Dr D(iane) M Greenwood described herself as "a low level ecclesiastical civil servant". Coming originally from Norfolk in England, she took a first degree in classics at Oxford, then, as a mature student, a second degree in theology at London University. She taught at various schools before working for the diocese of Rochester. She was described by an ex-pupil as "a classics teacher of terrifying erudition and eccentricity". She retired as diocesan director of education for the diocese of Rochester in 2004. She published nine Theodora Braithwaite novels between 1991 and 1999. She was last heard of living in Greenwich with her lurcher bitch.
These murder mystery books are a refreshing take on a subject which I'm not usually drawn to. They have all the desired twists and turns that keep your pages turning. Hopefully the saga of Theodora Braithwaite will continue her skills at solving crimes.
I found every one of the Theodora Braithwaite stories a joy to read. What a treat to find such thoughtful, thought provoking, witty, sometimes unkind and at the same time laugh out loud funny stories. Beautifully and carefully crafted and written in pure, unadulterated English. I will certainly treasure these books and re-read them many times.
The first 6 books held my interest but the last 3 were too convoluted. Multiple characters and too much emphasis on the intricacies of the various church hierarchies were boring. The author does have an extensive vocabulary and command of language.
I enjoyed reading this series even though I found myself having to use the dictionary a lot for this series. It became somewhat irritating after a while. I felt some of the language used was very archaic - unnecessarily so.
