“The Summer of Keeping Secrets” is a unique second chance story that focuses on Marin Henderson and her two adult children—daughter Slade, and son Reed. With alternating POVs the three expose their innermost thoughts as they navigate new beginnings, challenging times, and secrets of the past.
I love how this imperfect family loves and communicates the best way they know how. Their flaws are believable, their struggles feel authentic, and they’re so easy to connect with and relate to. It’s easy to root for them as they work their way through loss, attempt to bury the past, struggle to find purpose, and try to heal relationships. As I neared the end of the book, I found myself slowing my pace because I knew once I read the last page, I’d be leaving them behind.
It's difficult to categorize this story because it skillfully blends elements of mystery, romance, friendship, family, grief, healing, communication, and second chances. I love the tender moments in this story (I was so moved by secondary characters, Mr. and Mrs. Swink!) as well as those that are fun and witty. The storytelling is spot-on, making me eager to seek out more by this new-to-me author!
First Line: Marin Henderson looked forward to her upcoming extended stay in Dillon, Colorado, as much as she would an IRS audit, her annual pap, or consuming those disgusting chocolate-covered cherries with the sugary, syrupy liquid inside.
