The last place Kate Porter ever thought she’d end up was in a car with her boss, driving down the Oregon Coast. He’s handsome and knows it, socially charming to a fault, and just took the job she felt was rightfully hers out from under her.
Luca Banks thought he’d broken through Kate’s cool exterior, but when he’s promoted to company president (thank you, Grandpa!), Kate goes from subtly aloof to being a downright grump. The polar opposite of Luca’s fun-loving ways, Kate has never really taken him seriously. Now Luca is determined to prove to her and to himself that he has what it takes to lead the company.
Throw in becoming stranded with a broken-down car, one bed, and karaoke, keeping things simple and professional isn’t really an option. If the office betting pool is any indication, they’re either going to fall in love or end up in jail.
That One Time in Oregon is a reverse grumpy/sunshine, closed door, clean and sweet romance with witty banter, forced proximity, and coworkers-to-lovers who fall in love while on an adventure they’ll never forget.

I loved the first book in the series (That One Time in Hawaii) so of course I had to read this one! A lifelong Oregonian, I've done the same road trip along the Oregon Coast as Kate and Luca. I loved how accurate the book was to the Oregon Coast, and it made me excited for my next trip! What a sweet romance!
📖Kate and Luca are coworkers at the company that Luca's grandfather owns. When the management is rearranged Luca ends up taking the position that Kate felt like she deserved. When she ends up working as the vice president to his president position she doesn't think anything could get worse. Surprise, dear old grandpa CEO decides to send Kate and Luca down the coast to try and gather more customers and find new charitable opportunities. As Kate and Luca travel together all of a sudden hard feelings are confronted, hilarious mishaps happen, and walls around their hearts are broken down. But can they really fall in love seeing as they work with each other and both have issues they need to grow and heal from?
✍️ Reading this book felt so immersive. I love the author's ability to describe locations, food they eat, and the scenery. I felt like I was there, my mouth was salivating from the food references AND my heart was melting as Luca and Kate fell in love. I love Kate but the star of the show really was Luca. He had so much character growth in this book and Loved seeing who he is on the inside after getting glimpsed of him from Book 1 in this series. One of the other major things I loved was the group chats and group face times Kate had with Natalie and Jill. It was fun for Natalie and Joel to cameo on this book (they're the couple in book 1) and they really brought the fun and funny into things. Kate was awesome as I knew she would be. I also loved her softening towards Luca and seeing her heart. Not to mention shes a boss at her job and is such a wise woman. Oooo all the side characters! They gave great advice and really leveled up this story! Keep your eye out for Gus's marriage advice y'all, it's 15/10 do recommend following it! Basically all the characters had great depth, growth, and fun experiences and I loved them all.
💋 The romance on this book was on point! This is a sweet and clean book. All things stop at kissing (make-outs) and although they share a bed due to different circumstances no hanky panky takes place and they're respectful of each other. One instance of Kate checking Luca out when she accidentally walks in on him in his boxers. He puts clothes on before the story resumes. It is a very tame scene and it did not make me uncomfortable in any way although Luca did tease her for checking him out.
⚠️ grief from loss of a family member. Mother who is mentally struggling and using (what I call unhealthy) coping mechanism, a bit of family enmeshment
Thank you to the author for having me be a part of your advanced reader team. All thoughts, feelings, excitement etc are honest and my own.
That One Time in Oregon is the second book in That One Time series. I had not personally read the previous book in the series and found that I still was able to enjoy this one just fine as a standalone. I did really enjoy the interactions between the couple from book one in this book, so I'll definitely be looking forward to going back and reading that one too!
I've never been to Oregon or had desires to drive along the Oregon coast... but boy did they book inspire me to want to do so! The author did such a great job of creating this beautiful setting that I couldn't help but want to experience for myself! While the setting certainly made this book all that much better, it was definitely the romance that grabbed me. Right from the start, Luca's character drew me in. He is the sunshine to Kate's slight grumpiness... and truly what a sunshine he was! He was so full of life and fun; it was hard not to be drawn into his character. While at the start of the story, he seemed like he might be more surface level, I really loved getting to know him better as the story progressed. They balanced each other very well, and the chemistry was fantastically done.
Music played a big part of this story, what with Luca's karaoke obsession and playlists. I'm a big music person myself, so I loved all the specific song mentions (and that we're given a full playlist at the end). I felt like that really adds another great layer of connection to the story that I appreciated.
If you love a good coworker romance, this is certainly one not to be missed.
That One Time in Oregon is a closed-door romance with nothing beyond kisses and no language.
**I received an ARC for consideration. All opinions are my own.
Summer is over, and it is officially fall. But if you're still in need of a getaway, may I recommend joining Kate and Luca for an incredible road trip along the Oregon coast? Reading That One Time in Oregon truly felt like the perfect vacation. The music, scenery, food, sights, and smells combined to make a complete sensory experience and really made me feel like I was there. And I haven't even started talking about the romance! If you are a fan of grumpy/sunshine, forced proximity, text threads, one bed, hand holding, or swoony kisses, you will love Kate and Luca's story! Watching these two grow closer together was so much fun and gave me all the feels. I read this several weeks ago, but just looking over my highlights to write this review made me fall in love with these two all over again! Kate and Luca complement each other perfectly, and I absolutely adored their journey together. Add this charming story to your TBR today!
2.5 rounded up. The main characters were nice and I really liked the almost travelogue style of parts of the book. However, I was never really invested in the story and kind of skimmed the last 20% or so.
In this workplace roadtrip romance, Kate’s goal was to get Luca fired so she could have the job that was rightfully hers. With so much proximity, they can’t help but fall in love.
I’ve experienced so much joy reading Ella’s writing this year, culminating with this great little series. Ella writes funny, light reads with the depth of contemporary romance. Every moment in her writing is underlined with feeling. Sometimes big. Sometimes small. The prose gently propels from one moment to the next. The pacing is spot on.
The That One Time series is full of coastal vacation vibes in San Diego, Oahu, and the rugged Oregon Coast. The writing immerses you in good food and beautiful scenery. All the things you want from a great rom-com are included—nicknames, classic tropes, magnetic chemistry, witty banter, and heart-to-heart moments.
While you are enjoying Ella’s books, be sure to read her most recent releases Painting the Corners, and Have Yourself a Maui Little Christmas (coming in November 2025).
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Luca. And Kate's aversion to him is pretty awesome too.
This is such a delightful romantic comedy. It serves up a perfect blend of humor, wit, and heartfelt moments. And to make it even better it's set against the backdrop of a quirky road trip down the Oregon Coast. Kate and Luca aren't exactly enemies but they aren't friends either, much to Luca's dismay. I think the best description for their relationship is "competitive office rivals".
Kate finds herself reluctantly paired with Luca, her charming and recently promoted boss. Their dynamic is electric from the start, with witty banter and (not so) subtle competition simmering beneath the surface.
Luca's determination to prove himself in his new role, even while being his fun-loving self, creates an interesting contrast. As they navigate the challenges of their road trip, the chemistry between them crackles with tension and humor, keeping you engaged from start to finish.
The forced proximity trope is so well done. And the familial relationships gave me an entirely different perspective of Luca and his life choices. I loved reading about his past and to see him open up to Kate about it was .. *chef's kiss*. This read is engaging and accessible, making it easy to connect with the characters and become immersed in their journey.
In fact, I loved this book so much I'm definitely considering planning a trip to follow their route down the coast next summer. If nothing else we'll make a stop at a highlight or two.
Thank you so much Ella Beachley for the advanced copy. It was SO fun to read!
Okay, so this beautiful backdrop made me want to explore the Oregon coast!! It sounds magical.
Now onto the actual book.
Luca is the outgoing, sweet, popular guy who has all of the girls interested, and who is hiding his depth and some brokenness under his flirty exterior. We know the trope. We love the trope. It’s one of my favorite character tropes. But Luca. He is so caring, he sees so much, he loves people around him so well, and the way I can tell you, I love him so much. He deserves the world, the lovable flirty goofball.
Kate is our “grump”. She’s very serious and very angry that she lost out on the presidency of the company to Luca (nepotism 🤷🏻♀️). She’s got a cool background because you would assume she’s serious and strong because of the corporate world she’s in? But she’s from a farm! She has walls up for a reason! She isn’t grumpy for no reason!
Add in the way he weasels into her heart, his kindness, his “golden retriever energy”, his charm, and the beautiful backdrop… and she doesn’t stand a chance. Not to mention all he is looking for is a genuine friend who doesn’t care about his money, his family problems, and he really doesn’t stand a chance with Kate who will cheerlead him, while also not pulling any punches, to success. They’re dynamic is so fun.
Also, only one bed… Dual point of view! A haunted lighthouse 🤭 One HAMMOCK.
Wow. So much fun stuff in this story! Grumpy-Sunshine. Karaoke bar🎤 Road trip. Fall Vibes 🍂 Workplace romance. One bed. Dual POV. Nicknames 😍 Forced proximity. Therapy positive. Text threads. Meddling friends. Flirty and fun hero (my absolute fav) Lighthouse moments 😏 Hammock snuggles. Romantic gestures. No third act break up 🙌🏻 Book playlist in the back of the book (and Spotify I believe) Ugh. So so sweet and so so swoony friends! I love how Kate supports Luca. I love their playfulness. They are the perfect match for each. Totally Ship worthy. Highly recommend THAT ONE TIME IN OREGON 🥰
💕Romantic Content: 2-3 (brief to heavier kissing)
🗨Some Quotes: If there was ever a day I was going to end up in jail, today was that day.
"What if what I want is you?” He frames my face with his hands. His eyes trail from my mouth to my eyes. “Then I guess we’re dating.” I lean in until our lips are so close I feel the vibration of his with each exhale. “Because, Luca Banks, I’m going to choose you. Every time.” Luca’s lips crush against mine. He chooses me. I choose him. There is something in the simplicity of that idea that sets my soul on fire. He looks past his lavish life and picks me, needs me, wants me.
Another absolutely fantastic read from Ella Beachley!
Luca & Kate were so much fun, I mean who doesn’t love a good enemies to lovers story??
Luca gives this air of unwavering confidence almost to the point of unbridled cockiness but there’s so much more to him. He’s got depth and heart and as the story unfolds you see that he’s always been watching Kate (not in a creepy way 🤪)
And Kate knows how to put him in his place, how to make him earn things instead of just expect them, and how have his back.
I loved their dynamic and the way he fell hard and fast! And let me tell you- there is more than one romantic gesture in his part but when he sings a karaoke song to her in front a packed restaurant….prepare to swoon! 😍😍
That One Time In Oregon is fun and fast paced, you’ll laugh out loud and you will fall in love with Luca & Kate! It also as a fall vibe to it so add this to your September/October TBR!
📖 Thank you to the author for the advanced copy of this book, all opinions are my own.
Favorite Quote: “But then, little by little over the past few days, Kate wove her way into my heart without even trying. But the way she sees through my façade and stands up to me instead of kissing up to me . . . it intrigues me.”
Who doesn’t love a good enemies to lovers road trip?? Kate and Luca were so cute! I loved their banter and the dynamic between the 2 of them.
I loved the setting of this book! All the stops they made along the way, make me want to travel to the Oregon coast some day!
I enjoyed seeing Joel and Natalie continuing their relationship after their book! 😍 and I’m hoping after that epilogue, we get to see Jill’s HEA soon too! 😉

Thank you to the author for the early copy. All thoughts are my own.
This story was the perfect mix of fun moments & swoon worthy moments!! I particularly love how Ella writes the funnest characters as well as her attention to setting! If you're looking for a workplace romance, look no further! Actually it's workplace romance meets roadtrip romance, which makes it even better! You WILL be rooting for Kate and Luca 🥰
This was a super darling road trip book that nailed the one-bed trope while still keeping it clean. I wasn’t too sure about Luca at first, but he definitely won me over. I loved the rivals tension between the leads and found it so satisfying when they slowly started to open up to each other as their walls came down. The author does a fantastic job of making her characters real and relatable, as well as making the setting a secondary, well-loved character. Would definitely recommend!
This book has everything you’re looking for in a fun filled romcom! It’s a fast, easy read that leaves you feeling joyful and filled up with warmth.
I couldn’t put it down. It made me laugh so much. The characters had so much spice and were so relatable. It just gave me all the warm fuzzies. It also made me want to eat fish tacos, listen to cold play, and relax in a hammok.
I absolutely loved this book. Born & raised in Oregon, I knew exactly where everything was taken place. I loved Luca's personality & it was such a fun story to read!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Luca Banks & Kate Porter - Coworkers to friends to lovers - Workplace romance - Set in Oregon - Dual POV - sunshine MMC & grump FMC - Forced proximity - Work trip down 101 in Oregon Coast - He falls first - One bed trope - So many songs!! The book comes with its own playlist 😍 - He pushes her out of her comfort zone - She brings him back down to earth - They calm each other and make a each other feel safe 🥹 - The sweetest grandma
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Book 2 in That One Time Series - Okay, this is one of my new favorite books. Not only do I get to relive my favorite spots along the Oregon coast, but the MCs compliment each other so well. They are both sassy and witty. They banter back and forth and keep each other on their toes. They see each other. They see where the other one needs pushing and they push. They see when the other needs a pick me up or encouragement and they make sure that their person feels seen.
I absolutely love 2/3 through the book we get to see a conflict that doesn’t end in a breakup but the couple works through it in a healthy way. There is a true compromise where both parties get a say and get their feelings heard. 👏🏻 WE 👏🏻 LOVE 👏🏻 TO 👏🏻 SEE 👏🏻 HEALTHY 👏🏻 COMMUNICATION 👏🏻 more of this please authors.
I get problems propel stories and that we all have problems (trust me. I have problems a plenty), but I love when I see to see healthy communication. I love reading couples who are solely invested and when something hard happens, they prove that they aren’t all talk. We need more examples of how to stick through and work through hard. This book does that!!!
🥹 I loved getting more Joel & Red. I didn’t think they could get cuter but they did 😭
Oh my gosh I need Jill to get her happy ending. In the epilogue, it hints she does but I NEED TO READ IT 🤭 also 🥹 that epilogue was so cute I could die. 💕 I love Luca & Kate together 😭
Side note: I didn’t do songs for this book because Ella made her own playlist throughout the book & it’s perfect for these two 💕
If you love forced proximity, reverse grumpy/sunshine, coworkers-to-lovers, and closed-door romance at its sweetest, this book is going to steal your whole heart.
Kate and Luca’s road trip down the Oregon Coast was everything: heartfelt, hilarious, and full of the kind of tension that makes you want to kick your feet. Kate is determined, guarded, and very done with Luca after he’s promoted into the job she wanted. Luca—chaotic sunshine and karaoke king—is just trying to prove he actually deserves a seat at the table.
But from broken-down cars, to unexpected one-bed situations, to late-night conversations that peel back their walls… this trip becomes so much more than corporate damage control. Watching them confront their hurt, challenge each other, and slowly choose vulnerability felt so real and beautifully done.
And let’s talk about the vibes: The coastal setting? Stunning. The music references + playlist? Perfection. The group chats + cameos from book one? Hilarious and heartwarming. Luca’s character growth? I melted.
This story made me want to book a trip to Oregon ASAP. It’s sweet, clean, immersive, and full of genuine emotion. A coworkers-to-lovers romance with depth, humor, and so much charm.
If you love road-trip romance with character growth, banter, and big feelings—add this to your TBR.
I had seen this book here on bookstagram a little while back and saved it on my kindle. I just got around to reading it, and I’m glad it did! The past couple of weeks have been super chaotic so it was nice to have an escape that was fun, sweet, and entertaining! As someone who has grown up in Oregon (and visit the coast very frequently) I really enjoyed this book. One of the biggest reasons was knowing every place that was mentioned! I thought the characters were enjoyable to read about, and the setting (of course) was beautiful! I thought that the pacing for the romance aspect was a little quick, but it also didn’t take away from the story as a whole. I just find slow burns to be more my style to read:) The Harry Styles, Coldplay, and Taylor Swift references>>> Overall this was an enjoyable and fun read! I am excited to pick up “That One Time in Hawaii” by the same author! (And I will add that the dark Cherry ice cream from Tillamook is the best kind!) I would recommend!! 🍂🌊🌲🚙⚓️ -dual pov -one bed -family drama -road trip -he falls first -sweet banter
this book was SO ADORABLE! I was hooked the whole time just waiting and waiting for luca and kate to fall in love and when they did my heart melted it was so cute and perfect. I love the build up to the final confession and figuring out that they have alway liked each other as friends and even as more than that. I like that luca was able to open up to kate and let her into his life more and more as I read the book.
the whole roadtrip trope was so cute and all the different trips that they were taking together were so cute, I was almost jealous I want to be kate and have a luca.
I was obsessed from the beginning to the end and LOVED the way that all of the friends were incorporated into the story, it made the book feel real. I think that my favorite part ever was the first time that they cuddled in the hammock it was so adorable and I was just in love with them and the way that their love and friendship was growing!!

I've been reading some of the books I've borrowed on KU. I was really excited to crack this one by Ella Beachley open, because I loved book 1 in this series. I was not disappointed.
Kate and Luca were up for the same promotion. Luca got it, and Kate was given a different one. And then the two are asked to take a road trip down the Oregon Coast together to sell the company's products.
Kate really has no love for Luca at the beginning of the book. She thinks he's a party boy who got the job based on who his grandfather is. I love that Luca surprises her from the very first of their road trip. She learns pretty quickly that her assumptions about him and his life were not at all right.
I loved how Luca is a fun guy. He's always up for karaoke or eating tacos or cookies. I really enjoyed watching him finesse Kate out of her firmly set ideas.
This one feels like a road trip, complete with snacks and music. I highly recommend it!
"This wasn't a regular Thursday night. You're not a regular Thursday night. Not for me." Luca and Kate are co-workers, until the boss, his grandfather, promotes him to the position Kate has worked towards for years. They are immediately sent on a sales trip together down the coast to work together, learn together and hopefully gain more clients, which is pretty much the last thing on Kate's list of things she would like to do. She sees Luca as entitled, spoiled and as a player. Despite their bumpy beginning, they find so many unexpected things on their journey, including what may be the most surprising find of all- love! This is going down as one of my favorite books this year! Ella Beachley is a new to me author, and I couldn't have enjoyed this read more! I fell in love with Luca and Kate- they were so different, but the way that they handled frustrations and obstacles along the way was so beautiful! I loved how they helped each other grow, how they challenged each other and respected each other! I enjoyed Kate's friendships, Luca's love for karaoke, the quirky hotels/stops they made along the way, the way music was such a part of the story (I love any story that ends with a playlist), and the time at the estate. Oregon came to life through these pages until I can't wait to visit myself! I can't wait to read more by this author and look forward to re-reading this one! I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Totally stumbled upon this book by accident. The title caught my attention because, although I’m Canadian, I’ve travelled the Oregon coast numerous times. Well, let me just say this was a pleasant surprise! I loved both lead characters (and secondary characters, too), and the work-rivals-to-lovers, road trip & grumpy-vs-sunshine tropes were fun (and pretty convincingly developed). I thought Luca’s family backstory was authentic/heartfelt, adding depth to the story, and also liked the integration of songs/albums/lyrics. My one criticism is that I don’t think the epilogue “2 years later” was necessary. Kate & Luca will be in my mind for a while, I think, and I now have a strong desire to visit Oregon again!
I absolutely loved Luca and Kate's story. They're love-hate relationship made me laugh. I loved how full of life Luca was. I was impressed with his character and how when Kate would criticize him he wouldn't get defensive and mad, he'd just take it-no matter how much it hurt. I love how Kate was able to see through the facade that Luca sometimes put up and was able to get him to open up. Such a fun story!
4.5 stars Its so hard to put in to words all the things I loved about this book. I always love how Beachley dives deep in to her characters so thoroughly but also makes them so relatable. She knows how to slowly build that tension and relationship, so it feels natural and realistic.
Luca and Kate had such fun enemies to more vibes and I loved the reverse grumpy/sunshine aspect of their relationship. It really fit them so well! I loved see their characteristics slowly come out and open up. They were so great for each other, how he opened up with her and she loosened up with his encouragement. Luca was fun, outgoing, and so much like Harry Styles. And Kate was focused, driven, and supportive.
I loved the maturity of this book and the added layer of the family drama and how that affects their relationship. It was such a real read and made me feel like I was traveling the Oregon coast with them.
Luca is absolutely my favorite! I would love to go on an adventure with him! The dynamics between he and Kate are amazing and I love how there is so much more to them than first meets the eye. Ella Beachley does an amazing job weaving their stories so we can find out what makes them tick! Cannot wait for her next book!!!
Luca is adorable and I loved seeing behind his playboy/slacker facade. I love a forced proximity trope as it allows people to finally see more than just their initial assumptions the other person. This book, like the first, needs another round of proofreading, but at least it only had about half as many mistakes as the first.
