I discovered this book while reading the novel How to Read a Book. I often look up books that are discovered as part of other novels. This book is unique in that you learn about this fictional town through 200 plus deceased citizens who tell their individual stories through monologues they write after their deaths. This book was published in 1915. Some of the monologues are more like poetry. I was engaged by their stories and the history of the town they shared by telling about their lives! So happy to read their abbreviated versions of their lives in Spoon River. Definitely read the 1915 version which was republished in 1992.
While reading How to Read a Book this collection of epitaph-like poems was discussed in one of their book groups. I was intrigued that this book, originally published in 1915 and set in Illinois, was a classic I had not heard of. Each chapter is a monologue/eulogy told from the perspective of the person who had died and was buried in Spoon River, Illinois. Some were quite humorous, others tragic, all were captivating. So glad I came upon this classic- I also got a free version of the audio book that was read by a talented troupe of actors who brought those dead voices back to life with incredible vivacity. I loved going back and forth between print and audio.
