A quick and cute holiday romance

*Part of a series, but can be read as a standalone.*

Brie and Rockwell, the ultimate high school sweethearts, were inseparable. But during their senior year, things took a turn for the worse. Rockwell's family went through some major drama that traumatized him, and he ended up breaking Brie's heart and skipping town without so much as a goodbye.

Fast forward to now, and Rockwell is back in town for the holidays. Brie thought this would be the perfect opportunity to finally get closure. Will she be able to get the closure she needs, or will her old feelings for him come flooding back?

This was a cute and entertaining holiday romance that you can easily devour in a day. But the male narration was a bit of a downer. The narration was muffled and of low quality. Which hindered my reading experience a bit. Don't get me wrong, it's still worth a read, but I wouldn't recommend the audiobook.

***Thank you to NetGalley, Anneka R. Walker, and Dreamscape Select for graciously sending me the audiobook to review. As always, all thoughts are my own.***

Merry Kismet by Anneka R Walker
Part of Gift-Wrapped romance series by multiple authors.
Contemporary second chance holiday romance. Alternating POV. Closed door/Clean.
Brie is gifted a notebook and told to write down her Christmas wishes. She’s always believed in Kismet or Fate so she does as instructed and wishes for a second chance with her school boyfriend. As soon as she’s finished writing her wishes, he’s knocking on her door.
Rockwell left Bearwood disillusioned with romance and marriage when his parents split. He’s back in town to convince his mother to move closer to him as she gets older. Living temporarily in the duplex next to Brie has him remembering all their good times together.
Brie and Rockwell fall into old patterns of holiday traditions and find themselves realizing how much they’ve missed the other.

Charming and delightful holiday romance. Brie is a bit naive but it works well with her as a school teacher. Together, they make the traditional endearing.

🎧 I listened to an audiobook performance by Elise Taff and Sean Yves Lessard. Each did their POV, and both voices in their chapters. Performances were filled with emotion and easy to follow. The male recording had a bit of an echo and a tin can sound and changing from male to female and back made that tonal difference noticeable through the first half of the book. Either I got used to the difference or it was cleaned up in the second half as I didn’t hear the echo after that. The story was easy to follow in audiobook and a charming addition to the holiday season.

Thanks NetGalley and The audio publisher for an advanced audio copy.
This was a fun, quick audiobook perfect for this time of the year.
The book has a very little pinch of magical realism with the kismet wish notebook. The main female Bree writes down her Xmas wishlist. She wishes for a happily ever after with her ex high school boyfriend Rockwell.
Rockwell left the small town and Bree behind the day of his high school graduation and never looked back after a family devastation. The last thing he expected was to find himself back in the small town and keep running into Bree. Soon is strong resolve to keep his distance starts to wain.
The story was cute. Easily listened to it in a day at work. It's a clean romance which is usually not my thing but it didn't feel unnatural.
A small criticism is that the story is narrated by both a female and male actor and the male recording sounded like he was in a tin can.
Overall a lovely sweet story of second chance love.

I love Christmas books! In Merry Kismet, Anneka Walker delivers the perfect length, romantic story with all the Christmas vibes & a touch of Christmas magic. It’s a sweet, second chance romance that was kismet or fate & I loved every minute of it!

Brie’s a darling first grade teacher who’s not looking forward to the holidays, especially with her upcoming family party where she’ll go alone, again. She’s never gotten over her high school boyfriend who left her heartbroken seven years ago. While shopping, she meets a clerk who looks a lot like Mrs. Claus who gives her a mysterious notebook with Kismet printed on it & tells her to write her biggest Christmas wishes in it. Brie gives it a try & writes down several wishes all involving her ex-boyfriend Rockwell. Imagine her surprise when he knocks on her door a few minutes later.

Rockwell left Bearwood, ID as soon as he could after his parents’ divorce. Now a jaded business man, he returns to his hometown to help out a friend. He just happens to be staying in the duplex right next to Brie. Seeing her again brings back all the old feelings, but he’s just there to do a job & convince his mom to move back to LA with him. Brie & her Christmas wishes get under his skin though. Will this lovable grump take a second chance at love?

This book had all the Christmas feels! I enjoyed all the fun activities like making sugar cookies & stringing popcorn, watching Christmas in Connecticut, & the family party. There were hilarious moments with a mischievous cat, arm wrestling, & meddling friends/family.

I loved Brie’s & Rockwell’s grumpy/sunshine relationship & watching Rocky lose his jaded outlook on love. They’re a perfect compliment & support for one another. Along with the cute, swoony moments, I enjoyed their realistic, heartfelt conversations about dreams & fears.

You’ll definitely want to add this to your Christmas list! Though it’s part of the Gift-Wrapped Romance series, each book is meant to be read as a standalone. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author. All opinions are my own and voluntarily provided.

Audiobook update: I love when authors are able to have dual narrators and I liked both of the ones used in this audiobook. I thought they both did a great job with the story.

I received a complimentary copy from Dreamscape Select via NetGalley. All opinions in this review are my own.

Original review:
This was my first Christmas romance of the season and it really hit the spot for me because one of my favorite tropes is second-chance romance!! Brie still misses her high school boyfriend Rockwell Davenport who disappeared from her life 7 years ago without a word. When a store clerk gifts her with a notebook inscribed with "Kismet" across the cover, Brie decides to make a Christmas wish list for Santa and #1 on her list is "I want Rockwell Davenport for Christmas".

According to Brie, Rockwell Davenport is "The cinnamon roll type. The good guy who cares about everyone, respects women, and has the manners of a gentleman. He's a cinnamon roll. Ultra yummy, inside and out." But Rockwell never planned to return to Bearwood, ID when he left, he's only back to help a friend and get his mom to agree to move to L.A. so he can help take care of her.

I'm a sucker for a great second chance romance and this one roped me in right away. I loved the magical air about this one--how Rockwell was staying in the duplex next to Brie and that she was able to check off all the items on her wish list. I loved the dual POV and the small town traditions. This book had all the feelings of watching a Hallmark Christmas movie and it was just the right length--not too long, but not too short. Oh, and Brie was right--Rockwell is a cinnamon roll!!

If you want to get into the Christmas spirit, grab this book and curl up with your favorite comfy throw. You'll be wanting to string popcorn, trim the tree and watch Christmas movies by the time you finish reading it.

I received a complimentary copy. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Thank you NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for this Arc.

2.5 stars for Merry Kismet. I have to be honest in my review and say that this wasn´t my cup of tea. The book itself it´s not bad but I found the story predictable and sort of lame.
For me, second-chance romances are the most difficult to write. Conveying all the emotions that brought to the first break up and to the eventual getting back together. If the premises for this are not strong than the plot it´s a flop for me.
In the case of Merry Kismet, I´m torn. On one side I really liked the beginning of the book, but from 60% in I was struggling to keep reading and moving forward.
The characters are boring and too close personality-wise that I really don´t see the spark between them.

Regarding the audiobook, I really liked the voices, but I think there is a need to adjust the volume of the male voice. He was so much lower than the actress and not in timber.

Anyway, I´m sure this is a very subjective review and many people will love this book. It is cozy and sweet.

Part of The Gift-Wrapped Series, this is an adorable Christmas rom com! It will definitely give you all of the Hallmark feels. Brie never got over her best friend turned high school sweetheart, Rockwell. When he shows up at her door years later, does it mean her wish is coming true? Merry Kismet has all of my favorite things: Kismet of course!, second chance, dual POV, slow burn, friends to lovers, small town shenanigans, comedy, forced proximity, Christmas lists, a crazy cat, accidental fake dating, and "ASK ME TO STAY". You'll swoon the whole time! I absolutely loved the narrators, Elise Taff and Sean Yves Lessard. I recommend adding this to your holiday reading list! Thank you Netgalley and Dreamscape Media for the ALC in exchange for my honest review.

“He winks and comes around the counter to stand beside me. I don't know why my pathetic heart is suddenly all seized up.
It's not like I've never seen muscled forearms, been winked at, or had a guy stand next to me before.”

I fell in love with this adorable Christmas romance. I don’t know how, but I’ve never heard of kismet, so I was excited to start this. And @authorannekawalker amazed me once again! She writes the sweetest stories!

This second chance romance was beautiful! Brie and Rockwell were high school sweethearts and everything was perfect till he broke up with Brie after their graduation. It broke her heart and she never understood why he did it. Now years later, he’s moved back to his hometown to try to convince his mom to leave and come live with him, due to her health. When he finds out Brie lives in the duplex next door to him, he knows he’s in a pickle. Will they be able to mend their broken past and rekindle their love for one another?

Rockwell was precious. He was so sweet to Brie and such a gentleman. He was great at small gestures and showing Brie how much he loved her. Brie was spunky, witty and so much fun! She never stopped loving Rockwell and she was determined for him to stay this time. I loved all the flirting and teasing. There were so many good scenes between these two! I laughed so much and loved every minute of this sweet book.

The small town setting was perfect. I loved all the side characters! All the cozy aspects of Christmas were all wrapped up in one delightful book! Definitely add this to your Christmas book reads this holiday season!! It’s sure to bring a smile to your face and warm your heart right up!!

**I loved listening to the audio version too!**

There’s something so magical about the Christmas season where anything can happen. A chance encounter at the grocery store with a Mrs. Cashier Claus leaves Brie with a Merry Kismet journal and when she writes the Christmas wish list of her heart on its pages, enchanted things begin to happen, beginning with her one true love appearing on her doorstep just moments later.

Anneka Walker does such a brilliant job of incorporating romance, humor and swoon. There were so many moments that made me laugh out loud and my heart was dancing. But what really captivated me was the character growth and the interactions and flirtations between Rockwell and Brie. I swooned hard for this second chance romance and the flutters just kept coming with every page turn.

If you love small town traditions, Christmas magic and snow, second chances, family reconnections, crazy cats, toe-curling mistletoe kisses, picnic dinners on blankets, and wish lists, this is the story for you!

Content: mild romance

3.5 rounded up.

This was a cute, second chance holiday romance that has Brie making a Christmas wish list only to have all of her wishes suddenly coming true.

Top of that list? Having her high school ex, Rockwell return home and when he shows up next door out of the blue Brie's Christmas starts to look much brighter. The only catch is Rockwell does not want to stay but the more he's around Brie the harder it is to leave.

While this wasn't my favorite in this series it was still a fun read and I liked the narration by Elise Taff and Sean Yves Lessard. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher/author for an early audio copy in exchange for my honest review.

'Her smile was my undoing in high school, and I'm not completely immune to it now.'

SECOND CHANCE ROMANCE!!!

I love second chance romance. Both characters know exactly what they are getting into because they've know the other person before AND they both learn how to overcome conflict. It's real world romance and why it's one of my favorite tropes-it lets that magic of book romance who that the real magic of true love isn't just for the movies or in books.

This is a great second chance romance in a small town setting that is the perfect setup for an entertaining Christmas romance!

This book is the perfect length for Christmas reading. It gives you enough to be a thorough and complete storyline without being too short, or too long- it's just right!

If you're in the mood for some Christmas magic and a heartwarming romance-this should be your next read.

Merry Kismet will be available November 6!!

Thanks to the author for the copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.

Merry Kismet by Anneka R. Walker
Gift-Wrapped Romance multi-author series
5h 56m narrated by Elise Taff and Sean Yves Lessard, 202 pages

Genre: Romantic Comedy, Holiday > Christmas

Featuring: Idaho, Teacher, Second Chance Trope, High School Ex, Family Drama, Wishlist, Small-Town Rumor Mill

Rating as a movie: PG

Songs for the soundtrack: "Jingle Bells" by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, "White Christmas" by Bing Crosby, "Underneath The Tree" by Kelly Clarkson, "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" by Christina Aguilera, "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" by The O'Jays, "All I Want For Christmas" by LeAnn Rimes, "Perfect Christmas" by S Club 7, "Jingle Bell Rock" by Bobby Helms, "Mistletoe" by Justin Bieber, "Silent Night" by Mariah Carey

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️🗒🎄

My thoughts: 📱35% 2:05:53 Ch. 9 - The difference in audio quality between the 2 narrators is frustrating. The story is cute but I dread Rocky's POV. It's like Elise is in a studio and Sean is in a closet with a tape recorder.

I wasn't ready for the ending, I needed more information I was like it stopped mid-paragraph. I had a hard time hearing Rocky's POV, but it was just okay so I let it go. I certainly recommend you get the ebook for this one.

Recommend to others: Maybe. It was an interesting plot, nothing spectacular, yet I could see it being a comfort read if you skipped the audio.

”Closure dating. It’s gotta be a thing.”
4★

Merry Kismet is truly at the top of my holiday reads for this season! This story has all of the makings of a big picture Christmas rom-com, rather than a cringey Hallmark movie. The characters and their decisions are actually realistic and the plot feels natural instead of rushed. Walker’s writing is precise, clean, and had me kicking my feet like a middle schooler.

Brie: FMC - former dancer turned school teacher, involved citizen, and hopeless hopeful romantic.

Rockwell: MMC - small town boy turned big city finance guy (I think??), playful, and of course, hot.

Tropes: second chance romance, small town romance, forced-ish proximity.

This book is a bit out of my normal romance choice because I definitely gravitate to spicy books, however, I adore this clean book! The plot, character chemistry, and holiday magic in this book just simply brought me joy. I also started and finished this audiobook in one afternoon, I ate it up dude.

Second chance romance isn’t always my favorite, but I really like how this one was done!

Brie was super sweet and I love that she didn’t become hard or snarky to Rockwell. She was hurt, but didn’t let the breakup destroy her whole existence.

Rockwell was understandably distant from his hometown and scared of relationships. But I love that they had open conversations and it felt like they went back to being friends easily and there were no hard feelings or grudges.

Their romance was sweet & I loved the scene with the Holland family! I’m hoping Gabby & Jocelyn get stories. (Maybe we’ll see Travis again too…)

Overall it was a sweet story!

Sometimes holidays are so busy and I get pulled in all the directions but still want to read. This series has come at such a great time. They're sweet and short and not novellas so I feel a bigger sense of satisfaction with the more that we get.
Rockwell and Brie were high school sweethearts until his home life wrecked his desire for a relationship. Why try if he'd just turn out to be a disaster and disappointment like his father? Brie has moved on... Kind of. It's so hard to not think about the one who got away.
Anneka's contribution to this series brings small town cozy friendship and a fated second chance. I loved that this felt different because there's almost zero resentment between the MCs and more of a longing for what was and what could be. I was here for the brief tease of magical realism and the joy of forcing Rockwell to live for some fun.
Thank you to the author for the #gifted copy. All thoughts are my own.

This is your typical, holiday second chance romance feel good, cheesy Christmas story. Cheesy in a good way. One of those light hearted stories where the two stumble upon each other again in the small town that they grew up in and fall back in love. It was an enjoyable feel good read.

Have you heard of Kismet, the idea of a fated romantic meeting?

I’m not so sure about fate, but I loved this second chance romance with a little bit of Christmas magic thrown in there.

I love second chance Romance. In real life, sometimes I think two people meeting that are good for each other is hard enough, but add it their readiness for a relationship and their lives fitting together and it can feel quite impossible. I love that their relationship ended initially without any huge reason, other than that life had thrown some curveballs and growing was needed.

Lots of sweet Christmas moments made this a really fun Christmas book.
Forced proximity
The cat scene
Lots of flirting
Family parties
Small town shenanigans
Christmas wish lists

It was such a great Christmas read. I loved the length of it. Not too long, but not a novella. Perfect for a quick read and Christmas spirit rush.

Completely not relevant to a good book, but I loved the male main character’s name. Rockwell! This was a name we hoped to use if we had another boy, but after 3 girls in a row we didn’t get a chance. He went by Rocky for short, but we always thought Wells for short would be so cute. Ahh baby names. The task I never imagined would be so hard to do with the father of my children. 😂

Merry Kismet is a cutie, second-chance story with a holiday twist to it and the perfect audiobook to quickly get you into the holiday spirit. Merry Kismet follows Brie and Rockwell, high school sweethearts who seemed to very end game. That was until Rockwell left Brie and their small town of Bearwood, ID behind and moved to LA. A true best friends to lovers to strangers situation.

Fast forward and we see Brie, now a first grade teacher, at her local grocery store. While checking out, the store clerk, described in almost a Mrs. Claus manner or just your casual Christmas elf, gifts Brie a notebook that reads 'Kismet' and suggests to write her Christmas wishes down. After getting home and conferring with her friends, that is exactly what Brie does.

Enter Rockwell, who returns to Bearwood seemingly out of the blue. Rockwell returns to help out a good friend and SURPRISE, is staying next door to Brie while he is home. His return does in fact turn some heads and get the town talking, which is only ramped up once he and Brie are seen hanging out.

The storyline was very linear, you weren't left confused at any point because of jumps. The side characters really helped helped to move both the plot along and Brie and Rockwell back together...but what could you expect from a cat coming out of nowhere and the always beloved meddling mothers?

I've been looking for an easy read to get me into the Christmas spirit and Merry Kismet was that read. It has all of the stereotypical holiday activities that you would think of when comes to the holiday parties: winter carnivals, stringing popcorn, and family Christmas parties featuring ugly sweaters, just to name a few!

While Merry Kismet is technically part of a series, it can be read/listened to very easily as a stand alone without causing any confusion.

My only piece of negative feedback, and the reason I docked a point, is because the audiobook is a dual narration. When it came to to the narration of Brie, the recording was clear and had the standard of a typical audiobook, very high quality. However, when it came to Rockwell's parts, the audio was very drastically different. It sounded like the narrator was reading his story parts on the phone. It was much lower quality and was very noticeable when switching from Brie's parts. TLDR; inconsistent recording sounds.

NOTE: Thank you to NetGalley, Anneka Walker, and Dreamscape Select for sending the and advanced copy of the audiobook. All thoughts on the story and production are my own and have been voluntarily given.

This Christmas romance was better than a Hallmark movie!!

I loved the second chance romance that Brie and Rockwell were given in Merry Kismet!! Do you know what kismet is? I had no idea until reading @authorannekawalker 's book! 😂

Brie and Rockwell were high school sweethearts but had broken up. Years later Brie makes a Christmas list and Rockwell is at the top of that list even though it's been years since these two have seen each other. When Brie is done writing her wishlist of all things related to her ex boyfriend, someone knocks on her door and sure enough, it's Rockwell, himself!

When Rockwell arrives in his home town for a visit after being away for almost a decade, he has one thing on his list of things to do: convince his mother to move to LA with him so he is able to take care of her. Brie was a nice bonus to this plan of his and he will try everything in his power to get her back! It doesn't seem that hard once he finds her Christmas journal and sees that he's on her list.

I absolutely loved this book!! The magical feeling of Christmas and a community that comes together was great! I loved the chemistry between Brie and Rockwell. I really enjoyed watching their friendship develop into more of a romance!

There are so many other things to love about this book! You'll definitely want this to be on your Christmas reading list!💗

I just loved this magical Christmas story! Anneka brings in the magic of Christmas right from the start!

Brie has been lonely and heartbroken since being left by her boyfriend after high school graduation. She’s never gotten over her love for Rockwell Davenport. She’s now a school teacher living with roommates. On a whim she writes a Christmas Wish List. Of course all the wishes relate to her ex-boyfriend who left town years ago. If she’s going to wish she might as well wish for what she REALLY wants, right?

Rockwell comes back to his hometown after 7 years away. He’s come to help his friend with his business and to convince his mother to move to L.A. to live with him so he can take care of her. He’s only there for the Christmas holidays and has no intention to stay or interact with anyone else. He’s arranged for a place to stay, since he doesn’t want to stay with his mom, which may bring up painful memories.

Will he and Brie connect? Will he change his mind? This is a wonderful second chance romance that kept me turning pages. I really liked the main characters and the small town charm. If you’re looking for a feel good romance look no further.

Sometimes all you need is some holiday cheer! ❄️ And whilst I’m buried in cough drops, Kleenex, and chicken soup, I am more than happy to be vicariously living someone else’s Christmas dream, cosied up with a blanket & kicking my feet with glee. ☺️

This second chance romance in small town northern Idaho was adorable!

Brie is super sweet. She’s feeling a little lonely (and like her singleness makes her less) and trying to control the areas of her life she can. On a whim, thanks to an eclectic Mrs. Claus cashier, Brie makes a Christmas list for the first time in years. Only have the unexpected show up on her doorstep.

Rockwell, the most unexpected surprise in Brie’s life, is terrified of repeating his father’s mistakes. He’s not perfect & owns up to his actions in the past, but he’s also a sweetheart cinnamon roll with a fantastic relationship with his mum.

I loved the complexity of Rockwell & Brie’s relationship. Their past as a couple. Working through their issues now. And of course all the Christmas-y heartfelt moments plus a few laughs!

Merry Kismet was such a sweet, second chance romance. I really enjoyed the relationship and the characters. It's a short romance at just over 200 pages, but the development was really well done and nothing felt too rushed or too dragged out. And I loved that there was no 3rd act drama and communication was prioritized. The Christmas aspect is not overwhelming, but people who love really Christmassy romances may find this isn't enough for them. Overall, a very enjoyable read, and I recommend to fans of clean romance and second chances.

I listened to the audio and the narration was fine, but the speed and volume of the narrators did not match and I had to adjust speed and volume whenever the narrator switched. Hopefully this gets evened out before publication.

Thanks to Dreamscape Select, Anneka Walker, and Negalley for an audioARC in exchange for an honest review!

Die hard Anneka Walker fan here. I will read everything she writes. And I loved this cute book! I was so excited she wrote a Christmas rom com, and this was just perfect for a quick, feel-good read. It has all the laughs, romance and Christmas fun to make it a perfect book. I’m not usually a huge fan of second chance romance but Anneka nailed it. She brought out the best qualities in both characters and I couldn’t help but fall in love with them both. Brie is still pining over her first and only love, and is shocked to find him on her door step-almost as shocked as he is to find her on the other side. Kismet (a word I didn’t know until this book haha) definitely plays in favor of Brie and Rocky, is able to thaw a 7 year frosted over heart, showing that true love does conquer all 😉
I definitely recommend this one for everyone to read!!

"I shake my head to rid myself of any more crazy thoughts. I sort of forgot on finding his weaknesses and getting over him when we were laughing and talking last night."

I had never hard of Kismet before reading this book, and this book was the perfect introduction to it! I loved the second chance romance from two high school sweathearts. Brie is convinced by a store clerk to make a kismet list, and within minutes, the first item on her list comes true. She is faced with meeting her old high school boyfriend and they end up neighbors for the holidays.

Here were some of my favorite moments:
- The family meddling
- Brie's family party
- Matching Christmas sweaters
- The break-in
- "Ask me to stay"

Overall it was a 5 star read for me! Thank you to the author for the advance copy of this book. A positive review was not required.

Merry Kismet

A delightful holiday read. It has all the cozy Christmas vibes. It kept me company while I was sick in bed.

It’s a quick read with sweet characters and an engaging story.

I listened to the audiobook. I loved the female narration and while the male narration was good, I kept becoming irritated at the tunnel sound and having to constantly change the volume.

Content: side character infidelity, hospitalization of a loved one

This was a quick and fun holiday read. It’s part of a series but can 100% be read as a standalone. I loved the characters and the storyline. I loved the dual POV and narration was good but the male audio quality was poor / muffled so I would recommend checking this one out on kindle or paperback instead of audiobook.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing a free advanced copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

This was a quick, lighthearted, hallmark-style Christmas Romance.

There is not a lot beneath the surface, but it was a great time and I was rooting for our two reconnected high school sweethearts.

Read this for an easy-breezy, low-conflict holiday fun.

This has no spice aside from some kissing and includes forced proximity, second chance, and adorable side characters.

I listened to the audio and loved the female narrator. She had good pacing, good narration, and did the male voice well. Given that this is an early listen copy it may be fixed in final production, but a minor annoyance that the male narrator sounded like he was in a fishbowl. The volume difference between the two was jarring at times.

Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the advanced listener copy of this audiobook. All opinions are my own.
