A laugh, a drunken challenge to me, captain of the guys’ hockey team, to kiss him, captain of the swim team.
It became the answer
It was a question I didn't even realize I'd been asking.
It became everything
He became everything. My beating heart. My every thought. What I held more precious than a future I’d been sacrificing for as long as I could remember.
And then it ended
We ended. Without another soul ever discovering we existed to begin with.
I was never supposed to come back.
But four years and a Slayers Hockey contract later, here I am...Wondering if I dare to risk it all again.
Hard core romantic, stress baker, and housekeeper non-extraordinaire, Mira Lyn Kelly is the USA TODAY bestselling author of more than a dozen sizzly love stories with over a million readers worldwide. Growing up in the Chicago area, she earned her degree in Fine Arts from Loyola University and met the love of her life while studying abroad in Rome, Italy… only to discover he’d been living right around the corner from her back home. Having spent her twenties working and playing in the Windy City, she’s now settled with her husband in rural Minnesota, where their four amazing children and two ridiculous dogs provide an excess of action and entertainment. When she isn’t reading, writing, or running the kids around, she loves watching the Chicago Blackhawks and action/adventure movies, blabbing with the girls, and cooking with her husband and friends.
Dirty Dare is book nine in the Slayers Hockey series by Mira Lyn Kelly. This is my first book by Mira and I am in love. I’m told this is her first MM romance and I find it hard to believe because it was just wonderful. So sweet, so sexy and so swoony. I wanted something lighthearted and this was perfect!
Cameron (Cam) Dorsey and Trevor Gulbrandsen are both twenty two years old. They went to high school together in Wildren, Cam captain of the swim team and Trevor captain of the hockey team. Cam’s dream was to stay in Wildren and run his dad’s sports store. Trevor’s was to play professional hockey. They had a very special connection back in high school and were in love. But the timing wasn’t right and Trevor was forced to walk away.
Now, four years later, Trevor is back in Wildren for a month’s vacation. He has no idea what will happen if he runs into Cam. But as soon as they see each other, that same special connection is still there. But will this time be the same as before? After the month is over, will Trevor be forced to walk away, leaving them both with broken hearts once again?
I just fell head over heels in love with this little book and with these two men. There is no angst, just sweet, sexy, swoony love. I have at least one other book of this author’s on my to read list so will definitely be reading more. But I sincerely hope she might consider writing more MM romance as well! If she does, I’ll be first in line to read it!
Ok well, this was… unfortunate. I’ve read books from this series back when I read MF romance and liked them so to see this author release a MM romance set in that world intrigued me however this is her first MM book and it shows. As much as I like when authors try to change it up and switch genres, some should stick to what they know and that’s very much the case here. This book felt like I was reading MF romance and the sex scenes made it even worse. This felt very stilted and one dimensional even for a novella and I regret picking it up.
Cam and Trev were dared to kiss at a party 4 years ago. They both had aha! moments and started dating for about two weeks but Cam wasn’t ready to come out and with Trev leaving to play hockey it fizzled out before it could really get started. Fast forward 4 years and Trev is back in town in-between contracts and these two meet back up. I would have liked a prologue that had the dare with them kissing because they kept mentioning that time but since we don’t see it on page, I never really cared or could get on board with their past. They spend a few days together, some physical shit happens and within 3 days are in love with Trev saying he’s going to give up his dream of playing hockey. 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️ I didn’t feel their connection and the sex scenes would have been so much better if they faded to black which is something I never say but these were just not done well. They weren’t the worst I’ve ever read but I could tell this author had no idea how to write them and a lot of the dialogue was just weird.
Needless to say this didn’t work for me and the only positive reviews seem to be arcs and people who only read this because it’s in a series they love but for seasoned MM readers? I think this will be a chore to read and quite boring. I was wasn’t going to one star this but I can’t think of a single thing I liked about it so I can’t rate it any higher. 🤷🏻♀️
Mostly I felt like I had missed half the story. In my head, in order to write a second chance, you need to write a first chance first, and it wasn’t there.
It’s frustrating because some of the best parts of Trev and Cam’s love story were left out or just hinted at. The dare, first, which doesn’t even deserve its own scene. Trevor’s realization about his sexuality. Their strong first love. The secret. The break up. All of that needed to be on page, and not just because they’d have been great.
But mostly because then I could relate to the characters and their struggles, and I could understand their quick love. Here I was forced to believe the author that they loved each other and weren’t just attracted to each other. They had only a few scenes where they connected outside of the bed–and those scenes were cute, doubly frustrating.
That doesn’t mean that there weren’t interesting things in this story. I especially loved Trevor’s feelings of instability and his fear for his future. Trying to build a life while not knowing where he’ll be in a month, in a year. And the choice he has to make.
It’s really a story about choices. And it was nice seeing both of those men supporting each other’s choices.
As for their intimacy, there was passion, and quite a few sexy scenes for such a short story. You won’t hear me complain.

MM and loved it! Struggle of being with first love and forbidden relationship. Walking away, but if the chance comes again? Loved the story lines and loved that short but not rushed.
If you’re an *avid* MM romance reader, you’re going to find this novella to be on the tamer side of *spicy* but the perfect side of *emotion*. That I know of, this is Mira’s first gay romance, and she did a phenomenal job with it. Would I have preferred it to be a more in-depth story? Sure, but not at the expense of the author’s talent. As I said, I’m pretty sure this is Mira’s first dip into gay romance and as such, short was the perfect way to go. But what do I know, I’m not an author LOL
Now, about this little morsel of goodness … Mira! There is nothing you cannot write! This story was genuine and comfortable and easy to fall into for a couple of hours. Not overly dramatic yet highly emotional in an understated way. My heart was super full reading this story and it put a huge smile on my face! But maaaaaaaaaaan, you gotta give us more of these two in the future because I LOVE THEM! *heart eyes*
4.5 rounded to 5 because half stars are not a thing!!
Trevor and Cam were dared to kiss back in highschool and neither one has been able to forget it, even four years later. Now Trevor is back in town and sees Cam at a get-together and the two can't stop thinking about each other.
I really enjoyed this novela. It is a fast read without feeling like anything important is missing. I loved how you could feel the emotions between Trevor and Cam. They get their second chance at love and it's adorable and everything I was hoping it would be.
The only thing I didn't like, and I'm not taking a star off because it's not something the author did, is that I kept getting the two main characters confused. This is my first MM book, but I also wouldn't let that deter me from reading another.
This was a nice little surprise while we wait for Boomer's book! I really (really, really) hope we get to see more of Trevor and Cam!
THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU IF: You' think you might be interested in mm romance - this would be a good starter
I received an ARC of this book. All views are my own.
This is my first M/M romance, and I think it was better because it's part of a series that I love. I will admit that maybe M/Ms aren't for me, but I am glad that I read this because Trev and Cam are absolutely adorable, and they deserved their happy ending after so many years. It was nice to veer a little outside of my comfort zone, read a genre I have never read before.
Back in high school, Trevor and Cam sort of ran in the same circles, and one fateful night they were dared to kiss. That was all it took. but their relationship was over before anyone else even knew about it. Trevor leaves town to play hockey, while Cam ends up working for this father. But four years later, when Trevor comes back to town, he's hesitant to reconnect with Cam. But it was only a matter of time before they both give in. They were so sweet with each other!
This read was very emotional - a second chance done right!
I enjoyed the novella length of this story. It suited the narrative of this second chance romance with a dual POV. There was no slow burn as the MCs had been apart for four years, post high school graduation, and had been thinking about each other pretty much the entire time. Their getting back together wasn’t insta, either, and there were good scenes of them running into each other at reunion parties and around the town, and best of all, while night swimming in a lake. The writing thrummed with sexual tension and the frustration of missed opportunities of the past and confusion about same sex attraction. Both these attractive young men are athletes, Cam with swimming and Trevor with professional hockey. I liked their interactions about talking about the past and their desire to stay together, even though they are not sure how. The drama comes from some holding back of feelings of not wanting to disrupt each other’s life when Trevor has to leave after his short hockey hiatus. It was a very nice scene when they both decide to ‘throw their heart over the bar’ and be together. Clear writing and some hot sex made for a good read.
This was…fine? My least favourite in the series for sure, but I’m not really a novella or a second chance or an MM romance girlie, so I think it was always going to be.
It also didn’t help that for the first 10-15% I had no idea who these characters were. I just feel like if we’re going to do a spin off novella, it probably shouldn’t be the only MM and the only one away from the team and about a character we vaguely heard about it one book - it just really leads to a sense of disconnect and lack of care/investment in the characters and story.
I absolutely love this series by Mira Lyn Kelly. The series includes short, sweet and spicy hockey romances. I am obsessed with each one.
This is one is a novella and is a M/M. It’s a cute second chance romance between Trevor and Cam. Their history dates back to when they had an encounter at their graduation party. Now, four years later, Trevor is back in his small town, and upon reuniting with Cam, he sees that all the feelings are still there. Since this is a novella the pacing is fast and everything happens quickly, but it’s still so cute and charming.
The story of these two was short and easy to read, and since they already had a history, it didn't feel forced at all. Thank you to Wordsmith Publicity and Mira for the eARC.
This was a cute, lovely second chance short novella!!!

This M/M Romance was not it. A rushed novella that didn’t have any feelings to the relationship between both men. This wasn’t a well written M/M hockey romance in my opinion.
The Slayers Hockey series is one of my all time favorites and when I saw that we were getting an MM novella added to the series I was ecstatic. I adored Cam and Trevor so much. You could really feel their longing for each other and when they reconnected you could just tell there was no way they’d be able to resist each other even though their paths weren’t exactly going to the same way. I just really loved watching these two get their second chance. The only complaint I really have (and it’s not even one) is that I wish the novella was longer! I’d have loved to see Cam meet the team. All in all this was an amazing edition to the series. I can’t wait for the next installment!
I was ready for it to be over. I do not think the plot was well written, it felt like you were missing so much, and the characters were just oddly put together.
Trevor and Cam's reunion isn't exactly the most hopeful and positive one Trevor (or Cam) could have wished for. But though Cam rejected him all those years ago, it ended up being good for Trevor, helped him figure himself and his identity out. Now it's on Cam to choose them finally.
Cam may have not been sure of himself before, but Trevor's back, looking even more beautiful than before, offering himself up. Will he, can he, open himself back up to what will most certainly end badly for his heart?
Whew! Short, sweet and hot - this is a sweet and delicious second chance novella in the Slayers world. I hope Mira writes more about these two because I fell in love with them and the way they were head over heels for each other.
*ARC Review: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.* Part of the Slayers Hockey series, but this novella can be read as a standalone and is the only MM. At a party after high school graduation, the captains of the hockey team (Trevor) and swim team (Cam) were dared to kiss. That kiss led to such a wildfire of attraction that Trevor was ready to stay in their small town, come out, and give up his hockey dreams. Even though Cam had also fallen hard, he wasn’t ready to come out to his dad and the rest of the town. After four years, Trevor is back home to spend a month of his offseason at the house on the lake where he first fell for Cam. Things I Loved: 🩵The fact that this is a novella and things happen pretty quickly. I’m not a slow burn kinda woman, so the pace was perfect for me. 🖤Trevor’s a sweetheart in all situations. Even though his ex cheated on him and they broke up months ago, Trevor loyally keeps their relationship a secret because his ex was not out then and has no plans to be in the future. 🩵The conversation Trev and Cam have to clear the air about their breakup at age 18 was open and honest, and neither one of them were holding onto grudges. 🖤They’re not shy about admitting they still want each other and also have open dialogue about the fact that Trevor is only temporarily in town. 🩵The connection between Trevor and Cam is *chef’s kiss* perfect. 🖤The tension that builds as their physical and emotional connection deepens as their time together runs out. 🩵The surprise guest appearance in the second to last chapter, how Cam steps in to help handle the situation, and the surprise declarations that happen as a result. I really loved reading about Trevor and Cam’s reunion and how their feelings for each other picked up right where they left off. The only downside: I want so much more of their story! I loved them together and could read several more of their books exploring what happens next for them! Perfect read if you’re looking for something light and fun in between your longer angsty reads!
This is a really quick read set in the Slayers hockey world that follows Trevor and Cam. Like always, Mira does not disappoint. It has the romance, the hockey, the humor and the connection you love between characters.
This book follows Trevor and Cam and how after four years, they find their way back to each other. Trevor and Cam went to high school together and were both captains of their sports (hockey and swimming respectively). When they were dared at an end of year party to kiss, things took a turn for them. Cam knew he was gay but was afraid of coming out especially to his father. Trevor didn't realize he was emotionally and physically attracted to guys until he started noticing Cam. When Trevor was leaving to go start his professional hockey career after high school, he was willing to throw it all away to make it work with Cam. But Cam wasn't ready to be out or risk it so Trevor left. Now it's four year slater and Trevor is back in town while he waits to see where his hockey career will take him. Immediately him and Cam reconnect and it is game on when Trevor realizes that Cam is now out to everyone. There is no holding back. The only major question is what is going to happen to them when Trevor's four weeks are up and he has to leave Cam. Will he give up his career? Will they work long distance? Will Cam go with him? All things they have to decide.
A really cute, fast read. Definitely would recommend if you are following the Slayers world.
This is a quick little novella with a MM love story. I absolutely loved it! This is a second chance right person, wrong time trope and is the story of Trevor (Gullsy from previous stories) and Cam. These two had met in high school and had a very strong connection but neither was in a place to become more serious. This story takes place four years later and they are more mature and settled in their lives and careers. Even though they didn’t keep in touch during the four year separation, the friendship and feelings are still strong so they are able to immediately reconnect. They have grown a lot and now value the importance of the other person and don’t want to waste any more time. You cannot stop yourself from rooting for them to find their HEA.
The emotions in this story were strong and I could just feel everything they felt for each other. The whole time that I was reading I found myself smiling and thinking wow, these two are just IT! With zero angst, these two just needed to figure out how to navigate each other, their little town and their future. I believe this was a true romance. It all seemed simple and easy.
I’ve not read many MM stories and wasn’t sure what I would think but the emotions were strong and I found myself getting sucked into their story. There was so much heart in this story that I found myself getting sad the closer I got to the end. I wish the ending were a bit longer so that we would see how they navigated their path forward, but maybe we will see glimpses of them in future Slayer stories. Excellent read and not to be missed!
Trevor just wrapped up a season with the Chicago Slayers, and thought life couldn’t be better…..then his boyfriend ends their super secret relationship. Packing up his broken heart he heads for his hometown. First off, I love how Mira Lynn described this lovely little lakeside town. Which by the way reminds me so much of quiet little sleepy lakeside towns in Minnesota! Cam thought that Trevor was just part of his past, but when he blows into town he is sort of thrown for a loop! He has always had a thing for Trevor, but his life is in his quiet little hometown. Cam tries to stick to his plan but of course that doesn’t work as Trevor seems to always be there. I love how this novella progressed. It is clear that the pair had some shared history, but both have grown and changed in the years that they’ve been apart. This pair have an amazing spark, and it is a miracle they could keep their hands off one another for a second when they are together. The best way that I can describe Cam and Trevor is they are both sweet gooey cinnamon roll characters that are not afraid of emotions…and with a little encouragement they share those emotions. I loved Cam and Trevor and hope that we get to see more and more of them in the future because they are so amazing! This novella is a perfect glimpse into Mira Lynn Kelly’s hockey romance series. This book is full heart and needs to be on your Kindle ASAP!
I’m not usually one for second-chance romances, especially ones where someone messes up big time. In this case, I’ll make an exception. After playing his first season of professional hockey with the Chicago Slayers, Trevor heads back to his hometown. His spot on the Slayers isn’t guaranteed and his life with the Chicago farm team is rocky at best. Everything in his life is uncertain from where he’s going to be playing to where he’ll end up living. He just wants some peace and quiet.
Of course, being a hometown hero hockey star doesn’t lend to much quiet and running into your secret ex-boyfriend, the one you were willing to dump your entire future for, doesn’t leave much room for relaxation.
Kelly managed to pack a lot of emotional angst, longing, and spice into such a short novella. You can’t help but root for them, or roll your eyes when Cam insists it’ll be okay because this relationship has a set end date and he couldn’t possibly fall and get hurt (laughs at poor, poor silly Cam). This story has all of the humor and heart as the rest of the Slayers Hockey series and is a great peek at a character we don’t actually get to see in previous books. All of that, plus no third-act breakup makes this one of my favorites in the series.
#dirtydare is a new novella that’s associated with the #slayershockeyseries by @miralynkelly
This is a sweet, low angst, first love novella. It’s based in a small town where both characters are from. Trevor is trying to get some distance after a breakup and the need to build up his confidence. He needs some time alone where he can escape, at least he hopes. But being back here brings back the memories of Cam. The first guy he really felt something for, after their kiss started as a dare back in high school. Cam lives here and works in his family shop, he’s more in tuned with himself than he had been and is living life how he wants. A lot has changed since they last saw each other, will their feelings rekindle or has their ship sailed?
I really liked the book. It’s cute with very little angst. It was a quick read and gave me the small town, first love vibe I wanted. Although it was part of the slayers series, it didn’t feel like a huge part of it, maybe more of a spin off. There’s a couple mentions of the team and some players. I wish there was more hockey involved, but that’s on me. Other than that, very enjoyable and recommend. (Especially the rest of the series!)
Mira Lynn Kelly is back with with another fantastic addition to her Slayers Hockey Series . Dirty Dare is a novella ( set in the Slayers Hockey word and what a fantastic read it was and is .I’m not typically someone who enjoys novellas by any means ; but Mira Happens to be one of my all time favorites authors and I’m a sucker for a sports / M/M / second chance romance with all the feels . I was a goner the moment I met Trev and Cam . No realty these guys are just so likable and relatable it’s pretty much impossible not to become 100% invested , it all starts with a challenge ; the captain of the Hockey team is dared to kiss the Captain of the swim team they became each others everything and then outta nowhere it was taken away just as quickly . Leaving a trail of heartbreak . Fact forward - 4 years later fate brings Trev and Cam back into each others orbits . Will they get their second chance at a happily ever after ? Will they Risk everything for love ? Angst , humor , witty banter , romance , love , obstacles, heartbreaking and heartfelt, unexpected surprises, off the charts chemistry, drama, family, friendships, it has it all in spades
Sweet and spicy, Dirty Dare is delightfully romantic at times and plenty steamy. The story begins four years after Trevor and Cam shared something because of a dare. They reunite, and things are realized and lead to more. The trouble is that Trevor is only back home temporarily, and it leaves his and Cam’s relationship in question.
I love these two! They both feel so real in how Kelly presents their characters, but then the issues they face seem appropriate for their story, too. They’re both instantly likeable and believable as characters that have are involved, and their situation and the emotions that go along with it feels right for them. I enjoyed the way Trevor and Cam played off each other, and reading all they deal with in trying for their HEA but without any unnecessary angst is part of what makes this couple so endearing.
This is a fast but cute story of two people that weren’t ready for each other when they were younger but show that second chances can happen. If you’re in the mood for a book that’s quick and will leave you with a smile, then I wholeheartedly suggest it.
𝐁𝐎𝐎𝐊 𝐓𝐈𝐓𝐋𝐄: Dirty Dare 𝐀𝐔𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐑: Mira Lyn Kelly @miralynkelly
𝐌𝐘 𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇𝐓𝐒: This was one of those romances that just made you smile after reading it. It has zero angst and a beautiful happily-ever-after that made my heart happy.
This gorgeous second chance romance was full to bursting with delicious steamy scenes, sweet moments that made me melt & two characters you'll root for from the beginning. I loved it. I highly recommend grabbing Trevor & Cams' love story immediately.
Dirty Dare is the latest in the Slayers Hockey series. It is a complicated second chance MM romance.
Trevor is a hockey player trying to get into the NHL permanently. He is very close to that goal but he's spent most of his time on the farm team. He comes back to Wildren to get away. Cam is the one that got away. They had a brief intense relationship. They meet up again when Trevor visits. Is there still something simmering beneath the surface?
There are a slew of secondary characters throughout this book and I think their quirky traits and friendly charms help move the plot along. They also provide some extra entertainment and laughs.
This was a sweet, low angst romance between two hot guys with big hearts and hopes and dreams. There is no cheating, no obvious OM/OW drama, and a romantic HEA. I loved this story because it was a well written story that had heart. These two just wanted what most of us want. Someone to love us and spend our lives with. Yes, I do recommend this book and I am giving it four warm and fuzzy stars.
A bite-sized M/M spicy novella treat full of emotion, heat, discovery, acceptance, and hope. Not to mention...
🏒 A sexy Hockey Player 🏒 A sexy Swimmer 🏒 Small Town vibe 🏒 Hot chemistry 🏒 Dual POV 🏒 Second Chance 🏒 Secret Romance
☕🔥🔥🔥 A Spicy read is best enjoyed with your favorite iced beverage, a cozy chair, and maybe a fan. Characters comfortably express their desire with kissing and passionate exploration. If you're looking for a medium level of heat this should be a satisfying read.
Cam and Trevor will reconnect, one openly out while the other still figuring out his sexuality. Is it possible the flame still burns after a high school dare all those years ago?
If you are looking for something with heart, lots of emotion, spicy chemistry, and a fast paced plot this is for you.
Mira, please tell me these characters will find their way into future Slayer books!
Thank you Mira Lyn Kelly for the advance reader copy for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

This is a quick, low angst read that has plenty of story and steam. It’s told from a dual pov making it easy to love both Trev and Cam. They have history and when they cross paths again the chemistry is still there. I loved it.
I highly recommend this novella, and need to read more of the Slayers Series.
