A small town, single dad, enemies to lovers romance.
Crawling back to this small town was never in hockey star Chase Woodson’s plans. From hitting hockey pucks in front of thousands to selling urinal pucks at his father’s hardware store, coming back home is his worst nightmare. But being a (newly) single dad of twin boys means making sacrifices. His boys need stability and his dad needs his help in the store. Now he needs her Except, Chase has been the bane of Madison Kelly’s existence since high school. She just so happens to be the only available nanny in town. Besides, high school was ten years ago. People don’t hold grudges that long, right?
Marie James is a mother of two boys and wife of 17 years. She's spent most of her life lifetime living in central Texas, with only short stays in South Carolina, Alabama, and Florida. Her passions include reading everything under the sun and sewing, although she doesn't get to sew much these days!.
Writing has always been a passion and she's enjoying every step of the journey!
I wanted to love this book. I liked it, don't get me wrong. I loved the way Chase is with his children. He is attentive and very protective, and with good reason.
Madison is who I didn't jive well with. I just felt like she was being the woe is me. It got on my nerves a little. I liked how she dealt with Chase and his overbearing ways. She really was precisely who Chase needed, and the boys, too.
The twins were cute. I never felt like the author forgot about the kids, as some authors tend to do.
I loved Sebastian York as our narrator and we had a lot of Chase's POV, his was even the first which I loved.
4 Star Review of Back Against The Wall (Lindell #1) by Marie James I love stories set in small towns and Lindell had some quirky entertaining characters who I hope to see in future books in this series. Back Against The Wall is single dad to twins and ex professional hockey player Chase Woodson and Madison Kelly’s story and it was an entertaining, well written story. I really liked Chase, particularly his interaction with his twin sons who he has sole custody off. His ex-wife was a nasty piece of work who I couldn’t stand. I had a harder time relating to Madison who frustrated me with her behaviour, although I did love the relationship that she forged with the boys, that was heartwarming. The chemistry between Chase and Madison was intense and it was entertaining to watch their relationship develop. Looking forward to reading more in the Lindell series.
I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads, so here is my review. Chase Woodson lost his NHL career when the team he played for let him go. And on top of that, he is suddenly a single dad and headed back to his hometown. Chase never thought he would be back home, but now that he is, he needs a nanny for his twin boys. Madison Kelly left for the big city of Austin to make her dreams come true. When it all goes south, she lives with her parents back home. She never forgave Chase for something that happened when she was in 8th grade. Now Chase needs her to care for his twin boys. Can she accept without falling for him? Will Chase figure out what he did to make her hate him all those years ago? I enjoyed this story, it was filled with pain from both characters' past, new love, funny and great twins, and a town filled with meddling people who want to see them together. If you are looking for a good and enjoyable story, you need to read this one.

If you know this author you know she kills it with her Cerberus MC men and now she has given us something just as good but in another genre. When life changes bring Chase and Madison back to their hometown, they each have something the other needs. Chase needs a nanny for his twins and Madison needs a job so they need to get over their past.
What a great book and I loved the small-town romance theme. I can admit that I always look forward to this author’s books.
The storyline kept you going waiting for them to realize whats right in front of them. While I loved the story, I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. Madison has a way of messing things up for herself. Thier lack of communication with each other about anything is terrible. I absolutely loved the story but it definetly needed more context with it. The title is missleading, i never felt like once did either of them get themselves into a situaiton that they couldn't easily get out of with communication. 3 stars.

Can you forgive the boy, now man, that stood you up years ago? Apparently not. Madison and Chase grew up together and after Chase stood her up, Madison has never forgiven him. Fast forward 10 years later and they're both back in Lindell, TX to get their lives back together. Chase needs a nanny for his twins, and Madison needs a job! Will these two put the past behind them from years ago, even though one of them doesn't even remember, and the betrayal and heartbreak from previous relationships to finally realize they were meant to be or will they let the past come between them? I was so excited when I heard about the new series, Marie James is an amazing author and her characters are wonderful!!.

Why does Chase's only choice for help have to be the one woman who hates him - Madison? He's still not sure what he ever did to Madison back in the day, but she's despised him for years. But he's back home now since finding his ex cheated on him with his teammate, and he's been let go, so he has to come home and take care of his dad and their hardware store. He needs a nanny for his kids, even if he doesn't like asking for help. If he's going to hire Madison, they need rules. And he's going to make damn sure they follow them!
Madison too is back home after experiencing a serious betrayal. The last person she wants or expects, to see, is her nemesis, Chase. But when he offers an obscene amount of money to nanny his kids, she has to accept, so she can get out of the mess her ex left her with. Chase says there are rules, she can abide by them, right? Or can she, when she realizes the misinformation she's been dealing with all these years?
One word - communication!!! Chase and Madison's relationship is filled with mis and non-communication, and I wanted to smack them both for it. But their chemistry is strong enough, beneath the surface of their antagonism, to get over these problems. I like this small town, enemies-ish to lovers story, and am definitely looking forward to the next couple to fall in love.

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆ This is the first in a new series, and I am going to be looking out for the next one, for sure. I enjoyed the mix of ex-NFL worldliness, big city careers, and the return to small town reality that both the leads experience. That dichotomy of which is the best place to be, and the reasons why, is something that many of us understand, or others crave.
Chase finds himself home looking after his twin boys after a messy split from his less than motherly wife. Madison is home because she trusted the wrong man and he destroyed her business as well as her confidence. Neither is happy about being 'home' and neither is dealing well with thoughts of how the future may play out. These things even the playing field in a really clever way, and ensure that there is both dislike due to them being the same sex as their betrayer, but also empathy for the wrongs they have suffered – not that either explains that for quite a while!
I enjoyed this for its humour and for the inevitability of their relationship even if there are some entertaining twists and turns. An easy read with hints as to future installment leads... Madison's best friend definitely has to straighten out her BFF arrangement soon!

Chase Woodson was an NHL superstar until his team told him they were replacing him with a younger player and he caught his wife sleeping with his teammate and ex-boyfriend. Now he is ready to head home with his twin boys and become a single parent after he discovers that his ex-wife’s affair led to one child almost dying.
Madison Kelly had a crush on her older neighbor Chase for years but after he stands her up in high school he is on the top of her list of people she doesn’t like. When her ex-boyfriend swindles her company out of money she has no choice but to move home into her parents house until she can figure out a way to get back on her feet and pay them back.
When Chase discovers there is really no one in town to nanny his boys but Madison will he take the chance and will she adhere to the rules he lays out? Can they keep things strictly platonic when both have been burned in the past?
This was a good book and I enjoyed it although I didn’t always love Madison’s character.
Chase had been burned badly and his ex-wife, Erica, was awful. She was so self-centered and all she wanted to do was get the most amount of money out of Chase that she could and move on with her new boyfriend, Cory. Chase loved his boys more than anything so he knew the best thing he could do for them was move home to be around his father and get help and raise them in his hometown.
Madison was taken advantage of badly by her ex-boyfriend and had to begin again. She almost seemed to good for her hometown as she never kept in touch with anyone and upon returning she only got reacquainted with one friend. She hated Chase but soon realized that the amount of money he was offering her to nanny his boys would be stupid to turn down.
There was a lot of chemistry between Chase and Madison but both needed to keep it professional for their own reasons. Chase didn’t want anything at all to jeopardize his divorce and his custody of the boys. Madison couldn’t get over her hatred for Chase and was worried from her last boyfriend. Yet both really struggled with how they felt with the other.
There were some great little twists and I hated that Madison viewed herself so much different than she judged others. When it was clear that Madison made a mistake with what was overheard she viewed it one way and never apologized on how things could have been interpreted yet she sees a picture of Chase and right away assumes the worst and doesn’t check with him. There were other instances as well that just put her out there as a little entitled and immature.
When things went sideways I liked who got involved and how everything ended.
Fired from his pro hockey team, Chase Woodson didn't think his day could get any worse . . . that was until he walked in on his best friend and teammate having sex with his wife while his young sons were left unsupervised by the pool. Now he is back home in the small town he tried to leave behind, and working in his father's hardware shop.
Madison Kelly had a job she loved, and a fiance . . . until he stole from her clients and left her to deal with the fallout. Now she is back in the small town she tried so hard to leave behind after highschool. And she needs a job so she can move out of her parent’s house.
When Chase asks Madison to be a nanny for his twins, she doesn't want to say yes. She doesn't like him and hasn't since highschool. But she is desperate. But even though they may not like each other, that doesn't mean they can keep their hands to themselves . . . But there is a thin line between love and hate and Madison and Chase are both about to find that out the hard way!
Coming back home after perceived failure is always a hard pill to swallow, and both Chase and Madison are stuck navigating a present they never saw for themselves. Chase is a great dad but is struggling with his wife and best friend’s betrayals. He doesn't trust easily any more, which causes immediate tension with Madison. Madison is heart broken and knows Chase has the power to break her worse than her fiance did. Opening up to him isn’t easy, and when that trust is broken, it won’t be easy to salvage anything between them. What opens them both to heartbreak again is their inability to communicate with and trust one another. There are so many crossed wires and missed communications causing their feelings to be trampled on as both feel used and betrayed.
Amidst the relationship woes, Chase’s twins are completely adorable, and alone with his Dad, steal the show! I honestly adored his brand of manipulation, since it was all out of love for Chase. Adalynn as Madison’s best friend was also a highpoint and I cannot wait for her story, which is coming up next!
Back Against the Wall was a great start to this series and I’m loving seeing all this small town has to offer, quirks and all, through Marie James’ eyes! 4 stars!
From being famous for playing hockey to working at his father’s hardware store, the last place Chase ever thought he’d find himself was crawling back to his hometown. Thanks to his ex cheating on him, sacrifices have to be made. His kids need stability and what they really need is Madison. Unfortunately for Chase, he’s been the bane of Madison’s existence for as long as he can remember, and it just so happens, that Madison is the only nanny in town…
I thought this book was an okay read. I was intrigued by Madison in the beginning. She just returned to her hometown after having the rug pulled out from under her by her ex. She was desperate for a change and a fresh start. The last thing she ever expected was to find herself working for Chase. Chase was a good father who wanted the best for his boys. He’s definitely a work in progress, but has a lot of potential.
Madison and Chase definitely rocked the enemies-to-lovers trope. I thought they had good chemistry and there were some really great moments where their relationship/connection shined like true partners. Even though they started off as enemies-to-lovers, I do feel like their story rocked a pretty insta-love vibe as well. The reason I say that is because I felt like their romance took off at warp speed. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE a good insta-love romance and I LOVE a fast-paced story, but I think for these two, their story was a little too fast-paced. Some things felt glossed over and unresolved.
My other issue was the twins, Cale & Cole. We truly only got a few glimpses of them and not nearly enough time of them with Madison. Don’t get me wrong, I do think the twins were cute, but if I’m being honest, they felt like an afterthought when they should have played a bigger role in the story.
Overall, I think Back Against the Wall is going to be a hit for some and unfortunately, a miss for others. And for me, it was an okay read. The characters were likable and their story was entertaining, I was just left wanting more.

This was a really awesome book. Its also my first book that I have read by this author. It has several tropes like second chance, nanny and boss, single dad, small town, former childhood neighbors, close proximity and hate to love.
Madison has hated her old neighbor, Chase Woodson since she was in 8th grade. He is the town superstar, because he left town to be a NHL player, married a model and had two adorable kids. Until things fall apart for him and he comes home.
Madison has also moved home but its killing her. She needs her own place because her parents are very amorous. When she hears that Chase is hiring and is very desperate for help with his twins, she applies but only if its live in, so she can escape her parents.
And so the fun begins. I LOVED Madison and I adored Chase and his twins are so much fun. I am not sure the hate to love was really here. I think it was more he irritated her, and I was glad it was not more than that because why she didn't like him was kinda silly, after all the years had gone by.
I really enjoyed this story and getting to know everyone in Lindell. I was totally rooting for this couple because I could really feel their attraction and connection. There is a break up near the end and I wish that Chase had done more groveling and Madison had been less forgiving. But I also loved them together and I really loved this story.
TIPS When I opened the book, it mentioned that there is a prequel book that is free, so I downloaded and read it first. While this book stands alone, I definitely suggest you read the prequel (Foot in the Door) because some characters are mentioned from the first book.
As I read the book, some things are mentioned that happened at Kalen's wedding (he is a main character in the prequel) and I wanted the details on that. I messaged the author and she said they happened during her Cerberus MC series in the 28th book, Legacy. So if you have questions like I did, you will find them in Legacy.
BACK AGAINST THE WALL is the first instalment in Marie James’ contemporary adult LINDELL erotic, romance series . This is former professional hockey player Chase Woodson, and interior designer Madison Kelly’s story line.
Told from dual first person perspectives (Madison and Chase)BACK AGAINST THE WALL follows the building but acrimonious relationship between our story line couple. Madison Kelly has returned to her home town of Lindell, Texas with her proverbial tail tucked between her legs in desperate need of a job but Madison never expected to come face to face with the bane of her existence, newly single father Chase Woodson. Chase’s hockey career is done; he caught his wife with another man; and he too, has returned to his home town. Struggling to do it all, Chase needs to hire a nanny for his twin boys, and his only hope is our story line heroine. What ensues is then building but tempestuous relationship between Chase and Madison, and the fall out as several misunderstandings, and things said in anger, threaten the future for our story line couple.
The world building focuses on the miscommunication, misunderstandings, anger and hatred between our story line couple. Chase returned to Lindell in the wake of betrayal, and his inability to trust threatens any hope with the woman who has stolen his heart.
The relationship between Madison and Chase is belligerent and caustic. Madison blames Chase for ruining her teenaged years, and Chase’s fame makes him a target , and Madison is about to pay for his inability to trust. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top sexually graphic language and text .
We are introduced to Madison’s parents, her friend Adalynn: Cash Tucker, Sheriff Hudson, as well as Chase’s ex, his father Henry, and Chase’s sons Cole and Cale.
BACK AGAINST THE WALL is a story of misunderstandings and miscommunication, betrayal, forgiveness, acceptance and love. The premise is captivating, dramatic and intense; the romance is seductive and provocative; the characters are energetic and charismatic.
Disclaimer: I received this book at no cost from the publisher/author. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. I am leaving a voluntary review and all opinions are my own.
The tropes in this book really drew me in. The combination of small-town, single dad, and enemies-to-lovers was too great of a mix not to pass up.
Marie James knows how to craft a great story. Her writing style was easygoing and fresh. I felt an instant kinship with her storytelling. The plot of the story was exciting and riveting. All of the tropes in the story were executed brilliantly. I was hooked to the pages the entire time.
These characters were entertaining. They had complex backgrounds that gave them a lot of depth. They had distinct voices that made them stand out. I loved the dynamics between the characters. Chase's twins added something special to the story. The secondary characters were so compelling.
I loved the angsty tension between Madison and Chase at the start. Their history together made things interesting. There was a lot of miscommunication between the two of them but their chemistry was intense. In the end, they fit perfectly.
Overall, this was a satisfying and well-crafted small-town romance that brightened my day. The characters were memorable, the plot was addictive, and the storytelling was polished and relatable. I am looking forward to the next book in this series!
Back Against the Wall is book one in the new Lindell series by Marie James. It’s a small town, single dad, enemies to lovers, nanny tropes. We first get glimpses of this town and characters in her Cerberus MC series.
Chase Woodson was living the dream as a professional hockey player, until he suddenly found himself not living it. Betrayed by his cheating wife, almost losing one of his twin boys because of her negligence, and getting cut from his team will make anyone go crawling back home with his tail tucked between his legs. Madison thought she had everything…thriving interior design business and a loving fiance, until she didn’t. Her loving fiance turned out to be a cheating ba$tard who stole from her clients and cleaned out her bank account leaving her with nothing and facing criminal charges. She finds herself back in the one place she never wanted to be again…back in her small hometown, jobless with no fiance and living with her parents. The absolute last thing she ever thought she would be is working for the one man she hated more than anything…Chase Woodson. The man who broke her heart in junior high school.
I really wanted to love this story so much, but I just couldn’t. Don’t get me wrong, I liked it, but I absolutely couldn’t stand Madison. She got on my last nerve. I get that she was tremendously burned and she loathed Chase because of something that happened in junior high, but to me, her character seemed very juvenile and immature most of the time and she had a tremendous chip on her shoulder where Chase is concerned. I did, however, enjoy her relationship with his twin boys. Cale and Cole were definitely an added bonus to the story. My heart broke for them for their situation with their own mother, who, by the way, is an absolute piece of $h!t.
This story does come with some great side characters that I hope get their own stories, especially Adalynn and Cash. These two are so in love with each other, but refuse to cross the friends line. I can’t wait for their story.
I'm a huge fan of Marie James' books and when she introduced Lindell, Texas I was excited for the series. She writes wonderful characters, gritty, but entertaining stories that pull you in from the beginning and holds on until the end of the book. You hate for it to end because you want so much more of the characters. Even when their story is done.
Back Against the Wall was no different. While it's not a post military, black ops, or MC story, it has the wonderful characters that I love Marie James for as well as the fun small town of Lindell, Texas that knows everyone's business and the meddling that goes along with that. The business names are funny, the towns folk are quirky, and nosey.
Chase and Madison have both returned home after moving away and starting their lives in larger towns. Now that their back home in their small home town of Lindell, they are under the scrutiny of the towns folk as well as their own parents. Chase came home to lick his wounds from a career that has ended as well as his marriage. With two young sons to raise and the hardware store his family has run for years, he has to find a way to make a new life, yet protect his sons from their mischief and curiosity. His father suggests hiring someone to help him with the boys and his suggestion is the girl that hates Chase, but he has no idea why.
Madison has lost everything she worked so hard for due to her choice in men. Now she's home trying to restart her life and get back on her feet. However, her living conditions could be quieter but she's unemployed, so she can't get an apartment. Her choices are limited until she meets with Chase, the boy she hates that used to live next door growing up. She's held a grudge for ten years, but that doesn't mean she has to let him off the hook now.
I loved this story and the characters. It was funny, sad, and an enjoyable read. I can't wait to read more of the Lindell Series to come.
This was a good book and I enjoyed it although I didn’t always love Madison’s character.

Looking forward to more from this small town. 3.5 Stars
Having been let go from the team he played for in the NHL, and recently separating from his wife, Chase Woodson has taken his four year twin boys and moved back to his hometown of Lindell where he’s working at the family's hardware store.
After her ex destroyed her interior design company in the city, Madison Kelly has also found herself back home, living with her parents as she licks her wounds. She ends up taking on the role of nanny to Chase’s twin boys, using his offer of a job to her advantage by requesting the position is a live-in one, despite her dislike of him due to an encounter that took place when she was younger, one he’s got no recollection of. This is where things really begin to heat up between the pair, the initial attraction they felt towards one another soars due to their close proximity living under the same roof. One night when they both end up at the local bar temptation proves to be too much and they end up leaving together and heading towards the local hotel where they embark on a night of passion.
It was only supposed to be the one night, but when Chase presents the idea of their nights belonging to each other, Madison quickly agrees. Can the pair keep to their new arrangement? Or do they end up tangled up in what was supposed to be a no-strings relationship of sorts?
Sparks fly from the very beginning with these two, their intense chemistry and the push/pull of their attraction towards one another all towards making this book a fantastic start to a new series, also the connection Madison has with the twins 🥰🥰🥰.
I can’t wait to see what’s in-store next for the folk of Lindell with Adalynn and Cash’s story.
This read like a summer Hallmark movie. Imagine a small town romance with a single dad and the girl next door both moving back home when they need a second chance at life.
Chase Woodson and Madison Kelly both need a fresh start after their current lives fall apart and what better way to lick your wounds than back in your hometown with family and friends supporting you. Call it fate, call it timing, call it what you will, but both Chase and Madison arrived back in town when they needed a fresh start and that has to mean something...right?
Chase Woodson has twin boys, Cole and Cale, who are sweet, but a bit precocious. I loved them dearly. Chase needs a bit of help while he gets his life back in order and hiring his old neighbor, Madison Kelly, as his nanny is suggested.
Madison has also just moved back to town and looking to get back on her feet, and while she's always been great with children, it doesn't mean she wants to work for the boy...of man now, who snubbed her years ago. Even if his kids are adorable. Except those kids...really do win her over.
I loved stepping into this new small town and getting to know all the colorful townspeople and secondary characters that were flushed out for later books. It's definitely a world I'd like to return to.
As for Chase and Madison, their relationship was a bit stilted at times. Their lack of communication was their biggest issue, especially when it came to their past. I would have loved to see some passion while they worked out their old wounds with each other more, instead of keeping so much internalized. So, while they didn't have issues between the sheets, they also didn't use their words, if that makes sense.
I loved the twins, and their sweet outlook on so much of the world, even though they'd also lost the shine on a certain someone...🫣🤐 I won't say more, their adorable disposition made up so much of this sweet book and made it worth reading.
A solid 4.5 star read as I enjoyed so much about this new series and really look forward to diving into more couples.
Chase went from being a famous hockey player, married with two kids. Then he lost his job and finds out his wife was cheating on him with a fellow player. Now his moved back home and working at his father’s hardware store. He also needs someone to watch his adorable twin boys as they cant keep on hanging out in the store with him. So, he hires Madison as a nanny to watch them, but Madison hates him for what reason he doesn’t know.
Madison is back home, after experiencing a terrible thing with her ex. Now she’s living at home and no job no clients no nothing. When Chase calls her she thinks his hiring her to decorate his new house, but in actual fact his looking for a nanny. But beggers can’t be choosers, so she agrees reluctantly… And she will just ignore her childhood crush she had and the attractions she is feeling now…
I enjoyed the storyline. I love a single parent romance. However… Chase I had no problems with, he was an amazing son and an amazing father to his kids. My problem was Madison. OH MY WORD. So, Chase stood her up in high school, and yes it was probably traumatic, it was a prom. But damn woman get over it. You were engaged and yet she still held a grudge. And she was terrible with Chase in the beginning and that completely put me off her character.
I also wanted more time spent with the adorable twins. They were so freaking cute, the glimpses we did get of them. All in all, storyline good, main male character awesome, female character meh…
But I definitely would love to read the next story in this series. Maybe the sheriff…lol
Chase Woodson left his hometown with no plans of ever returning, but life has handed him an unexpected turn and now he finds himself doing just that. Moving home is really the only thing that makes sense right now. With having two young boys to raise on his own and a father in desperate need of his help it's the one place he can turn where things in his currently chaotic life might settle down. But he certainly can't do it all by himself... and that's where high school enemy Madison Kelly comes in.
The pages of Back Against the Wall reunites two old high school foes and gives them a life they never expected... one that has them eventually living under the same roof. When these two enemies reunite there is still a little lingering animosity, old grudges die hard, but as they work together to create a better life for his children they start to see things in one another that they like. Not long after that like starts to turn into something more, something that neither wants to admit to the other. But once they do all bets are off...
This wonderfully penned enemies to lovers story really warmed the heart and it's characters made me feel right at home in their world... so much so, I didn't want to leave them when the last page found me. From beginning to end I was captivated by it's well penned words and wonderfully drawn characters, it was a story that checked all the boxes for me and left me aching for more. I cannot wait to make a return visit and meet more of the charming folks in Lindell! Highly recommend!
I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher and I am voluntarily leaving my honest and unbiased opinion.
As a devoted fan of heartwarming small-town romances, I am thrilled to share review of the first installment in the Lindell series. This captivating tale of Chase Woodson, a single dad to twins and former professional hockey player, and Madison Kelly, an interior designer, is a delightful blend of pain, love, and humor.
Chase, a complex and endearing character, is a standout, particularly in his interactions with his twin sons, whom he has sole custody of. His ex-wife, a despicable character, adds a layer of tension and conflict that drives the narrative. Madison, while a bit harder to relate to, still manages to win the reader's heart through her relationship with the boys, which is heartwarming and beautifully portrayed.
The story is filled with the quirky and meddling characters of Lindell, a town that seems to have a vested interest in seeing Chase and Madison together. The author skillfully weaves in the pain from both characters' pasts, new love, and the twins' antics, creating a compelling and entertaining narrative.
While I thoroughly enjoyed the story, I must admit that I was left wanting more. The characters were likable, and their story was entertaining, but I felt that the ending could have been more satisfying. However, this is a personal preference, and I am confident that many readers will find the conclusion to be just right.
Overall, Back Against the Wall is a well-written and enjoyable story that I would recommend to anyone looking for a good read. The characters are likable, the plot is engaging, and the setting is charming. I am eagerly anticipating the next installment in the series to see more of the quirky town of Lindell and its inhabitants.
ARC Review of Back Against The Wall by Marie James * * * * * A small town, single dad, enemies to lovers romance that is just filled with heated bitter attraction, questionable parents, and scarring kids for life!
Chase's life has taken a turn. He lost his job being a super sports star. His family is in shambles. Now, he is back in his hometown helping his father run the family shop, trying to manage two boys filled with energy and questionable ideas. He needs help. Madison's life has hit riock bottom. Someone she trusted and loved - apparently - broke her heart and ripped everything from her. Now, she's back in her childhood bedroom hearing her parents...exercise, with very little prospects and filled with embarrassment. She needs a job. What she did not want to deal with...was HIM. However, her new job now comes with some 'benefits', and the quarrelling between old school chums turns into a desire neither were prepared for.
The author has delivered some spitfire and family sweetness between these two love birds who have already been through the ringer with their love lives. Now, they have found each other making a particular arrangement that has them dealing out the Os like never before. Madison and the twins already have a lovely relationship. They are sweet and funny kids who need real lessons in magic...please! Chase is a great dad, and has amazing control in his temper while managing his kids, the feelings he has with Madison, his cranky dad and the business. Interested to see the rest of the series.
~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~
This is the first in a new series, and I am going to be looking out for the next one, for sure. I enjoyed the mix of ex-NFL worldliness, big city career and the return to small town reality that both the leads experience. That dichotomy of which is the best place to be, and the reasons why is something that many of us understand, or others crave.
Chase finds himself home looking after his twin boys after a messy and split from his less than motherly wife. Madison is home because she trusted the wrong man and he destroyed her business as well as her confidence. Neither is happy about being 'home' and neither is dealing well with thoughts of how the future may play out. These things even the playing field in a really clever way, and ensure that there is both dislike due to them being the same sex as their betrayer, but also empathy for the wrongs they have suffered - not that either explains that for quite a while!
I enjoyed this for its humour and for the inevitability of their relationship even if there are some entertaining twists and turns. An easy read with hints as to future installment leads ... Madison's best friend definitely has to straighten out her bff arrangement soon!
✨️ Enemies to Lovers ✨️ Small Town Romance ✨️ Single Dad / Nanny
Chase and Madison
Chase ‘s life is already complicated. But moving back to his hometown after disastrous events in his personal life and career wasn't the worst he could do. Hiring Madison as a nanny might be. Falling for clear definitely is. Are there a few reasons to not get attached to a woman And especially the nanny, who seems to not to like him much anyway. Madison had to move back home after a few very bad events made her life a shitshow. Working as a nanny for her highschool crush turned into the opposite might be a mistake. Falling for him definitely is. But both can't deny their attraction despite their circumstances. If they only would have talked and been open and honest with each other. Might haven't cost them the most precious thing they experienced so far. Definitely wouldn't have broken their trusts…. And hearts. Two stubborn heads, two broken mistrusting souls and a terrible failed communication. Will they be able to confess feelings for each other and work out the problems and overcome their pasts? Sometimes life throws you a curveball for a reason. And that might be your second chance with someone who was always meant to be the one for you. An interesting story with flawed characters. Life changing incidents. And growing on your experiences, learn and do better. And needing the right person to heal from the wrong one.
Chase and Madison's story was a nice and easy read with a bit of drama, crazy spiteful exes, meddling parents, and about starting over.
Both Madison and Chase have gotten a raw deal when it comes to relationships and marriage so they have returned to their hometown for a safe space to crash and to contemplate what to do going forward as well as to start to heal. Chase's main focus is his twins Cale and Cole.
Madison was a character who made you laugh out loud she was quite the character we looked forward to what she would say next just to make us laugh. She is still raw and vulnerable from her recent breakup and sometimes it messes with her mind and emotions when it comes to her judgment it is the same for Chase and what this couple lacked was communication. We loved Chase though he was a wonderful father all around nice guy and loved how patient he was with his father who doesn't like change.
Overall this was an enjoyable read packed with a bit of drama, love, laughter, heartache, and beautiful friendships. We thought that Cale and Cole stole the show as those twin boys were little heart-breakers already. This story had its ups and downs but, fate seemed to put these two people into one's path once again, and they are finally able to act on those childhood crushes/fantasies. This couple had fierce lust attraction and chemistry and were good for one another but, their insecurites hurt heartache, and pain would take some twists and turns along the way before finding their happily ever afters.
A new series by Marie James, Lindell Series and Back Against the Wall is book one. I love new story lines and series but dang I hate waiting for the next book to come out, ugh!!! Tropes: • Enemies to Lovers • Small Gown • Single Dad • Sports Both Chase and Madison leave their hometown to become something, Chase a hockey player and Madison opening her own business of interior design. After Madison’s ex run her company in the ground by stealing from her customers and then Chase catches his wife cheating with his best friend, they both end up right back in Lindell. Chase needs a nanny for his 2 boys and Madison needed a job. Sparks fly between them both and they decided they would do casual or even employment with benefits. Lines begin to blur and they both find themselves in an awkward position and needing to step back and catch their breath. Chase determined that he can’t keep space between them after a week gives in and they find themselves in a precarious position, especially when photos pop up online the next day. Chase feels betrayed and lashes out while Madison is blind to it all until the damage has already been done. Chase must find a way to get Madison to forgive him and come back home to her small-town best friend, her family, the boys that have come to love her, and to him who is so madly in love with her. I love this story but I can’t wait to see what else Marie James has in store for us in Lindell!
I thought this was a fantastic start to a new Marie James Series. It’s set in the small town of Lindell Texas where both Chase and Madison grew up. Several years have past and Chase, a former hockey star, has moved back home after a very public split from his wife. He’s moved back to Lindell with his small twin sons to give them a better life and help his dad with the family hardware store. But Chase quickly learns that bringing two small boys to the store everyday isn’t going to work. So he sets out to find them a nanny. He turns to Madison, who of course wants nothing to do with him after an embarrassing incident years ago in school. But she too has recently moved back to Lindell after her ex took her for everything she had. Since she’s desperate for a job and a way to move out from her parents' home, she decides to take Chase up on his offer. Especially after meeting the precocious twin boys.
Both Chase and Madison have trust issues when it comes to the opposite sex. Between their personal past issues (which Chase doesn’t even remember) and both their ex’s brutal betrayals, needless to say their road together is extremely bumpy. Miscommunication, misunderstandings, lies and heartbreak threaten everything around them. Two headstrong people who know what they want but can’t seem to get past the anger, hurt and betrayal.
Outstanding read and this reader can’t wait to see what happens next in the small town of Lindell Texas.
Chase has a complex life but, the best part of his life is his sons. He is a brilliant dad and will do everything to protect his son from danger. That danger is his ex wife who has NO mother instincts.
Madison life is alway complex but it wasn’t her fault. She thought she found love and in the end was a conman. Now with debts that he left behind I hope in the next book that we see her ex Sam get some karma back!! I do not like Conman Sam.
Chase & Madison love story is sweet and they both want to keep the twins Cale & Cole safe and make sure they have a loving happy life. They are couple goals and parent goals. Never stop loving someone & never stop fighting for them
Both do try to keep their minds in the present. However, the past of betrayals keeps reappearing in their heads and they are caution to trust each other with their own hearts...
"I'll spend the rest of my life proving that to you, but it might be s little easier if you stop fucking running from me."
Thank to Adalynn & both parents knock some sense into them and it was very entertaining 🤣 The ending I just couldn't stop smiling and I promise you won't either
I can not wait for Cash & Adalynn/ Ads love story. The small teases throughout the book got me even more excited. After that last sentence from Ads mouth...I have more questions...no spoilers. They are my fav couple they are just ADORABLE
