Slimani was born in Rabat, Morocco and studied later political science and media studies in Paris. After that she temporarily considered a career as an actress and began to work as a journalist for the magazine Jeune Afrique. In 2014 she published her first novel Dans le jardin de l’ogre, which two years later was followed by the psychological thriller Chanson douce. The latter quickly turned into a bestseller with over 450,000 copies printed within a year even before the book was awarded the Prix Goncourt.

A biographical story that explores the position of women in the Arab world. It shows how certain choices can influence an entire life.
However, I didn’t find much new information, and the plot was not very engaging. It was also unclear to me what conclusion I was supposed to draw after finishing the book. Overall, it left me with a somewhat fragmented and rather hopeless feeling, without much sense of resolution or hope 😢

Ble ikke helt klok på denne boka. En historie, mange historier, flettet sammen. Marokko på 50-tallet. Interessant og kanskje spennende, men på en underlig måte også ganske kjedelig. Kanskje det var jeg som ikke passet til denne boka akkurat nå?
