The thing about monsters is, they show up when you least expect it.
I come home from a romantic weekend with my feller and found one sitting on my couch. This'un wanted me to hunt down Athena's Gorgoneion, an ancient Greek amulet, and was willing to pay dearly for the work.
Meanwhile, my friend Miss Jenny went missing; her feller Proteus, a primordial Greek god, was trapped in his house by cyclops; and a hellhole opened up out on Devil's Branch.
Trouble was brewing and brewing big.
Between the monsters and Greek gods popping up ever where I turned, I had my hands full, and I only knowed one way to deal with it: Head on and full of fight.
Celia Roman lives in the Southern Appalachians, surrounded by generations of family and myth. Her stories are inspired by a natural interest in the paranormal and too many late night reruns of Supernatural.
Come join me on a visit to Sunshine Walkingstick's world. Her devotion to family and duty makes my heart sing 🎶! Once there, we'd probably find ourselves sitting down to a nice Sunday dinner, or maybe a hot breakfast with plenty of biscuits and bacon (how cozy is that?!?? 😊) Sunshine is now gaining the notoriety necessary to keep her in work as a monster hunter (insert the word "Cryptid"), but she'll also find the odd missing item or whatnot, and this time around... it's Miss Jena that has up and disappeared! In addition to the Miss Jena conundrum, Sunshine's sox's are about blow'd off when a Cryptid shows up at her door, and just as bold as you please, asks her to find a precious family heirloom! Sunny bein' polite'n'all, invites the monster into her house and makes a pot of coffee! The money's right, the deal is struck, and Sunshine takes the case... she also sets new wards around her house! LOL!!! That would have been fine enough, but then a plethora of Greek Gods start popping up, and there's a bucket full of two headed snakes🐍 and a kraken🦑 to boot! Needless to say, Sunshine has her hands full! Although the storyline is complete (no cliffhanger here), I still felt that it was part of a larger story, and yeah, that means I really, really need the next book!
In previous books, our heroine let Henry's spirit go, while stil loving him, and she and the sheriff are on better terms. She and Riley now have a sexual relationship, almost mentioned in passing, no long detailed descriptions.
In this book Belinda is still touching/holding onto Riley's arms when they meet, and for some reason, Riley does not stop her; that job is left to Sunshine who now openly declares he is her fellow.
Belinda's watery property gets damaged, Miss Jenny is in trouble and Sunshine gets involved again with Teus (Protheus) and also other creatures from Greek mythology. There is battling, at times she is more in touch with her inner panther, she survives the fights and loses Teus' servant tattoos as a reward, only to risk later on being called for by Athene.
For some reason, Sunshine is forgetful, not opening and reading letter from her friend David, nor listening to his voicemail, until the end of the book, thus opening up for a new tale later on.
This one was actually really good! The first several were okay, but this one was the first where I actually found I enjoyed it and wanted to maybe read it again.
