Oakwood Bay #1

Only in Your Dreams

Rate this book
A spicy small-town, brother’s best friend, sports romance “packed with sizzling tension, heat, and sweet, swoon-worthy moments” (Peyton Corinne, author of TikTok sensation Unsteady) between a college football coach and the one that got away that you’ll want to devour in one sitting.

If he can prove he loved her then, and he loves her still, this time might be different.

Ten years after one of the most heartbreaking nights of her life, Melody Woods is back in her small hometown of Oakwood Bay, broke, jaded, and unceremoniously dumped by her big-city boyfriend. To top it all off, her twin brother, Parker, is pushing her to take his spot on a camping trip with the one guy she’s spent a decade avoiding.

For college football coach Zac Porter, his best friend’s twin sister, Melody, has always been off-limits. And after fumbling his chance ten years ago, a devastated Zac was sure he’d lost Melody for good. So, when Melody shows up at the campsite instead of Parker, Zac realizes that now is the time to prove to her that they were always meant to be, no matter how long it takes to make up for his teenage self’s mistake.

Reeling from the truth of her last relationship, Melody plans to stay in town just long enough to get back on her feet. Then, she’s gone again. Meanwhile, Zac is facing an uphill battle to coach his team to its first winning game in years, to show Melody how she deserves to be loved, and to keep Parker from ever finding out. Maybe then, being with her will be more than just a dream.

I wanna cry 😭 I always have such high hopes when best friends sister/brothers best friend because I love it soooo much but this one was so frustrating 😭 It definitely did not go as I expected it was and I also didn;t know that it was second chance 🌚 and second chances are a hit or a miss for me, the latter if I'm not prepared. The starting tbh was very fun, I was so invested and I the angst and tension was there but everything was happening so fast and then the author was adding conflict to keep it interesting but I was getting annoyed by that and for a 400 pages book this definitely felt a lot longerrrrrr. I enjoyed the writing but there came a point where I just wanted the book to be finished.

Mel, I was sooooo annoyed by her but I also understood but it still did nothing for me, she was so in love but the denial put me at the edge of punching myself and Zac, what the hell did he even do besides wetting his lips when looked at her, Even tho I was mad at the character for the entirety of the book I enjoyed the romance. The smut got too much at one point but the romance was enjoyable to an extent. I wanted more from that trope to be honest but it didnt give me enough. Also there came a point where there was so much back and forth that I just dnf'd it 😭 but then I felt bad and I picked it up and finished it.

I liked that there was no third act breakup/ I think that was one of the saving grace of this book and of course the ending was very sweet. This book could have been so much more enjoyable but the whole friends to lovers/second chance didn't hit for me.

Overall, It was an okay book.

This has brothers best friend 😭 which is my fav trope!! The publishers reached out to me for this arc and it sounded so fun!! and the release dates close as well, hoping to binge it and hopefully love it!

Writing: good | Plot: see below for disclaimers | Ending: aww

SYNOPSIS

After a surprise breakup, Melody is back home in buttfucknowhere-ville where she's forced to jump-start her life AND face Zac, her high-school crush who left her hanging.

MY OPINION

Okay if you want to enjoy this, you need to accept the following: This is a second-chance romance where the first chance was fumbled in high school. Melody and Zac haven't spoken since that night (10 years ago) but yet Zac is still irrevocably in love with her. If you cannot get past the fact Zac still harbours VERY intense feelings for Melody despite a decade of no-contact, you will HATE this book. Since I willingly read this, I just pretended it had only been 5 months and those clover tatts didn't exist lol (that was hard to look past though, I won't lie).

Anyways, still on board? Okay cool. Despite Zac wanting to shave Melody's head and wear her hair as a wig, I liked that the banter was still good between them. Zac wasn't afraid to clapback or be cocky, which isn't what I was expecting given his long-standing feelings toward her. Other than the questionable obsession with Melody, Zac is the type of MMC I like. I call his type, the fridge—strong, useful, and a lil cold but keeps everything safe.

This is VERY picante and it pops off pretty early. Still, there's a good mix of plot and spice. It's not a straight up porno. I liked Melody coming to grips with her previous relationship. The side characters were strong too and I look forward to their individual stories. Zac didn't really have much going on for him other than his feelings for Melody, but that's fine. Since my husband may or may not have been a Division I tennis coach back in the day, Zac being a college football coach definitely added to my enjoyment of this book.

Oh and NO THIRD ACT BREAK UP!!!! LET'S GOOOOOOO!!

PROS AND CONS

Pros: funny, fast-paced, good balance of plot and wide-open door spice, liked Zac (minus the tattoo part *shudders*), Melody's character was well-rounded, side characters added to the story, fun vibes (if you can accept this is a second chance romance wherein the MMC has been in love with the FMC for a decade despite no contact), good writing

Cons: clover tattoos

I can't believe the type of rollercoaster my heart had throughout this book! 🎢 I suffered, laughed, gasped, and ached with Melody Woods & Zac Porter 💖

Melody Woods goes back home because she got dumped and after 10 years reunites with her childhood crush Zac Porter aka brother's best friend aka bring on the TENSION! 😏🔥 I loved how they reunited (from an awful "goodbye" between them) and the way they had to share a tent and, even worse, get stranded together (WORSE FOR THEM, AMAZING FOR THE READER 🏕️ heheheh)

This book had it all! The way Zac was obviously still into her and Melody tried so hard to deny herself... let me just say, it didn't last very long. 😂 It was a medium slow burn, and I loved how the author sprinkled in tiny details that screamed how obsessed this MAN was with the "one that got away" vibe. 😍

The progression from friends to lovers, followed by Zac giving Melody the space she needed to grow and love herself again after her last relationship, was so beautifully written 💖 I definitely recommend it and can’t wait for the rest of the series! Even though I adored them, I felt the book was a bit long... but hey, it entertained me nevertheless! ❤️✨

"I am in love with you, Melody. I have been in love with you. And frankly, given the way the past fourteen years of my life have gone, I don't see a way out of it."

Another super entertaining read that went be pretty quickly.

Best part of this book hands down is Zac. He has been in love with Melody for over a decade and when she finally comes back he is absolutely determined to win her over. He is such a marshmallow, and adorably jealous of people he knows are not threats, and those moments made me laugh constantly. And he was ALWAYS supporting her, even when he knew what she wanted out of her life would potentially put her in a different city. Just green flags everywhere.

I'm 50/50 on Melody. On one hand, she could be really funny, was really smart, and was also getting herself back to who she was before her shithead of an ex manipulated her for 6 years. So she was very understandably hesitant to start anything new and to trust herself first, but I was not connecting with her a lot of the time. Almost felt like she was leading him on at times or just being really selfish, which again, after what she went through she has every right to be, but it wasn't working for me here.

And no third act breakup! Some obstacles, sure. And some tough information to learn, but Melody says she just needs time to process the info, which is essentially a 180 from what she originally thought. And that time to process didn't mean that she had to have space away from him, just time to just be and acclimate.

Overall really enjoyed and would recommend 🩵

this book was just confusing and i was feeling lost the whole time i was reading it.

ˏˋ°•*⁀➷ characters
i want to begin with characters and their development because i saw nothing in main characters. that’s such a weird thing, but i was more interested in background characters then the main ones. they (main characters) both were too similar and had no defining characteristics. i read about 60% and i noticed no chemistry or interest in any of the characters.

ˏˋ°•*⁀➷ advertisement/tropes
second chance romance was also not a second chance. he confessed his feeling and then left but they never were together??? does it count as a second chance? i don’t think so. they never even were together to begin with🙆🏼‍♀️

ˏˋ°•*⁀➷ plot
was there any plot? the story begins with forest camping and main characters being forgotten about. they have to survive together in the woods and overall an interesting situation. but after that? the football, trainings, friends and family. too much stuff going on. it felt like reading a boring every day book about someone’s life.

to end, i loved the forest/camping scenes. it was so interesting to see them survive together. but… i can’t believe their friends never noticed them being lost

3.8 stars! 🌟 Huge thanks to NetGalley and Atria Books for the ARC of Only in Your Dreams by Ellie K. Wilde! This 432-page sports romance hits shelves on January 21, 2025, and trust me, it’s got all the feels. 🥰

Reading this felt like snuggling up in your coziest sweater while chaos, drama, and swoon-worthy tension unfold on the page. Zac and Melody’s story is a small-town, second-chance romance dream with tropes galore—and NO third-act breakup. 🎉 (Seriously, Ellie K. Wilde, thank you for sparing my heart!)

✨ Tropes Galore ✨
✧ Second chance 💞
✧ Brother’s best friend 💖
✧ Forced proximity ⛺
✧ Small-town romance 🏡
✧ "It’s always been you" 💘
✧ Reverse grumpy-sunshine 🌞
✧ Sneaking around 🤭
✧ Healing from heartbreak 💔
✧ Fake dating 🤥
✧ Protective MMC 🛡️

What I Loved
Zac? Literal human fridge: solid, reliable, and lowkey cold, but he’s exactly what Melody needs in her chaos. A DECADE of pining is excessive (sir, get a hobby—or therapy), but his snark, sweetness, and fiercely protective side totally won me over. 💕 Melody’s journey of rebuilding her confidence post-breakup had me rooting for her every step of the way. She shines in this book, and Zac supporting her without making it all about him? PERFECTION. 🥹

The chemistry? SCORCHING. 🔥 The wilderness forced-proximity setup was gold—equal parts giggle-worthy and spicy. Their banter had me grinning, and the flashbacks added just the right dose of emotional weight. And those side characters? Parker and Brooks need their own stories, like, yesterday. 👏

What Didn't Work
- The pacing dragged in a few spots, especially when the focus wasn’t on Zac and Melody.
- The reason for their 10-year silence? WEAK. Dude, ever heard of texting?! 😩

HIGHLIGHTS
- No third-act breakup—HALLELUJAH! 🥳
- Steamy scenes with emotional depth. 💓
- Side characters that stole my heart (Brooks, I’m looking at you). 💕
- Angsty second-chance vibes that hit just right. 🎯

BOTTOM LINE
This is for the second-chance girlies who love a protective football coach MMC, small-town charm, and “it’s always been you” romance. Melody and Zac’s chemistry will keep you hooked, and that HEA left me smiling like an idiot. 🥹 Definitely recommend for fans of angsty-but-sweet romance with just the right spice.

CW: Gaslighting ex, emotional manipulation, brief mentions of toxic relationships.

Don't be fooled by this cutesy cover, Only in Your Dreams is hot, hot, hot, and lucky me, it's just my kind of spice!

In this book, we are following Melody Woods and Zac Porter. Melody has just returned to her hometown of Oakwood Bay, after a decade away, following a painful breakup.

She's moved in with her twin brother, Parker, and is trying to process everything. In an effort to encourage her out of her funk, Parker has been pushing her to take his spot on an upcoming camping trip with his friends.

To be fair, some of them used to be Melody's friends, including Zac, Parker's best friend, and the boy who broke her heart 10-years ago. Whatever. She's so disconnected with all things Oakwood Bay at this point.

Parker's best friend, Zac, a college football coach, is reeling Melody is back in town. He messed things up with her 10-years ago, and has never truly forgiven himself for it.

When she shows up at the campsite in Parker's place, he can hardly believe it. Maybe this is his chance to win her back?

But with Melody focused on getting back on her feet and returning to the city, and with Zac stressing over his team's lack of wins, will he be able to put the proper time into winning back Melody's affections?

Adding complication to the matter, they have to keep any sort of relationship they have a total secret from Melody's brother, Parker, who Zac knows would flip his top if he thought they were getting involved.

There were so many aspects of this that I absolutely adored. I loved the small town feel and all the characters that we got to meet over the course of the story. I'm excited to find out what other characters we're going to follow in this series of companion novels. There's so many options!

The chemistry between Melody and Zac was off the charts. I loved the banter, and getting both perspectives, to know what they were thinking along the way, was so fun. I know Wilde will be delivering more of that in the next books.

I've never actually read a Sports Romance before. Football is my sport and apparently, this is the Romance I didn't know I needed; following a College Football Coach?

Yes, please!!!

I really appreciated that too. That we were following the coaching staff, as opposed to the players. There's nothing wrong, of course, with following the players, it's just when you think of a coaching staff, and the men and women in those positions, they are usually people who are of a certain age, or maturity level.

Zac is DEFINITELY young for a head coach, but it's a smaller school and he's a local guy, so that does make sense. Zac did have a maturity level about him though that was respectable. Particularly, in regards to how focused he was on making Melody know how special, and loved, she was.

This does explore some emotional abuse and gaslighting from Melody's previous relationship, and I felt that was handled fairly well. She was definitely on a journey, and I liked that it took her some time to process it all, as opposed to just hanging out with another guy and being over it.

Overall, I had an absolute blast with this one. Look, we all have our things. Romance, particularly Steamy Romance is very subjective. We all have our likes, dislikes, turn-ons and offs, and yeah, let's be honest, kinks.

Read this if you are into Alpha Male Energy: protective, yet supportive, tats, and aggressive dirty talk. Don't read if you don't like these things, cause there's a lot of them.

Thank you to the publisher, Atria Books, for providing me with a copy to read and review. I have a copy of the next book, Only Between Us, and I'm hoping to pick it up soon!

another entrant into my perfect book boyfriend hall of fame: zac. zac, thank you for everything you gave because you gave everything, babe.

this is brother's ex best friend, forced proximity, friends to enemies to lovers, all the good things!!! melody hates zac based on what happened when she last saw him ten years ago but when she's stuck on a camping trip with him, they're forced to interact and she's enlightened to zac being stuck on that last time too.

i go back and forth with brother's best friend because the premise of a brother being so obsessed with his sister's dating life is not always for me and this one seemed to be going in that direction but then i just LOVED how zac slowly wove his way into melody's life. he knew she would spook easily from their past and her recent ex and was just infiltrating little by little. his support of her, her career, finding herself and her independence was just everything and their little found family was so cute.

This book had been on my Kindle Unlimited check out list for a minute, and then I realized that it was getting published which CONGRATS- so I applied for the ARC and YAY here we are :) I really enjoyed this first book into a series. It was small town with some sports thrown in as well as a second chance with brother's best friend. I liked these characters a lot! I liked watching Melody who had been gaslighted in her long relationship realize this truth and become comfortable in her own skin again. And I LOVED that Zac was helping her do all of this with the underlying plan of getting her to now only forgive him but to fall for him again. I thought the flashback at the beginning was the perfect setup to how everything unfolded. I will say that the reason they didn't talk for 10 years was a little weak in my opinion BUT I also know Melody put her heart on the line and was basically ghosted. Fast forward and Melody has been dumped, is moving in with her brother and ends up camping with Zac. I liked the disaster that followed and how the tension between them was still there. It was so cute watching Zac coax Melody out ever so slowly. How he was trying to make her realize how amazing she was. I also liked watching Melody help Zac grow in his confidence with his new job. I liked the sneaking around- there's always something so scandalous about that. And man did I like the plot twist of Melody fake dating someone to hide what her and Zac were doing. Bottom line these two missed their moment when they were 18 but now was their time to see if what they had was the real thing. They made each other better. They SHINED together!

Melody has found herself in an unthinkable position. She has been dumped by her boyfriend of 6 years so he can go do whatever he wants on a guys trip. She has moved back home to the town she has been avoiding for 10 years because her brother's best friend broke her heart. And now she's living with her brother TEMPORARILY. Until she can figure out her next step. The next step was not meant to be camping with said best friend, Zac. The boy now man who gave her hope and then ghosted her without a trace. Somehow she has found herself camping with him in the SAME tent. Then under a bizarre twist of events they are alone trying to survive together in the wilderness for a few days. She can't deny that her feelings for him are mixed. How has he gotten more handsome? But she notices he doesn't smile like he used to. He keeps wanting to bring up what happened between them, but she isn't ready. Especially because she is starting to realize that her relationship with her ex may not have been the most healthy. Her and Zac have an explosive moment together but she makes it clear this was a one time thing. He then reaches out a few days later with a thin line about not being able to sleep without her. Which is how she finds herself playing house with her ex who she can't stop thinking about. Who is surprising her at every turn. Who is holding her hand through this reawakening of herself. So she gives back a little- she helps him with work. She shows up for him. And even though they are having to hide this thing between them she knows it's the real deal. She keeps reminding herself that she is going to be leaving soon. But something tells her that if Zac asked she would figure it out. Because even though they missed their chance all those years ago, she isn't willing to let things fizzle again.

Zac has just been handed a gift. A second chance with the love of his life, his best friend's little sister. He messed up all those years ago because he didn't know how to handle what happened. So he ghosted her and has regretted it ever since. But now she's back. And she is here camping with him. Sleeping in his tent. Looking more beautiful than he could have ever thought. And he is reminded of his feelings for her that have never left. He decides then and there that he is going to do everything in his power to get her to forgive him and then in a perfect world fall for him. Because he has been living as a shell of a man since she has been gone. While camp circumstances strike that put them in closer quarters than expected. They sleep in the same bed. Wake up snuggling. He has never slept better than this. He sees how she looks at him. So when she makes a move he goes for it. But then she says that was a one time thing. He wants to talk about what happened between them. He wants to explain how deep his feelings are. But they leave and he waist patiently before reaching out. He throws out an idea that he needs her to sleep well. And what do you know she shows up at his house. And now they are doing this. And though she asks to go the distance together, he won't do it until she admits that she wants more. He shows up for her though. He helps her come out of her shell that was her ex. He shows her what things could be like between them and then she agrees to do this thing. But no one can know. He comes up with a way to cover things up and now they are doing this thing. But she keeps talking about leaving and he has to convince her to stay. Or at least that he will go anywhere with her because he can't go on living another day without her. Not this time.

I liked this intro to a series. The setting was great. I liked Parker a lot- how diabolical of him to get these two together! I liked Brooks and can't wait to read his book which is next. I love getting to meet all of the characters that we will get to follow on their love journey. The angst in this one was perfect. I loved learning about how deep Zac's feelings for Melody were and having her learn it too was cool. I also liked the added adopted son if you will of Zac quarterback who stayed with them and kind of made them a little family of sorts. Overall I would recommend this one if you are looking for a steamy, second chance romance with a fun cast of characters and a lovely HEA!

okay she ended up pulling through! this was sweet if not a smidge shallow? superficial? but i can’t place my finger on how exactly. it was very cookie cutter tropey but in the best way! like, that is a genuine compliment i liked the way it was delivered and there was no third act conflict 🥳

if anything she was way too long. the scenes ate but they DRAGGED and when the mc’s weren’t together i was bored. i hope there’s more the side characters’ stories, those were all super interesting 👀

⤿ Thank you to Atria Books for the physical arc and finished copy in exchange for an honest review!

well, here i am sitting with another low rating on a sport-ish romance book. i'm really not sure if they're just not for me, or what is up with that. i thought this one might be better as it's about two grown adults, who aren't in college, but are still orbiting around american football, but it just was not my cup of tea. there was potential, but it ended up falling short.

the story starts off with the main character Melody getting dumped by her big-city boyfriend and forced to return to her hometown of Oakwood Bay, which she's been avoiding for a while. her senior year she was on the verge of kissing her twin brother's best friend, Zac, who she had a crush on forever, but he left and didn't end up coming back or reaching out. she plans to stay in town only long enough to get back on her feet and then move out again, but Zac is determined to get her to stay and retry what they didn't get to before.

the entire first 100 pages with the camping trip nonsense? not needed. it was so strange to dive right into the story and have Melody and Zac smushed together on this camping trip, get stranded, none of their friends who were with them realize they were missing, just to have them dry humping in the mud because they're "too horny" when her brother inevitably shows up looking for them. i was cringing really hard at this point in the book, but with 300 pages left i was hoping the story was going to go somewhere interesting and make some sort of turn around. and while it did, the camping trip was never mentioned again and we just watched Melody and Zac start to interact in everyday life, i was left wondering why these first 100 pages were even included.

usually i'm a fan of the fake-dating trope too, but there was ZERO reason for it to happen here. Melody and Zac essentially admit that they have fun together, but Melody doesn't want her brother to know that they're hooking up, because apparently in high school he said no one in his friends could date her. so her solution, that Zac for some reason goes along with, is to fake-date her brother's OTHER BEST FRIEND and try to convince him and Zac are not a thing. it turns out it was a way where she was trying to avoid her own feelings as well, so she wouldn't get hurt again by Zac like he hurt her before. but for some reason, neither of them decided to actually talk through that moment until the very end of the book, so it was basically a whole bunch of miscommunication underlying the entire story.

while they do end up together, and actually have some decent chemistry down the line, there were some red flags that just kept sticking out to me. Zac while generally a sweet guy, had his entire personality based around keeping Melody in Oakwood Bay, even if she had other dreams. i also get that he had a crush on her in high school, but there was a point where his obsession with her after 10 years being a part was too much for me. while they were not in contact, he built the house she had on her vision board in high school, for her, so she would come back and live with him. he also got a tattoo of a clover for every year they didn't talk, as she used to give him clovers before football games, so he has 10 clovers tattooed on his ribcage. this was just all, waaaaay too much for me and almost felt stalker-ish. i didn't end up really wanting them to be together after this, as it felt very manipulative on his end to keep her with him. i think Melody needed to spend some time being single, which i don't say very often, but i really think that she needed to not be with Zac.

as a final thought, while i do generally enjoy childhood friends to lovers and i didn't initially mind the childhood friends to "enemies" to lovers, the romance moved so fast. it was also very smut driven, with little to no emotional connection between the characters being built between them before sexual scenes started happening. smut was the main focus of this book, and i can definitely appreciate some well-written smut when it's implemented into the plot well too. but this was too much and i wish that there had been connection built before then. i think it just wasn't for me.

trigger warnings: emotional manipulation, toxic relationship, physical fighting, verbally abusive parent mentioned, depiction of alcoholism

This didn’t work for me at all.

After getting broken up with by her awful, love-bombing (for 6 years!!!) ex melody goes back to the small town where she left her twin and her childhood crush. and immediately- like less than 30% into the book immediately- starts hooking up with him. but because it’s the cliched version of brother’s best friend, that’s like the only reason they’re not together. pls. it’s so tired!!

there is exactly zero tension. they hook up in MUD for the first time??? and then they start platonically sleeping together bc they’re scarred from a run in with a wolf. melody enacts a “no kissing” rule, which, again, cliched.

this book was trying to go for something, but it truly didn’t work for me. it’s just another romance with played out played up tropes that was extremely boring.

the “healing” from the abusive relationship was so shallow. and zac came onto her creepily strong. like this girl literally just got kicked out of her apartment and you’re finger banging her not even 30% of the book? let the girl heal instead of coming on so strong and buying her shit and everything else.

not for me unfortunately! thank you netgalley and atria for the arc!

read this one a few months ago and never fully wrote a review so here it goes!! (based off what i remember lol) so this was a really cute, second chance romance between two exes who had a falling out and bad breakup many years ago. zac left town and now he's back, and guess what they reunite on a camping trip. her brother was there but left and then they shared a tent.... things led to other things.

something so precious was both of them carrying the bracelets all these years, and the tattoos? 😫

the miscommunication hurt here but i loved how they rekindled and the house. GUYS THE HOUSE oh my freaking gosh, her literal dreammmm house. sbfkjbsdkjfbkjs i loved this book and might need to reread soon !!

I adore the small-town trope, so the chances of me liking this book were quite high.

Tropes:
- small town
- brother's best friend
- sports romance
- forced proximity
- one bed

The beginning was quite decent, but the characters' behavior didn’t really match their age. It felt like I was reading about teenagers just starting college rather than adults nearing their 30s. That's why I didn't really enjoy the story.

I appreciated how the book addressed the topic of psychological abuse in relationships and how well it highlighted how such abuse can be disguised as care.

In my subjective opinion, this book will appeal to fans of Hannah Grace's works.

making me giddy over a second chance romance? nearly impossible. but this brother’s bff + it’s always been you had me on my knees.

the pacing - perfect.
the banter - delicious.

went into this one with zero expectations and was absolutely giddy every page.

I was highly anticipating this book after reading the sixty/forty rule but god this was so disappointing!!

The story really dragged on, there was absolutely no need for it to be 500 pages long! Literally nothing happens for a majority of the book! I ended up skipping large chunks when I got 70% in. It was so obvious from the beginning why Zac left Melody 10 years ago and so it was just dragged out unnecessarily 🙄

I really disliked her brother and found him just as controlling as her Ex! It’s no wonder she fell for a guy like that after growing up with such a controlling brother! I really wished she would of got mad at him at least for interfering with her life so much!

Also the reasoning for Zac to leave her hanging was so stupid and I really didn’t like him. He was sappy for so much of the book, and I know it’s expected to a certain degree with these books but this was just next level. I was cringing so much!

Overall this was so disappointing! And really breaks my heart because I really loved the author’s other books. I’m not sure what happened here 😕

First, thank you to NetGalley, Atria Books, and Ellie Wilde for sending this arc for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

This was my first book by Ellie and it did not disappoint. She will be an automatic read author for me from here on out.

This was such a sweet story, and while there were frequently used tropes in the story, it was SUCH a unique plot - even with the subtle nod to The Notebook. I couldn’t get enough of it and devoured it in a day.

Zac and Melody were childhood friends, Zac being Melody’s twin brother’s best friend. They both had feelings for each other in high school but didn’t know the other felt the same way, and it just didn’t work out for them before Melody left their small town for college, while Zac stayed behind, playing football for their town’s university and going on to be the head coach of the football team.

Zac’s character is written so well, he’s the sweetest guy with all the pining and adoration, and the depth of it all is so well articulated it makes you swoon and want to cry on his behalf.

Melody is considered the “grumpy” of the two main characters, but is so witty and hilarious, her banter makes for light entertainment mixed in with the deep love story aspect.

I love the light shown on mental abuse (in her past relationship), and how abuse isn’t always physical. Real women go through that and the gaslighting that comes along with it more than people realize, so I appreciate the inclusion of that experience.

Sports romance readers who love when there’s no third act breakup will eat this up. The spice was spicing after the slow-ish burn, the banter is great, and the angst is top notch. The side characters added so much to this book as well, and I hope to see a book for Brooks, Summer, and Parker to come!

A steamy, tension-filled second chance romance!

I could’ve melted at how cute this was! Zac’s love for Melody is so palpable and intense that it’s nearly impossible not to love him. The chemistry between them is WOW undeniable, and their slow-burn reconnection was perfectly executed! Watching Melody—who’s had a rough past when it comes to love—find her footing with Zac was heartwarming.

I swooned over the matching bracelets they had—especially the fact that they kept them even when they were no longer in each other’s lives! It was a beautiful, touching reminder of their past and their bond.

The dialogue, however, definitely got on my nerves here and there. Melody, despite being likable, occasionally frustrated me in ways I can’t even pinpoint. And Zac, he kind of gave me the ick at times. But the overall vibe of the story was cutesy regardless!

All in all, despite a few bumps in the road, this book delivered an exceptional steamy romance with tons of heart!

I really wanted to love this one but…I didn’t get there.

The dynamic in this relationship felt more YA to me, which isn’t bad but, it wasn’t what I was looking for. Aspects of conflict and some behavior felt childish to me and I could not get on board. I think I wasn’t the right reader for this particular story, and it will be a better fit for someone else.

As my first Ellie K. Wilde novel, I can tell you it definitely won’t be my last! The story of Melody and Zac had me absolutely hooked from start to finish. The characters are so well-developed.

Melody’s character really resonated with me. Watching her grow, heal, and move on from the pain of her previous relationship was such a beautiful thing to witness. With a determination to rediscover herself, it was impossible not to root for this relatable character.

Zac is book boyfriend goals. PERIOD. He’s so kind-hearted, thoughtful and sweet. This man is loyal to the end. His career struggles added to the depth of his character.

It was a rewarding experience to watch both of these flawed yet deserving people overcome the past to build a future together. And that chemistry?! The heat literally radiated off the page! Their sneaking around was so fun to experience and added an extra layer to the dynamic of the story.

“I’ve never been single. I’ve been yours.”

You’ll love this book if you enjoy:
✧ Second chance
✧ Brother’s best friend
✧ Forced proximity
✧ Small town romance
✧ It’s always been you
✧ Reverse grumpy x sunshine
✧ Sneaking around
✧ Healing from heartbreak

melody and zac u are everything to meeeee!!

this was so so cute, if a little shallow at points. but honestly i can't even complain about that bc it really just reads like a sweet, fun little romcom with a few emotional punches. also the ending is literally the 🥹 emoji.

writing was fast paced and really easy to read, there wasn't a lot of fluff but it also wasn't blunt and unreadable. overall if u want a cute romance then i'd 100% recommend this one!

thank you to atria books for reaching out & to netgalley for the arc! all opinions are my own <3

the publisher sent me an email with the e-arc of this and i nearly screamed bc that's the first time anyone has ever reached out to me about reading their book!!???!?!?? this sounds like it's right up my alley too i'm so excited guys 🤭

Melody breaks up with her boyfriend and returns to her hometown to live with her brother. Soon, she meets Zac, her high school crush.
Zac is now a football coach, though things aren’t going well with his team. He’s caring, sweet, loyal, and still loves Melody.
Melody had been in a toxic relationship for six years without even realizing it at the time, and I loved how good this theme was explored.
I really enjoyed their clover tradition and Melody’s nickname—Clover—and I was absolutely delighted by the red shoelaces storyline❤️
It was touching to see how the characters supported one another, how Zac respected Melody, and how careful he was not to cross her boundaries.
The book immediately captivated me, and it was fun to follow the characters during the camping trip (that muddy scene was so hot!). However, I felt like the situation with her brother dragged on a little, although Parker pleasantly surprised me in the end!
I can’t help but mention Noah—he’s my favorite side character! I felt so sorry for him, but it was heartwarming to see Zac always ready to lend him a hand.
It’s already been announced that the second book will be about Brooks, and I can’t wait to read it!

A huge thank you to NetGalley for this advanced copy! ⭐️ I liked it, but I can’t say I loved it. Honestly, it just felt too long. There were whole sections that could’ve been cut without losing the heart of the story, and it would’ve kept things moving a lot better.

I loved the beginning, the camping and getting stranded part was fun and felt pretty unique. I mean, as wild as it was to believe that their friends just up and left without noticing they were missing (seriously, how?!), I was into it. But once they got back home and things shifted to their day-to-day lives, it started dragging. It just got a bit boring and repetitive.

I tried to connect with Melody, but it just didn’t happen. I did appreciate her growth and how she rebuilt her confidence after a toxic relationship, and I loved how she found herself on her own. Zac helps her out but never steals the spotlight, quietly supporting her while she finds her footing again.

Zac was likeable enough, but he didn’t exactly sweep me off my feet, either. Their romance had sweet moments, but it felt a bit forced at times, and I blame that on the pacing of the story more than anything else because they had chemistry.

I wasn’t sold on the reason for their 10-year silence; it felt pretty weak. But hey, at least it didn’t lead to a third-act breakup, so I’ll take the win where I can.

On the bright side, the supporting characters were a lot of fun, and I loved the found family vibes. Those moments were heart-warming, and I’m definitely curious to learn more about their stories. But overall? It was just okay. Not bad, not great, just... fine.

Only in Your Dreams is book 1 in Ellie’s Oakwood Bay series. It’s a spicy, small town, brother’s best friend, second chance sports romance.

Melody returns home after 10 years, following a breakup, to put her self and her life back together. Unfortunately going home also means facing her childhood crush and biggest heartache - her brothers best friend, Zac.

This book heavily depends on miscommunication (or the lack of communication) and that isn’t always a hit for me but it worked here. Zac was so sweet and supportive of Melody and their chemistry was HOT. We start out with a wilderness forced proximity setup that was both spicy and funny. Watching them go from enemies to friends to lovers with all their banter and chemistry was .

I loved the friendships in this book, especially Zac’s friendship with Noah. Noah has a rough homelife and finds solace with Zac. It was so sweet how both Zac and Melody treated him like a younger sibling, giving him a safe place to call home. The side characters really added a lot to this book and I’m excited to see where the series goes from here.

When I learned the MMC’s name was Zac, I knew this book was kind of doomed from the start. I have personal issues with a guy with the same name and I could not stop picturing him whenever I saw the name in the book. I was reliving trauma that I did not sign up for🙅🏻‍♀️

Okay, that aside, this book was so boring. The story was unnecessarily long and I was tempted to DNF at 60%, but I pushed through (the things I do for a reading challenge🤦🏻‍♀️) The book did not get better though.

The FMC Melody annoyed me a lot. She acted like such a brat and I could not stand her. I did like how in love the male lead was with Melody, but it was a bit too much for me sometimes and it just became sort of creepy. The smut didn’t hit for me either. I was skimming those chapters.

The reason for them not getting together when they were teenagers was super weak as well. And so dumb! I mean really!?!? All the sneaking around came off as rather childish too. I mean these two were not subtle, so there was no point in hiding their relationship and doing this whole fake dating scheme, which was barely executed. There was also no tension or anything. They were acting like a couple from the start and the story just felt like filler. I did appreciate not having a third act break up, but that wasn’t enough to save the book for me.

Overall, this book was not for me and I’m glad that I’m done with it.

I FUCKING LOVED THIS BOOK!!! Are you kidding me right now?! The banter, the yearning, the love, the safe space, Noah, and omg, the reasons why they were stuck in that campsite to begin with? PLUS the absolutely filthy mouth Zac had? Honestly, it's just a perfect book!

10 years ago, Melody finally got the courage to tell her brothers best friend how she felt about him, only for him to essentially ghost her. She spent so long trying to get over him, and fell in the trap of an emotionally abusive asshole -- only she didn't see him for who he really was until he dumped her. Now she's back home for the first time since she left for college, rooming with her twin brother, and trying to figure out where she went so wrong. When Parker (her twin) pushes Mel to take his place on an annual friends camping weekend, she doesn't want to go. But when she comes face to face with the first man who broke her? Man, get ready for all the feels!

Zac. My main man Zac. I loved his sweet disposition underneath that growly exterior, and the way his heart BEAT for his girl. Yes, he let her get away all those years ago, but he's been a shell of a person ever since. But now the love of his life is back..and she wants nothing to do with him. Which he expected, but he will stop at nothing to prove to her that he loved her back then, that he loved her when she was gone, and that he'll love her always. JUST SWOON. I mean it was the little things-- the switching of the cheese less burger, the red strings, the clover tattoos, the lip balm, the shopping excursion, the playbook list, building her. fucking. dream. house, to the big things of building her back up after her ex dismantled all the confidence she had, and made her believe in herself again. And then continuing to grovel damn near the entire book, only for her to admit that she's just as in love with him as he is with her, and has been forever?! THE . TEARS.

And Noah -- sweet Noah. You just have to read to find out who he is, but I bawled at their makeshift little family and how imperfectly perfect they were.

This book definitely dealt with some heavy topics, but our author here didn't shy away from them, and handled them with such grace. She also had me laughing like crazy at how unhinged (in a good way!) Zac was in regards to his Clover, and like I said -- the bantering be bantering!

This is my first time reading this author, but it definitely won't be the last! She has a fan for life now!

3.9 stars! Okay okay let’s get into it. First off, this is a spicy one, folks. And it is probably a hard one to just skip spice altogether if you’re not a fan of spice, because convos and relationship development definitely happens during these scenes. It was a bit much for me which I’ll explain later but that’s honestly just personal preference. I really loved the writing style from this author, HOWEVER some of words she uses for her spicy scenes just give me the ick. Any time and I mean ANYTIME there was a spicy scene, she had to use the dreaded p word for a lady’s nether region. Some people are all about that but I feel like we already knew what was happening and it didn’t need to be said a bagillion times. There are just more fluid ways to refer to things haha but like I said to each their own! Another thing that I didn’t love was the constant nick name usage. Like it’s cute and such but also I like a mixture of real name in there more than once in a blue moon but it’s fiiiiine. The last thing was the whole not talking for 10 years. I just can’t see the MMC letting so much time go by with how strongly he felt about her. I get the reasoning or whatever but also as another reviewer said, it was a bit weak.
However. I loved the story. Some mention it was boring but I honestly liked the day to day and for once not having my heart totally ripped out 4/5ths of the way through, sometimes I need an easy ending okay?! And I really loved the background characters and I believe there will be even more from them in the future which I won’t be able to pass on.
Anyways. Definitely a talented author, my only qualms are legit just personal preference! Great story that I loved, it was cozy and good!! I’d definitely recommend it to my spice lover friends!
A big thanks to NetGalley and Atria Books for this ARC read!

Only in Your Dreams
by Ellie K Wilde

About the book 👇🏽

☘️ My thoughts:

This was spicier than I was expecting and I loved it! I held off on reading this until around St. Patrick’s Day purposely because of the clover theme. And the clover story is so dang sweet it’s bound to make you giddy and swoon. I am a sucker for a second chance romance and Wilde did not disappoint! Second chance… check. Forced Proximity… check. Brothers best friend… check. Swoony… check. Spice… also check. I could seriously go on about all the checked boxes in this one! I loved that as much as this was a fast paced lovable story, you get some real emotional moments too and overall a wonderful story that I’d recommend! This was so so good! I can’t wait to continue this series. Only in Your Dreams is out now!!

❓Do you do anything festive for St. Patrick’s Day? Wear green, drink green beer, maybe something else?

Happy reading 🍀📖☘️

Such a cute and spicy sports romance. I loved the real and emotional moments along with the characters and how much they cared. The fmc left her abusive ex and job she hated and moves back in with her brother and his friend Clark. She and Clark have history but because of miscommunication and things that happened in the past she thinks he does not like her.

There is so much forced proximity, yearning and tension between the characters and i loved how the mmc treated the fmc especially knowing about her horrible ex. This was also the fmc healing and coming back to herself after having to change for a man. This book is spicy with some steamy scenes 🤭. Overall i liked the romance and the its always been you vibes and i hope other characters get books. Thanks to Atria for this arc!
