Everyone else thinks Ash is angry because his best friend got married. Seth and Dougal, two tasty local farmers, find out the truth. They spend a few weeks giving Ash a different sort of education in love.
This was a quick read, and is a good back story on the character of Ash (from Winter Trail by the same author). You don't have to read it to enjoy this one, but it gives some good background on the quiet hottie from Winter Trail.
There was one long and satisfying sex scene, and the rest was a really good story. While it has a historical setting, it didn't give you a tedious history lesson along with it, just vintage touches where it was necessary. Ash is just hot hot hot! The secondary characters are all great, especially the best friend Robbie, I wanted to strangle him. I'm sure we all have a Robbie somewhere in our pasts.
Overall, a great read with some crazy hot sex.

"Barn Dance" is a short, sweet, to the point, and OH so sexy story about a young man called Ash who is stuck at a wedding, watching his best friend and lover, Robbie, get married...to a woman. To say he's unhappy would be the understatement of the year. To top it all off, Robbie tells him that he still wants to have sex with him, even if he's married and about to be a father.

Ash leaves in anger, and on his way home, he stops at the homestead of Seth and Dougal, farmers and lovers themselves. After Ash pours his heart out to the two men, they decide to show Ash how wonderful a relationship can be...and how to properly give and recieve pleasure. I love Ash, Seth, and Dougal. They're great characters who are nicely developed given how short the story is. The year is 1852, so gay love is not exactly acceptable, but the farm is away from town, and nobody really knows what goes on there, and what goes on there is some of the hottest, panty meltingest smexytimes I've read in a very long time. It's hard and raw, but it's also gentle and tender. These men genuinely care for one another, and it shows.

"Barn Dance" is really a coming of age story. The three men share an awesome summer, but Ash must move on. He is going to go to school to become a doctor, and Seth and Dougal have a farm to run. Visits are planned, and you know that their friendship is going to live on, whether they're having sex or not. I enjoyed it so, so much. Jules Radcliffe has gained a new fan, and I'm going to go and get as many JR books as I can find.

Wonderful Prequel to an Extraordinary Novel

This is a short story that takes off and doesn't stop--it just keeps winding into a startling orbit of want, need, eroticism and completely wild sex. This is about rural mid-19th century life in the Northeast--Vermont, specifically--and it's a prelude to "A Summer's Pursuit," one of the most extraordinary M/M historical romances you will ever read.

This one is about 19-year-old Ashton discovering his sexual identity, and needs, after his sexual playmate Robbie gets a girl in trouble and has to marry her--but wants Ashton to keep servicing him. No way will strong, beautiful, sensuous Ash succumb to that tease. In his despair he stumbles upon a neighboring farm where the owners, Dougal and Seth, are fierce lovers--which they cheekily reveal to him in a wonderfully erotic segue to some of the wildest, and most deeply felt, three-way entanglements you will read in any M/M romance, in any era, in any milieu.

That the novella ends with Ash somewhat on his way to many other encounters only compels you to get to the full fledged novel which follows. Wow.

Erotic historical writing that balances visceral sexual encounters with a keen feel for the rural United States evoked through dialogue that has an authentic ring. The sense of place and era that Radcliffe paints with her words gives enough flavour to imagine the places where Ash gets laid without slowing the pace of the story.

I'm looking forward to reading more of Radcliffe's writing on my e-reader.

This is a fun short story. Just the thing for a late summer read.

All three male characters are yummy, but mix them together and they are ambrosia.

Jules Radcliffe spun a perfect story for a lazy summer day. Prequel to A Summer Pursuit, it gets the imagination stirred up and ready for Ash’s next story.

I’m ready for more, Jules!

Ok erotic short story. This takes place in mid-19th century Vermont but other than the language (did people really speak like that), the time period is almost a non-factor. I know this is a character set-up for the two full-length stories in this series, but quite frankly, this didn’t pull me in enough to want to read them.
