I've read a lot of books about adventures in Alaska so some of the tales in this book (each by a different author) were familiar i.e. encounters with grizzlies, bush plane crashes and fishing and hunting stories. What I really appreciated was the variety of stories related here that weren't "typical". One of my favorites involved the grip of basketball on the populations of remote native Alaskan villages. Another tale depicted the filming of a Hollywood movie deep in a remote wilderness area in the 1930's. Yet another was composed by former Alaska governor Jay Hammond and suffice it to say that Sarah Palin wasn't the only quirky, tough politician who accomplished a lot in the state by practical and/or unusual means. The stories in this book were written by some of the most accomplished outdoor writers in the business and I recommend it highly if you want to experience the variety and uniqueness that is Alaska.

I picked up this book in a wonderful used book shop while passing through Kenai AK. Like most books with a compilation of stories from different authors, some resonated with me and some didn't.
