Spectre in the Night

Rate this book
A Halloween-inspired fantasy adventure centered around a masquerade ball where marriages, lives, and kingdoms are on the line.

In Ehlronia, war has taken the east. A bruised and battered legion sets forth on a vicious conquest to claim new lands for their king. But some orders are not so easily followed. And some secrets are not so easily forgotten.

In Eska, the masked Spectre’s Eve Ball looms large as nobles from across the country prepare to celebrate on this night of opulence and intrigue.

But something dark and mysterious is swelling in the shadows of the Diamond Keep. And a small band of outlanders might be the only ones who can defeat the specters that lurk in the night.

Rounding up my 4.5* because I think this book deserves it! A little slow at first, but the ending was scene after scene of the buildup from the past three books coming to a head. I am glad I stuck with the series to get to this point.

The good: each character is complex and fairly well-fleshed out by this point, in part because they’ve all had to make difficult decisions and suffer consequences for them. I find Nadia especially compelling because she defies the “overpowered” female trope I tend to see in fantasy today, but still makes for a powerful and layered voice. I also love Arlo: we need more main characters who’re older in fantasy books! It’s interesting to me to see how his past life prior to the events of the book affects him. Each of his chapters is like peeling back an onion in the best way. The plot is also easily understandable, yet the twists were shocking and compelling.

The bad: I do miss Leara. I get that her story doesn’t get intersect with the others, but this is the second book where she’s kinda ignored…but that’s a fairly small point. And the omnibus edition I’m reading makes this con a bit less. I will also say this book is by far by far by FAR the best book in the series, which makes me feel like the pacing for the first three books is very off (so, not rlly a con for this book but for the series as a whole). Imo the author could probably have combined the first two books at least with parts of the third to craft a more compelling narrative.

Anyway, I think this book, despite some flaws, has made the series worth it for me. I’m excited for book 5!

This book was given to me by Booksirens in exchange for my honest review.

This is by far the best book in the series thus far. Spectre in the Night continues Bren's journey as he and his companions try to end a war, solve the mystery of Bren's little black book, and Bren tries to figure out his purpose. At this point, Bren's story intersects with Nadia's, the Diamond Queen's right-hand lady, after the Spectre Ball goes array. Meanwhile, Bren's military friends are engaging in a war campaign while refusing to give up hope that he is still alive. Leara's story does not continue in this book, and I am curious if her story will pick up in the next book. Will she intersect with Bren and his friends? What role will she end up playing in future battles? I guess we will have to wait and see!

The story is engaging and riveting, bloody and intense. While this story definitely moved the story along and we are beginning the see the inner workings of a serious plot, I was still left with more questions than answers. We are left with 2 very large cliffhangers that have me dying to know more. June 2024 cannot come soon enough. If you are interested in fast-paced, short fantasy, this is certainly the book for you. Despite the series being 4 books thus far, this is a low-investment series that will leave you begging for more.

5 out of 5 would recommend!

I have burned through every book in this series in no time. This is by far the best book in the series thus far. This was an excellent fourth book that tied together many of the characters and storylines that had been introduced in the previous three books. Seeing storylines converge in unexpected ways is always a joy of mine. The author does a fantastic job of building up the characters and keeping the plot fresh. This book is a great read for the Halloween time! Honestly for anytime but since it’s the season! It had me drawn in and I couldn’t put it down! Very descriptive had me feeling like I was in the story the whole time! This was by far the best book of the bunch so far. Dovidans' writing, while already quite good with Wolfsong, seems to get better and bettwr with each book (who would have thunk it). Its with Spectre in the Night that the Moonrise books truly elevate the epic scale its clearly aspiring to be.

While more questions arose for me than were answered, it makes me eager to continue onto the next book. Its not since Dungeon Crawler Carl early last year that I've been so eager to power through a series. The twists at the end of the book were quite interesting, and I'm eager to see where they go.

Characters were great as always, and reading through Augustus' journey throughout as he comes to terms, or better put self-loathingly does not come to terms, with how his own person morals clash with that of the military apparatus he finds himself in was truly impressive. Brendon, while an interesting character, does seem to be stalling out a bit in my opinion as far as characters development goes, but wr still have a ways to go, so I look forward to seeing how that plays out. Nadia is by far the best written character in the series so far for me, and her turmoils feel very realistic throughout. Kumori is absolutely fantastic and such a great character. Hasn't had much to any development since the first half of Wolfsong, but it almost feels like it doesnt matter because hes so great already.

Overall, this book was a delight to read, and I cant wait to blast through book five and then impatiently await book six.

By far the best book in the serie, and yes I’m sure I have said this every single time. But there’s something that can’t be deny, and is the fact that Ignatz surprises us every time with each volume. In this fourth book we continue following the path of Brendan and his friends and many things of his history are finally being explained and we start to see how events entwine.

There are so many spooky elements added and it’s perfect for these season. One thing that I feel is that sometimes the stories of some characters are left behind, like if there was a pause in their stories, and it’s a little frustrating, but understandable since there are so many POV’s to be covered and so far Ignatz has been able to make it work.

From beginning to end, this book was epic! I called in sick the next day just to finish it. I've been in a bit of a reading slump and just not feeling the books I've been trying to get into. If anything, this book in this series will reignite your passion and love of adventure again.
It was such a fun read; especially for the Spooky Season! This book could be a stand-alone, like the author said, or it's just a fantastic continuation of the larger series. Brendan has really come into his own, and for the sake of not spoiling anything, it is beautifully written with moments so intriguing and so much depth that you forget entirely that you are reading. It's a special kind of story that can make someone start reading, and when they next glance down, they are on page 61, having the time of their lives. I love this author, and I recommend this series with my whole heart.

I did not want to put this installment of the Moonrise Saga down! This book follows the adventures of characters introduced in previous books with just enough information to allow it to be read as a standalone if desired. I loved all of the twists and turns this book held as well as the spooky, eerie vibes. It's absolutely a book worth reading during Halloween and the accompanying spooky season. The story told in Spectre in the Night was incredibly captivating and holds your attention like no other. If you're looking for a spooky season read for those cool fall nights, give Spectre in the Night a try. You won't be disappointed.

“Spectre in the night” was a wild ride. It tugged at my feelings at every corner, Dhito won my heart all over again. There was a large and enjoyable amount of twists in the second half leading to cliffhangers I don't believe I'll get over until I finish the next book. I loved how the story guides you through that distinct halloween feeling filled with mystery, wonder, expectation and even jump scares.

The descriptive nature of the book made it easy to immerse myself as the reader, with the beauty of the scenery and visual aid in the beautiful art, there was never a dull moment.

The complexity of some characters have me expecting great things for the next part of this journey.

I really liked the 4th installment of Moonrise saga. I would say it's my favorite so far. More things get explained, the characters are getting closer and we can see the events entwine. It's also perfect for the Halloween season.

The one bad thing is that, again we do not know what is happening with Leara. She was one of the main characters in book 1, but got completely forgotten in books 2 & 4. That seems like a really bad planning of plot.

I enjoyed this one a lot especially the way the spooky elements were described. I love that we get to see all the hard work Nadia put into the ball come to fruition. Honestly I love Kumori as a character, I don’t know what it is about him but he’s just great. And again the way that the different story lines converge is amazing. I know I’ve said that in basically every review I’ve made for this series but it’s genuinely something I really enjoyed while reading.

There is progress in this book. The pace is engaging and fast. There are some answers about key aspects of the trama: Brendon's book, a peek in the diamond court, the Ehlorian campaign, some connections between our multiple narrators and a fascinating reimagining of Halloween. 🎃 👻 This part definitely has revived my interest in the saga. I will have to pbe patient and wait for the next installment to find out what Leara roll will be.

This was the best book in the Moonrise saga so far me so far. The story really feels like it’s picking up pace now and a lot of information in the plot slots into place. I read it in one sitting and didn’t want to put it down. I really enjoyed that the book is set around a Halloween ball and has all the fantasy elements you could want for this time of year! A spooky haunted wood, mysterious strangers, and an atmospheric castle ball. As well as a great plot and interesting character development. This was a great read.

4.5

This book is probably my favourite so far. I really enjoed all the haunted feeling of it, specially the whole halloween-esc vibe combined with a masquerade ball. The way character's paths crossed and entwined felt organic, as a result of what was happening and not forced, which also answered a some more questions from the previous books.

Ok, this book is my favorite of the series so far. I feel like it had the most action and kept me interested. It kind of feels like I'm reading multiple books at one time, which can be a bit confusing. Overall, I really like it and I can't wait for the next book.

I really enjoyed this book. It had probably the most action and it had the halloween feel to it. But it wasnt my favourite in the series. We got to see many characters, but i am missing Leara, which was one of the main characters in the first book and i fell in love with her.

I'm not gonna say that it's not interesting, it is. The problem is I can't seem to get lost in the world of the story. The book felt like filler for most of the time and honestly the main points that moved the story forward didn't happen until the last 4ish chapters. The story has potential but it wasn't life-altering.

Can't begin to tell you how engrossed I am into this story line. So much intrigue, world building, character development and suspense. Loved the Halloween feel to this chapter of the story. Yet again had me visually excited to keep reading. The action of the Wolf Guild, the mysteries around every corner, the corruption in the court, the difficult decisions. Loved the strong female characters and secret alliances. The courtship and espionage. Plus, Lady White popping off yet going through so much here...phew!

I absolutely loved the chapters about the spectre's eve ball. The whole book was good but the ball was really worth the hype. I thought the book was starting to slow down on those last few chapters but boy was I wrong! The end threw me and I'm definitely looking forward to book 5.
