I wish I could say I loved this book. I went into this excited and eager to read a fun rom-com that would ease my nerves, but unfortunately, I was let down.

The Wish List details the life of an anxious and closed off bookworm who has an obsessive tendency with counting. She’s forced to go to therapy by her parents because of her lack of romantic relationships, and there, THE wish list is born. Soon after, she meets what she presumes is the perfect man for her and further journeys on with the concept of love and relationships in general, while still tackling her work life and bridezilla step-sister.

The premise interested me, a wish list and a lonely bookworm who has a strange habit? Sign me up! But the story itself did not deliver. It was very basic and didn’t bring anything new to the table. It just felt like something I’d read a million times before, and it could’ve been done much better. I wish there had been more twists, and that the ones that were included in the story weren’t so expected or easy to guess. By the second chapter, I had already penned what would happen, and it went in the route I though it would.

As I write this review, I have already forgotten the love interest’s name, which is always a bad sign for a romance novel, or any novel in general. The character’s were dull and the “romance” was pushed onto the reader with little to no development. There was nothing that held my attention, nor any character I felt attached to or loved/loathed. We never got to know the character’s intentions and they felt very one dimensional.

I will say that the author’s writing flowed well and she managed to humour me in some parts of this story. I found the concept of her living in England interesting since most novels I’ve read recently have been set in America, it was nice to see a change in atmosphere. Overall though, this just wasn’t my cup of tea.

Thank you to the publisher and edelweiss for providing me with a review copy. All opinions are my own.

Florence is single and her family are desperate for her to find a partner. Her mother pays for her to see Gwendoline a love coach, who advises she writes a wish list of all the requirements she is looking for in a man. Surprisingly soon after along comes Rory to her bookshop with his eccentric clothes and rather snobby attitude. Is Rory Mr right or just Mr right now!! Slowly she begins to see his true self and maybe true love is closer to her than what she thinks.

This is such a witty book, it had me laughing and crying. Let’s just say “Cowabunga” and I cannot stop laughing!!!

This is the first book I’ve read from this author but will definitely not be my last.

Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for a review.

When I picked up The Wish List I was in need of a light, fun read. I certainly got that with this one. Having enjoyed previous books by Sophia Money-Coutts I was looking forward to a laugh. I guessed how the story was going to go quite early on and it took me a little while to warm to our main character Flo. In saying that, it was a fun and easy read, exactly what I needed.

Florence Fairfax works in a bookshop in Chelsea and loves with her step sisters and cat Marmalade. She reminded me of Nina Hill only an English version. She is happy in her life but she has never had a steady boyfriend and her family are on her back about it. She meets with a love coach against her better judgement and this is where the Wish List comes in. She has to write a list describing her perfect man. She dismisses it until a few days later Rory walks into the bookshop - and fulfils quite a lot of her criteria. But is it too easy, too good to be true?

Thanks to Harper Collins Books Australia for my advanced copy of this book to read.

I really want to love this book. But it disappointed me! The idea of an unlucky-in-love bookworm, with a pet cat, and two barmy half-sisters sounds like a recipe for hilarity. However, I cringed more than I laughed, which isn’t a good sign. A one-star rating for The Wish List would be too harsh, because it wasn’t a bad book. But sadly, it just didn’t make me smile as much as I had hoped.

The book follows the life of Florence, who finds comfort in routine, order, and even numbers. Constant control makes her feel safe. She obsessively counts anything and everything to keep her anxiety at ease. And it has to be even numbers. People, miles, stairs, chairs, chips, keyboard keys, cars, minutes, steps and so on. However, I expected Florence’s counting to play a much bigger role in her day-to-day life. It felt important in some chapters and non-existent in others.

I love the premise of The Wish List. Any book that fits the coming-of-age narrative is usually a very charming one. I really like the fact that Florence’s dream man appears the moment she completes her list. It sets the tale up for a really gratifying journey. Plus, Sophia Money-Coutts has a friendly and inviting tone to her writing that makes it very easy to absorb.

Tragically, The Wish List is very predictable. Sometimes that’s a good thing, it can add a level of comfort to chick lit reads. But in this case, it pushed me to want to find the ending and move on.
The biggest loss for me in this book is the characters. I can’t remember any of their names. None of them stood out to me as overly likeable, so there was no inclination to really invest in their lives. The characters I didn’t like ruined every chapter they appeared in. And sadly, Florence’s personality fell flat. The book is told from her point of view, and I expected a little more charisma. The romance also felt stale. I would have really liked to experience a refreshing journey between two people in this contemporary novel, but I never found that.

Another struggle for me is the pacing of this book. It has a very relaxed start, the reader is introduced to the concept of a wish list straight away. Then the narrative slows to the point of me wanting to skip ahead. While some of Florence’s misadventures are entertaining, a couple of chapters didn’t seem that valuable to the overall story. Then the ending seemed to appear and disappear way too quickly to be fully appreciated. When it comes to books like this, happy endings can be the best part, and I feel like this wasn’t taken advantage of.

While The Wish List is a light summer read, it lacks the entertainment factor that holds my attention. The author’s voice has a likeable warmth, but the romance and characters let this read down.

2.5 stars, rounded up for being quite funny in places.

I quite enjoyed Money-Coutts's debut, The Plus One, because it was kind of like the modern-day version of a historical romance. There's even a duke's heir wandering around. But I didn't enjoy it so much I wanted to read basically the same story with slightly different characters, which is what The Wish List is.

Our heroine Florence is the daughter of a British ambassador who works in a Chelsea bookshop. She's never had a boyfriend, and her lack of experience is grating on her, especially as her half-sister Mia is about to be married and her other half-sister Ruby has had a string of boyfriends. (The latest one is the aforementioned duke's heir). Her stepmother Patricia ends up forcing her to go a bunch of sessions with a love coach named Gwendolyn, who makes Florence write down the list of attributes she wants in a man. Wonder of wonders, who should come into the bookshop the next day but Rory, a civil servant and rising politician who seems to tick every box...

Florence is smitten, even if her co-worker Zach is less impressed. And thus arises the first problem in this book: there's an excruciating love triangle.

Excruciating because neither of the heroes are at all likeable or personable. In fact, Florence has zero chemistry with either of them. The sex scenes, basically all of which were with the wrong hero, are okay but left me cold. Money-Coutts also uses the same strategy to resolve the love triangle she used in Book 1, where one hero is shown to be a cheating lout. This just makes things way too simple for her heroines and saves them from any degree of emotional conflict.

I didn't like Zach or Rory, but I did like Florence. She's pretty sweet, and her severe OCD fleshes out her character away from the blandness it sometimes threatens to fall into. Also, she's funny. The best thing about this book is by far the humour, in many cases very distinctively British. As a British person who mostly reads American-authored chick lit (even my ARC of the last Sophie Kinsella was provided by her American publisher rather than her British one!) it was like a breath of fresh air.

Sadly, I skim-read many pages at the end, and reading the whole book felt like deja vu because all I could think of was the similarities to The Plus One. If there had been a bit more originality, I would have enjoyed it a lot more.

I disliked this book. A lot.

From the synopsis, I thought this was going to be a cute romance between a girl who works at a bookshop and a guy who is the perfect match to 'the wish list' that she wrote at the beginning of the book. But that is not what this book is at all.

From the beginning, I straight away disliked Florence. The moment when she said that she thought men using an umbrella because it was not 'manly' was the moment I knew I hated her. The only time I remotely felt something other than hate towards her was when her cat died. Then I disliked her sisters, who gave Florence so much terrible advice and were just as judgemental as Florence. Then I met Rory, who is by far one of the most irritating characters I have ever read in my life. The whole shouting 'cowabunga' thing when he orgasmed (was that supposed to be something I found funny? Because I really didn't) gave me second hand embarrassment, and then him cheating on her? I guessed that would happen but still, that makes him a terrible character. Basically, Rory was just awful, but so was everyone else in this book.

The beginning of this book was so slow and it took so long for the pace to pick up but it did eventually so that was one positive aspect about it because at least it felt like I was finishing it faster when I was skim reading it. The only reason I am giving this book 1.5 stars is because of Zach. He was the only tolerable character and he deserved better than to have to deal with these awful people.

Also there was no chemistry between Florence and Zach. There was more chemistry between Florence and Rory (probably because they were both awful people), but the chemistry between Florence and the guy she ends up with at the end was basically none excitant. She spends the first 60/70% of the book judging Zach because he has tattoos and because he works temporarily for his uncle at the book shop, and then all of a sudden, she has a crush on him and is thinking about him whilst having sex with Rory?? That does not make any sense to me.

Basically, I hated this book. A lot. I would not recommend this book to anyone but if you want to read it, go ahead but expect a book about a lot of horrible characters. I now want to erase this book from my memory because I never want to have to think about it again.

The cover of this book is so pretty and deserves a lot better than the terrible story inside it.

Meet Florence, working in a Chelsea bookshop called Frisbee Books with Norris 'if you need anything give me a shout' shop owner, and gay wanna-be but mostly unemployed actor Eugene. Flo's life is sedate and, without a boyfriend, Florence showers all her love on cat Marmalade, and rigidly makes sure routines are in place that cannot be deviated from. Cheese and tomato sandwiches cannot leak their pips into her rucksack and she has many self imposed rules that make life quite a trial. Her game, Consequences means that if a certain coloured car follows another certain coloured car then the day will be bad and of course there is the Counting too. Odd numbers spell disaster. In a bid to control her life Florence counts lots of things and even numbers are reassuring.
Whether this is due to losing her Mum at an early age, her Dad re-marrying and working as a diplomat abroad, or the connection between half sisters Ruby and Mia which Florence seems not to be a part of, or even the shallow, appearance obsessed step mother Patricia, it is hard to say. In reality obsessive compulsive behaviours can be so damaging and invasive, destroying relationships and people's ability to function, but in this novel, The Wish List, they are a quirky part of Florence's personality which just makes her more likeable and more of an interesting character.
This book IS hilarious. Gwendolyn Glossop the love coach on Harley Street is incredibly funny and responsible for Florence creating a wish list of attributes she would like a potential boyfriend to possess. Florence doesn't believe in the madness at all but then she meets Rory (the Tory).
The dialogue is laugh-out-loud, the sex scenes laugh-out-loud and the whole book just makes you feel good! The characters are incredibly well written and enjoyable to get to know and the plot is not sacrificed to humour. The two go hand in hand.
Florence is not only seeking a love life, she is also involved in a campaign to save Frisbee Books. At the helm of the project is Norris's nephew Zach and with the help of the tiny band of workers, we are treated to an Instagram poet event, the Chelsea Pensioners choir at a Christmas event and the petition signing outside of the bookshop.
Throw in friends from support group NOMAD (no more anxiety disorders) a wedding that has been planned to death and an uncontrollable pug and you have a delightful, zany, silly, funny, happy, marvellous read.
Guaranteed to chase away any black clouds lurking over your head, pick up this book for the best medicine in life - laughter.

Over Zach: “Een aardige vent.

Absolut empfehlenswert!

This was such a fun and lighthearted rom com and just so enjoyable.

Florence Fairfax hasn't been a relationship ever really but she isn't lonely. She has her cat, her job at the bookshop and her step sisters Mia and Ruby, that she lives with, to keep her company. This being the case, her step-mother forces her to go and see the love coach, Gwendolyn, and she writes her wish list for a man. Not too long after, Rory comes into her life and he seems just perfect, but is he 'the one'. A romantic comedy follows, filled with lots of laughs and this was such a fun escape. While I did guess the direction the story would take not too far into it, I didn't mind, as it was so enjoyable.

I hate this damn book and everyone in it. FMC sucks, her sisters suck, her ex boyfriend and his entire family suck, the only person that didn't suck was Zack, and we barely got to know him.

I'm trying to stay positive in 2025 but the plot moved along agonisingly slow. 80% into the book miss thing was STILL with her deadbeat boyfriend who wasn't supposed to be the main hero. And then we have to believe she's suddenly into her coworker, even though she was such a judgemental bitch towards him for the biggest part of the book????? I should've DNF'ed to be fair but I was too stubborn.

DNF. It couldn't be done. I went to pick up this book again looking down the barrel of spending another 300 pages with this woman and I'd rather clean out the bottom of my garbage cans.

The main character is so dreadfully dull. I get that's supposed to be her thing – she's got rampant OCD and wants everything the exact same every day – but the first 60 pages are like watching paint dry in human form.

In addition to being boring as shit, the main character is also kind of snotty. She seems like someone who hates things for the sole reason that they're popular. Meringue scented candles? Eye-roll. Earning a decent salary in insurance instead of making minimum wage at a struggling bookstore? Unthinkable. Being excited about planning your wedding? God her sister is so basic she should just throw herself off the Tower of London.

I got to the point where they intro what I assume will be the rival love interests but honestly they both seemed very nice and I disliked her so much that I was just hoping that neither of them got together with her. That is a dead canary in the romcom coal mine if I've ever read one.

A bookshop and a cat meant I was sold on this book already. Add to that a protagonist who like me is quite happy with just those in her life, then throw in a dysfunctional family, a love coach and some witty and cutting remarks and it’s like an ice cream sundae with not only a cherry on top but chocolate sprinkles too.

This is an easy light hearted book with not only fun characters and plot but some great one liners and literary references. I loved it when Florence described herself as wanting to be as alluring as Scarlett O’Hara with the sassy intelligence of Jo March and the porcelain delicacy of Daisy Buchanan but in reality was more like Miss Havisham.

As a lover of cheesy Hallmark movies this had the expected plot lines of one of their good rom coms and I definitely pictured Lacey Chabert as Florence sat at the table counting her chips.

Buchname: Die große Liebe kann mich mal
Autor: Sophia Money-Coutts
Seiten: 560 (Print)
Fromat: als Print und Ebook erhältlich
Verlag: ‎‎ Penguin Verlag; Deutsche Erstausgabe Edition (8. März 2022)
Sterne: 4

Cover:

Fazit:

Unterhaltsamer und locker leichter Liebesroman.

If I was to sum up this book in one word it would be BONKERS.
At the start I wasnt sure I was going to be able to get through the whole book. It is pretty long for a chick lit/romance book and I was bombarded with all of the cliches and stereotypes of rich people from the word go. The characters were OTT so I wasn't sure if it would be for me and dearly DNFed after 15% of the book. However I am really glad I persevered!
Florence the lead character is early 30's, seems to suffer from some kind of undiagnosed OCD and who I would compare to be like Eleanor Oliphant. Her character development was an absolute joy in this book.
The side characters were crazy. Most of them rich, posh and eccentric. It was VERY full on but I grew to enjoy the characters with time. I think you kist have to enjoy it for what it is rather than wish it was a little less manic. The characters that work with florence in the bookshop and her best friend were an absolute joy and made it all a bit more sane!
The storyline was pretty good and although it was pretty clear what would happen, I still loved the journey to it.
This book made me laugh! Many times out loud which books rarely do. It had some cracking humour and just the ridiculousness of many parts added to it. The writing was good as well and it was pretty fast paced.
Overall, this book isn't outstanding but it is a decent story and a good laugh so if you are up for something fun, give it a go!

Please note that I was gifted this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was exactly what I was hoping for, witty, funny and with an engaging cast of characters, I really enjoyed escaping into this one.

Florence is an introvert and an obsessive compulsive 'counter', trapped in a routine and living with her two step sisters and family who she feels kind of separate from. She's never had a boyfriend and so after visiting a very odd therapist type woman/witch character she writes a very specific list of requirements for her ideal man.

The therapist's involvement was the only thing that didn't really work for me; that part of the story was bordering on the paranormal, my eyes were rolling. I would have preferred Florence to have her epiphany without the mad therapist getting involved. But that's just me.

Apart from that this was warm, sweet and uplifting, just the thing to escape into.

Complete story, recommended.

Florence Fairfax is quite happy working in a bookshop, living wit her two half sisters & her cat. Unfortunately her step mother & sisters can't accept that she can be happy without a boyfriend & arrange for her to see a love coach (I doubt if that was her proper title but I can't remember what it was?) She gets her to write a wish list for a Prince Charming. Soon along comes Rory the Tory who seems exactly what she wants-or is it?

With slight Cinderella overtones (although the Step Mother & sisters are really quite nice, even if they are annoying!) this was a fun undemanding read. It had some great characters & some laugh out loud moments. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book.

Thank you to NetGalley for gifting me this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The Wish List is the story of Florence Fairfax. She works in a bookshop and is looking for the one. Always unlucky in love whilst her sisters were loved up and getting married. Until she meets Rory.........but does he meet all of the requirements on Florence’s Wish List?

I loved this book. I have never read a book by this author before but I have already looked up some of her other books to add to my reading list.
The story had me hooked from the beginning and it gave me every emotion from anger to crying (when you read the book, and I recommend you do, you will know which bit made me cry!)
I will definitely be reading more books by Sophie Money-Coutts and I will never be able to hear the word “Cowabunga” again without chucking to myself!

Full of heart, laugh-out-loud & so oh binge-worthy!

This novel was so addictive honestly couldn't put this down, its the humour is pitch-perfect. The 'cowbunga' moment had me in absolute stitches, even now writing this I'm chuckling about it.

Money-Coutts writing style is so effortless and engaging, it is reminiscent of Marian Keyes.

I whole-heartedly recommend for anyone looking for an uplifting read filled with laughter. I for one absolutely cannot wait for her next book!

A huge thanks to HQ Stories & NetGalley for sending me a copy in return for an open & honest review.

Florence Fairfax has never had a boyfriend, sure she's had a few one night stands but no actual commitment. She's perfectly happy with her life, working in a bookshop (the dream) and not straying to far from routine and her cat Marmalade.. 🐈
But with her stepsister annoucing she's engaged it soon highlights Flo's very single status and her stepmother sets her up with an eccentric love coach, Gwendolyn. When Gwendolyn makes Flo write a "wish list" describing her perfect man, Flo thinks she is crazy, the universe won't give her what she wants just because she writes a list.. or will it? Enter Rory, a guy who seems to tick every box on Flo's list and just so happens to walk into her bookshop...

Guys I have to start with one word: 𝘊𝘖𝘞𝘈𝘉𝘜𝘕𝘎𝘈𝘈𝘈𝘈! That won't make much sense if you haven't read The Wish List but I needed to get it off my chest and it really is one, of many reasons, why you should read this book.. IT IS HILARIOUS!

I LOVE a rom-com, give me romance in bookshops and I'm there. This book was completely binge-worthy. The characters were all brilliant (rare) and the storyline was fab, with there being many laugh out loud moments. Honestly, at various points in the book I had to stop to have a good giggle! We all love to root for an awkward yet loveable protagonist and Florence will definitely have you on her side, after a few chapters. I find with rom-coms, that they either work or they're a disaster and The Wish List is definitely the first! Was it cringey at times? Of course but that's what made me love it. Would recommend!

Florence is 32, lives with her two half-sisters in her parental home and with her cat, Marmalade. She works in a bookshop and is rather content with her life until her family (her stepmom in particular) start bothering her about her love-life and pays for a 'love-coach' (at Harley Street no less). There Florence makes a list for a suitable life partner. But is that list what is going to make her happy?

I enjoyed the writing style and the setting. It is more chick-lit than romance (not in a negative way). It gave me a few hours of reading pleasure.

*** I want to thank Netgalley and the publisher for granting me an ARC and this is my honest and voluntary review. ***

Leuk feelgood verhaal.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC.

I really enjoyed this book! It's addictive, funny, and was a very quick read for me.

Florence was a joy to read and I loved her relationship with her sisters and colleagues. The character development throughout the story was excellent, seeing Florence learn and gain confidence made me so happy.

Such an enjoyable read!

I really enjoyed this book, although I’d love to read more about Florence’s anxiety and have the characters discuss it openly. Nevertheless book was super funny and I couldn’t stop laughing at some points, which was great as the plot was to some extend very predictable and obvious but it could be me reading too many romance novels.
