This would make a really fun series!

I loved how it read like an old school sci-fi, but had some fun twists and turns.

Note: I was provided with a free copy of the book to review.

This take on the myth was creative and felt like what one might see as a stand-alone episode of a sci-fi show: while traveling through space, the characters make a stop on a planet (or a moon, in this case) and encounter an adventure there. The worldbuilding did not get bogged down with unnecessary details. The characters could have been developed a bit more; Maze is more driven by plot than character. As for the art style, I personally struggled to connect with it, especially in terms of the character design and action/movement. But I also read a lot of manga and so I am used to that particular style of character design. Overall, Maze was a creative graphic novel with a message of doing the right thing even when it is dangerous, and I can see its appeal for children who like science fiction.

Simple and sweet, Maze takes the classic story of Theseus and the Minotaur and gives it an alien-centric, laser-gun-laced, out-of-this-world spin. With delightful illustrations and an engaging, fast-paced storyline, this graphic novel is creative and easy to follow. While I didn't grow as attached to the characters as I would have liked, the story is compact and intended to be more action-focused, so it fulfills its goals admirably! Every frame counts and adds layers of subtext and character mannerisms to enhance the plot. For kids who love Greek mythology, stories told through artwork, sci-fi, action-driven tales, or all of the above, Maze could fit the bill perfectly!

* Many thanks to the author for sending me a free digital copy of Maze in exchange for my honest review! All thoughts and opinions are my own. *

The author's creative liberties breathe new life into the classic story while retaining its core essence. A bit more exploration of character emotions and motivations could enhance the story further. Overall, a captivating reinterpretation that pays homage to the original tale.

3.5 stars (3/10 hearts). I am a big fan of retellings, so I was definitely interested in this minotaur retelling! I liked how it kept original elements while totally redoing the story at the same time, which isn’t as easy to do as it looks. I haven’t read much sci-fi (if any) but this was interesting and well explained, and the story was surprisingly deep. I really like how it brought out a message of duty/responsibility and personal morality. A good, clean adventure for younger readers but with plenty to offer older readers as well.

It may be meant for kids, but it's interesting enough for the adults, too. The story is very straightforward and doesn't bother with details, allowing it to stick to the primary plot and action. What other reason do you need to kill a monster, other than it's a monster?

I received a free e-book copy of this story from the author in exchange for a review.

This was a very enjoyable short graphic novel that reminded me of a Love, Death, and Robots episode!
The drawings were awesome and very easy to understand/follow. Overall it was very simple but well done!

It's targeted at Middle-Grade ages, and I'm 16 and still found it engaging and exciting.
I would love to see this turn into a series following Sima's adventures in space!

My one critique and hope for the (maybe) next ones is that there will be a little bit more focus on character development and relationships!
The relationship between Sima and his bodyguard Lanard is awesome and I hope to see it developed further!

Can't wait to see what E.B. Roshan does next!!

I vaguely remember the Greek story this was based on, but the story opens with a much needed recap. It was also a very fun choice to use an octopus in place of a Minotaur. This story is set in space with aliens and royalty to boot.

The story takes itself seriously despite the wacky designs of the world’s inhabitants. A serious toll is continually paid to keep the maze running. Serious drama here and no one is playing haha, but it’s not gruesome or scary for younger readers. It’s just a matter of fact. Like, a knight who has to kill a dragon to save the kingdom.

I liked the relationship between Sima and his bodyguard Lanard, who is resigned to his fate to watch over this reckless young man. Surly character with a soft spot is some of my favorite tropes. In addition, the bit of depth given to the Maze princess's feelings was nice and acknowledged it’s not always that easy to let go of a problematic thing/place you love.

Concerning the artwork, the panels are easy to follow and has a good variety of images. It’s not just talking heads back to back. The color scheme is grayscale without shading. Sometimes, you could see too many words crammed into a speech bubble, but for the most part, the artwork worked fine.

"Maze" by E.B. Roshan is a captivating fusion of classical Greek mythology and futuristic science fiction that propels readers into an enthralling adventure. In this inventive reimagining of the Minotaur's labyrinth, the author takes us on a journey through a world where rockets, robots, ray guns, and a colossal alien squid converge to create a mesmerizing and wholly unique narrative.

Roshan's masterful storytelling shines as the traditional tale of Theseus and the Minotaur is seamlessly blended with cutting-edge technology and extraterrestrial intrigue. The narrative's fusion of past and future is nothing short of brilliant, presenting a vivid and imaginative landscape that propels readers into uncharted territory.

The characters are richly developed, each with their own distinct charm and depth, as they navigate the maze's enigmatic passages and confront the awe-inspiring and at times terrifying elements of this futuristic world. The plot unfolds with an impeccable sense of pacing, delivering a rollercoaster of tension, excitement, and discovery.

What truly sets "Maze" apart is its ability to evoke a sense of wonder and amazement. The author's vivid descriptions and skillful world-building allow readers to immerse themselves fully in this amalgamation of classical and science fiction elements. The result is a tale that is both intellectually stimulating and emotionally resonant.

Overall, “Maze" by E.B. Roshan is an extraordinary achievement in storytelling, weaving together mythology and science fiction in a manner that is bound to leave a lasting impact on readers. It's a must-read for anyone who craves a unique and spellbinding narrative that pushes the boundaries of imagination.

This awesome graphic novel is perfect for myth and sci-fi lovers. With a Lovecraftian style cover (but far from being scary) great for all ages, from younger readers reluctant to read to comic fans.

Maze is a retelling of a Greek myth. The myth of the Minotaur and the Labyrinth but set in futuristic deep space. It plunges us into a galactic first-contact mission and adventure. Sima, the Master's Fleet son (who is in command of Arrow), and his most trustful adviser Lanard are about to land on a frozen moon, but not all is peaceful. The people living here are slaves to the whims of a monster living under their thin ice... Like Theseus before, Sima decides to take matters into his hands and defeat the monster.

The characters are interesting and make me want to see more adventures and find new cultures. We already get that Sima has a strong personality and is used to doing as he pleases but with great results. I like the Queen very much. She is very brave and humble.

With awesome Star Trek vibes, this fast-paced episode has a great rhythm, and storytelling and the art is simple but always consistent. The design of the pages is well done and we always know which is the next panel and the right direction to follow. Great rhythm in the design of the pages and great use of the monochromatic as well for tension and excitement.

I appreciate that the author added notes on the original Greek myth letting us know the original story first for those who have never heard of such a tale.

Age 9 Up—This stand-alone graphic novel plucks the Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur and relocates it to an isolated recharging station housed on an icy moon in space. An Author’s Note in the beginning of the graphic novel summarizes the original myth for readers who are less familiar with the story. The plot tracks closely to the original tale, but has been infused with robots, spaceships, and a swirling octopoid monster at the heart of the maze that leads to some delightful artistry in the panels along the way.

The spare black and white illustrations in Maze are well-suited for reading in ebook format. Neither the illustrations nor the paneling is overly complicated. Readers are never in doubt which panel to read next.

The storyline itself is more driven by plot than character, perhaps to be expected in a graphic novel, which aside from its unusual setting, is intended to be a close retelling of the original myth. Readers familiar with the story of the Minotaur will find few surprises here.

The lettering is neatly done in a clear, legible font. The language is straightforward, making this graphic novel a good choice for sci-fi fans still developing their reading skills. At $1.99 at the time of this review, Maze is an affordable and fun after-school companion for a fall afternoon.

This is actually my first time reading a graphic novel, and I really enjoyed it! (I see why they are so popular lol.)

From the first page, I knew I was going to like the MC, Sima, and of course his friend Lanard. Because it was a different book format than what I was used to, it took a minute for my brain to figure out what was going on (but that's on me). Once I understood the backstory, I really got into the book, eager to see what would happen. I liked how the illustrations brought the story to life; I was seeing it all played out like a movie in my head (speaking of movies, it kinda gave me some Star Wars/Star Trek vibes, which I loved). The world building was unique and well-done; it's loosely inspired by the Greek story of the Minotaur, so I enjoyed seeing how the author put her own spin on it.

I would love to see a full colored version, if that's possible. Either way, I think this would be a fun book for kids who are into sci-fi stories. Now my only complaint? Well, I want a sequel! The story had a happy ending, but I still want more adventures with Sima! (Excuse me while I petition the author to consider one *lol*).

Roshan created a story here that you can enjoy on your own, or read with a child and enjoy even more. This is just...so good. The plot here is one that could've fueled a much bigger story, but I'm glad she chose to tell it through a graphic novel medium. The art is really fun and easy to get lost in without getting distracted. I really loved the designs of the characters and the way they made their expressions. I could see myself having a lot of fun pointing them out while reading out loud. The story is told through their dialogue. This makes it a quick read, with the accessible language and simple art, but the plot is really good. It surprised me at times. I am a HUGE sci-fi lover, and this take on the minotaur and the maze was so delightful. I'm excited about this book. I think it's one people should look into picking up when it releases.

I don't know if you recognise the author's name or read my review on her recent historical novella, but I said on that review that I would love to read her other works if I could, and despite my mostly negative thoughts on that story, she was gracious enough to let me read more of her works, for free too, including her new graphic novel, Maze. All this to say, I knew that my personal preferences got in the way of loving her last story, there was nothing truly wrong with that story, and I'm so thankful to the author for giving me another chance.

Because I LOVED this graphic novel!

The artwork was so cute and fun. It was simple, perfect for those starting MG.

The story surprised me how it was both mature and safe for a younger audience. It talked about human sacrifice and how people justified it because of survival, selfishness, fear and unwillingness to let go of a place they call home. It was a deep theme, and showed how heroism is about standing up for what is right and good. Standing up even though it offends other people, standing up even though leads to death.

I love seeing a protagonist who is so determined to set things right that he is blinded to the consequences. He isn't perfect in his approach to the issue, but he isn't less right. He is almost naïve. It was refreshing to see one so sincere and innocent, while also being willing to speak up and fix the evil himself.

The worldbuilding, characters and plot were perfectly interwoven together. Nothing felt out of place or thrown in.

Overall, I highly recommend checking out Maze if you're looking for a quick graphic novel read, a MG with a deep theme, or a space adventure with the classic hero. Definitely think it can be enjoyed by both children and adults.

Super fun! The story is a cross between sci-fi and Greek Mythology. Though geared toward kids, as an adult, I enjoyed it as a quick and lighthearted read.
