Jedna noc. Szóstka nieznajomych. Czy upiorna zjawa naprawdę istnieje? A może mordercą jest jedno z nich?

Trzecia powieść królowej młodzieżowego horroru, Cynthii Murphy, autorki „Czeka cię śmierć” oraz „Wygraj, przegraj, zabij, zgiń”, trzyma czytelnika w niepewności aż do ostatniej strony.

You know those books that you are confident you will enjoy but then...all of a sudden you are super addicted and the book unexpectedly becomes one of your favorites? This is one of them.

Truly, I had so much fun with this book, the story and the wonderfully integrated mixed media bits.

A group of strangers that met at Deddit (a message board website for horror fans) decide to play a game. They discuss the legend of The Midnight Man and the game that was created around it. So of course they think it would be a great idea to play The Midnight Game and decide to meet for the first time at night to play. What could go wrong. It is probably just an old tale, right?

To play the game there are certain rules that you need to follow if you want to stay alive. As the characters start to play the game, they soon realize that their lives might be in real danger.

Filled with horror, tension and unexpected twists, this book will have you hooked from page one and it will be for sure impossible to put down. Will you be able to resist playing the game?

“Do you want to play a game?”

————about the book————

Age: YA
Genres: thriller, horror, mystery, mystery thriller,
Writing: 7/10
Quotes: 3/10
World building: n/a
Characters: 6/10
Romance: 5/10
My rating: 6/10

TRIGGER WARNINGS: death/dying, body horror, gore, violence, murder, mentions of suicide, etc.

———my feelings———

When a group of strangers who met on a creepy Deddit thread decide to meet up in real life, they only have one objective in mind: to summon the Midnight Man.
But once you start The Midnight Game, you must finish it.
Because there’s no other way out...

I don’t know why I read horror thrillers.
It doesn’t happen very often, but sometimes I pick one up...
And I’m the girl who jumps a foot at any jumpscare.
I’m very easily terrified.
But this wasn’t actually that scary.
I was more disgusted than terrified...some of the gory descriptions are very vivid.
The concept of the book intrigued me from the start, especially the whole paranormal aspect. The creepy voices? Signing your soul over to the game?
While some of the twists were a little obvious, it was the kind of obvious that makes you feel smart for figuring something out!
It’s not anything that I haven’t read before, but I was shocked at how brutal it was.
The characters weren’t particularly likeable...but thriller characters never are.
But I have to say, my favourite was Ellie.
She’s so kind, and she really felt like someone you could be friends with, someone who cares even when no one else does.
I’ve read the author’s other books, and was not widely impressed...but this one was far better.
It was still a little predictable, but far more edge-of-your-seat, and nerve wracking!
I’m not entirely sure if I can call if fun, exactly, but it was just one of those books that are fast to read and enjoyable.
I’ve read far better thrillers, but I’ve also read far worse ones, so this is somewhere in the middle.

———characters ———

I don’t really feel like I can talk about my thoughts for the characters without spoiling major plotlines...so I’ll just leave it right now.

————quotes————

Books like these aren’t exactly quotable...so no quotes either!

———random extra thoughts———

I need to reread my favourite YA horror thriller again soon...I miss being terrified.

Thanks for reading ❤️

Definitely an entertaining and bingable book. Really liked the slight mixed media in this with deddit posts and the twist was fun. Not quite a 4 stars but enjoyed it. Anyone playing those type of games creeps me out. I rather not play and stay safe than to try them and find out.

You all need to stop lying with the 5 star reviews.

I loved the map and the first 150 pages of the book where things made sense and weren’t just straight up stupid.

Toni made me almost throw the book across the room at least 3 times. You are not badass, you are just ass.

I believe using SA as some sort of plot in a supposedly horror/thriller book is kind of whack as well. Too much filler. Were you just trying to reach a certain word count? The ending was rushed and was bad. The back on forth with whether or not the The Midnight Man is real or not, then heavily implying he’s not, but then making him real simply to kill off both murderers cause the group was too stupid to do that.

Reece being the murderer? too obvious.
Toni being his accomplice? not too obvious but actually stupid.

“I want to keep Reece happy” That really does make a lot of sense!! I mean I would also try and make out with a different guy and then run off and try to fully blame my beloved for all the murdering knowing damn well I was just as involved in this as him.

"Do you want to play a game?"

This is a six POV book, told by the POV´s of Ellie, Mei, Callum, Toni, Hugo and Reece.

I think out of the six main characters I definitely liked Ellie and Mei the best. Ellie is really headstrong and really stood up for the others, which is something I relate to a lot. With Mei we have the smart cookie, with Callum the mysterious quiet guy, Toni is the goth girl, Hugo the posh boy and Reece the jock. I loved their interactions and seeing how each of them behaved. I loved how as the book progressed you slowly get to know more about their backstories and why each of them ended up playing the game.

There were not really any side characters in this book, so I can´t judge it on that.

The writing style of this book was a bit different. Between each POV chapter you get a typ of chat log or blog entry that tells you more of the backstory. The book switches a bit between past and present so to speak. It was fast paced and really action packed. I originally wanted to save half of the book for tomorrow to read, but I just couldn´t stop reading. By a third of the book I was really hooked to the story. I liked the plot twists and kept guessing along. I manage to guess two or three but a few I didn´t see coming.

Overall it was an entertaining read that kept me hooked until the end.

trigger warnings: mentions of suicide, mentions of sexual assault, mentions of rape, murder

Thank you to Delacorte Press and Cynthia Murphy for my copy of The Midnight Game. This premise was EVERYTHING! It was about a group of people who meet on “Deddit” and are trying to learn about creepy games not to play. One of those is The Midnight Game. What are the rules? Do not turn on the lights. Do not go to sleep. Do not leave the building. Otherwise, the Midnight Man will get you. Once you start you have to finish, and these strangers are in for wild ride.

Thoughts: I loved the play on the creepy pasta/reddit culture. This was such a fun premise and I got behind it immediately. The “games you shouldn’t play” subdeddit was a great way to break up the chapters and I was here for it. The characters were a bit flat for me, but this book was easy to consume quickly and a lot of fun. 4-stars.

this was GORRRYYYY. for a YA book i was honestly surprised at the brutality of the deaths and the sensitive topics that were mentioned. i didn’t like how a certain character was glorified as being “not too bad” after it was revealed he assaulted a girl the year prior. that aside though, everything else was handled well in my opinion. definitely one to pick up if you like YA horror/thriller that has a bit more of a kick to it.

Admittedly, I think I am a bit old compared to the target market for this book. And I think that is why I didn't end up enjoying it as much as I thought I would. The premise sounded interesting, and hopefully creepy. A group of six people meet online, through their shared interest in horror. They start discussing creepy games that you can play, and then agree to meet up and play one: The Midnight Game. It's kind of a mix of urban legends along with a group of people getting far more than they bargained for. So, why didn't this work out for me?

The first issue that I had with this book was how it was written. You have chapters from different characters POV, but you also have excerpts which are meant to show threads on a social media platform. Whilst this kind of layout can work, for some reason I just found this really bitty - it seemed to interrupt the flow of the main action, rather than adding anything to it. Because of this, for a long time, the only creepy aspect of the story was the thought of a deserted building at night, and messing with things you possibly don't understand. Other than that, this book was not scary at all. There aren't really any great plot twists either, so I came away from this feeling very underwhelmed. Even for a young adult book, it felt quite immature.

This turned out to be a book which was a relatively easy, quick read whilst I was away, but it is definitely not one that I would rush to recommend to others. Sorry!

I received a copy of The Midnight Game as a bookseller, and I was extremely excited about it. I’m a big fan of old ghost stories and things that go bump in the night. I think the concept of this book is brilliant and brought back memories of being scared of the midnight man himself after reading creepypastas too late.

!!SPOILERS AHEAD!!

Mei was my favourite character out of the main five (I will never stop judging Ellie for leaving her), she reminded me of myself when I was younger; refusing to look in mirrors in fear of a face looking back at me. Toni came in a close second, I’m always a fan of badass girlies, and Murphy does a fantastic job covering up the ulterior motives of the dynamic -murdering- duo Toni and Reece. Being that it is seemingly written so younger and older readers can enjoy, it balances out the horror with romance tropes and a few jokes here and there. I have to say I would’ve preferred this type of book to be written in a 18+ fashion and would absolutely LOVE Murphy to do a take on another age old creepy game but writing for a more mature audience.
Although the ending wrapped up nicely, I was, to be honest, a little dissatisfied with Ellie and Callum becoming a couple. Albeit probably a trauma response. It did set up the (hopefully, fingers crossed, I need a sequel) groundwork for a second book nicely, but I feel the ending would’ve been just as powerful without them being in a relationship. Perhaps I’m just a sucker for the heartbroken, my lover is dead, trope.
I also loved the diversity within the book, it brought a lot more life to the characters. Along with that, I appreciated the character development of Ellie and as the book went on I liked her more and more.

Overall I enjoyed my time reading The Midnight Game and it gave me so much nostalgia. 3.5/5 stars ⭑ and I’m looking forward to reading more of Cynthia Murphy in the future.

A jednak!

this book was just… eh?

slight spoilers here ig. everything i mention here is pretty obvious as a ‘plot twist’

the ideas of the mixed media parts with threads, emails, and texts were cool, but i feel as if they added nothing to the plot as we found out everything in them basically on the next page of the actual book. they only broke up the action and prevented me from getting fully engrossed in the plot as it occurred in fits and starts.
the plot twist was, imo, stupid, and had very little foreshadowing (derogatory). also the author needed to get a grip on whether or not the midnight man was real. he just became a plot device at the end and i mourn the lost potential of this actually kinda cool entity. also she bends and twists the rules of his character purely to serve her plot, meaning some characters have huge plot armour regarding him. they mention this but just in a throwaway line like ‘kinda wild he left us alone even when we broke his rules?!’
also the characters were way to one dimensional, and the 6 povs didn’t work. you could tell the author favoured some over others so it was just pointless and stupid. i didn’t really care about most of the cast, they just had no depth i think. also no matter how hard she tried she could not get me to sympathise with a rapist who were told ruined someone’s life. the attempt at commentary on rape culture was just shit. and a lot of the characters were 1 dimensional stereotypes.

A group goes to a primary school at midnight to play “the midnight game” where they carry candles that can’t go out. If they do go out they need to quickly get inside a salt circle to protect them from the midnight man. They can’t leave the building until the game is over.

In my view too much time spent on other games on line listening to their wacky names a thousand times.

do yourself a favor. don’t think too much into it. this was a fun YA horror with a couple twists i didn’t see coming but was very happy they came.

-loved the deddit board
-the scary game explanations were so fun they might have been my fav parts
-characters were mostly insufferable
-tired of the goth girl is a bitch trope
-fast paced
-creepy
-i jumped a few times while reading this when my boyfriends cat made an unexpected noise or movement in his quiet apartment
-would absolutely make a great movie, in a similar style of the fear street movies

I found the plot of this book quite compelling and thoroughly enjoyed the journey it took me on. However, I must confess, I was yearning for a greater sense of fear to permeate the pages. I had hoped for a spine-chilling experience that would leave me on the edge of my seat, heart racing in suspense.
