The baron’s daughter, Alessandra Barrett, has worn a mask from a young age due to an injury. Many say if you were to see the face behind the mask, you would be cursed and die soon afterward. She is seen as a ghost, avoided by all who visit the baron's home until she becomes the duke’s wife.
No one could understand why the duke would pick such a wife. Did he wish to die?
What would become of the girl who once hid in the shadows but now had the spotlight on her as the duke’s masked wife?
What would everyone say if they were to learn the truth that she was in a contracted marriage with the duke?
My rating for the whole series. The ideas are good and the story is compelling - definitely soapy - but it's not well written and the pacing is slow. I ended up skipping around after the first 200 chapters (!) to get my questions answered. Note there are some pretty explicit adult scenes and a few scenes of graphic violence.
Kept me turning the page ,and looking forward to the next time I could sit down to read. I loved it ! This is my first time reading this author and I will definitely look into more.
This one was better than the other series I listened to on PocketFM. There was actually a plot twist! This time I made it to episode 480 before tiring of the whole thing. Once again, I stopped once I got to the point when I was satisfied enough with the resolution offered so far. The mystery was solved, the primary couple's problems were resolved, and it was mostly clear where the side characters' arcs were headed.
But it was pretty annoying that the book felt more like a daily accounting than a novel. Not every conversation needs to be written. Not every activity needs to be included.
This review is for the entire series, and is NOT spoiler free! Discovered the novel from a PocketFM ad. The author herself mentioned the book was available on Novelbin on Reddit. In total there are 550 chapters with relevant bonus chapters.
What the series does correctly is make the couples interesting. The slow burn is done well. This point also extends toward the events happening in the series. The drama is messy enough to keep you turning the page!
That being said: the story is written poorly. I legitimately thought a teenager wrote this as the quality got worse over time. Characters will either talk for way too long, or they don't speak enough. Sometimes you can't tell if someone is yelling or calm with how bad punctuation oscillates. The author will add ellipses as line breaks when it's the same scene continuing. The grammar gets worse half-way into the book.
Furthermore, I absolutely hated how certain topics were handled. Sexual Assault is almost used as a crutch to show the female villains sympathy. It treats a male victim worse, as we're "treated" to him developing Stockholm Syndrome for his abuser.
Edgar is a terrible dom to the point consent was muddied. I need writers to stop including BDSM dynamics when they do not understand the dom is supposed listen to the sub! I'm literally over seeing the dom override the consent or decision a sub makes. Consent is so strictly clear in those spaces for a reason.
These characters will do the most VILE things for their comeuppance to be anti-climatic. The most disappointing thing for me is that Duchess Alessandra's story was underwhelming. The story goes from what Alessandra wants for her life to what Edgar wants. Alessandra became a plot device in her own story. I left the book frustrated because we didn't get the Alessandra the story hinted at before the author decided she needs to be an incubator for Edgar to fix his family relationships.

I am not done with the whole of the series while writing this, but I have read enough that I have a pretty good idea of the plot and writing style of the work. Although I enjoy the story there are a few things that really get under my skin about this series. I don't want to bash the author, but I feel like if you are going to choose a time in which to have the setting of your story to be, then you should follow the speech used for that era. This seems to take place in an era of the past, with corsets, lace up dresses, before electricity in houses, etc. Maybe the 17 or 1800's? During that time people did not use phrases like "cool" "oh, snap" and "awesome". There weren't zips on clothing. Just a few examples. It just takes away from the experience of the story. Now, I don't know if this was because of where I read this or not, but shouldn't the body or writing be edited for typos and grammatical errors? I haven't gone a sentence without missing letters, wrong words used, or some type of error in general. Again it just takes away from the body of work. Overall it's a good story, but when you don't have the proper editing and you haven't followed along with the time frame that you chose it just really pulls away from what you're trying to convey. I am not trying to bash the author, I guess I'm just trying to add some insights and thoughts from a reader.

This isn’t exactly a romance, it starts out kind of like a Cinderella story except it has a more modern type plot of an arranged contract marriage for a woman who’s mother left and when her father remarried he let his new wife and daughter bully and abuse his daughter. Now she has agreed to marry a duke to escape her prison of a home but her family has other plans because all they care about is money and doing evil things and it also looks like this series will be a revenge story as well. Good so far but one star off for this type of story being redone sooooo many times where a contract marriage and the whole evil stepmother and sister and revenge thing. But who doesn’t love a good revenge story, even if it isn’t very realistic? It’s fiction so…
The storyline is good, but the writing feels a bit amateur. With the number of grammar mistakes, the book really needs proper proofreading and editing. Some parts were so redundant that I ended up skipping over them. As it stands, it’s hard to justify spending nearly $90 to read the whole 19-book series, so I stopped at book 3. With better editing and tighter writing, it would be enjoyable enough to finish the series. Honestly, it might work better as a single book priced at $4.99 instead of 19 separate installments.
The love story of Duke Edwin Collins and Alexandra. Duke Collins is not looking for a bride but his best friend, the king, is telling everyone he is. So all the nobles are but their daughters of marriage age in front of him for marry. Then he mets Alexandra, who wore a mask because of an injury on her face. Will they make a match or will he find another? Great story.
Story plot is interesting, I feel I want to know more, however the writing seems amateurish. So many misspelled words like there’s no editing. Then there is grouping of words missing. The price for a short story written so poorly is a bit high. I paid over 5$ for this book. I’m skeptical about looking for book 2
This is the book that I never thought I would enjoy but I have enjoyed it. Alexander is a sweet innocent person being held captive by her family, Edgar is a Duke with more money than he knows what to do with and a heart of gold. The contract marriage it's only the beginning. This is a book series worth reading
I purchased the series from Amazon after wasting money buying coins from PFM 😫. It's a great series, that's a page turner. This is something I ordinarily wouldn't have read 🤔. It's more of a historical series that is so worth all the excitement 😉.
