a protective and loving. He came off as sort of grumpy because he didn’t talk much but I just knew under his tough guy demeanor, he was caring and would do anything for those he loves.

I loved that both Emerson and Wesley had baggage- whether it was childhood or adulthood baggage- I felt that it helped them connect on a deeper level. I also loved that Wesley and his brother Easton were able to rekindle their relationship as much as they did.
There were a lot of twists and things you wouldn’t see coming, which made this very intriguing and made me love it even more. I definitely enjoyed it and I can’t wait to see what else Karley writes! 💗

Read if you enjoy:

Strangers to lovers
Protective male characters
“Who did this to you” vibes
Forced proximity

Welp, I wasn’t expecting to laugh, or smile, or hold my breath in suspense, get angry, or freaking cry all in one sitting. But I did. Thanks a lot bestie 😂🫶🏼

I’m not sure what’s been going on with me lately, but the reading slump has been real since Tempt Our Fate ended. This book is exactly what I needed to bring me out of it.

Karley’s 𝙳𝙴𝙱𝚄𝚃 𝙽𝙾𝚅𝙴𝙻 had a little bit of everything. It was a wonderfully written story of a girl who deals with some pretty dark things in her life & a guy who just wants to save her.

But the thing is, Emerson doesn’t need saving. She’s strong and independent. She fights her battles all in her own, but when Wesley steps in to show her she doesn’t have to, the most beautiful relationship forms.

Nothing I love more than a protective male who’s willing to burn down the world for his girl. And while I may have wanted to give Emerson a little smacky smack upside the head at times, I was relieved when she finally allowed Wesley to be there for her.

Karley, I am so proud of you. The emotions I felt while reading this truly made it all the more special because I know you put so much of yourself into your words. Thank you for allowing me to be by your side through this whole thing and giving me the opportunity to fall in love with Wesley and Emerson’s story 🫶🏼

What a filthy mouth you have Mr Barton. Absolutely Captivating!!

Emerson Foley would do anything for her boyfriend Jett. She was his support when he’d drink too much and needed cleaned up, because he rescued her from the terror of her mothers house. That was until he physically hit her in a bar in front of their friends, and the violence and abuse doesn’t seem to end. She decides enough is enough and leaves with minimal possessions. Deciding this is not the life she wants anymore. After a night spent with her bestie, Jett finds where she’s staying and now she has no other choice, but to stay with the new arrival to town she has befriended, Wesley Barton. Alpha male Wes, will do what he has to so that no one touches ‘Em ever again. Except this smoke show he’s housing attracts quite the attention good and bad. Can he keep his cool long enough to help Emerson with all the issues that come their way? What happens when they are tested one last time? Dig in because this is a wild ride with a swoon worthy knight in blue jeans 🥵

UPDATE: I don't know why, but ik keep thinking about this book.. So updating my review from 4🌟 to 4,5🌟!!
🏡This story is set in a small town (one of my favorite things in books), and we follow Emerson and Wesley (dual pov, also one of my favorite things!!). She has a nice life, but then things happen that she would not see coming..

What I liked about this book was that it was small town, and the chapters were short, so I would describe this as fast-paced. 💗I fell in love with the characters, also the side characters (will we get to see more of stella?). The story also had some plot-twists, which I did not see coming. 😯I would also say this story is kind of a mystery, which I would not have thought. It is not the main focus, but it is important to the story. Also, I just want to give Emerson a hug, she deserves that. Also, it had some funny quotes. This is the perfect read for fall.🍂

Read this if you like:
-One bed🛏️
-‘Who did this to you?’🥵
-Overprotective mmc💗
-Dual pov📖
-Some spice🌶️

Don’t read this if:
-You are not okay with the trigger warnings (you can see them on @authorkarleybrenna instagram account)

Last but not least, I want to thank Karley for this arc! It was such a great debut novel, and I feel honored to have read it. This was also my first arc ever, so this is a great way to start that journey! I will definitely read future projects! (new auto-buy author!!)🍀🍀

What I loved:
Was Oklahoma Smokeshow playing in my head the entire time I read this? YUP. We all need guys like Wesley in our lives, his character was the absolute sweetest. This book gives you suspense, romance, a little spice, and all the small town vibes you could ask for! Plus the short chapters are truly so nice 😂 This is one of the better debut novels I’ve read yet!

What I didn’t love:
It was a little slow to start and I caught myself wondering where the storyline might go. I felt that it didn’t really pick up until 70% of the way through. But all in all a great debut novel and I definitely think you should pick it up on September 26, 2023!

Thank you to Karley Brenna for the opportunity to read the ARC of her debut novel Wasted Memories.

I really enjoyed reading this book. The vibes were amazing. We have small town, found family, forced proximity, suspense, some mystery - everything that I love in a book.

The characters in Wasted Memories are amazing, that is including the side characters - I'm not sure if this is in the works but I hope that this becomes a series and we get Stella and Jessica's stories, our FMC Emerson's best friends. The character development was amazing. The plot was really good and kept you hooked. The book deals with some sensitive topics but Karley has written them in such a respectful way.

Our MMC Wesley is a dreamboat - be prepared to swoon if you pick up this book.

Overall I highly recommend Wasted Memories - please read TW as there are some heavy topics discussed.

ARC REVIEW

“ My past was wasted memories, but I’d make sure my future with Wesley Barton was one for the books.” – Emerson

I really enjoyed reading this book. Karley Brenna’s words are just so beautifully written. You feel all the emotions as you read. Emerson was dealt a difficult life; she didn’t have a family truly. She found Jett, who she thought was everything to her. After a few years, she came to find out he had his own demons and was living a lie. Wesley was the new guy in town he just drove to escape his life after his father passed away, only to end up in Oldport. He was content on being alone in this small town, but he saw Emerson. Little did they know that he would be the one who Emerson needed in her life. He was there to help her get through all the problem that came here way. In the end, she realized that she heart was missing something, and that missing piece was Wesley.

Wasted Memories is the story of Emerson, a woman stuck in a place she didn't realize she attached herself. Eager to escape a rotten home-life, she moves in with the first man who gives her the kindness and attention she not only needs, but deserves. Entrenched so deeply in this life they built, she couldn't see when things started to go bad, until mysterious stranger Wesley comes to town and shakes things up.
The first thing that struck me was how much this story reminded me of Blue Eyed Devil by Lisa Kleypas. The tug of war with Emerson's emotions was powerful, and as a reader, I couldn't help but feel the struggle too. Wesley wasn't the perfect man, he had his own things going on, and it's refreshing to see imperfect characters helping each other.
Overall, this is absolutely one of my favorite reads this year, and I look forward to more from Karley Brenna.

I binged this book in one sitting!!!

I related to Emerson more than I want to admit. She’s a beautiful small town girl with a troubled childhood living with her alcoholic boyfriend, Jett. Wesley is a stranger to town who picked living there simply because he needed to pull over for a good night’s rest while driving.

Wesley’s patience, respect, and tenderness towards Emerson honestly made me tear up. I LOVED how he knew that it was important for Emerson to feel like she is regaining agency of her own life and mind after everything she has been through.

As seen in the DMs of Karley and my immediate response, “Karley?! Miss ma’am?! What fucking CRACK did you put into wasted memories?????? I just finished it holy shit”

I don’t even know how to put into words how beautifully Karley wrote this book.

Emerson lives in a small town and works as a server. She thought her boyfriend, Jet, was her entire life until he wasn’t. I loved seeing Emerson navigate life after leaving her relationship and finding the balance to being a regular human being.

Wesley, man oh man do I love him. From when he was first introduced as the stoic patron to the epilogue, I swear this man had such character development. Honestly, he could run me over with his truck and I’d probably thank him.

Guys, just go read the book. BUT PLEASE CHECK TRIGGERS FIRST🖤

First I wanna start off saying I LOVE the cover of this book and title. I went into this book blindly and had no idea what it was about!

Oh my Wes has such a sweet heart and such a good man! The way he cares for Emerson is truly an amazing man! You won’t be disappointed with this couple.

I will say the spice is quite spicy so keep that in mind. (I loved it) 🌶️ I also felt come chapter were kinda not necessary but overall it was amazing. The whole entire story!

I hope we get more in this series with the two sets of friends and maybe a peak into how Jett does in the future. Luke can go f himself.

I recommend looking up trigger warnings for this one.

I might have read this one in one day, and mostly in one sitting. Did I plan to stay up reading until 1:40 am? Absolutely not. Do I have regrets? No.

I loved this book, and got sucked in straight away. It gave me all the feels, including almost making me bite my nails.
I loved that there was an actual plot, not just sappy romance the entire book(though I love those too!). I also loved that there was some spice, but not every other page in great detail. Would highly recommend!

I recieved this as a free ARC from the author, for an honest review

ARC review!
I rounded up to a 4.5! I really enjoyed this book. You would never tell it was a debut. It took it a hot second to really get into the story and understand all what was happening but once I got the plot I was hooked. I mean Wesley 😍🤤 what a hunk of a man. We all dream and wish for a man like Wesley to always be our protector and would go to the ends of the earth to make sure we were safe. Emerson was the type of personality that you’d want to be friends with. She was so sweet and down to earth. She knew how to stick up for herself.

I wanna see a story on Stella and Brendt! I could feel the sparks flying with them so I hope to see them in the future.

This was such a great debut! "Wasted Memories" dealt with deeper issues like being in a toxic relationship and substance abuse, but also had a sweetheart of a hero in Wesley and Emerson was a heroine that became stronger as the book went on. It gave small-town vibes, romantic suspense, and ONE BED. I really liked Karley’s voice and am excited to read more from her. It gave Catherine Cowles vibes - I loved how strong Emerson was at her core, and I adored how supportive Wesley was from the get go.

✨✨ARC Review✨✨
This book is everything you love about a small town romance. I love how strong Emerson’s character is. She finds herself dealing with so many hardships throughout her life and yet she overcomes them all. She is able to build amazing friendships and giver her love to the person that really deserves it and shows that he is there for her. Wesley is a great character also. He is someone who shows up in Emerson’s life and shows her that some people can just be good. That not every man is going to hurt her or expect something from her in return for their love. I definitely recommend this book.

I read this book really quickly!!

Emerson is a waitress and is out with her boyfriend when she finds a man she’s never seen before walk into the bar they are in.

Wesley is the man who walked into the bar and his eyes found Emerson’s straight away. However she had a boyfriend.

I love them together and I don’t like Jett. I’m glad she ended with Wesley. There’s a few twists and turns some you expect and some you don’t.

I want to thank karley for the arc to this book I am so grateful 🥰🥰
