A family carrying ice skates passes villages, farms, and forests on the way to a frozen lake high in the hills. Fifteen paintings accompany brief descriptive text.
I loved it! The color, the descriptive narrative, the Grandma Moses style of artwork, it all beautifully captures the essence of winter charm. Such a delightful, cozy read.

A beautiful folk art illustrated title done in 1982 that does not appeal to young of 2019. The illustrations were done by a 73 year old folk artist from Georgia with a national reputation. How wonderful to place that type of art in front of young children. The story line is about going to a remote mountain pond for wintertime activities, ice skating, ice fishing, and bonfires.
I love the line, “up where trees are free from curbs and corners”
This book was featured on the once popular program Reading Rainbow.
There's not much to this tale of a day spent ice skating and enjoying the wintry outdoors, however, if you're a fan of Mattie Lou O'Kelley's artwork, this one's a treasure.
I LOVE this book! It describes how to get to the secret "winter place," which is a frozen lake alive with people skating and ice fishing and sunken down in a hard to find valley. Our family had a secret orchard in CT that you had to hike into, so we know the joys of a secret "summer place."
Beautifully filled with colorful paintings by Mattie Lou O'Kelley. After reading, Bailey and I went back to the beginning and played " I Spy" with each of the paintings of the towns and villages.
