A HARD TRAIL AHEADSixteen-year-old orphan Tyrell Breen means to become a cowboy, just like the ones he's read about in the half-dime novels, so he sets out for San Antonio, where his Uncle Cliff has a ranch. On the way, he runs afoul of a gambler and is robbed of his money and his horse, and shows up at Cliff's ranch a mighty sorry sight...but not as sorry as Cliff himself, who's been neglecting pretty much everything lately—except his whiskey bottle. Cliff had built up quite a reputation years before as a trail boss, and that's good enough for a neighboring rancher, who asks Cliff to boss a trail drive for him and get his cattle to market. Even as he accepts the job, Cliff knows he'll face more than the usual dangers and hardships of the trail—he'll have to tend to young Tyrell along the way...and he'll have to give up drinking if he wants to stay alive.
Johnny D. Boggs is a Spur- and Wrangler Award-winning author of the American West and frontier. Born in 1962, Boggs grew up on a farm near Timmonsville, South Carolina, around the old stamping grounds of Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion (chronicled in his frontier novel The Despoilers). He knew he wanted to be a writer at an early age. He lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico with his wife, Lisa Smith; son, Jack Smith Boggs; and basset hound, June.
The Lonesome Chisholm Trail – 2000 – A Western - **** - Tyrell Breen is orphaned and heads to Texas to find his uncle. Tyrell, a greenhorn, ends up on the Chisholm Trail pushing two thousand head of beef with his uncle as the trail boss. The main plot is finishing the trail drive. The book reads more like a historical fiction than a novel. The author did a fantastic job of bringing happenings of a trail drive to life. While all the detail and incidents on the drive are interesting, I failed to find any other overriding plot line other than the growth of the protagonist. If you are looking for detail about the old west, this is a great book. If you are looking of an overriding story arc, I would look some where else. I like westerns, so I will read some more by Boggs.
