Deeply conflicted about her feelings for two seemingly very different men, Celeste continues her fight against the Blight as Red Wolf recovers from his injuries. Desperate to return to her side, Red Wolf risks hurting himself further—all the while wrestling with the knowledge that the demon might not be as gone as they assumed. Meanwhile, Princess Brianna, Celeste’s alter ego, becomes the target of an assassination plot. Aidan is determined to keep her safe, even though nothing can protect her from what’s to come. Someone is lurking in the shadows, and betrayal will come from an unexpected source…
Katherine "Kate" Macdonald writes the books she wishes she could have read more of as a teen—stories of fierce girls and gentle boys, of romance and adventure, and where the "three Cs" (chemistry, communication and consent) reign supreme. There may still be a little bit of miscommunication along the way as the characters grow as people, but she tries not to rely on that trope too much!
She loves books packed with witty banter, stories where you can feel the love growing between a pair, that include excellent, well-developed side-characters and a few subtly-foreshadowed twists and turns. She despises toxic relationships and tales that rely on old-fashioned notions of male and female stereotypes. She enjoys bending expectations and crafting worlds where sexism is a thing of the past. She considers herself an LGBTQIA+ friendly author, and her stories include a range of characters from within the community and absolutely no discrimination in sight.
She holds a BA in English and Creative Writing from Lancaster University, and a PGCE in teaching English and Drama from the University of Exeter. She's been a writer since she was old enough to hold a crayon, but it was only after surviving a year of parenthood and a full-time job on less than six hours of sleep a night that she finally gained the courage to publish her debut novel, "The Rose and the Thorn." It's a retelling of Beauty and the Beast inspired by a dream of a girl surrounded by snow in a field of flowers.
At her heart, Macdonald is storyteller, and it is her dream to inspire others in the way that she has been inspired.
She lives in Devon with her manic child and well-behaved cats.
Okay, bear with me because this is just gonna be me internally screaming for 2 minutes.
WHAT IN THE WHOLE ABADDON WAS THIS??
Ok, but on a more serious note, this book ATE IT, IT DEVOURED, IT SLAYED (litterly)
First and foremost, I loved the progression of the series in the lady by the lake. It was perfect. Fell in love with the characters even more. Bree is officially my favorite heroine like ever, and Red Wolf holy shit I am weak for him, and I adored that we got more of his backstory in this book. The adventure and the magic system and the world building continued to develop, and I loved it so much. And for the readers who wanted a liiiitle more sexy time in this, WE GOT IT AND WE GOT FED. 🙈😃
As always the incredible author leaves us on a cliff hanger that makes me scream for the next book!!
Overall 6/5 stars.
(-side not. Loved that there was a summarize in the begining, even though I re read the first book like 10 times before this one, it is so nice to see in any book a little reminder, to help get into the story better) 💗💗💗
I thoroughly enjoyed this continuation of the four square shenanigans! The pining and the confused feelings was absolutely delicious and the flirtatious banter was (as always) perfection!
Absolutely stunning! If you are a fan of fantasy, sloooooowwww burn (I’m talking 1 scene), and fae romance…. You will love this book! This author has now become a one click author for me.
Red Wolf’s flirtatious nature is a stark contrast to Aidan. Both so different, yet they are one in the same. Both fierce, loyal, protective and hiding their own secrets.
Brianna started off as timid and meek, however with the help of Celeste (and partly from red wolf) she blossomed into a stunning and fierce goddess.
In the second installment of A Throne of Pearls and Bones, we jump right back into the action. Celeste is back with Wolf and both work to fix the Blight. Meanwhile, Princess Brianna, Celeste's alter ego, becomes the target of an assassination plot.
I still think the secret identities and shifting affections is delightfully comical and we get a whole lot of yearning and angst out of it - which is incredibly fun for the reader, who knows all. The expanding world-building and diversity (numerous queer identities) within the cast of characters add depth to the story.
Overall, "The Lady by the Lake" is a fun read that will appeal to fans of fantasy and romance alike. It has engaging characters and compelling themes. This was a very satisfying sequel to the first. Can't wait to see what's next.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I continue to enjoy this story, although I do think it suffered from middle-book syndrome some. There are things going on, but not much forward motion until the end - they continue to fight the Blight, and Aidan and Brianna continue to feel confused about their feelings for two people. The back and forth of their feelings got tiring, but then things started to happen and the finale was really engaging.
Gripping follow up to The Soul in the Sword! The longing, the PINING, the oh my god would you just confess everything already feeling that will haunt you straight to the end. Once I got to about 20%, that was it. Full on binge mode.
This was such a great continuation to the series!! Love the relationship and dynamic between our heroes (and this insane love square going on is delicious). I thought I predicted the reveal at the end… but then it just kept going!
My jaw is on the floor and I am seated and ready for book 3!

There are spoilers if you have not read the first book.
This was a fantastic book, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I loved the element of secret identities and the love square between the two main characters and how it develops even more in the second instalment. It was interesting to see the different dynamics meeting and how the romance shifted. It gave me total Miraculous Ladybug vibes but done better in my opinion. I also liked the talk about sexuality and one of the side characters being deaf and how the people around him are able to talk to him through sign language.
I also enjoyed the fey world as always and how Brianna wants to help the fey and unite them with the mortals, but is not ready to take the throne just yet.
I think it was good that the focus was not much on the blight in this book as the first book. Where the focus was more on the fey and mortals, while the blight was a little more in the background.
The ending threw me of the guard. It gave me a punch to the stomach in a good way. Damn I cannot wait for the third instalment to see how it all ends!
Those who worry about middle book slumps need have no fear! The author builds on the fun dynamics of the “love square” and fascinating lore while maintaining plenty of swoon-worthy moments and delicious dramatic irony. The story may have even infiltrated my dreams, and I wasn’t at all upset about it. This book had me squealing in excitement, sobbing, laughing—there are so many great moments, and I can’t wait for the finale.
“You shouldn’t flirt with me.” “Oh? Why not? The object of your affections finally returning them? Have I got competition?” “I will throw you off this balcony.” “Stop threatening me or I might just fall in love with you.”
I am absolutely screaming, crying throwing up rn so I’ll write this review properly in the morning.
Okay so it’s the next morning lol. Firstly, I absolutely loved the continuation of the love square in this book, especially since it gave marichat energy because it was mostly about Bree and Red Wolf falling in love <3 Secondly, the high stakes in this book as well as the gigantic plot twists and turns was such a welcome surprise! I don’t think a book has given me whiplash and had my jaw on the floor like this since I read the ending of the ballad of never after! And you know a book is good when it has you reading till the early hours in the morning because you refuse to put it down until you finish. The set up for the next book was also absolutely perfect and I cannot wait to see how the romance and plot develops from here. So yeah another easy 5 stars and I absolutely will be jumping into the final book of this trilogy because I need to know what happens next!🫶🏼
Quotes I love:💗✨
“I once told Brianna that Celeste shone so brightly that I could forget about the shadows. Strange that Brianna should have that effect on me too.”
“I can’t believe he had the audacity to flirt with me when he’s supposed to be in love with Celeste. Am I honestly getting jealous of myself right now? Am I honestly getting jealous?”
“I call Celeste ‘Moonbeam’ jokingly, but it was Brianna that looked like moonlight in that moment, like a pearl in a vat of ink, her pale, porcelain face shining in the dark, the sea beading on her face like diamonds.”
“Her breath ghosts my cheek, the warmth of her body curling towards my chest. She looks different in daylight, different to how she looked that night beneath the stars, but her eyes are just as bright, just as liquidus.”
“She always smells like something crisp and floral and almost cold, even when radiating with warmth. It’s why I call her Moonbeam even when she looks like the setting sun. Starburst. Sunshine. Better names. I wish I could utter them now.”
“Pale, milky light stretches across the sea. I watch it expand from behind my windows.”
“What’s your favourite colour?” “I don’t have just one,” she admits. “I like the colour of stone after rain, when the sun shines over it. I like the liquid orange of the sun setting over the sea, and the pink-gold colour of the clouds at dawn.” “Pink-gold, hmm?” I say, tugging on a lock of her hair. “Who would have guessed?” “And you?” she says. “Well, I used to rank forest green as my favourite, but now I have a particular fondness for violet…” I stare at her eyes, and she blushes and turns away.”
“I don’t know how he does it—how he shoulders the darkness in the world and shrugs it off. He feels it, and he bears it. It doesn’t crush him. Nothing ever seems to, or not for long. He’s so much stronger than me.”
“I miss the lazy evenings down by the lake, and the nights dancing under the stars.”
“It’s like every line of poetry ever written suddenly makes sense, like the answer to the universe is written between us.”
“I stroke his face, thumbing his lips, resisting the urge to kiss him again. “I can’t wait to know the rest of you,” I whisper. I fall asleep to the sound of his heartbeat, praying for the Blight to be over. I don’t care about giving up the sword, or giving up my powers, or even having to give up Boann and the Aes Sidhe. I only care about him.”
“Memories of last night flood my cheeks with colour. Red Wolf dismounts, catching my gaze, and I wonder if he’s thinking of it too.”
“Although we are saved from snow, frost hardens on the ground, covering the fields, icing the gardens, making everything from the leaves to the spider’s webs sparkle like diamonds.”
“Sirius, the dog star, is stitched across my chest. No one will know the significance. No one but him.”
“It’s a beautiful night, and I don’t want anything to shatter this moment. I wish I could keep it going forever, that I could keep us encased inside it like a precious bauble. I want to stay here beside him, watching the light of the fireworks shattering against the pond, witnessing eruptions of sparks like bouquets of glitter. No need to talk, or think. No need to wonder or pretend.”
“The entire evening seemed like some kind of perfect, vivid dream, the kind you never want to wake from, the kind that doesn’t quite make sense but feels like it does when you’re dreaming it. For those hours, it felt like it was possible to float without magic, like laughter was a substance you could drink and smiles held the radiance of the sun. Time seemed to melt, all meaning fracturing. Through the haze of the dream shines Brianna’s face, as clear and soft as moonbeam.”
“She’s beautiful—moonlight given shape. I could marvel at her for hours.”

Wow! I mean I did rate this 5 stars, but it's not all the time the second book can take the lead over the first but I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Right up until the end! There's more, or there better be more. I should have known this wouldn't just be a two book story but I really wanted some conclusion in this one. Don't get me wrong we did get answers but there is still lots more to tell ;)
I started writing my thoughts as I was reading so here is what I wrote for the first half:
Not sure how I feel about so much Red Wolf when I really wanted more of Aidan. I know they are the same person but it doesn’t feel like it. Brianna and Celeste seems more obvious and we’re getting a lot of Brianna thank goodness because I like her that way better. I know Celeste is strong and has amazing abilities but I love Brianna. And OMG! I love her with Red Wolf. I love that he likes her even if he’s in love with Celeste. However, half way through it’s driving me a little crazy that they don’t realize who each other is. They’ve now done all this kissing with each other except for Brianna and Aidan, the ones I really want to. All bets will be off with that one. They keep getting interrupted. Oh plot how you mock me!
I wasn’t sold at the beginning of the story with Red Wolf still having a darkness of the Blight inside of him. I thought this was going to take a dark turn and it still might. He is changed, but as he grew closer to Bree he seemed more and more like himself, which I was surprised how much I wanted him back as he could drive me a little crazy. Him and Celeste seem a little further apart as well. Can’t wait until they realize who they are. I’m sure it’ll have repercussions thanks to the seer. But this can’t stay a secret much longer, their souls are joined. Which is why I guess we don't get this dark Red Wolf anymore. Hopefully this comes into play later in the story. Their connection.
I didn’t mention Kay much at all in my first review except that I love him. And still do. He sees so much and is one of those incredible people you want in your life. I wish there was a little more of him, but glad to see there may be a budding romance with him and Vivi.
The King keeps making some awful choices. His days are numbered. He’s losing his daughter and he’ll lose his kingdom. He can’t see what his decision will do for their future. Kindness does not have to be a weakness.
Alright, so that was my thoughts before we got some answers. And boy did lots happen in the last half of the book.
I got more romance, there was action, some questions answer, twists. It was wonderful and I hoping I won't have to wait to long to get the next one!
WHAT THE HECK IS MIDDLE BOOK SYNDROME?? Because THIS book has never heard of this! 😤
Honestly, did you like book 1? Then forget about it! Because book 1 doesn't hold a candle to #TheLadyByTheLake! Yes, I'm serious. Book 2 just took everything which made the first one great, and just thought "well, challenge accepted" 😈
It's spicy, it has so much angst and heartbreak and tension that it gave me heart palpitations, it made me cry, E-VE-RY chapter made me laugh (or at least snort) (minus the final five mind you)
I've loved the first book (giving it an easy 5 stars!) and had high hopes for the second. Alas, for me the "middle book syndrome" was quite noticeable. The first 20-30% were quite enjoyable, but the story really slowed down at that point, turning darker and darker with little actual plot moving forward until close to the end. I mean, I am somewhat glad that but... not sure it would have needed this whole book. The cliffhanger at the end isn't as bad as people made it seem either, to be honest.
Also, I am quite frustrated with the rather extreme tonal shift. While Book 1 was very much whimsical and fun, romantic and, while partly talking about serious topics, still rather lighthearted, this one is dark. ... you've got it all.
Still, at least there was still some humour found in various places and the interactions with Red Wolf tended to amuse me either way (most of the time), so... the middle score it will be.
The Lady by the Lake by Katherine Macdonald: A Throne of Pearls and Bones Volume Two continues the tale in exciting fashion. I had the absolute joy of reading an advanced reading copy of this Romantic Fantasy novel. This second book still revolves around the hidden identities and romantic confusion of the two main characters. Brianna/Celeste and Adian/Red Wolf's interactions are still very comical, frustrating, and great fun to read. The author juggles these scenes expertly. They still battle the Blight as the conflict between humans and Fae continues to increase, as does the rift between Princess Brianna and her father, King Caradoc. This second volume has upped the game with more adult relationships between characters, an even more tragic story, and somewhat increased violence. The last hundred plus pages with its jolting reveal (reveals?) had me reading non-stop. I am now off to start volume three and can only imagine where this story is heading, but I'm all in!! I highly recommend this book .
‘Never fault kindness; the world needs more of it’ By practicing virtues, we can make our world a better place to live. Actions can be as small as helping someone carry a bag or as large as initiating a community social project that’ll have a far-reaching & long-term positive impact. Showing kindness molds our character and provides an example for others to follow. Having said that, one of the characters mentioned that kindness could be seen as weakness in a leader of high-rank. I like how both sides of this addressed and later led to a discussion about whether or not the ends justify the means. Is there always a balance or even equity? I think this line, ‘You can tell a lot about [people] based on how they treat their enemies’ can be used as a tool to determine to whom one owes the kindness – the enemies or the enemies’ victims?
Some sage relationship advice from the author: ‘Don’t fall in love with your eyes.’ ‘You can’t seduce a girl to irritate her father.’ Never dishonor people by making them your second choice.
Fave line: ‘How am I to trust anyone whose tongue is crafted for lies?’
On a lighter note: Readers get to enjoy the ‘peaceful chaos’ of children entertaining themselves. I wanna know where I can get a flying horse…
There is so much that happened in this sequel that I am still trying to wrap my head around it. Without spoiling too much, I will say that secrets are revealed, some I guessed halfway through the book, some good and some bad, and totally unexpected.
It was a pleasant read, and I enjoyed reading more of the Bree and Aidan in both their identities. The characters get a little more fleshed out, (I really enjoyed reading about Vivi and Kay), we get more history, and there is so much change, for the better even if it was a painful realization. I am looking forward to next book, especially after this ending because there is so much to sift through and the stakes have been raised. I hope our couple will grow even closer and are able to defeat the evil and get some much needed rest after everything that has been thrown at them in this sequel.
Thank you Booksprout and Katherine MacDonald for letting me read and review an ARC of this book.
First of all, let me just say, the cover is beautiful! Props to the designer! As for the story itself, I love the continued use of Arthurian legend and I mentioned before how it felt like the last book was essentially relying too much on having Miraculous Ladybug as an inspiration, so I was glad to see it toned down here, allowing the characters to live as their own. But even back in the first book, I still liked them well enough and this is still the case here! Kay is still my favorite, but I'm really liking Bree and Aidan's relationship too and I'm looking forward to seeing where things go from here.
Absolutely wonderful continuation from book 1. I loved the development of all sides of the love square but especially the development between Bree and Red Wolf.
So many funny lines, witty banter, and sweet moments.
The plot progression in this was also excellent. Book 1 seemed to focus more on character development and establishing the dynamics between characters, so I became much more invested in the plot in Lady By the Lake. I also really liked that the action sequences were more varied than book 1- there was so much going on beyond just Celeste and Red Wolf taking out Sources.
The ending was even more of a cliffhanger than book 1 (I expected nothing less), so I'm eagerly awaiting the next book!
I received a free ARC of this book and am leaving a review voluntarily.
Katherine has become one of my “always read” authors. I’ve yet to be disappointed and I’m happy to say that’s the case here too!
Middle books are always so hard but this one has no slog! Mainly because while it’s part of a larger story, it’s also its own self contained tale which I love to see. It’s not just a stepping stone, the events that happen are vital.
As always, beautiful cover art and the story within matches. I love seeing more Arthurian details given the author’s own brush of paint and the slow burn continues to work ridiculously well. You both want more and yet savor the build up.
The ending…well, I dare not say anything except…where is book 3?!
I love the relationship between Brianna and Aidan, and the different dynamics that we can see between their real forms and their alter egos. The flirting game cliché may become one of my favorites thanks to these books. I didn't enjoy the action scenes in this book as much as I liked the ones in the first because I felt like they were purely written for the sake of the plot, so they weren't introduced as well. Also, I was more looking forward to seeing how the protagonists' relationship developed. Nonetheless, the action made the plot more interesting, and kept the story moving forward. I really liked the story, I wasn't expecting any of the plot twists and the ending left me shocked. I also find it quite interesting how the side characters are written. I like Vivi and Kay as a couple and I'm looking forward to seeing how their relationship develops in the future. Finally, I can't wait to see how this story ends. There are lots of questions left unanswered and I need Aidan and Brianna to end up together and to be happy. Thank you to Katherine Macdonald and Booksprout for the arc. This review is my honest and unbiased opinion.
This is for all lovers of slow-burn fae romance, and you should definitely start following Katherine Macdonald if you have not done so yet.
Expectations after the first book of the series were high, and I was not disappointed. This was a worthy second part, which often can be a bit tricky after the highs of a first.
Fantastic language, which is so important to me for the overall experience and joy of reading novels.
Great world-building and loveable characters with depth.
My only hope for the next part is that there will be a bit more steam. :).

This was incredible! Once again we found ourselves drawn into this incredible world that the author has created for us as we rejoin these amazing characters on their exciting and enthralling journey. The author weaves her spell and intertwines the storyline to hold us closer and draw us all the way in as things really start to heat up. With more action then book one, this captivating and thrilling read will have you on the edge of your seat with its twists and turns and surprises. The adventure, the magic, the romance, I am loving this series and am so looking forward to more!
I enjoyed reading this book, I even stayed up way too late to finish it, because I just wanted to read what was next. It's Katherine Macdonald, so it's expected. Yet, I still felt like something was missing in here. Maybe because this focused more on plot than the first one, maybe because something else I can't quite put my finger on. All in all, this was still a very enjoyable read that made want to read the next one as soon as I can. I really need a real resolution in the next book!.

Thank you to the author for providing me with a beta-reading copy <3
I'll leave a more detailed review closer to publication, but all you guys need to really know is this: this series has me in an absolute chokehold. I apologize in advance for the person I'm going to be when the third book releases.
Oh, and in case anyone is wondering... The spice may or may not be turned up a lil' bit in this one 👀 But I'll not say between who! You'll just have to read to find out ;)
I was so excited to read a new book of this series, and I was clearly not disappointed. From beginning to end, this new volume is breathtaking, making us smile, laugh, and cry. It's just so easy to forget about the world and just follow Brianna and Aidan's adventures. I couldn't put this book down, and was left feeling empty when I finished reading it. A Throne of Pearls and Bones is an addicting series, and honestly, I don't want to be cured.
This was the second book in the A Throne of Pearls and Bones series.
I liked the first book, and this was just as charming. I enjoyed reading about these characters again, and I noticed that this time there was a little more chemistry there, even a few steamy moments, which is good if that's what you're in the mood for.
Thank you to Booksprout and the author for a free copy to review.

Couldn't put it down! This book has everything: great characters, romance, action and lots of twists. I enjoyed the new relationships and adventures that emerged in this continuation of Bree's story. My only complaint is of course not knowing how it all ends. Can't wait to read more from this author and especially this series. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Like book one this book is definitely in my favorites of the year. The progression of the second book was wonderful. What I already loved in book one was the worldbuilding which was brought out even better in this book. This book made me love the characters even more especially when they made me laugh. I can't wait to read how their story continues. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
