The Confessions of Saint Augustine: Translated by Edward Bouverie Pusey (Original and complete edition) - 1909

Rate this book
The Confessions of Saint Augustine is a profound and intimate autobiographical account of Saint Augustine of Hippo, one of the most influential theologians in Christian history. Written between AD 397 and AD 398, this spiritual masterpiece delves into Augustine's journey from a life of sin and spiritual unrest to his profound conversion to Christianity. Through the course of thirteen books, Augustine recounts his early years in the North African city of Thagaste, his studies in Carthage, his indulgence in worldly pleasures, and his subsequent disillusionment with the Manichean heresy. His passionate quest for truth eventually leads him to the Christian faith, under the guidance of the scriptures and the influence of his saintly mother, Monica. The work goes beyond mere autobiography, exploring intricate philosophical and theological ideas, particularly the nature of sin, the concept of time, and the unyielding love of God. Pusey's translation from Latin captures the raw emotional intensity and intellectual vigor of Augustine's original text, offering readers a compelling glimpse into the heart and mind of a Church Father who has shaped Christian thought for centuries.

Do NOT read Pusey’s translation. This was such a hard read 😭 if you love yourself at all, read a different translation. Don’t get me wrong the prose is utterly beautiful, but it is all to easy to get lost in the sauce.
