After botching her first solo spell, where she only partially reanimates her grandfather into a voice in a toy jack-in-the-box, Alyssa has to set out to find and return a gryphon king’s magik scarf or else he will do something unspeakable to her grandmother. But that sneaky scarf is not where the king said it was, and now the only way to get to it is through a dragon’s lair.

M.K.'s love of books has been lifelong, and her love of fantasy is the same. JRR Tolkien saved her life when she was a kid by producing The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings series, books that she could escape into to avoid her alcoholic parent and a lonely childhood.
The Magik Scarf has been the culmination of years of writing and publishing in various other genres.
The Perfect Gift! Not my usual genre, but I came across this book while doing early Xmas shopping and the cover just pulled me in. If you are a parent, grandparent, aunt or uncle, or even a teacher of young teens who love adventure fantasy, this is an excellent novel to get into their hands. This is a superb, magnificently written first book in a brand new series that just might be the next great adventure series. Perfect for advanced readers in middle school and up into high school. Would be brilliant as a ‘read to me’ book for younger kids as well. I know my grandkids will love it!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Magik scarf is a delightful YA hero's journey.
Alyssa is tasked with not only saving her grandmother but having to stand on her own two feet for the first time. She must trust herself in order to avoid becoming a pawn in someone else's game.
Luckily, she makes some friends along the way worthy of her trust, and you can watch her grow through each adventure she endures.
The story feels like a glimpse back to olden times where magical creatures are sure to roam and wizard's are more common than you think. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Have you ever wondered what The Hobbit would be like if it were written by Diane Wynne Jones for a YA audience? Well, you've found it.
The Magik Scarf is a delightful combination of whimsy and adventure. In it, we follow Alyssa Chance Oh—a sixteen-year-old who goes on a journey to save her Granny Gert. With her trusted Pappy Oh in hand, she sets off through the Greater Daegries in search of a magic scarf. But the scarf is magic, and seemingly has a will of its own.
Over the course of the story, she encounters many wondrous—and some no-so-wondrous—beasts. From gryphons to sirens to yetis, dwarves (at least, I think they're dwarves) to elves, mages to kings. And yes, there's even a dragon! Alyssa goes on the journey of a lifetime, and discovers both her power and her courage along the way.
Because the MC is only sixteen, I found myself a little annoyed by her innocent helplessness, but... she's sixteen. We're all a little annoying and inexperienced at that age. And she matures a lot as the story unfolds, which was part of the fun.
Alyssa Chance Oh only partially brings her grandfather (Pappy Oh) back from recent death when she uses a spell she kinda messes up--kinda messes up a lot! So she unknowingly endangers her grandmother. To save her grandmother, she has to make a deal with a Gryphon king who's a braggart and manipulator. If Alyssa's to meet his deadline and retrieve his magic scarf for him, she's got to figure out half-truths and missing information and complete task after task to find who really has this important magical item...and we learn who this scarf truly belongs to.
Along the way, she learns to re-prove herself to the "authorities" who can (and can't) help her.
This is a great quest story with high stakes that will keep young adult readers turning the pages while they see the importance of family and loyalty and sticking to an important goal.
I don’t usually reach for YA or fantasy, so The Magic Scarf surprised me in the best way. M.K. Browning delivers confident storytelling, vivid world-building, and a fast-moving quest that keeps the pages turning. Alyssa’s journey is packed with clever twists, memorable creatures, and genuine heart as she learns hard lessons about responsibility, family, and trust. The writing feels polished without losing its sense of fun. Even as an outsider to the genre, I enjoyed the ride. Let’s just say this story proves magic is powerful, unpredictable, and probably best left to the adults. I think Pappy Oh and Granny Gert would agree.
