Spore has a good cast of interesting characters and a well-crafted plot that takes some good turns and unfolds in a satisfying way. Each of the main and secondary characters are very distinct from one another and bring something different into the story, allowing it to develop in exciting ways along with the tensions created from the various storylines as they begin to converge.

The story does a good job with planting and payoff, which is always a good time for me. While I wouldn’t say that the plot-points are predictable, the bigger twists/surprises did make sense to me as they happened due to previous events or clues in the book that were then given more meaning and context.

The story started and finished very strong for me, only slowing up a bit in the middle as some of the tensions that I found most interesting started to resolve and others had yet to fully develop and took a bit more time to build steam and fully regrip my interest. Though once it did regather momentum, it picked right back up for me. The book does have a clear and satisfying conclusion while setting up the story, and characters, to continue on in a future novel. One which I will look forward to reading when it is available.

Spore moves fast with compelling characters and a really well thought out world build. There are some twists and turns with clever moments I was not expecting. I really appreciate that Ronald Woody has taken some fantasy tropes and flipped them in their head while still remaining true to the genre.

A great debut novel, I’m really hooked and can not wait for the rest of the series.
