This was my least favorite of the series.
Not enough Dottie and the laundry club ladies and the ending felt rushed.

With Dottie participating in a bass tournament, the remaining Laundry Club Ladies want to cheer her on. While the ladies attempted to locate the best place to watch Dottie they heard a gunshot. Thinking they witnessed a couple of poachers, Mae tried to follow the sound only to see a possible human victim. When one of the fishermen doesn’t show up at the end of the tournament they start looking for a missing person. Mae and the ladies want to help solve this case.

I love every visit to Normal, KY with Mae and the ladies. You know you are in for an entertaining cozy mystery full of twists and turns. This time was no exception. I was completely surprised by the final twist revealing the yreal killer and why. The characters are so fun, they have different backgrounds and jobs, but support one another and love solving a mystery. I definitely recommend this book as well as the series to all cozy mystery readers.

All thoughts and opinions are my own, I have not been influenced by anyone.

Another great book by Tonya Kappes. Planning on cheering on their friend Dottie and handyman Henry in the bass fishing tournament Mae and her friends hear a gunshot and thinking at first that someone was hunting illegally instead they see the body of a man on a gator heading away from them. As much as I would like to visit Normal, Kentucky with so many deaths in the quaint village, I would be afraid to be the next victim. When Mae is asked by the sheriff to help in the investigation, she agrees. Soon she is caught up in something more dangerous than she ever imagined. This entertaining series never fails to keep me engaged. I love Mae, the relationship she has with her husband, Hank and her best friends, the Laundry Club Ladies. This is my honest, voluntary review of an advanced reader copy of this book.

This was a fine story. Well written with lots of imagery built in to bring the setting and characters to life. It’s a fairly tame cozy mystery with quaint, likable characters, but as a reader, it never really “woke me up.”

This is a book well into the series, and the first book from the series I’ve read. I’m definitely interested in reading another, probably starting at the beginning where I’ll be introduced to the MC and all the important peripheral characters that other reviewers who’ve read the series seem to enjoy.

I listened to the audiobook and felt the narrator, Johanna Parker, did a very nice job reading the story in a sweet southern accent that did not detract from the narrative or come across too theatrical like some accents can feel.

It is hard to believe we are at book 36. I always enjoy a read with the Laundry Club Ladies. I love how I can still find happiness and laughter along with surprises from this series. I can always count on Dottie to say something funny. Hank and Mae’s relationship always warms my heart. The friendship from the Laundry Club Ladies makes me smile. I always feel like an honorary member. Waldo Willy is starting to grow on me. Yes, I was very shocked at this!! He really stepped up this time. The biggest surprise of all was the sheriff asking Mae for help… OFFICIALLY.

I cannot wait to see what is up next for the Laundry Club Ladies.

NOT BAD, NOT AMAZING!

PREMISE: So in this one Mae's friend Dotti ends up entering into a fishing contest. However at one stage Mae starts seeing things that don't seem to add up. That's when she discovers yet another dead body. The widow of the deceased taken under her wing, Mae sets out with her laundry club friends to solve the murder.

THOUGHTS: Honestly very average read. I don't enjoy anything about fishing, so that was a turn off. However, not too much later Mae and her mom go to a knitting group and that was extremely fascinating. The mystery was intriguing, but the reveal was a let down. All in all an average read.

3 Stars.

As this series goes along it gets better. The characters are as wonderful as always but the mysteries seem to be getting more complicated. This one is a good example. There is no way I was going to figure it out as it had an unusual conclusion.

I also think the books are more descriptive. They take me longer to read as I want to appreciate all the various nuances of the settings. I feel like I’m there in the Normal, Kentucky general area including the Daniel Boone Forest.

I was fortunate to receive an advanced copy of this enjoyable story. I’m looking forward to enjoying the next installment in this series.

Bonfires, Backbacks, & Brawls is book 36 in the "Campers and Criminals Cozy Mystery" series by Tonya Kappes. Dottie and Henry are in a fishing tournament, and while they are fishing and their friends are there to cheer them on, a body is spotted. Mae and the Laundry Club ladies are back to figuring out who did it. I just adore the laundry club ladies and enjoy visiting the campground world. My favorite part is when Dottie thinks that no one is catching on to how she feels towards a certain fellow. I always look forward to reading the next book in this series.

Springtime in Normal, Kentucky is so beautiful! Author Tonya Kappes paints amazing word pictures of just how gorgeous Normal and the Daniel Boone National Forest is, and these perfect, pre-summer days sound incredible. She also points out dichotomies of the forest, especially for newbies to the trails. While we see and inhale the rich scents of wildflowers, we are reminded that just beyond the flowers are steep cliffs. If one stops to smell the flowers, they need to be careful where they step. Beauty and danger can be hand in glove in the national forest.

I enjoyed seeing Mae and the Laundry Club Ladies again, all of them best friends who have each other’s backs in any situation. They are also avid sleuths who have helped solve many murders since Mae moved to Happy Trails Campground, given to her by her first husband. It was also fun to see their family and friends, and to meet people at Happy Trails who are in town for the tournament.

Dottie is determined to win the big prize in the bass fishing tournament, and has only one day to teach Mae how to catch fish. Using worms. Yuck. Mae wanted to enjoy it, knowing how much it meant to Dottie. After Henry, the handyman for Happy Trails, fished the besties out of the lake, he replaced Mae as Dottie’s partner.

The Laundry Club Ladies were going to the best spot by the lake from which to cheer for Henry and Dottie. The four of them took a shortcut through the woods, then heard a gunshot before they got to the lake. Hunting season is long over, so their first concern focused on who was poaching. They saw a Gator pass with a large piece of game on the back, covered in a blanket. The friends watched in horror as the Gator hit a bump, the blanket slipped, and a human hand dropped out.

Thankfully, Mae’s husband Hank was nearby and he hurried to the girls. Hank is given the case to work – he recently returned to a job he loves as a park ranger, but he wasn’t looking forward to a major case this soon. Before the day is over, however, they heard that Parker, one of the fishermen in the tournament, was missing. His boat was soon found, flipped over on the lake. The search intensified, and the missing man’s body was found in a shallow grave. He had been shot, and his widow was devastated.

The Laundry Club ladies are ready to meet and sleuth. What is different this time is that Al, the sheriff, invites Mae’s help in solving the crime. She is helping the widow, and gently tries to get what information she can from Cindy, first, then going to their friends in the community.

This was a perplexing case. Those with possible motive to kill Parker have alibis. Nobody felt right for the crime. The real bad guys caught up to Mae in the forest when she uncovered clues not found earlier. Whodunit was shocking, especially for the reason they shot him over, then were willing to murder again to avoid getting caught. I highly recommend this chilling mystery to fans of the author and series, those who enjoy Southern cozy mysteries, and for campers and armchair campers.

From a thankful heart: I received an uncorrected copy of this novel prior to publication, and this is my honest review.

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed. Mae and her friends hear a gunshot in the tranquil Daniel Boone Forest. It is not hunting season so they know the sound did not belong. Before too long they find out that someone has been murdered. Now the ladies will have to do some snooping to figure out who was killed and why.

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the story from the very beginning. Whether I was listening to Dottie talk about Henry or the Laundry Club Ladies pondering the current murder I was totally engaged in the story. The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The mystery is well plotted and not easily solved.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. If you are looking for a great southern cozy with great characters and intrigue, look no further.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book and provided my honest review.

I truly love every visit to Normal, Kentucky with the Laundry Club Ladies. I feel as if I know these characters personally. There is always a celebration going on in Normal, Kentucky. The newest celebration is a Bass Fishing Tournament. Everyone's favorite character, Dottie, and her special friend are contestants in the tournament. The Laundry Club Ladies want to show their support for Dottie. These ladies do nothing halfway. They decide to hoof it through the woods so they can get closer to the lakeside and show their support to Dottie. A shotgun blast halts their progress. They are sure it is a hunter who is hunting out of season, which means instead of running away, they want to find the culprit. (They also have no fear.) While hiding away they see a UTV leaving the woods with something covered up in the back. However, when a hand falls out from under the tarp, they know they have stumbled upon another mystery.

When a fisherman is reported missing and his body is found later in a shallow grave, they realize they were witnesses to this crime. However, they cannot give any kind of identification to the authorities. Never fear because Mae and company are on the job.

Red herrings are scattered all over the forest floor of this mystery. Tonya Kappes does a bang-up job of leading you astray as you try to solve this mystery along with the crew. The twists and turns will give you a case of whiplash. There seems to be danger around every turn as well. As always I close another case with the Laundry Club Ladies with a smile on my face knowing justice has prevailed once again in Normal, Kentucky.

Thank you to the author for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

It is unbelievable that this is the 36th book in the A Camper & Criminals Cozy mystery series since each book is a new adventure for Mae West, owner of Happy Trails Campground, Dottie and the rest of the Laundry Club Ladies. It is time for the annual Fishing Contest and Dottie and her husband Henry want to win. In an effort to support them, Mae and the rest of the laundry club ladies take a short cut through the woods to cheer them on. However, best laid plans go awry when on their way through the woods they hear a gunshot. It isn't hunting season, so the ladies are curious as to what that was all about. When one of the fishermen, Parker, is missing and his boat was found flipped over and he is found after a search in a shallow grave, Mae and the rest of the laundry ladies have a case to (snoop) investigate. Hank, Mae's husband has returned to his job as Forest Ranger and is put in charge of the case. But in the past, the ladies have helped to solve cases before. So with many twists and turns and suspects with alibis, can they find the murderer and the motive? This is another fast paced, page turning mystery that keeps you engaged to the very surprising ending! I highly recommend the entire series as well as this book. I received and ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

This series always makes me want to go camping or glamping. Daniel Boone National Forest seems like such a lovely and peaceful place, sans a murder every few months. Lol.

It’s cool how each character is like a real life person with individual unique personalities and traits. Dottie typically has a cigarette and sometimes pink curlers in her bright red hair. She’s also tough as nails, yet she has a soft and kind center. Queenie is always on the move, never spring still for too long. And you can bet you’ll learn new jazzercise moves from her soonafter meeting her. It’s neat getting to discover what each person will say or do next. Sometimes they surprise us!

How’s Bobby Ray anyway? We haven’t heard squat about him in the last few books except the mention of him being May-bell-ine’s adopted foster brother and Abby’s husband. I like him!

The murder in this one took a bit to solve, but the Laundry Club ladies and Wally were on the case and helped wrap it up! They were a bit tired up with false leads for awhile, but ultimately things were solved.

There’s always recipes at the end of each book. The recipes are foods to cook over a campfire. There’s also RV hacks and other camping hacks at the ends of each book. It’s really cool.

Next is Book 37 of 39: “Fireworks, Freedom, and Felonies.”

Big fishing tournament ahead! The Daniel Boone National Park Bass fishing tournament is about to start with a big money prize for the biggest bass! While Dottie hopes Mae will be her lucky partner, it turns out that fishing might be the one thing Mae is not cut out for! When Dottie and Henry enter the competition, Mae and her amazing group of friends are off to support them. On the way to cheer them on, they hear a gunshot and see a body being hauled off. It isn’t long before someone comes forward because her husband is missing from the competition. Sadly, the body turns up and he didn’t drown, he was murdered. Witnesses also saw the murder victim arguing with his biggest competition. Seems like there are a lot of fishy things going on for Mae and her unwavering group of laundry ladies is on the case to find the murderer. On top of solving this one, Mae has an unexpected offer from the Sheriff! It’s been a long time coming! You’ll keep turning the page to get to the end of this one! Lots of good suspects and red herrings to keep you wondering until the end! I am not required to leave a review.

Bonfires, Backpacks, & Brawls is another exciting installment in Kappes' camper and criminals cozy mystery series. I always look forward to each new installment in this series. Mae and the Laundry Club ladies are excited about cheering on Dottie and Henry in Normal's Bass tournament. On their way to find their way to find the perfect spot to cheer her on, the ladies hear something disturbing. Trying to get back in the spirit of the tournament after reporting what they heard, the ladies are shocked to discover that one person competing in the tournament is missing.

Kappes does a great job at setting up an entertaining story. I especially liked how the reader finally got to discover some of Dottie's own interests in this story. I also love the Mae and Hank dynamic now that they are married and Hank is a ranger again. The book is full of enough twists and turns to keep the reader's interest from start to finish. Overall Bonfires, Backpacks, & Brawls is a great read that I would most definitely recommend. I look forward to Mae's next adventure.

Bonfires, Backpacks & Brawls is the thirty-sixth cozy mystery in Camper & Criminals series. When the Boy Scouts are holding a fishing contest in town, everything is expected to be peaceful, but the gunshot shattering the silence says otherwise. Going in search of the noise, Mae and the Laundry Club Ladies stumble across a dead body. Unable to let this mystery lie, Mae and her friends get to work sleuthing out the truth before a killer strikes again.

I love this whole series and can’t get enough of it. Each book seems to get better than the last and I never want to end. This mystery is fast paced and fun, short read that was easy to get through. The town and characters in this series are great and I love revisiting them in each installation. The twists and turns in this mystery kept me hooked on the story and guessing until the very end. I can’t wait to see what comes next for Mae and the gang! If you are a fan of cozy mysteries and are in the mood for a good, quick mystery this book is worth checking out. The mysteries don’t need to be read in order in this series to be enjoyable so don’t be afraid to pick it up now!

While taking a shortcut through the woods to cheer on Dottie and Hank in a fishing tournament, the Laundry Club Ladies hear a gunshot and think they will come up on a poacher. When they see a Gator utility vehicle driving away and see a hand flop out, they know they have stumbled on a murder. Now they need to figure out who it was and how the person died.

Eventually they figure out the dead person was a competitor in the fishing contest and the suspects were pretty slim this time around. I liked how Mae joined forces with Waldo Willy on this case, more than she normally does. Ellis had an interesting twist in her life that made you like her a little more (she is a little annoying).

While the suspect pool was small, the killer was a complete surprise and that was fun. As usual, Normal, Kentucky with its residents and the Laundry Club Ladies draw you in and made me want to visit.

It's Springtime in the Normal, Kentucky and time for the annual Bass Fishing Tournament. Mae and the Laundry Club Ladies are headed to the lake to cheer on Dottie and Henry when they hear a gunshot in the woods. Hank is working as a Park Ranger in the Daniel Boone National Forest and they report what they heard to him to investigate. When one of the contestants goes missing the Ladies are concerned and the mystery begins. I love all of the wonderful descriptions of Normal and the Daniel Boone National Forest and the relationships between Mae and the other characters. I can't wait for the next book in the series to read about the baby shower for Ellis and what happens next in the beautiful small town of Normal, Kentucky.

“Just savoring the peace because something in the milk ain’t clean”

The Daniel Boone National Park Bass Fishing Tournament will be taking place. Dottie has entered herself and Mae. Dottie may like fishing, worms and all, but Mae is not exactly thrilled. Dottie is hoping Mae will be her partner. Well, fishing and Mae not likely to happen.
The Laundry Club Ladies go to cheer on Dottie and Henry. On their walk to the lake, a shortcut through the woods they hear a gun shot and see a body being taken away.
Mae and the Ladies are on the case!
Fun, entertaining mystery with twists. Every visit back to Happy Trails Campground feels like spending time with family and friends.

Mae and the Laundry Club Ladies are on their way to the lakeshore to cheer Dottie and Henry on during the Bass Fishing Tournament when they hear a gunshot. What they thought had to be poachers hunting out of season turns out to be a murder instead. But who would have wanted the man dead, and why? Who knew bass fishing was such a cutthroat sport? Mae and her team will leave no stone unturned to solve the mystery.

Twists, turns, surprises, individuals going on the suspect list and coming back off just as fast when their alibis check out, and more! Dottie’s acting a little strange lately and Ellis has a bit of a scare.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Let me start by saying you can start here with this book or at the beginning of the series, either way you won't be sorry. This is not a rehash of the story and there are no spoilers.
Another entertaining cozy mystery featuring Mae West and the Laundry Ladies. There is no shortage of laugh-out-loud moments, twists and turns to keep you guessing and there are even a few opportunities to yell out your favorite southern saying. The characters are colorful and likable and the stories are easy to follow, this one being no exception. The center of this mystery takes place at a bass tournament, and since spring is in the air you'll also find some extra descriptiveness woven into the story.
Overall, great book, I highly recommend it (as well as all the others).

This series just keeps getting better and better. With this one, it was hard to guess the killer. Mae and her crew just wanted to cheer on Dottie and Henry in a fishing tournament, but, of course, they run across a murder. This time Mae didn't find the body, but they heard the shot and thought it was a poacher in the forest. Turns out it was one of the fishermen. Mae is helping the man's widow and letting her stay at the campground during the investigation. Mae can't believe that Cindy would kill her husband, but who could do that? As she and the other ladies investigate, it only brings up more questions. Who could do this? Is it one of the other fishermen, or someone connected to the tournament? Mae won't give up until she knows the answer.

There is a bass fishing tournament happening in Normal Kentucky. Dottie and Henry have entered the competition. Mae and the Laundry Ladies are there to support them. They take a shortcut through the woods and hear a gunshot. Shortly afterwards they see two people in a Gator with something covered in the back. As they hit a bump a hand flops out. Later that day a woman reports her husband missing. He was also in the competition and never returned. A boat is found capsized. Mae and her friends are on the case. Can they find the missing man and solve the mystery? The more they investigate, the more motives they find. Enjoy all the antics as they solve the case.

Oh this one was good, i loved to see Dottie like that a real competitor and a secret , not so secret, lover, she definitively make you laugh

During a bass tournament, a person does missing and Mae and the girls want to help even more after stumbling on something strange in the wood.are the two events linked? It does not matter, in Normal when someone is in need you help and that's what the group is doing when for once Mae is asked officially to help investigating.

I really loved the mystery and the twists so well balanced with teh touch of romance and family and friendship bonds making the characters even more lovable.

an excellent cozy mystery as always
