Nexus — a connection or link between things, persons, or events
Neil Bullock's latest installment in his Primordials series, Nexus, amps up the intensity faced by his space train travelers as characters face catastrophic odds and race to find a being who might be able to set things right in the universe — or at least the parts they currently journey through.
Bullock’s second book in the series, Earth Twelve, ended on a shocking cliffhanger, and Nexus begins by immersing the reader in the aftermath of waiting for the other shoe to drop. The devastating event witnessed at the end of Earth Twelve birthed a “calm between storms” of sorts, and main characters Eden Lucas and Lara Parker find themselves visiting a camp of people with little hope of survival. What really stood out for me as Nexus began is how author Bullock showed how life can’t help but thrive even with grim odds. Friendships happen. Meaningful relationships can form when everything is collapsing. The simplicity Bullock presented in a dire situation wowed me because it was believable.
Bullock successfully experiments with separating characters and turning them toward inward journeys. Lara, in particular, already a likable and level-headed character, embarks on an internal journey as she is forced to make decisions even though she fears losing what she loves. Eden’s character faces tough choices, too. Both characters are stretched beautifully, but oh, how we, as readers, ache for them when situations are blown out of control.
Tension is a big theme in Nexus. Indeed, readers will not want to stop reading until they get to that next moment of relief, which author Bullock provides. Bullock also introduces a new sinister character (readers of Off Track will gasp!) with shocking plans involving Grayshapes. There is a balance between hopefulness and horror in this fantasy-meets-sci-fi installment. The author navigates this leg of the “God-train’s” journey perfectly. Never mired in despair, the reader, like the characters, is unwilling to give up.
New characters joined the travelers in book three, and Megan Young promises to deliver a complex — but fascinating — storyline in the next book(s). Cassia brought a comforting presence and won me over with an early line in the book: “Here, eat and tell me things.”
Also, the reader begins to learn what the actual Nexus is through the eyes of Eden. One of Merriam-Webster Dictionary’s definitions for Nexus is “a connection or link between things, persons, or events.” Bullock delivers the tangible (the actual place) while introducing readers to the intangible — but very real — threads of the universe connecting everything and everyone. How powerful the Nexus is remains to be fully understood, and I suspect readers have not seen the last of this place in space.
Surprising to me were the many reveals made in Nexus. Bullock answered some of the biggest questions and wonderments created in the first two books in the series. The train was even boarded by a visitor I just did not expect. We learn some truths, but Bullock doesn’t deliver every nook and nuance. I suspect there is much to discover in future installments of the Primordials series, and I, for one, cannot wait to learn the secrets of the universe.
It's easy to give five stars to Neil Bullock’s Nexus! While this latest installment in the Primordials series ended on a hugely satisfying note, I need to know what happens next. If you’ve read Off Track and Earth Twelve, make reading Nexus a priority. You will not be disappointed!

One of the things I love about the Primordials is that there’s always so much happening. You never know what to expect as you watch the evolution of Lara and Eden’s journey through complex emotions and situations. They have a lot of hard decisions to make in Nexus. The cast of characters is bigger, they spend more time apart and exploring the universes around them but it never feels disjointed.
