It’s impossible to mind your own business in an apocalypse. Thieves, pillagers, murderers—these lovely folks used to be your neighbors. At least your best friend gives you an out when he calls from Alaska, asking for help to avenge his wife’s murder.
Cataclysmic earthquakes have decimated the American West, sending the country into chaos. As the Talbot family seeks refuge in the Rockies amid a rising catastrophe, a desperate SOS from BT uproots their plans for survival to send them on a world-altering quest for revenge, rescue, and the very life of the human race.
Because something worse is stirring at the geographic epicenter of the disaster—Devils Desk, Alaska. The quakes have done more than just upend the country. Unaware of the nature of this new threat, the Talbots head into the breach to take on a rift to a dark dimension where a monstrous, boreal race awakens…
As the unstoppable enemy masses in the paralyzed West, familiar characters from Talbot's universe converge to form a resistance, but will it be enough to defeat this cataclysmic foe?
Find out in book 2 of the brand-new apocalyptic series from the bestselling author of Zombie Fallout and Indian Hill.
I really love this author and his characters. It is especially fun that the same characters feature over multiple series, based in parallel Earths.
In this particular series, the characters were camping in Alaska when disaster struck. The western coast of the United States suffered an earthquake, shearing off California. The earthquake also stirred up some very dangerous creatures, near where Michael Talbot, his family and his best friend BT were camping. Not everyone made it out of Alaska alive.
In book two, Mike and his family are trying to live in peace. They have a bunker type dwelling, in the mountains of Colorado. The nation is still in turmoil from what happened to the western coast and there have been additional earthquakes causing more damage throughout the country. It's becoming an 'every man for himself' type of world and Mike struggles to even get antibiotics for his son, who is suffering from strep throat, with a high fever.
Then Mike gets a garbled voice-mail message from his friend BT. BT had returned to Alaska to hunt the creatures who killed his wife. The message is asking Mike for help. Mike, being the loyal friend that he is, packs up his family, fleeing hostile neighbors, and returns to Alaska in order to rescue his friend.
I loved the first book and it was ok as a stand alone, but I am happy to continue the journey! If you have read a lot of his other books, you see a crossover of characters and it was nice to see a few familiar names at the end there. Anything with Trip is always welcome! He is the key to all of this, and I am excited to see how this one pans out. The only issue is it's over now and I have to wait LOL. If you like witty characters you will grow to love, crazy stuff like yetis and a stoner who is the smartest in the room, you will love this book and all books by Mark Tufo. Become on of us, one of the Talbot clan!
This is a great novel! I want to make that clear right up front. I read breathlessly as Mike and BT moved from one crisis to the next. And Trip's multi-parallel world experiences translated through his drug-induced altered consciousness added a lot of needed depth to the adventure. I loved every page—but, I really struggled over my five-star rating because the simple truth is that the sequel is not as good as the original novel. Since I can't up the first novel's rating to six stars, I had to decide whether or not to downgrade this one to four even though I loved it. As you can see, I decided not to, but I feel the need to go into a little bit of detail regarding my dilemma.
The first novel is a little bit mystery and a lot adventure story as the yeti make themselves known in backcountry Alaska and start ripping people apart and eating them. There are a lot of characters involved—plenty of redshirts to build tension, but most of those people actually got to become more than two-dimensional characters before they were killed off in Poseidon-Adventure like fashion. And that was important. Whether you loved them or hated them (and you did both), it mattered when those character died.
In this novel, we get very little of that kind of depth. We do have new cast members introduced, but most of the people killed off are simply not around long enough to get some paint on their red shirts and become individuals. On the other hand, if you view this as a transition novel, Trip gains a lot of depth, and the new character, Mad Jack, shows a lot of promise as a potentially fascinating individual. So, the story is not all one running battle—even though it pretty much is.
So, maybe this one should be four-and-a-half stars. I still can't decide. What I do know for certain is that I am already looking forward to The Devil's Desk 3 and I will probably reread volumes one and two to make sure I'm fully prepared to enjoy it when it comes out.
The gang is all together again! Trip is always on a trip as usual and is by far my favorite character. We get an introduction to a few new characters and Mad Jack might just be a reoccurring one in future stories. This story might not be quite as good as the first. Once Mike finds BT it is pretty much the same fight/flight action. I suppose the first one just had more depth and mystery that led to all the action and adventure. The yeti were “new” so to speak, making the first story more intriguing. However, if you enjoyed the first one, this one still won’t disappoint. It was quite entertaining and fun.
Another great entry into the Tufoverse. I saved the audio for this book for my camping trip, I listened to the entire thing in two evenings while sitting next to a campfire after a long day of hiking. It's not my favorite of the Talbot universe, but its another great story. With familiar characters, and enough winks and nods to long time readers to pique our interest and be excited for what is to come.
The gang is back together again plus a ton of names you love to recognize from all over the place. Constant humor plus adrenaline plus cringey grossness is exactly what you expect from a Tufo novel and it’s exactly what you get! Mike and BT against the world or rather against the Yetis with some help along the way in particular from our favorite dimension hopping hippie, Trip!
Bringing back beloved characters, Trip being Trip. Talbot being Talbot. Freaking Yetis. I can't believe that Mark Tufo did it again. Made me stay up late, and slack off at work to read this masterpiece. If I could give it 20 stars, it still wouldn't be enough.
Tufo always leaves me wanting more! I am always entertained by his yarns. This one was probably my favorite read from Mr. Tufo, and I’m the guy pre-ordering the zombie series as they come out! Read the first one, then come get ya some of this one!
I love all of Mike's "adventures"! This series is added to my favorite series list. All the different time lines and the way they are written is awesome. Again Mark Tufo doesn't let is readers and fans down. Can't wait for the next book!
I have read too many bigfoot/sasquatch/yeti books and hell I have one published out here as well. I loved the story lone but even more the characters. Witty and sarcastic - it gets the job done very time! Looking for more by the author now!
I’m never disappointed in anything by Tufo. This book grabs you from the beginning. Glad to see some old friends returning in this series. Only issue that I have is I wish he’d write faster!
Holy hell! The action in this book never stops! And the reappearance of some characters from Mark’s other series got my allergies going! Excellent job Mr Tufo yet again!!
I was dispointed a great deal it was 90% one prolonged running for your life fiction. You learn only a little bit more about the yetis in this book. It didn't have much character and situations depth compared to past novels like the Zombies Fallout Series books.
Really liked both Devil’s Desk books, and Trip is by far my favorite character- they all are, but Trip brings a sense of humor I thoroughly enjoyed. Great read to the end, and I can’t wait to read the next book.
The book felt like a fast read. It was over in no time. Loved seeing some old characters come back (?) from other timelines. I love Trip but, in this book he was too front and center. I felt he was becoming annoying. I don't want to not like the guy but dam!
I love this book, and I love that you keep some of the characters from zombie fallout which is my favorite. Just when I thought this was the end boom another book in the making. Keep up the great, work I love your books
It was a good story especially the person Trip.. Loved the humour in this story. The only thing I didn't care for was all the war stories . I am a vet and I not sure a vet with pstd could read this without some anxiety. Again love the story!
Great writer . I was thrilled when I I discovered this series. You wrote one of the most horrific scenes I’ve ever read…. And I read a ton of fiction, esp horror . I really love Mike and Tracy, and bBTand their relationships with each one
The tension in this episode of the series is ramped way up. So much is going wrong all at once and the battles come thick and fast. I can't wait for the next book.
