The Curse Keepers #1

The Curse Keepers

Rate this book
When the keepers meet for the first time, the gate will be opened.

Two little rules have kept me safe since my mother died protecting me: always trust your instincts and forget everything about the curse.

But when I accidentally activate an ancient catastrophe I’ve spent my life running from, breaking the seal on the gates of hell and ripping the lost colony of Roanoke back through time and getting the attention of a vengeful god in the process, rules go out the window.

I can barely keep myself alive, and now somehow, it’s my responsibility to save all of humanity?

We’re screwed.

My only hope is to learn everything I can—everything I should have already known—from my fellow Curse Keeper—Collin-effing-Daily. Collin can lay on the charm when he wants to, but he’s made it clear he’s not happy I’m a novice at all of this. Unfortunately, I feel a pull to him I can’t chalk up to supernatural powers. My instincts beg me not to trust Collin, but I’m out of other options.

We have seven days to save the world, and the clock starts now.

I received The Curse Keepers in return for an honest review from the Valentine PR as part of the upcoming release.

Ellie grew up knowing one day she may have to save humanity but based on the past the odds were slim until a chance encounter with Collin another Curse Keeper sets everything in motion. Now they are on a timetable to save humanity and close the gate before it's to late and they can't stop what's been set in motion.

I liked Ellie a lot right from the start she's just a girl trying to do what she can to survive and when a chance encounter with Collin changes all of that. Collin took a little longer to grow on me but it's because he's so mysterious but he also was very frustrating. However, the more time they spend together they start forming this connection and neither one can deny the attraction to each other.

I haven't heard a lot of the Lost civilization of Roanoke except for a briefly touching on it in history and America Horror Story. I found the concept for the Curse Keerpers interesting that it's passed down from oldest child in each generation. I ended up devouring The Curse Keeper in just a couple of reading session I was invested in Ellies story and couldn't wait to see how the story would play out.

This is my first book by the author but I'm hooked D.G. Swank created a captivating adventure that kept me on the edge of my seat till the very last page. The author did a beautiful job creating a whirlwind story with just the right amount of romance. The characters are all lovely some you cheer on others you want to smack with the book. I really enjoyed the authors writing style it just flowed along so well. I'm looking forward to finishing this series and seeing what happens next. I need to check out her other series too.

Wowza!

This is my first Urban Fantasy book I’ve ever read, and I was not disappointed. I knew reading another one of D.G. Swanks books could never disappoint! I loved the action in this book, I couldn't put it down and wanted to just hide away until I could finish it. The little mystery in it caught my attention right away. I definitely would recommend!

I'm completely obsessed with this series! Ellie and Collin have captured my heart.

The sizzling love/hate chemistry between them and their witty banter had me in stitches multiple times throughout the read. The incorporation of paranormal elements into the story was spot-on, and I found myself completely engrossed in the plotline. The mystery aspect was wonderfully executed, keeping me on the edge of my seat.

What truly stands out for me is Ellie's authenticity as a character. She's refreshingly imperfect, and that's what makes her so relatable and endearing. I can't get enough of her!

And of course, there's Collin, the ultimate bad boy who I can't help but adore. 😍

Overall, this series is an absolute gem, and I can't wait to see where Ellie and Collin's journey takes them next.

It’s definitely apparent Denise put a ton of research into The Curse Keepers and I loved getting to read about some of the old legends. But I’m so glad I picked this series up after it was completed because I don’t know if I could have handled not knowing whether there would be a sequel. Ha. That ending! Denise kills me with her cliff hangers.

I continue to love Denise’s imperfect characters. Ellie is a bit narrow minded with wanting a man that’s stable and has money, which makes me love to hate her. You can already see her development as a character in just this first book and I’m looking forward to her maturing a bit. Collin is your typical jerk male lead that makes you want more. Looking forward to reading more about Ellie and Collin!

Having read the original book (and whole series) several times since it was first released almost nine years ago, I was beyond excited for this revamped, updated and republished edition. While I remembered the overall story, I had forgotten quite a few details. It was fun getting to reread and be surprised by rewritten scenes and details I had forgotten.

Denise was my first introduction into the urban/paranormal fantasy genre and this book checks all the boxes. I love that it is centered around the Lost Colony of Roanoke and Native American Mythology. Denise mixes fact and fiction seamlessly.

Eillie and Collin are both flawed, imperfect characters with make them relatable. They are written with such depth that you feel the emotions and struggles that they go through. Ellie is just starting to find herself and become the kick ass woman she was always meant to be. Collin-effing-Dailey, is the flirtatious, fun-loving bad boy that we all love to love. But he is so much more underneath that exterior and I absolutely love him.

This book and series is amazing and I recommend it to everyone! My interest was captured from the first chapter, and I couldn’t put it down.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Readers Copy of this book.

I received this ARC from Valentine PR for an honest review, all thoughts/ opinions below are my own.

I had a lil book slump, but I definitely regret not reading it any sooner because it kept me on my toes until the very end. This was my first urban fantasy and I loved it! It was a little slow paced but it’s worth it in my opinion. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series, because the ending had me shook!

I had read this book many years ago, and I was excited to try this new updated version. I also knew that I would feel a sense of déjà vu so wasn’t surprised when I did. Not only that, but I remembered how much I liked this series. Since I read so much, I didn’t remember much, but I did remember that Ellie and Collin are two halves of whole. In this series opener, they had to go through some interesting twists and turns to get to where they can stop the unleashing of Hell on earth. I adored this book, and I love Ellie and Claire’s friendship. I hate where everything ended up at the end, and since I can’t remember the next book, I’m anxious to see what’s going to happen next. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

🅼🆈 🆁🅴🆅🅸🅴🆆:

I still need a minute after that ending, that left me shocked and I'm actually right now - 😲😳.

I have to say after quite some time, I'm reading a book that's not only Paranormal Romance but Urban Fantasy and I was so swept off my feet and felt I was right there along with Ellie and Collin racing against time, trying to save all of humanity.

So we start off with Ellie going about her day as usual, working at the New Moon as a waitress but this time of the year was her favourite, as tourists flocked from all over, to see the place of the Lost Colony.

Ellie came from a family that traced back ancestry to the actual curse and how it had led to the Lost Colony. Her family was the one part, of the Curse Keepers, on whose shoulders lay the huge responsibility to close the gates of 𝗁𝖾𝗅𝗅 if ever they were opened.
But Ellie was a firm non believer in all things curse related.

When a Stranger comes into her restaurant, little did she ever imagine how everything she ever knew was going to be changed and her life tossed upside down it's axis.

Collin being the other Curse Keeper joins forces with Ellie and together they have to not only figure out how to get the gates closed again and send all the nasty creatures back but also have to find the things needed for those rituals.

So begins the exciting and adventure filled dangerous journey of secrets, finding magical relics, of customs and age old magic and the mysteries that surround the curse.

I had a blast reading this exciting journey as we figure out everything on the go along with Collin and Ellie.

I have to say I absolutely enjoyed their banter and mischievous poking each other and avoiding the hot chemistry and sparks flying between them.

Collin and Ellie took me along this magic ride with them and I was barely hanging onto the ride thinking how this would all finally culminate.

Then that ending came out of nowhere and I was like WHAT THE 😳😳😳. I'm beyond shocked and scared and nervous and yet super excited to see what happens next. Can't wait to dive into the next book. Loved loved this one.💖💖💖💖

The Curse Keepers was so well written and so well thought out that everything had a purpose in the story, everything was incorporated into the big picture at the end of the book. I love it when that happens. Plus the idea behind the book is just so cool. I have always been fascinated with the Lost Colony of Roanoke, and that is what The Curse Keepers centers around. A curse was placed on the colony all that time ago and it went wrong, sending all of the people and the colony to the spirit realm and since then, the ancestors of the two people that cast the curse are called the curse keepers. Their ability lays dormant in their family line until the two keepers meet and touch, then the legend says they have one week to "close the gate" or all hell breaks loose. Literally. Don't worry, I didn't spoil anything, you find out all of this in the first two chapters. The real story is what happens between Ellie and Collin on their quest to end the curse.

Ellie is skeptical of all this curse business, and frankly, I don't blame her. It is something that is kind of hard to believe. But Collin shows up and he eventually makes a believer out of her. But Ellie doesn't make it easy on Collin. She is kicking and screaming and being stubborn the whole way. I have to say, I loved that about her. Almost as much as I loved watching the progression between her and Collin. If you hate insta-love, this is the book for you. The romance is slow and develops so naturally. It was great to watch it unfold. And both Ellie and Collin were so hesitant even though you could see the chemistry between the two of them jumping off the page. And then Collin kept warning her away from him. But you could tell that they were both going to eventually give in, and I was cheering them on. Rooting for it to happen sooner.

I had inklings of what the ending might be, but I was still surprised when it finally happened. I didn't quite guess what it was going to be, but I was sad about it nonetheless. I am so happy that this is a series because while it wasn't necessarily a cliff-hanger ending, there is still so much that can happen. I loved that the story centers around the mystery of Roanoke. Denise Grover Swank just made my must read author list. The Curse Keepers is a great first book to what looks like is going to be an AWESOME series.

Very cool take on the Lost Colony of Roanoke

The Lost Colony has always fascinated me so I was very excited to read this book.

While the book contains some factual information (the names of Gods and last names made famous by the lost colony), the wonderful DG Swank brewed up and added her urban fantasy deliciousness and The Curse Keepers series was born.

Our MCs and Curse Keepers, Ellie and Collin are descendants of the original patriarchs that created and performed the original curse to lock up the Gods worshipped by the Native American Tribes. But by doing so, they locked up their own and more. Sending them all to hell. Each family, for 400 years, has passed down what it means to be Curse Keeper and the rituals that are required to protect themselves from spirits and close the gates of hell.

Ellie is a great FMC. She’s funny, strong, not afraid to show her fear but continues any task at hand. She hates it when she cries but the crying is warranted with what our girl goes through in just one week. Collin is a player and makes no apologies for it and has disdain for Ellie when he finds out she locked away her knowledge of her side of the Curse and chose not to listen to her father when he tried to teach her again.

Now that the Curse has been broken, Ellie and Collin (oil and water) need to be in each other’s company until they have all things necessary to complete the curse again. They have 7 days to complete the curse to close the gates. If they fail, every creature in hell will be released on earth.

Mark out some time, get comfy and enjoy!!

I really loved this book so much! I love that this book is based on true events with a fantasy twist! And so many secrets 💜💜💜

Ellie and Collin are tasked with keeping the world safe as they are both descendants of the original families that created the curse to protect humanity.

Ellie, truth be told, I wasn't a fan of her for the first maybe 20% of the book. I kind of think she was in such denial about what was happening around her, which kind of annoyed me a lot. My opinion did change, though. By the end, I was a massive fan of Ellie. Throughout this whole book, it's obvious she wants to protect the ones she loves. I can't wait for Ellie to truly come into her own in the next book.

Collin, yes, he is beautiful and handsome, but he has so many secrets. It's pretty plain to see he did care for Ellie to some degree from the very beginning, even though he was the biggest jerk to her. I did feel for him because his secrets were ruining him, and when he and Ellie finally fell into each other, it was evident that he really did care for her. But then he goes and messes it up, and I don't know if Ellie will ever be able to forgive him... He has a lot to answer for.

The one critique or wish is that i would have loved for it to be in dual POV, only so i can understand Collin's thought process.

I can't wait for book 2! Add to your tbr immediately!!

Thank you so much to DG and the wonderful team at Valentine's PR for giving me the opportunity to ARC read. I really appreciate it. All my opinions are honest and my own 🙂

Not a bad start to a series. This is definitely more for YA readers, and I truly mean young readers.

This definitely took some time for me to get into for various reasons - the characters I struggled to connect with. The Native American folklore and the actual plot was what kept me going.

Ellie has always struggled with her belief in this curse for her own reasons, so I can understand her hesitancy to just suddenly go all-in on it. I did struggle with her mannerisms and reactions for her age.

Collin - not going to lie, I did not really care for him. He's a chauvinistic prick. But I also think that the author didn't want him to be this lovable, sweet companion. She nailed his personality.

Overall, it's a decent read and a nice start to the series. I definitely believe that younger readers will enjoy this more than adult readers who like YA.

This was an awesome read! I love me some urban fantasy, and once I started really started reading it, I couldn’t put it down. While the author could have gone the popular route and done an urban fantasy novel with Greek mythology or something with vampires and/or werewolves, I love that she turned to Native American gods and spirits instead. I’ve never read a book based on it, and I’d never heard of the Lost Colony of Roanoke, so it was definitely something new and interesting! There was a good balance of supernatural and romance, and both of the main characters were written well. I can’t wait to start the next book!

I rarely read author’s notes in the beginning, but I absolutely LOVED this one. It made me want to read it even more! I love the author wanting to find truths in history to expand on in this fantasy novel. Plus… Roanoke? Say less. Sign me up. Reading this during spooky season only enhanced the vibes. I was hooked from the first chapter and found her writing to be so easy and well paced.

TCK was my introduction to UF/Fantasy! I remember being seriously intimidated by it but once you get into it it’s impossible to stop! It is very modernized and you don’t have to suffer through a lot of creative world building.
If you’re looking for an intro to fantasy this is the book for you. Has a little bit of spice but I wouldn’t consider it “smut” at all. I love everything about this story and I’m so glad to see them back and better than ever with new covers! Can’t wait to get a physical copy!!

The Curse Keepers is the first book in a semi-historical paranormal series by D.G. Swank based upon the lost Roanoke Colony. I found it took me quite a while to digest all the real and invented Native legends around their gods and the disappearance of the lost colony. But once I had it was a riveting story.
Our heroine Ellie Dare-Lancaster is the latest in a long line of Curse Keepers from the colonist side. Part of the legend is that if a curse keeper tells the legend to a non-family member bad things will happen. Ananaise Dare was the colonist from the Roanoke Colony who with the Native American Manitou created the curse which sent many of the gods and spirits into Hell. The curse was intended by her ancestor to keep the evil spirits of more warlike tribes from wreaking havoc upon Manitou’s tribe and the colonists. The Curse Keepers job is to make certain the gate keeping the spirits from our world is never opened and if it is to close it within seven days preventing the spirits and gods from getting out into the world. Ironically the curse keeping the spirits in the nether world can only be ended if the current curse keepers, one a descendent of Dare and the other a descendent of Manitou meet and touch. When her mother is murdered shortly after then eight-year-old Ellie shared the legend with her BFF, Ellie is overcome with guilt which causes her to create a mental block preventing her from remembering everything her father (also a curse keeper) taught her about the curse and her responsibilities as a curse keeper and she refused any further attempts by her father to impart her role and responsibilities to her. . She stubbornly convinces herself that the curse isn’t real. Her obstinate refusal to accept the reality of the curse reaches a ridiculous level when at 23 years old after she meets Collin Dailey her Native American counterpart curse keeper her near violent reaction to his presence is everything her father told her it would be. When they meet and touch the curse breaks tearing the veil between the two worlds and things begin to happen. Even after she’s visited one night by two spirits representing the two major gods she still tries to deny the curse is real. It isn’t until the vestiges of the Lost Roanoke Colony reappear after 400 years that Ellie finally accepts that the curse is in fact real and she and Collin have lifted it. Unfortunately, Ellie’s father is suffering from early onset dementia so he can no longer serve as a resource to help Ellie know what she needs to do to close the gates to the world. Almost equally as bad, since Ellie didn’t believe in the curse she pawned the artifact that she needs to play her part in closing the gate.
Collin Daily the Native American Curse Keeper who has been raised with the knowledge and reverence for his role as Curse Keeper having no knowledge of Ellie’s history or personal situation and harboring a prejudice towards non-Native Americans is furious with her for her refusal to acknowledge the Curse is real, her lack of knowledge about her role in closing the gate and the fact that she pawned off the necessary artifact. Because Curse Keepers share a powerful sexual chemistry early on his feelings towards Ellie are all over the place. Collin is devastatingly handsome and has a very questionable moral compass. Even after Ellie agrees to work with him to close the gate she doesn’t trust him. And from the way getting any information from him is like pulling teeth, he doesn’t trust her either. Honestly Collin causes Ellie as much trouble unintentionally as he does to help her in this story. Through Collin Ellie meets Marino a powerful crime lord who takes an unhealthy obsession with her. Now Ellie must not only dodge vengeful gods and spirits but a crime boss’s thugs.
Eventually as they are forced to work together they start to reveal each other’s stories. Added to the sexual pull between them and they can’t help but become lovers. Ellie is convinced Collin is not the self-absorbed selfish player she first thought him to be. But at the close of this story Collin does something to betray her trust leaving Ellie heartbroken.
This was a really riveting story with plenty of twists and turns and burning up the sheets sex. I can’t wait to start the second book in the series.

Let's delve a bit deeper into "The Curse Keepers" by D.G. Swank.

First things first, I absolutely loved this book. I had the pleasure of receiving it in return for an honest review from Valentine PR as part of an upcoming release, and it was a fantastic introduction to D.G. Swank's writing.

"The Curse Keepers" is the first instalment in a series that weaves a captivating narrative around the Lost Colony of Roanoke and Native American Mythology. It's clear that Denise has put extensive research into creating this story, blending historical facts and fiction seamlessly. I found this unique approach to storytelling to be refreshingly original.

The novel introduces us to Ellie and Collin, our main characters and Curse Keepers. They are descendants of the original patriarchs who initiated a powerful curse to lock up the gods worshiped by the Native American tribes. However, in doing so, they inadvertently trapped themselves and much more. Their families, for over 400 years, have passed down the duties of being Curse Keepers, along with the rituals required to protect themselves from vengeful spirits and to prevent the gates of hell from opening.

Ellie and Collin are beautifully crafted characters, each with their own set of flaws and imperfections. It's these imperfections that make them relatable and draw readers into their struggles and trust issues. Ellie, in particular, is on a journey of self-discovery, evolving into the strong and independent woman she was destined to become. Collin, on the other hand, might come across as the flirtatious bad boy, but there's more depth to his character waiting to be uncovered.

While I found the beginning of the book a bit slow, I quickly realized that this deliberate pacing was necessary to lay the foundation for this intricate narrative. It allowed the story to build gradually and made the subsequent developments all the more impactful.

I must confess, my prediction about the ending was quite accurate (no spoilers here), and even though I was satisfied with being right, I also felt a tinge of surprise. The cliff-hanger ending left me eagerly awaiting the next book, which is already loaded on my Kindle.

In summary, "The Curse Keepers" is a fantastic read that I wholeheartedly recommend. It offers a unique blend of history, mythology, and well-developed characters that will keep you hooked from beginning to end. Do yourself a favor and dive into this book; you won't regret it.

Let me start by saying that this book had such a wonderfully original idea and draw that it captured my imagination in the most compelling way just from the book’s blurb. I had never read anything by this author before, so I knew nothing about her or her style. For me this means looking at what I call my Big Draw Three.

#1 Does the title capture my attention and engage my imagination? Well, with a title of “The Curse Keepers" my mind is already spinning with a ton of questions and ideas. So, okay I’m in. ✅

#2 What’s the First Line? For me this is the most important part of a book. Here’s where the author talks directly to me. No editors, reviewers, or market researchers. This is just me and the author…one on one… their voice in my ear and mind. So, when I get “The moment I laid eyes on him, I knew he was trouble.” No exclamation point, no false promises, just the sound of the main character giving me the voice that implies ‘and then…..”. So, yes I want to know more ✅

#3 What’s the Last Line? This is especially true for a series because I want to see what the Cliffhanger is. Did the tone of the book hold true? Did the voice of the character stay strong? If I’m going to invest days reading, will I want to follow along in book two or three. So, without any spoilers, is that strength there? I found this “I stopped and looked over my shoulder. ‘I’m going to do what my father raised me to do. I’m going to save the world.’’ DUHH, YES I”M IN FOR BOOK TWO ✅

Okay, right now I know you are thinking “Okay Red, that’s great but what about the other 375 pages? These three things are there, but it’s not much about the book.”

In a phrase this book is everything that I look for in a good modern fantasy. I had a story that drew in my world. I had a story with a basis on Native American Mythology and folklore, a FMC that I bonded with immediately and who felt like someone I know in real life, there was a wonderful tension to the story that I know will hold across all three books and an electric sizzle between the leads that is just too good for words. I am a third of way into a wonderfully crafted Hero’s Journey and I can’t wait for my Kindle to finish downloading Book Two - Curse Breakers - to see where I will go next.

ADVICE & CAUTION: Fully charge whatever device, or bring your charger when you read! My Kindle powered down in the middle of a chapter 😱 and I was left staring in shock at a black screen until I got home. 😜

We have the brand new edition of this book in front of us, and not having read the first version I don't know what exactly has changed, but I can tell you that it is a nice urban fantasy with enemies-to-lovers and new adult vibes.

The first thing that struck me from the plot is that between the pages we have the opportunity to come into contact with the mysterious Roanoke Colony: one of the first settlements in North America and famous for the mass disappearance of almost all its inhabitants. Obviously, the author puts a lot of effort into adapting the story to her book, creating something very intriguing.

We have two main characters with strong personalities, two descendants of families who had created a curse to keep humanity safe by blocking the Gods worshiped by Native Americans. They are also two very particular people, and this will take the reader in very different directions, who will love them, who will hate them and who will both. In my case I can say that the story is structured in such a way that at the beginning I didn't like them too much, but then you get to know them better, to understand them more, and this led me to change my mind.

However, the reading is very smooth, and we thank the no-frills language, a good alternation of vicissitudes, many action scenes and some scenes that are a little more spicy but without being vulgar. I particularly appreciated the choice to use Native American mythology, as well as having characters who can trigger very strong reactions in the reader. Maybe I only have two things to say: I would have preferred the book to be from both Ellie's and Collin's points of view, so I could hear the thoughts of both and not just one, and maybe even the final plot-twist isn't that bad. surprising, but it makes you read and still makes you curious to read the second one.

Holy fudge!!

I really enjoyed this book! The pacing was fast, but I kinda liked that! Gave it a sense of urgency!

I really love that it was based off of the Roanoke colony! And has Native American spirits. This is actually the first book I've seen thats about the colony! There's probably others, but I haven't heard of them. But I have been interested in the story for a while now and I'm glad to have had a change to read this book. And I loved learning more about the different gods and spirits. It was just so cool!

The FMC I will admit was a bit annoying in the beginning, but she did get better nearing the middle of the book. She's so sassy! And I loved it! A bit after the middle of the book we find out more about her and I will say that this info gets repeat over and over again. It's not a bad thing, I just thought it was funny.

The MMC was a cocky dude and I loved him! I didn't like that he was such an ass sometimes tho. And how he treated Ellie at times, but I think that was the whole point of his character.

But dude the banter!! Omg the banter was amazing!! I was all here for it! I was literally highlighting every convo between these two!! I really really fecking loved the chemistry between Ellie and Collin!! Like damn dude you can feel that coming from off the page. (In my case a screen.😝)

And that ending!! Holy fudge!! I did guess some of what happened coming, at about the 60-75% mark, but some I did not and it thrown me!! Omg I can't wait to read the second book! I need to know what happens!! I need it!!

I highly highly recommend this book to anyone who loves paranormal romance, back and forth banter, Native American spirits and Gods, The Roanoke colony. And to anyone who wants to read it!! Do it!

Ellie Lancaster and Collin Dailey are Curse Keepers. They are the current generation of Keepers and unfortunately for them, the curse has been broken. They now must work together to stop both vengeful gods and demons from wreaking havoc on humanity.⁣

I really liked the author's paranormal twist on the disappearance of the people of Roanoke. I also like that instead of making it far-fetched with the paranormal, she wove in certain aspects that had a grain of truth to them. Many speculate that the Roanoke colony disbanded and went on to live with other peaceful Native American tribes; Swank revolves her curse around Native American lore and legends, all with ties to the Croatoan tribe. ⁣

I really liked all of the characters, Ellie being one of my favorites. One aspect of Ellie that I liked was her difficulty with the curse. She was taught from a young age the importance of being a Keeper. Something happened to her and because of that, the details are fuzzy. This throws a serious wrench in things - Collin is the Keeper for the Manteo side, Ellie the Dare side. Collin only knows so much about the Dare side of the equation, as neither side was really privy to all of the opposing sides' details. He certainly isn't much help as far as guiding Ellie and telling her what to do. Those parts were interesting, I kept wondering how in the heck Ellie was going to pull her weight and keep the apocalypse from happening when she can't even remember the basic, but important, words of protection. ⁣

Definitely pick this one up if you’re looking for a paranormal twist on an old, familiar legend. 4 stars. ⁣

I am full of rage most of the time that I read the book, imagine, this is book one of a trilogy.

First, the meeting. I think that it looks so exagerated. I know that they are connected to each other and legends says that once two keeprs meets or in close proximity they will know and they will feel, bu, darn, its not to the point that they will haveshortness of breathe or having chest pain like a heart attack. Dude! That was messed up! I will go straight to the hospital and not to locked eyes with each other.

Second, Iam so piss to the FMC. Almost half of the book she was like, “I don’t need you.” “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” “You’re crazy.” Like, bro, the whole world is going to end then you are still the skeptic little bitch!? Come on. You are so bitchy that you won’t need help treiving your pawn item that so important, it’s the only item needs to close the hell gate? And to think that you only need 7 days to close it, you will say, I need to go to work! Screw the work if after 7 days the world is full of bad spirits and monsters, you won’t survive it girl! I can’t express how annoyed I was reading the book with this type of dumb FMC.

Next, the hold up. The push an pull type of action is soooo bad it makes me go curse at the two MC’s. The girl wants answers, technically the guy knows everything about the myth and legends of their families, why not fill her up some improtant information so she will not act up so bitchy to you! Bro, she is skeptic already, why not give her some slack! The push and pull is not a good idea. “I need you because we needs to close the gate together.” “I can get the cup by myself, that is my cup to begin with.” So annoying..

At the end, its too late to close the gate and. the four Gods and Monsters were free roaming on the Earth, its because of this too idiots.

I DNF the other 2 books.. You’re welcome.

First off, thank you to ValentinePR and DG Swank for gifting me an ARC for an honest review in return! 🖤

I’m still pretty new to Urban Fantasy and didn’t really know what to expect going into this book but when I say I am absolutely HOOKED. I started a bit slow because I wasn’t sure where things were going but once the story started to pick up pace I literally said out loud “this is going to be amazing.” In my opinion, I think going into this book pretty blind is the way to go, so I’m going to keep my review pretty short/vague!

Right from the beginning, Ellie and Collin are an absolutely rollercoaster ride. I love both of their characters for their snarky exteriors yet mushy insides. They are both so headstrong and multiple times they made me laugh out loud. And not only are they a rollercoaster, but this plot will have you feeling a rollercoaster of ALL the emotions. Not to mention the premise of this story and the history is pretty new to me and SO fascinating! I was reading on the edge of my seat, crying with the characters, yelling at some of them, and pretty much freaking out because the story just got too good UGHH😫

I think this was such a good first installment to a new urban fantasy series filled with hidden powers, characters with secrets, bittersweet moments, and undeniable chemistry. I cannot wait to read the next book and see what kind of journey the author takes us, Ellie, and Collin on next! ✨

5 Star Urban Fantasy Romance

This is the first book in the series and it has all my favs— a female protagonist who steps up to save humanity, a super sexy & infuriating hero, enemies with magnetic attraction, sexual tension, ghosts, danger, demons, evil and angelic gods, unknown magical powers, a bad boy, a good girl, and curses.

The main character, Ellie Lancaster, knows she’s a Curse Keeper, but has avoided anything and everything to do with the tradition since her mother’s death. Hunky, bad boy Collin Dailey, (her unknown soul mate) has been waiting his entire life for the curse to break so he can fulfill his duty as a Curse Keeper. It’s their encounter that causes the Lost Colony of Roanoke to reappear and the fury behind the gates of hell to be unleashed. With demons roaming the earth, Ellie and Collin have seven days to work together to close the gates of hell.

Sexy, Collin Dailey made me swoon. I wanted to hate him but like Ellie, I couldn’t. Ellie is relatable and determined to do what she has to do to fulfill her role as a Curse Keeper. The way Swank ties in the history of Roanoke, NC, and Native American folklore makes the story all the more compelling.

Swank is a talented writer and you can always count on the unpredictable in her novels. This book kept me guessing with every page turn. And the ending…omg, I did NOT see it coming.

Overall, I enjoyed this read. The cover totally caught me initially, beautifully done, and later the story drew me in as well. It took a little bit for me to get into the story. I had mixed feelings about both the MMC and FMC. Their actions, separately, just didn't make sense the first third of the book. The FMC was living in an almost constant state of denial, despite obvious evidence and an extremely important responsibility. I understood the denial in the beginning, it comes with the shock of the plot, but then she STAYED IN DENIAL for much longer than necessary and it was honestly annoying in some scenes. Made me want to shake her, and tell her to put her big girl panties on. The MMC was an absolute jerk, which he does recover from eventually, and I didn't find it in the "he's sexy and brooding" kind of jerk. He reminded me of a preppy high school douche bag. Both characters do some maturing, which is a win for the author that she was able to give her characters that kind of development, and after that point I began to love them more.

The story was fairly fasted paced, had lots of action, was based in some Native American mythology (which I haven't seen too many times so points for originality and representation), and contained some very well written and classy spicy scenes. This book is firmly in the new-adult romance range, no where near erotica in it's content.

I did see the "plot twist" coming from about 100 miles away, but that didn't stop it from being entertaining. I look forward to the second book.
