Ok. Kara Renee exceeded my expectations spectacularly. At first, I thought, I wouldn't quite like this book. But as the chapters progressed, I grew more invested in the story. Tbh, the characters actually felt like teenagers. That rarely happens in YA as many teenaged characters have a very mature voice. But, I was quite satisfied with the characterisation and plot and the way the author handled themes of trauma.

Oh. My. Gosh.

This book was a masterpiece. I loved it so much.

Other reviewers talked about how heart wrenching it was. That made me nervous. I read romances looking for toe curling chemistry, lovable characters, and immersive writing. I do not like reading when the story brings feelings of hopelessness, helplessness, or dread.

But I did not need to worry. This book was beautiful and filled all my boxes to perfection. Some of the subject matter was sad, yes, but it was ALWAYS hopeful and the painful parts were never prolonged. It has a HEA and a YA romance that was brimming with swoony chemistry while also being completely appropriate. And it had just the right amount of angst. Oh, and the pacing was CHEF’S KISS.

I honestly can’t gush enough.

This author can write. Wow, can she write. I can’t wait to check out her other books. I am pretty picky about what I like (hence my rather low average rating on Goodreads), and this makes it into my favorites shelf, EASILY. I’m going to buy the physical book to add to my small and curated collection in my bookshelves. Plus, I want my teenage daughters to read it. They’ll love it.

Kudos, Mrs Renee. Truly, wow. Thank you for sharing this story and your talent with me. What an honor. It was outstanding.

“It doesn’t matter. Whatever—”
“Answer the question, Liam.”
“Fine.” His lips curved into the hopes of a smile, which was . . . Oh no. Oh no, no. It was adorable. “Both.”

Content-

Language- No f-words. Very few instances of sh- and hell.
Spice- Sweet kisses. And the book doesn’t normalize teen sex, which I really appreciated. It didn’t mention it at all.
Violence- Yes, physical, mental/verbal, and financial abuse occurs. Bullying, on page. (All handled extremely well.)
Substance abuse- No. FMC doesn’t drink ever since she embarrassed herself at a party the previous year. There was one scene that had alcohol at a teen party.
Cover- tender and romantic. I like it.
POV- single POV, 1st person (loved the choice to make it a single POV)
Cliffhanger- No
Format- ebook on KU

****UPDATE: this is the author’s only published book thus far. I’m so sad!!!!

Be sure to check the content warnings, there is some very sensitive subject matter but the author handled it well and this is a beautiful YA novel.

I’m not typically one to have emotional responses to novels but the author, Kara was able to evoke many feelings from me with the way she writes. I chuckled, and genuinely smiled for these characters. But, there were also moments I felt irate, angry, appalled, sad, heartbroken and I hurt for very the same characters that I also felt joy for.

This is a bit of a slow burn but when it grabs you, it really GRABS a hold of you. I spent a great portion of this book thinking I knew what was going on with one of the characters but it turns out, I didn’t have a clue. There are some good support characters that I didn’t care at all for but they were vital to the development of the story.

This book had a great plot and impressive depth to it. The FMC, Madison, really grew as a person through this entire story. I personally feel there were two MMC’s, Liam and then also Madison’s dad. There was a beautiful relationship between Madison and Liam but also between the three of them. The last few chapters completely broke me but it was an honor and privilege to read this.

I received an advanced reader copy and am leaving this review voluntarily.

ARC Review!!🌷

Pub Date: September 1st!

Synopsis: Madison Winters encounters a life changing and traumatic event (check trigger warnings) that leave her dealing with a load of struggles at home and in school. She is forced to go to tutoring where she meets Liam Strom, who is the school’s outcast and lonely boy. Madison and Liam start to get to know each other and realize they both have demons of their own that they would have never thought.

My thoughts: Thank you so much to Kara Renee for adding me as an ARC reader for this book that I will carry in my heart for the rest of my life. I am a sucker for YA romance and this book made me cry happy tears, sad tears, angry tears, EVERYTHING. I have related to Madison, Liam, Taylor, and Olive, and I think this book was so beautifully written. Each character is so unique and creative and I never found myself wanting to skim through this book for even a second. I devoured every word and I know that I will be buying the physical book as soon as it is released so that I can annotate it and tab it. There were so many moments that I felt my heart levitated. A lot of books out there feel very repetitive but this was a breath of fresh air, especially for a hopeless romantic. Thank you so much for allowing me to experience this book @kara.renee.writes 🌷

Read this if you enjoy:
•ya romance
•slow burn
•star crossed lovers
•meet cute (kinda, you’ll see what I mean)

This book was given as an ARC in exchange for a review.

I devoured this book! I feel like I went through every emotion while reading this. Kara Renee did a wonderful job of making you love or hate different characters throughout this whole story.

I loved that this book touched on some very important topics, even if they're difficult to do so. High school is a tough time, and going through losing family/friends is tough. Avoiding spoilers, she covered the darker topics very well, and including hotlines/websites at the end made me smile. Also, we love a dad who bakes! Madison's dad was like the comedic relief we all needed, especially when things were tough for Liam. In regards to the tough topics, I love that Madison's friends and family emphasize that sometimes getting closure doesn't really mean getting answers right away. And reminding people that in therapy, you're not going to see progress right away. It's such an important thing to point out, especially to the Young Adult crowd.

I don't think I could recommend this book enough. If you're looking for a Young Adult genre book, but also looking for something that touches on more serious topics, I highly recommend this book!

Wow! Kara really did a number on me for this one! I don’t usually think too much about a book once I’ve finished it .. but this book is sticking
Kara chose me as one of her ARC readers, and it was honestly a privilege to read this sad, enlightening and overcoming story
I’m not a huge YA fan but this was so well written
The 2 interwoven stories of abandonment, fear, trust issues finding love and resources amongst new unexpected friendships - finding their way in the world on their own terms against all odds really REALLY tugged at my Mama Bear heart.
You can feel the pull through the written words, your heart is in your mouth in those suspenseful moments. You’re heart leaps for joy when they have those sweet, nurturing NEEDED moments
I’m excited to see more new releases from Kara and am a confirmed fan!
Thanks Kara
As an ARC reader I often come across transcripts that still need some line editing of phrasing/spelling/grammar - I didn’t have one instance of that in this book

I received this book as an ARC and devoured it!!

This book follows Liam and Madison as they navigate through teenage life with the shadows of their past, the current struggles of High School, and their uncharted futures.

They meet just when they both really need someone to lean on and shows just how much we need others to get by in life.

I need a second book!!

⭐️ARC Review!⭐️

Wow. I don’t have the words to describe how beautiful this book is.

I quickly found myself falling in love with the raw, authentic feelings of these characters. Not only did I became invested in the main storyline, but also with the side character’s too. Unlike many stories, when the main characters made mistakes, it didn’t make them feel unlikable. Instead, it made them feel like real, relatable people, rather than characters in a book.

As for the romance, I was INVESTED in Liam and Madison. All of their interactions we’re absolutely adorable (a couple of them even made me squeal), and they displayed such a healthy, positive bond. I couldn’t help but root for them the whole time, and get excited everytime Liam’s name appeared on the page.

The author did a unbelievable job at portraying the effects of having an absent parent, bullying, mental health struggles, and many other hard topics. I could feel the care that went into writing about these topics, as well as the emotional toll they were taking on the characters. The book had many positive role models, and was excellent at correctly, and respectfully, addressing each issue!

Fun details I loved:

•The MC has a quirky cat, Thimble, who is obsessed with water🐈‍⬛
•Mostly takes place in a fall and winter setting🎃☃️
•There are lots of yummy food descriptions🧁

5/5 stars (definitely check the content warnings before reading; Kara does make these very clear!)

General Description: Madison's mom leaves her after being in her life for 17 years. This leads Madison to fall behind in school, forcing a tutor to enter her life. That tutor is Liam Strom, social outcast, as deemed by Madison's friends. However, Madison shows up to tutor and discovers Liam has more going on behind the scenes than anyone was expecting. Will Madison and Liam be able to heal together, or are they too broken to put their pieces back together?

ALLL the good:
- The way the characters were written felt extremely authentic.
- This book had some major twists I didn't see coming but it kept me engaged the entire time.
- I love the progression of both Madison and Liam. It felt more realistic than I feel most YA books are.
- The raw emotions this book made me feel was something I haven't felt reading in a while!
- The friendship Madison also develops on the side (not with Liam) was beautiful

Overall: If you like YA contemporary books, this should be your next read.

Overall I would give this book a 3.75/5

It was a great read, and kept me engaged throughout the story. If you enjoy happy ending, no spice romances this should be next on your TBR. I also really appreciated that the author provided resources at the end, as there were some sensitive topics.

The character development was fantastic, not too quick or slow, with ideas given space to breathe, and lovely metaphors left and right.

Plus Thimble, the cat who loves water, and knows when someone needs a cuddle :)

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. I'm not sure if this is the author's debut novel but it's the first book of her that I've read and I certainly would like to read more from her. The book's blurb is straightforward, though do make sure and read the content warnings the author provides on her website. The Design of Goodbye, told through Madison's pov, is Liam and Madison's wonderful story about healing and finding themselves.

For as long as she could recall, Madison's dreams have been to be a designer just like her mother. Designing has been a way for Madison to feel connected to her mother but she genuinely loves creating and looks forward to the day that she can see her work on the runway. When her mother leaves, it makes Madison reconsider everything about herself and make some choices that she shouldn't - which results in her being tutored by Liam. There's a mystery and rumors surrounding him yet Madison doesn't see him in the same way that others do. The more time they spend together, the easier it is for her to like being with him. However, there are secrets that he's keeping and Madison struggles with being who she thinks she should be and whether that means Liam has a place in her life.

It's impossible not to feel for Madison's situation and the way she questions herself. While readers may love it if she acted differently, especially when dealing with her friends, you understand her actions. She had self awareness too and slowly learned from her mistakes so I really enjoyed her individual growth. I loved seeing her grow more sure of herself and not accept what didn't feel right. Her friendship with Liam helped her in that sense. Liam was kind but he was also able to speak up for himself and did his best to be honest with Madison. Readers may have a suspicion about what he's dealing with but learning his full story will definitely make you like Liam even more and want him to be happy.

Because they each have their own personal struggles and their first meeting wasn't the best, their romance is a slow burn. I liked the way their relationship shifted from one full of wariness, and a bit of dislike, to one full of understanding as they both recognized the pain each carried because of a secret. Although it was a slow burn, the pacing was perfect. Their romance is one that only includes steamy kisses, a few suggestive thoughts, and a curse word is used about twice. Aside from the romance, I liked the friendships that Madison began to develop. For those that like to know, there is a minor character who likes someone of the same sex and it's mentioned about twice but nothing descriptive. While I would've loved to see more from Madison and Liam at the end, it was fitting and a satisfying one. This book will tug on your heart strings but it's also hopeful as you feel happy that Madison and Liam found each other. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more from the author.

Read trigger warnings before indulging yourself with reading this book

I'm in love with this book! Sensitive topics are delicately explored, a proof of Kara's skillful writing. Safe to say Madison and Liam's journey had a rocky a start. They weren't enemies neither were they friends. But as, they navigate their individual struggles, sometimes separately and sometimes together, they got to learn more about each other.

Madison and Liam, including Taylor, Olive, Madison's dad and Bev were so easy to love and to relate to. The dynamics between them were beautifully written. Each one had their own story to tell. Emotions swirl and lessons are learned, crafting a whirlpool of feelings that keeps you engaged. The narrative flows seamlessly, its pacing was perfect.

The story powerfully illustrates how the people that should love and care for you, could be a poison; And, those distant to you could give you the strength to carry on and be with you as you heal. Kara definitely showed that to us through this masterpiece.

Thank you to Kara Renee for the digital arc in exchange for an honest review. Everything in this review has been written willing fully.

Since I read a proof copy of the book any grammatical errors did not impact the rating.

📚 Book Review 📚 “The Design of Goodbye” by Kara Renee

📖 upper-YA contemporary romance

✨ Check TW for this one. Won’t list them here, as the author noted they contain spoilers. But definitely check them in advance ✨

I received this ebook as an ARC in exchange for an honest review. This review and opinions are my own.

This was such a great read. It tells the story of Madison and Liam, two seniors with troubled pasts, each struggling with demons and secrets. But can they both overcome them and be happy?

This book has everything in it I love about the YA genre. It has lovable characters with CHEMISTRY. It has two characters dealing with pain and loss and trauma and struggling to be honest in a world where no one is honest. I felt for Madison’s struggles of abandonment. I felt for Liam’s anxiety and panic (no spoilers here). I never thought the heavier subjects got too dark for the targeted audience, but it is handled with care. And these characters really find themselves on the cusp of adulthood, realizing they aren’t and can’t ever be the same as before when they were kids.

There is quite a bit of banter which really worked for me and made me LOL quite a few times. Those were some of my favorite scenes. The emotional scenes worked well, as did the few twists Kara reveals as the story progresses. The main one I saw coming, but I can see many readers being surprised. And while this book did not make me cry, I can see where it will get several readers emotional. This book also focuses primarily on the romance, but it never feels like it’s overshadowing the themes at play.

The only issues I had with it was the ending felt a tad rushed. It feels like we get there too soon, and it feels like some things wrap up a bit too neatly. But that is 100% my personal taste, and not a reflection of the writing.

This is a story about choices. The ones we make and don’t make. The things we choose to share with others. And how we cope with grief. It’s also about goodbyes. The ones we speak, and the ones we don’t.

Thank you, Kara, for such a solid debut. I recommend this for fans of contemporary YA focusing heavily on the romance and heavier subjects that kids SHOULD be reading about.

This book releases on 9/1. Support indie authors!

Blurb: Five lines and twenty-six words are all it takes for Madison Winter’s life to change forever.

No one knows her mother abandoned her the summer before senior year with only a letter as a goodbye, and she’s determined to keep it that way.

Every night, Madison hides in her mother’s sewing room and focuses on the one thing she has left: designing a four-piece collection for the Harbor Fashion Show.

To make matters worse, she’s assigned high school outcast, Liam Strom, as her math tutor: a boy trying to forget the demons of his past, a boy that leaves her with more questions than answers, and a boy she can’t help but fall for.

As their relationship grows, Madison discovers Liam is harboring secrets far more serious than she realized. Desperate to not lose him, and armed with his trust, she promises to keep his secrets safe.

But what happens when she’s forced to choose between saving Liam or keeping her promise?

My thoughts: I want to start by saying thank you to Kara Renee for writing this book and giving me the opportunity to read it as an ARC reader. This book took me on an emotional roller coaster ride and I couldn’t have been happier. I’m sure this book will be something I remember for the rest of my life. I don’t usually enjoy books that are written in a mono perspective, but I devoured this book in mere hours. I cried, I laughed, I tossed my phone on my bed. When I said that it was an emotional roller coaster, I meant it. I also wanted to say that she wrote an amazing story with a brilliant plot. Madison had such character growth. I was so excited to read their emotional maturity. As soon as this beautiful book is released I am purchasing a physical copy and will be saving it for my daughter to read when she is a bit older.

Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to experience this book @kara.renee.writes

i received an arc of this a year ago when i was on tiktok, deleted tiktok, forgot i had the arc and just remembered that this book existed now. so rip, sorry for that delay on my review kara.
this story is fairly similar to lock and key by sarah dessen. there were a lot of the same themes and they unfolded similarly, though the lives of the characters looked different.
madison was struggling with the loss of her mom who’d left abruptly one night with no real explanation as to why, only that somehow madison was at fault. just after this, madison is introduced to liam who’s a mysterious outcast at their school. liam agrees to tutor madison and through that a friendship is born.
i loved seeing their friendship grow as they learned about each other. it was sweet as they became more and more protective of each other. but there were things that felt unrealistic. it felt like there needed to be more push and pull between them. conflict was always resolved TOO easily. conflicts between them never lasted more than a chapter and i just wished for more of a struggle there.
i think i also felt slightly disconnected from the characters and their struggles. i’m not totally sure why, maybe part of it was their personalities, or i just didn’t relate to them as much as i wished i did. i think they just didn’t feel real to me, which is what hooks me to this kind of story.
i will say that the fact that this took place in michigan made it a very nostalgic read for me as i’m from there. i’ve been to traverse city and could imagine the streets they drove down when they were there and it just made me miss home, and being in high school again.
overall i wouldn’t NOT recommend it, but im not sure it’s a book i would read again or that ill think about much after today.
this book did deal with some heavy content, so check triggers if you decide to read.

“I could not put it down.” is a sentence I heard not only in my head but also from multiple friends and family members, young and not so young. Is it a book for all age groups because love and romance never fade or is it simply good writing? A writing that has great language, subtle humor, and wants us to begin the next chapter just like a good binge-watching episode in a Netflix series?

Yes, to both, but that’s not all.

Can words smell? Apparently, they can since I could smell the town of Reed. It felt like I was right in it, smelling the apples and walking in a Hallmark movie for a short moment. Short, since reality, honesty and character flaws take over just like in the real world. The author is not shying away from making us not like the protagonist at first, for not standing up against bullies or not being confident when it’s brutally needed. Can’t we all relate to the sentence “I’m just me. I’m not trying to be anything.”?

For large parts, the book made me feel relaxed like “reading a book with a cup of tea and the fireplace going” kind of relaxed. As a bonus, I expanded my vocabulary, which I want to have handy when the situation asks for it:

-“Guys like me? Care to explain.”
-“We order milkshakes and fries and eat our feelings.”
-“I reminisced to when I was younger and the hardest choice I had to make was choosing between the red or purple popsicle.”

Indeed, these characters had to make much tougher choices. It’s also a book about honesty and a good inspiration to find truth and supporting relationships.

I am immensely grateful to Kara Renee for allowing me to embark on a spellbinding literary journey through "The Design of Goodbye." As a part of her ARC reader group, I had the privilege of diving into this captivating tale that left an indelible mark on my heart.

It's one thing when a parent ups and leaves without much explanation, it's a much darker place when the reason for leaving is because of your own child. I was taken on this emotional ride with Madison with feeling her mom left because of something 'believes' she did and then to hang onto a toxic friendship because of said mother...I feel everything Madison felt throughout her story! While I did not have that experience with a parent leaving, I HAD that someone I called a best friend!

I went through that kind of ordeal with someone I called a friend. I saw Madison's desperation to hold this friendship, because her best friend is essential her mother. I'm definitely focusing on this relationship because of how much I felt for Madison. It's so hard to break out of that mentality when you've been in it for so long.

This was not so easy to read, but in this case, it's a compliment to the author. With Madison's attachment challenges and Liam's mentality with an abusive parent, it's hard to not get pulled into this story. There are points where it gets a bit prolonged and moments where you roll your eyes and say out loud, "Seriously?!"

If I had to rate this, I will say 5 stars for its style of writing, the emotion behind each difficult scene, and the caring nature you get with these characters.

"You're too hard on yourself. But I understand. I'll believe in you enough for the both of us." - Liam

I absolutely devoured this book. Give me a cute high school love story with a heaping dose of family trauma and I’ll most likely read and enjoy it. This book deals with topics such as bullying, child abandonment, child abuse/neglect, loss of a parent, and peer pressure but also addresses the importance of therapy and healing.

I loved Liam is just a freaking sweetheart and honestly I have met some teen boys that have a rough life but still have a caring heart so I know this isn’t made up. I love that he’s not only gifted in math but in art as well (so often it’s just one or the other)

Madison is also just one of those girls that’s a nice, simple girl who happens to hang with the wrong crowd in hopes of gaining acceptance but also fearing the repercussions of breaking off the “friendship”. Fear and anxiety tend to hold her back from pursuing her dream but also how to come to terms with her grief and cause her to withdraw from those who love her.

Their relationship is far from perfect and there were moments I was worried if they were going to make it but I’m happy to report there is a happy ever after.

The romance is sweet and there’s nothing happening beyond kissing.

Also, Madison’s dad is the best and I wish everyone could have a dad like him.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟5 star read!
Thank you, Kara Renee, for the privilege of reading the ARC for your book The Design of Goodbye.

The main characters, Madison and Liam, made me want to hug them through the pages because of all their pain but also be their friend because of how human and complex they were. Neither is perfect but they experience so much growth, and I finished the book in one day because I wanted so much to see their growth and how their story ended.

Madison is now one of my favorite YA protagonists. She had so many layers such as the trauma from her mom leaving, the pressure to fit in, the desire to be a better person, and having hobbies/interests outside of just fashion design and hanging out with friends or the love interest. She is an excellent example of what happens to a parent when a parent leaves.

The trauma and serious topics in the book were handled with care. I really admired how the characters learned more about what trauma is as well as how to address it. T

A great book makes you think about the story, topics, and characters after the end. The Design of Goodbye accomplished just that. This story will stay with me, and I believe it will stay with other readers too.

** huge thank you to Kara for having me as an ARC reader for this book! ***

The Design of Goodbye is such a unique and important story. Both Madison and Liam have such strong characterization and growth through their respective familial and mental health challenges, and Kara did a beautiful job building their love story through it — not around it. their friendship, banter, and eventual romance was so cute and believable (the YA voice is so so strong in this book!!)

I also appreciated that the end emphasized everyone having different responses to trauma and how it was 1000% okay for Liam to take personal time to focus on healing. Beautiful message.

I only gave this 4/5 stars rather than 5/5 because this book was so dialogue heavy and there were a few times I really wish that what the dialogue was talking about had been shown instead. There’s nothing wrong with Kara’s dialogue at all, but I’m a big fan of actually experiencing moments. Even the simple stuff that got thrown in as dialogue, like Kara and her dad’s moment with the Christmas decoration at the end. Hope that makes sense!

All in all: great message, great characters (Liam🖤), great growth in the relationships, and great slow burn romance. It’s worth the read.
