As Donovan Creed and Callie Carpenter’s personal relationship rapidly deteriorates, urban terrorist Ryan Decker wages an all-out war against the United States.
Preliminary Review:
“In this 11th installment of the Creed series, Locke offers a bouquet to his loyal readers: a perfect blend of humor and horror that chronicles Creed and Callie’s slow, steady descent into madness.”

Another zany and hilarious and shocking ride with pulp hero Donovan Creed and his arsenal of assassins. With 20 books written in 3 years, a New York times best seller and given that Locke really doesn't follow any of the writing rules...it is all rather perplexing. And yet, I gobble up the books in one sitting. I really can't explain it folks.
-------------------------------------------------------------------- Series Review Continuing with my pursuit of the lone Hero (see reviews for Joe Pike novels, John Rain novels, and Jack Reacher novels) Donovan Creed is probably the most unique character I came across.
I'd never heard of John Locke until I received my Kindle DX in the mail. Locke made his fame and fortune self-publishing his books in the Kindle world. For the Kindle, his books are ridiculously inexpensive (around $0.99 to $1.99). I was surprised at what I read and hooked from the start. Unlike my other series books, however, there is a difference in the books in terms of ratings...so I have not given them the standard 4 or 5 star ratings across the entire series.
First of all, the books are short but packing a powerful punch, a mixture of excellent humor (left me laughing at the insanity of what I was reading) and the grim reality of a hero who kills people. Lethal people introduces us to Creed, the business he is in, his side-kicks and his insane relationship within his own world and certainly the world most of us live in (let's just say Creed is not fit to live a normal life and does not understand it). Get ready for a roller coaster ride and, above all...enjoy! You will find that towards the end of each book you will be filled with disappointment that the ride is over...and almost certainly you will hunt down the next Donovan Creed thriller.
I normally love the Donovan Creed books but this one just felt flat to me. I didn't like Creed and Callie's "love" relationship in the first place so the way it fizzled seemed rushed and forced. I'm sadly ambivalent about Maybe. The ending was just crazy - and not in the normal good way that is a Locke characteristic. This can't be the last book because we still have to find out about the baby.
I indulge two guilty pleasures in my life. Little Debbie Zebra Cakes, and Donovan Creed novels. Can't tell you why I enjoy them so much, but I always do. Intriguing characters, snappy dialogue, maybe. I find these stories way more entertaining than they should be, if that makes any sense, and the price tag doesn't hurt. Looking forward to the next one...
As much as I wanted to rate differently because of the shocking ending events, I couldn’t pass up on giving a 5 star review. Spoiler for anyone reading
Kimberly’s dead 🥺😞 I’m truly so hurt for Donovan and I wish that she could’ve stayed alive and that he and Callie could’ve kept dating. It’s a love hate moment when you continuously are surprised with every book and things happen that you don’t want to happen but you’re also glad you can’t predict what’s going to happen/that all your predictions aren’t coming true. John Locke continues to outdo himself with each and every book I read. Love it! I want more series like this with some of the stand-alone books you’ve released more recently.🤞🏾
I think Donovan and Callie getting together hurt the story. I usually get into the story right away but I found myself putting it down. Half way through it became the Donovan Creed story I always enjoyed and kept reading right through to the end. It was a 4 star read because of the last half.
The Creed series is a guilty pleasure of mine. I've read all of them to this one and I have to say this was a giant WTF is going on? It had the usual ridiculousness and oddities but it just fell flat for me. At first I liked the idea of Creed and Callie together... and then I saw how incredibly toxic it truly was. This book is the cherry on top for that.
BECAUSE WE CAN! is not the first time author John Locke has seemingly drawn his series about Donovan Creed to an apparent close, but without spoiling any events in the novel, this book certainly feels like a final installment, and an indication he's moving on to other characters.
The tone of finality is present from the opening page and only increases with each passing chapter, and while Locke rounds out many important plot elements and leaves readers feeling like this cast of characters has completed its time on stage, well...
...maybe I'm too big of a Creed fan to accept the finality of a closing chapter, but I certainly don't want to believe Locke will never revisit this world with us again.
If he does ever return to Creed's world, it will be one that changed significantly. He's pulled this off more than once in the series' 11-book run, drawing story cycles to conclusions that would have been acceptable stopping points if he never added to the series after that.
But this time feels a bit more final than any of the previous attempts to round things out.
Even so... really, John? Eleven may be a prime number, but... really?
Oh, by the way, the plot of the book was engaging and if you enjoy Locke, he's in top form in this installment.
But I guess I'm in the "denial" stage of grief. I just don't want to accept that a series I've enjoyed for quite a while now might be over. *sigh*
You really have to take the Donovan Creed series with a grain of salt. Every book in the series is strange, fast, action packed, funny, ridiculous, and did I say strange. Because We Can! is the newest installment and one of the best in the series. Like a lot of the others there are multiple point of views that eventually come together to create a cohesive story. And of course the story line is ridiculous, a terrorist going around and writing BWC on peoples butts.
Overall the book is good but there are some aspects I’m not a huge fan of. The first is the ridiculous coincidences. All the books have them but at what point do you just say come on! I also didn’t like how he references the Emmet love books, really? Thirdly I don’t like Rose the witch. Really there is a witch that just threw a mind attack on Callie, like magic? And lastly I really didn’t like then end but that could just be me I guess.
So, what if a bunch of college kids streaked central park, pulling down the cops' pants, and writing BWC in their asses? Is this a creditable enough threat to warrant a billion dollar bribery payoff? Somehow, Donovan Creed believes it is. But he still has to convince the president of the United States. I've read all of John Locke's fiction, listened to all his audiobooks. I've loved an awful lot of them. But sadly BECAUSE WE CAN! falls short. Not that the situations aren't still outrageous. Not that the characters aren't just as original. Not that the assassins aren't every bit as deadly. But a lot of the fun has gone out of it. Donovan Creed and his heart-stoppingly beautiful lady-love Callie Carpenter are just too jealous... obsessed... bitter. And then there's what happens to maybe one of my favorite John Locke characters. No that's not right. What I mean is, "then there's what happens to Maybe, one of my favorite John Locke characters." Still can't believe it.
So after reading a few other comments on this book I have to ask myself , did I read the same book or is this one of those " I will give this book a good review because of how much I love the author " . But in my opinion I did not like this book . I didn't enjoy the characters , the plot line , and the overall story . The events were scattered and did not go together well . The ending was too sick for me . I have read every one of his books and I have loved all of them ( well except for the one he did for a script for the show pretty little liars that one wasn't any good either) . Hopefully I won't have to run into any of the characters in any other books . I wish he would get back to dr box or creed , these characters are the ones I live and I can't Waite to see what happens with rose and the baby !
Take the worst characteristics of humanity, add a dash of patriotism, and write a story with a whole bunch of people fitting that description. These characters are absolutely despicable... but I love them!
Nothing at all went the way I would have hoped in this book. And yet, I still couldn't put it down. I read it straight through in one sitting, just like I do with most of Locke's stuff.
I took off one star because there were a few too many of the characters in the Locke-verse who had roles in this novel. If it's too much for me, and I've read all of Locke's works, it's too much for the casual reader to keep up with.
Still, I'll keep reading if Locke keeps writing. And I hope he does for a long time to come.
I have no idea what my fascination is with John Locke's books. I rarely rate them above 3 stars but I keep downloading the next book and can't put it down. This one was no exception. The terrorist plot seemed outlandish, the love plot was just meh (more meh than usual probably), but the ending has me considering e-mailing Mr. Locke and asking when the next book will be out.
I've finally seen the Dani Ripper origination as well which is the whole reason I started this series. I have no interest in reading the Emmett Love books but I'm considering the Gideon Box series. Again, this is odd as so far I can't stand Dr. Box and have no interest in him, but for some reason his books are on my to-read list. I suppose Mr. Locke is doing something right here.
Reading a John Locke novel is like reading an epic story that spans centuries and contains a multitude of first rate characters. I love reading him and this is no exception. Every novel pushes the global story forward. Down side... You have to start from the start of the series to enjoy every Easter eggs. He's got me hooked and I don't see how I'll stop.
this series is one of my guilty pleasures. i laugh, i roll my eyes, i get bored, i find myself on the edge of my seat, i enjoy it. this one is no different, and locke finds a way to twist the story and keep it interesting every time. it's truly a wonderful series that never quits, but it's not for someone in need of a novel to feel snobby about.
This is number 11, so if you've come this far you know what to expect. As usual, a smarter-than-average thriller with unexpected twists and Gobi-dry dialogue. I feel this is one of the better recent entries in the series, the lives of Donovan and Callie are certainly going somewhere, and I continue to be interested in just where that is.
This was, as are all the Donovan Creed books, very good. This seems like it ought to be the last in the series, but I think I read that there will be one more. I rated this one 4.3 stars. Jim finished it on 2-5-14 and rated it 4.5 stars.
John Locke continues to take his readers on a roller coaster ride with colorful and funny characters! It's best to read previous novels first before this one as the plot gets confusing of the reader isn't familiar with the usual players!
I love John Locke. Although his books are stand alone I like how he weaves characters and events from previous books into his current book. Most of the books I read are in the Christian Fiction category. John Locke is far from Christian.
Wow once again John Locke delivers another roller coaster of a story leaving breathless and shouting for more. I love the Donavan Creed novels and all the interconnecting characters from his other books. More please John as soo as you can.
As with most John Locke books, all aboard the crazy train! The book won't make sense unless you read them all and even then it will push your limits as to what you think will happen. Have fun but only if you have the stomach for it..
Fun to read. Interesting scenes. I can't stop reading John Locke's books. The plots are a bit over the top, he breaks many writing "rules" yet his work is addictive. This is book #11 in the series. I recommend you start reading the series from #1
Just as all the others before it ---- over the top, ridiculous, far-fetched, hysterical, laughable. I loved every minute of it. These characters and tall tales are such fun to read, I blow through them in a few hours.
Nothing better than a Donovan Creed book by John Locke! Our hero has changed a bit over the years, but this is more of the same great thrills, chills and craziness! If you're a fan of Creed, you'll love this book. Great to have another Creed fix in my life.
