might give this another go at some point, it was a bit more serious/'academic' than i expected so i wasnt really in the mindset needed for this.

from as far as i got through it, a lot of the stories mentioned were from beyond St Albans and knowing theres books for other towns in Herts and also Beds, does make me wonder how much each of those books are repeating a lot of the same things but this is pure speculation as i didnt finish this, and havent read the others. Does feel like a broader Herts/Beds book wouldve been more suitable than multiple focussed on certain towns within.

also just noticed that on recent releases from this author he uses gen ai for the covers, which is a big thumbs down for me and raises additional questions about artistic integrity

You got to be interested in the historical and architectural chitchat (or live in St. Albans of course) to enjoy this book. The "spooky" stuff doesn't fill half the pages, and isn't all that ghostly either - which is a minus if you want to be chilled to your rattling bones, but a plus if you dislike cheap sensationalism. This book is "for real". If details ain't to be had it doesn't exaggerate, but it doesn't take itself so seriously that it can't be lighthearted either. It being well written is another plus.
