Jared Collins was depressed, and he had good reason to be. After all, he'd graduated with his psychology degree in the spring, and here he was still unemployed in the fall. When his dad had passed away, he'd left Jared some money, but now that was beginning to run out. Desperate, Jared finds himself calling a help line. Speaking with the counselor eases his mind immensely--almost as though she has some sort of magic touch. He senses something quite special about her, but he has no way of knowing how very special she is--she's not from Earth. As their relationship develops, Jared is astonished to discover that he has the skill to help her people in their mission. And learning the reason for that will astonish him even more. How could he have anything in common with an alien?
ASSIGNMENT: Earth” is an exciting new contemporary sci-fi fantasy with alien contact and is the latest novel by Lynne Armstrong-Jones.
Jared Collins is down on his luck and extremely depressed about his inability to find employment as a counselor. Seeking help by calling a crisis line, Jared is intrigued when he talks to Andrea Perk. Well, that is her name while she is in human form, on a mission to save earth from an alien race that wants to use mind control on humans so that they will do their bidding and destroy each other. This will leave the planet’s abundant resources for the taking. Andrea also feels drawn to Jared, despite knowing that she holds too many secrets to be able to have a full and meaningful relationship. Something strange happens as they draw closer to each other. Jared seems to be developing special powers that can help Andrea and her group fight off the enemy. Jared soon finds out the truth and joins the war against the invaders. He and Andrea grow closer despite not knowing what the future holds for them and the earth.
Having read Lynne Armstrong-Jones novels from the On the Trail fantasy series, I looked forward to reading something new and different by this amazing author. I was not disappointed. Armstrong-Jones stepped into a more modern time where our current troubles are issues for the people in this story, as well as aliens, their technology, and special energetic powers. Her creative imagination was well-utilized, seamlessly weaving an invisible alien attack on earth into events that appear to be happening in our mundane reality. Realistic despite the fantastical elements, I could easily imagine it to be true.
The male protagonist is a man who is down on his luck and depressed when the story begins. His character quickly evolves into a man who has finally learned to step into his power. His transformation is amazing, and I enjoyed watching him discover superpowers of which he was previously unaware. Armstrong-Jones was right on target with character development. The supporting characters were also enjoyable and their unique attributes added some fantastic elements to this fantasy. Adding a somewhat forbidden romance between an alien and an “earther” added to the drama. Vivid descriptions of the alien characters helped round out the story.
Overall, this is a unique story that is very well done. I truly hope that “ASSIGNMENT: Earth,” is the first book in a very long series, because I cannot wait to read more!
