I've been thinking about this review a lot lately. While my initial 1-star rating still stands, the way that I went about this review overall is something I'm not happy with, so I'm rewriting and considering better ways to say what I thought of the book.
My biggest issues with this book were and still are as follows: the book doesn't present a cure (there is currently no known cure), but rather a compilation of basic information and strategies that you can find online for free and it's nearly carbon copy of her other books for other body-focused repetitive behaviours, such as hair pulling disorder (trichotillomania). A friend of mine had a copy of her book "Eyelash Pulling: How to Cure Eyelash and Eyebrow Trichotillomania," and we did a side-by-side comparison and found many areas were copied and pasted.
When I originally came across the copying, I was furious. I actually confronted Foxwell via email (something that I'm not proud of now), and she had mentioned that some areas were similar because she knew the information was applicable for many BFRBs, but she wanted to have individual works tailored for each BFRB, rather than just a blanket book for everyone to muddle through. Reflecting back, I can appreciate that sentiment and the importance of that kind of sectioning. I can also appreciate how having a online resources compiled into one book might be helpful.
All the same, I don't think it's worth the money and the book didn't have a lot of overall value for me. It's one I wouldn't recommend to others.
Thank goodness I got this book at the library and didn't waste ten bucks on a 30 page book of nothingness. Does this even qualify as a book?? More like a pamphlet of general facts that you might find in a doctor's waiting room. But I'm pretty sure the pamphlets at the doctor's office have better information than this ridiculous book! First of all, Amy Foxwell is not even remotely qualified to write on the subject. She openly writes that she has never even received any professional help. Not only that, she lists facts and statistics but does not include a single reference. Yup, that's what we call plagiarism. Are we to expect that Foxwell came up with all of this information out of her own research and expertise?! Ha! Laughable. This book is the biggest scam ever. I'm pretty sure she just Googled "dermatillomania" and put together a badly written high school essay (which she would have failed). Oh, and I've gotta love this- Pick Stop Oil. LOL! Yeah, that's already been invented. Sorry! It's what we call "lotion," "aromatherapy," and "massage oil." I can get a $2 bottle at the local pharmacy. Don't waste your time with this book OR this author. She is just out to make money with her scam.
Skin picking is an emotional problem caused by stress. As all disorders, it's not an easy fix but with the right guide, it can be curable. I've read a couple of Amy Foxwell's work and I find her guides to be extremely informative and useful. Her books can be referred too time and time again. Her own experience and how she over came this disorder are hands on experience that seemed to have worked for her as an "ex picker". My favorite part of the book was the natural remedies and diet section. Highly recommended.
