Despite Larkin’s strict upbringing, she is a fun and sassy 19 year old who thinks she has her life all planned out until she meets the mysterious long-haired, tatted up 24 year old Wesley, who works at the bar that her friend Val sneaks her into. From first glance they are both hooked.
What follows next is a whirlwind romance that is all-consuming for hopeless romantic Larkin. They both fall hard and fast. I love how Wes is fiercely protective of Larkin, but at the same time he tells her how strong she is. I think this is a message the author got across really well.
What I really love about this book is the raw emotion that you feel from Larkin as her feelings grow. It’s so authentic how she would go through uncertainty, but at the same time be so wrapped up in the love she felt for him - while it could have come across as annoying, I felt it was real and didn’t shy away from making Larkin a flawed but loveable character. Especially with her friendship with Val as well. Neither girl was perfect, but they loved each other and were there for one another when they needed to be.
This was a true, gritty, coming-of-age love story. There was friendship, love, family drama and heartbreak. This was a really great debut novel! I would read more by this author =)
